Description

This is a forum for the discussion of syntactical, rhetorical and stylistic issues that arise when translating from Swedish to English. To participate, you should be an independent translator, a native English speaker who translates professionally from Swedish to English on a regular basis. In addition, you should be interested in this group as a means for improving your translation skills and helping others improve theirs, rather than to make business contacts. Finally, you should be a member of the Association of Professional Translators (SFÖ) or the Federation of Authorized Translators (FAT) in Sweden. Please e-mail to ken.schubert@telia.com if you are interested in participating.

Abbreviated Guidelines for Participation on SWENG

For complete guidelines, go to www.swedishenglishtranslation.com/guide.pdf

Write a heading on the subject line, choosing from TERM (terminology), DISC (general discussion about usage), TECH (computer technology that you use as a translator), OFF-TOPIC, ADMIN (about how the list works), BE/AE (differences in variants of English) and CHAT.

Delete all messages except the one you are responding to. Do not include your email signature. Put your response above the previous message, not below it.

Highlight the word or phrase that you are asking about by putting **asterisks** or “quotation marks” around it.

Put your question into context. Include a sentence or two from your text, changing names if necessary to preserve confidentiality. If there is no context, make that clear.

Obey ordinary rules of etiquette. Messages should be posted to be helpful, not hurtful. Sweng’s watchwords are “help” and “light relief.” Avoid sarcasm and what can be interpreted as disparaging personal remarks. Discuss issues on a substantive basis and think about the seriousness with which other people will take what you say. We are a multicultural group – discussions should promote cross-cultural understanding.
