I was just kidding when I counted heads at the launch and said I hoped the same number returned!  As Ron reported the winds were a bit stronger than the forecast and the seas were the same.  This was the day I really appreciated a good spray skirt – one wave went completely over me – head on.  Even my hat was soaked.  Probably would have a been a great day to go to Mound Key – in hindsight!

After a good breakfast with Sam, Judy and Pat we headed out for the launch where we met Mike, Chuck, Ron,  Oscar, Elisabeth (not sure of the spelling) Bob and Mari Grace.  Cynthia was on the other side of the bridge along with Bill and Dave W who was in a new boat - Surprise.   It was overcast and cool but sure to warm up.  Getting out to the Gulf was where the adventure began.  Those of us already committed kept going, some headed wisely back to the bay side and Ron did an unplanned water exit.  Cynthia saw it immediately and headed to help, along with Bill.  Thanks to their expertise (see Ron’s report) everything ended well.  There was a long period of time where the group was very split up and I realize the importance of having radios.  I was blowing my whistle but no one ahead of me could hear it.  Maybe Santa will bring me one for Xmas.  Bill said he will plan some water rescue practice sessions soon…I’ll be there and hope others will appreciate the need after today.  Ditto the need for the PFD’s – today was the day.  Thanks everyone for hanging in there – the bay side return was great.  Mike and I saw an eagle and several dolphin very near our boats.  Happy Holidays to all and  I hope those that have been good this year get some great new gear from Santa.

Terri

Terry... Thank you for leading a great and challenging excursion during
developing winds and waves. For me it was a great experience.
The paddle excursions are tremendous. We meet and gain new friends, exchange
ideas and experiences. Each outing makes one more proficient
at sea kayaking. Sea kayaking is a sport that grows with you.
There are so many ways to explore the world. Kayaking is one of them. Wherever
your imagination leads you need skills and proper equipment(comes with training)
to get you there and back.
Before you slide into the cockpit of your kayak consider what is important to
you. I am a believer in solid instructional programs to take you beyond your
basic skills. We are very fortunate to have trained people with these abilites
in our paddle clubs.
Today was one off those days to learn. I could not have been more fortunate
then to see Cynthia and Bill come to show their exceptional rescue skills and me
the recipient.
I have flown aerobatics in turbulant air but never had a wet wave smash me in
the face head on and go on over me and then immediatley get a mean slam and a
dunk off my right. Never get that treatment when flyng.
Well...I could not win, lost the battle, yanked the rip cord and bailed. There
I was knee deep in water on a sand bar that dropped off into oblivion all around
me and with an under tow that was bent on taking me out to sea to meet my
rescuers Bill and Cynthia. Yes --the bottom fell out of the sand bar quickly
after I turned the kayak over to dump the water. Could not believe it. The next
wave half filled the boat again.
I was grateful for many things. No body would have time to to retrieve a life
jacket in this situation and or make an attempt to wear it after the incident. I
wear my life jacket. Secondly, my paddle was leashed. The message I pass on is
be proactive. You may save your rescuers life and yours. If you are prepared as
they say--- Just be safe.
Cynthia and Bill were soon there. I pushed on out to them in calmer waters.I
Followed instructions. Hung to Bill's bow while he turned over my boat spilling
the water out again. While Cynthia on port side and Bill on starboard and my
boat in the middle, it was my job to position myself on the deck, turn 90
degrees, belly facing down slide those feet into cockpit with toes pointing
down, then do 180 degree rollover and slide into the cockpit fasten the skirt
and rip cord in place. That was just like flying. With expert guidance we
paddled back through the breakers and life is happy ever after.
Thanks Cynthia and Bill for an expert rescue. Your practice and effort can
make the real thing safe and belive it or not fun.

Hi
The weather is kind of on the cool side here too. I walked across the pond yesterday.
It is 27 degrees F. out right now. There is light snow on the way and the lower Fox River is flooding because of an ice jamb. Try to stay warm. See you.

I just checked the weather in Aberdeen, SD, where I grew up--it is 16 deg, fog,
wind 9 mph north. And, it is not even January. I swear it used to go down to
-20 deg for the first 3 weeks in January--year in, year out. W/ global warming,
it will probably be higher than that this year.

Be happy, Patrick, and get down here as soon as you can.

Anyone interested in kayak camping in Everglades National Park or the Ten Thousand Islands should read the NPS bulletin on Wilderness Camping, it's 4 pages, lists all ENP campsites that require permits, has equipment checklists and contains valuable information about how to conduct yourself in the wilderness.  If the link doesn't work, cut and paste.

I went to a similar party last year at Gail’s and it was fabulous, so many nice people, great food, music, beautiful place on the river – would highly recommend it!  I am going to see if I can switch around my schedule, I live in Bonita, not too far from 75- anyone want to carpool if I can swing it?

Hi gang(s),

I know there's a lot going on this Saturday, including a promise of a cold front, but if a campfire in a forest hollow on the banks of the Orange River complete with live music and dance sounds good, c'mon out to the Keel's. Gail Keel is the gal who many of you met on the recent Turner River trip in the red over white Kestrel. She's got a dock in a nice cove to launch from if you want to have a bit of a paddle before or during. There won't be much moon on Saturday, and what moon there is will set not long after the sun.

Here's a few shots of a similar event in Nov 2008

and here's Gail's invitation for this weekend:

Keels' Christmas party for the weather hardy....

This Saturday Around 5 ish,, earlier or later,,,we're on Orange River so if you want to bring your kayak come anytime.

Bring blankets, jackets, chair, a dish to share if you want to ,byob, ( and I know my friends always drink responsibly... :) I will have hot dogs, buns, bon fire, room to play all kinds of music, might try to get  a little English dance going on the deck......for those willing.

email me for directions.

Take U.S. 41 north out of Naples to Bonita Beach Road. Where Iguana Mia is. Turn left and head west till you get to a big curve to the right where Bonita Beach Road turns into Hickory Blvd. Go north passed Big Hickory Pass bridge till you get to New Pass bridge. The put in is on the north side left escarpment. Then you park on the other side.

I don’t have a physical address for Dog BEACH – if you use 8700 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach it will bring you very close – that is the address for the main gate at Lover’s Key State Park.  Dob Beach next to New Pass on Estero Blvd. If anyone else has better directions please post them.

This is a record of out trip with Keith and Nancy Wellman and Bill Waller to Pavillion Key. It is a spectacular landscape with clouds, weather , and birds changing all of the time.
Message from jeanette:
We had a wonderful trip and stay on Pavillion Key. Warmer weather than usual for this time of year; spectacular birds and sunsets, sunrises, clouds, and fellow campers. We left on Tuesday, so Keith can fill you in on the adventures that evening and the next day.

Jesse,  I guess it depends on if they're there.  We tried to launch, and the folks from the rowing club were there and said no, you can't ever launch from here. (They did give us permission once when the group went out to do our round-trip through the mangroves)  I don't want to risk being kicked off their ramp.  The harbormaster at Rumruinners was very nice and said we could launch.  I'm not sure he'd be so agreeable if it was a large group.

i've launched there twice since they moved and never had an issue. they moved the launch ramp to the other side of the marina, the boat storage facility doesn't like people on their ramp but no one cares after hours.

RumRunners. The cape coral rowing club has a low floating dock that is ideal for launching boats. Free and plentiful parking. I have used this launch several times. Lots of mangrove tunnels nearby. What is the goal of the paddle?
