Supposedly from yahoo but not.
This is a spam circulating group who is suggesting that you can all register all groups you are a member of with them for ease.
DO NOT DO THIS. Have nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately anyone that gives countysutherland.co.uk to them will be unsubscribed by me.

This is one of the most dangerous new games played on unsuspecting people in yonks!

If you have already given the group address please let me know privately immediately.
Thanks lots

Hello Jennelle and list,
Thank you for the welcome.
I have recently discovered my ggrandfather was born in Stoer(?) 1849.
He didn't help by putting just Scotland on his wedding certificate.
However his death certificate said he was born Stoerhead so as I
haven't found this specific place I assume it should be Stoer.
I look forward to being in the group.
Thank you again

Thank you Judy

He was Roderick McLeod the son of Donald (farmer)and Mary McLeod.
I have placed his family on 1861 Scotland census and found his parents
marriage in Assynt.
Roderick married in Sydney 2 Jan 1890. I have the details for his
death and children which includes my direct line.

I don't know when or how he arrived in Australia but as he was a
seaman he possibly worked his way to Sydney. I am a novice at marine
records and haven't had any success at locating him. A quick look at
the NSW records link that Jenelle kindly suggested has three
possibilities in the Index to Vessels. I couldn't see instant access
to these records so I will need to investigate the site further to see
if accesss and more detail is possible.

Thanks so much for your help. It is great that I already have these
three leads to follow.

Hello Jenelle

I don't think any family came with Roderick. None has been spoken of
in the family. A cousin of Roderick's a William McLeod from the Isle
of Lewis came for a short visit after Roderick died in 1917.

The arrivals of Sydney relations are a mystery.
Roderick's wife was Caroline Robinson born in Birmingham in 1863 to
William & Susannah nee Holder. Have placed her in 1871 in England and
she married in 1890 in Sydney. Don't know of any family that came with
her either.
Roderick & Caroline's daughter Nellie (Lillian) married Robert
McIlhagga born 1885 in Ballymena, Ireland. He ran away to sea at 11
and spent his life sailing as a merchant seaman. They married in
Sydney in 1923 but I don't know when he arrived. He would have arrived
as crew and Lillian may have worked on shipping as well. I have a
vague idea that they met in Canada. I thought McIlhagga would be an
easy name to research but it is just the opposite. So few records in
that name.

I have to be away for work for the next few days so may not checkin
for a couple of days.
Thank you for your kind help.

Yes Rob,
Received yours after sending mine.
See what comes from the others and if you need anything in particular in
NSW (which is more my territory) let me know.
Have been researching in SA round Port Augusta family of my husband.
His grandfather was Ackbar Khan, b North West Fronteir India.  Can track him in Australia (SA/Alice Springs/Broken Hill etc )  Hard to go back in a country like India when you don't know the ropes.  But keep giving it another go, one day I'll crack it!

Hi Paddy,
I am back in internet land again.
Thanks for the offer of the NSW help. Likewise if I can help in SA
records I would be happy to. However it seems that you have that area
well under control.
INDIA!! Now that is a challenge and to think I complained about Ireland.
Hope that day of break through is soon.
Best wishes
Robyn

Hi Jenelle,
WoW you have certainly found his family. Thanks so much for the time
you have put into this.
I sent for Margaret Craigs & Robert McIlhagga's wedding certificate so
I have the gg gandfathers names.
The two children you found on IGI may have been Matilda Jane &
William. Not listed is a Samuel, Elizabeth, Margaret & my grandfather
Robert plus the 5 or 6 others we have no names for as yet.
Emerald Ancestors has a marriage for Malitda and possibly Elizabeth
but unfortunately no records of family for either.
The clan McIlhagga site had limited information on my line but were
able to help a little. It is a great site as it tries to keep track of
the known McIlhaggas.
I did not know of the NZer Phillip McIlhagga so he is one to keep in
mind.
I could do with a web site of headstones in Ballymena as offered by
Christine on the Sutherland burial page. I have a huge amount of
headstones to read in trying to find Roderick McLeods family. I have
now discovered his parents marriage and deaths in Sutherland so his
family did not come with him to Sydney. He had a few brothers &
sisters but it also seems via Census forms that most of them stayed in
Sutherland.

Thank you once again for your help it is so lovely of you.
Robyn

Robyn,
I've emailed a chap in New Zealand who has McLeods, just waiting on a reply.  Thought I found 2 girls on the family search, sometimes it pays to do one at a time, (like my husbands family - some under McCarrick and some under Carrick).  I tried shipping sites for unassisted immigrants Victoria, tried New South Wales and Assisted Immigrants, Queensland so far.
Did you try the www.naa.gov.au click record search enter as a guest.
Jenelle.

Hi Robyn
You mentioned that you thought no immediate family came out with your chap.
As you gather more info about the family , I'd certainly keep an eye out for cousins already in OZ.
I certainly had no idea when I started my research that I would find relatives of my gggrandfather , Kenneth Scobie McKenzie already in Australia, [no talk in the family] but I've found quite a few....the first I think was in the 40th Regiment sent to NSW....returning to farm in Creich.
Remember the population of Sutherland was never high so the chances of finding rellies and friends here is pretty high....a chain reactive migration.

I always had thoughts of my ancestors heading off into the unknown, but quite untrue in my case anyway.
The Scots education seemed to be superior for all classes compared with their Irish and English neighbours, I think a lot of letter writing occurred.

Also count your lucky stars the name wasn't Mackay :)

Good luck, keep us posted and we'll see what we can find.
Judy

Thank you Thank you Jenelle,

The Mariners and Ships in Aust Waters has Roderick McLeod!!
It looks like he arrived on the Moneta from Glasgow Sept 1871 AND with
a John McLeod(brother?) as crew as well. I think it is him. States
they were from Stornoway. Just across the water from Stoer but I need
to look more closely at this.

But from 1872 Roderick McLeod works as crew on ships around the Aussie
coastline so it seems likely at this stage.
Just wanted to let you know I am making progress.

Back now to searching out his work history and hoping it all falls
into place.
John McLeod worries me a little as he was with his parents on a census
in 1881 in Scotland so there is work to be done with him.

Judy thank you for your thoughts too, I didn't expect a prospective
rellie to pop up so soon. Looks like his brother John is a possibility
for coming out too but if it is him - Did he stay? may have worked his
way back back to his family for a visit!

Always more questions to be answered but at least I have a direction now.

Thank you to all. Everyone has been so helpful and welcoming.
Robyn

Whilst googling for information on Auckland regiments for someone, found
this war site, you might have ancestors there.
