Thought I'd post this about ancestry releasing Assisted Immigration to
Queensland (passenger lists - 1848 (by the way you;ll find that under New
South Wales) to 1912. I had a look, you get just the same information FOR
FREE off the State Archives of Queensland, click Indexes - look at Assisted
Immigration link. What they both don't show, but what reels show, is if
they could read/write, in family roups, religion, profession, if they had
relatives in the colonies, sometimes you get a location... but anyway take a
look.

Christine, I am going to be in Scotland for most of July too so I will
be interested to read comments on where to go, best research places etc.
We have a cottage out of Inverness for 3 weeks from 10th July and a few
days in Edinburgh prior to that.

This is the trip I was supposed to do last year but 'things' got in the
way. I was going by myself that time but this year I have the husband in
tow.

I also have Caithness as well as Sutherland. And I will be off to the
Stathnaver Museum where I sent information on my Mackays last year.

I will email you off list and see if our paths are likely to cross. I am
sure that they must somewhere on the high road!

Hello Christine
My sister and I spent about 2.5 weeks travelling the Highlands and seeing Edinburgh in 2009 and 2 weeks in England-
We generally found toilets a bit hard to find - even petrol stations and visitor centres did not have them - but there were plenty of shrubs - unlike in England where there were more people.
Most of the roads which show you the real countryside are very narrow - one lane with a passing lane- but most people are very polite and people dont generally drive as fast as in Oz except of the big motorways .
At Edinburgh I really enjoyed seeing the Woollen mill, not far from Edinburgh Castle- it goes 2 stoies under the ground- they have all the tartans - and you can see them being woven -
I bought 2.5 metres of ancient mckay tartan in pure wool, which is better quality than the cheaper version - I plan to make a skirt and vest and shawl.
Near Inverness the Culloden Centre is fascinating, as are whiskey distilleries- Inverness is the main centre of the Highlands and has a good Library.
Nairn is a beach resort,w e stayed at,  not too far east of Inverness if you like the sea- we found the Inveran Lodge  B and B owner very caring, and helpful with our diets (gluten free (Barb) and soy (me)   - and the room we shared was large and comfortable.
Newtonmore has a really good folk museum (open air) - it is west of Inverness - there is a crofters village there - very realistic
Caledonian canal at Fort Augustus with the swinging bridge- not too far away- also has a clan centre with performances
We came here after vising Skye - well worth a visit - magnificent hills/mts and water falls- walking tracks and a good visitor centre, also a croft village at kilmuir- we also saw a waterfall flowing into the sea here at Skye

Heading north -
Dunrobin Castle- we looked at from outside and used the loo- but didnt go any further - but it is an eye opener- huge castle - was home of the Sutherlands of the notorious Sutherland clearnaces (we refused to pay to go in when we found this out) . Has a collection of pictish stones which could be worth seeing
Dunbeath (on way to Wick) - has an interesting heritage centre if you have ancestors from there
Wick - is said to have a good Library if want to do research
Thurso in Caithness is very pretty and well laid out and has good shops - the Cooperative is a good food store, it has a library also not as well organised last year re family hsitory as some -(there is a lot to be found researching at edinburgh- the Peoples centre and the National Library ) the Thurso library does  have most  of the Cemeteries record books if you are seeking out ancestors in Caithness (as well as Sutherland) - this is how we eventually found the grave of our Caithness- 'Manson' ancestors- at a tiny town called Olrig outside Thurso)
The castle of Mey - now owned by Prince Charles is not far away - can tour at times
In Sutherland
we stayed at the  Sheiling B and B at  Melvich adjacent to  Port Skerra - I can recommend to ask at the Claymore Inn to hire an audio kit with map which is a self guided tour around the area (walking) - see the Drownings Memorial - fishermen- many of the people cleared had to supplement their incomes by fishing (in tiny boats)- which was very dangerous- also has people speaking Scots Gaelic on the tape.
We saw people surfing in wet suits in october at many of the beautiful beaches in the north - inc here

We visted the Strathnaver River - McKay/Mackay country - there is a trail here - you can buy a booklet at the Clan McKay Museum - in an old Church at Strathy -not far away -  the trail goes right down the river for about 20 miles - we didnt do it all - there are marked sites of iron age broches and cleared villages (c 1814-19) - Barb and I hope to go back next May and see more of this - being McKay descendants.
If anyone is very interested in this clearance area I am researching a grid of the over 40 villages cleared along this area- during the 2nd ? Sutherland clearances .

Durness- (to west) has a very interesting and beautiful sea cave- called the Smoo Hole - worth seeing

well apologies I could go on and on - we also visited many cemeteries looking for graves of ancestors - but thats a another story - which I will tell sometime if anyone is interested

regards
Caroline

Hello Betty
I so want to go back too - my sister and I loved the wild and somewhat barren landscapes and the beautiful beaches of the top of Scotland - but there is more I want to see tooo...
but not in Winter ??

We found the Manson grave at 6pm at Olrig near Thurso - when nearly dark on our last night at Melvich - it was beautiful pink stone and large - we found out later is gneiss and is very hard and comes from near Durness - it had our grt grandfather and his parents and 3 brothers and a sister -
The first thing my sister said is - "that is so sad - he -( David Manson ) is here and his wife is at Stradbroke" - she emigrated later - and she is buried in an unmarked grave at the Dunwich Cemetery on Stradbroke Island - she died at the Benevolent Asylum there - still dont know why she came out with their daughter- as they were better off then we thought previously-

we could not find any of our Mckay ancestors graves (that we knew of then) at all - though we looked in about 10 or more cemeteries in Sutherland and at Reay .

Did you want to tell me about your trip.?

regards
Caroline

Hi Caroline, I went to Scotland to meet my 1/2 first cousin twice removed.!...I called her Flossie.I had been lucky enought thru another group,to be told she could be related to me, and when we contacted her it felt like I knew her, really knew her! It was just wonderful, I fel like I was meeting my Grandma (I knew neither of them)....actually Flossie, was related to my GGGrandfather, Hector Macleod, by his second marriage, and he was her Grandpa by his second marriage!
We went up to Lochinver and stayed at a B&B, and travelled to Clachtoll to see Flossie and her family and they took us to see some relies in Stoer and to Raffin....I just loved the stark beauty of the area and the mountains and crags...AND the people....I felt a real connection! The towns were beautiful and the lovely stone buildings impressed me....we went to the Orkneys also, they were beautiful and wild.....and Castle Dunrobin! and the gardens!!!
and Golspie & Brora....I could go on for hours...unfotrunately, my husband was taken ill back in Oz, so I cut my trip short, BUT one day I will return and hope to just wander all around the top half and see it all properly.
I has better not keep going on, I get wound up when I think of that holiday, and it's hard to shut me up....
I am glad your trip was so great and you found your families resting places, it gives me goosebumps when I actually see the grave sites...

Hello Betty

Our Flossie strayed in with a cocker spaniel
 - late we rescued her back from the animal pound as her owners did not claim her -
she is a bitza- like me

-imagine a cross between a cairn and west highland white terrier -very long haired and soft hair
-  but cream with touches of what they call 'red'
- weighing though 10kg - and with a longer body bit like a corgi

There's little thumb nail photos but you can't read the headstone, haven't found any of mine yet, but that's not surprising..

"Every time I receive your newsletter I mean to write back and let you know how useful they are. One tip about the additional records almost hidden on the LDS family search website was brilliant!" Chris

This month there's a great new opportunity to find living relatives, and you can start right away - see my latest newsletter for full details! Here's a full list of the articles in this issue:

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things
A new opportunity to find cousins
Save money with this great pre-launch offer
Ireland 1901 now online - and it's free!
Less than 300 days to the 2011 Census
Half a million Army pensioners' records online
Getting copies of register entries
Finding records in the London area
Where were Londoners buried?
National Trust supporters get Ancestry discount
Free 24-hour access to findmypast Australia
Where there's a will there's often a way
Tales of yore
Peter's tips

To read the latest issue just click the link below (or else, highlight it, copy it, then paste it into your browser).  Remember, you don't need your password as it's not necessary to log-in to read the newsletter.

You can always access the most recent newsletter using the following link (so you may wish to add it to your favourites):

All of my newsletters since February 2009 are still online, and because each newsletter links to the one before, it's easy to catch up on any you've missed, or track down an article you'd like to re-read. One day soon there will be an online index - I just need to find the time!

By all means circulate my newsletter to friends or relatives who share your interest in family history - simply copy the first link above and paste it into your email. But why not invite them to join LostCousins so that they'll get a copy regularly?

Remember - there's no need to log-in to read the newsletter.

But if you want to log in to your LostCousins account, go to http://www.lostcousins.com then enter your email address and password.

If you can't remember your password (which begins with '8') you can get an instant email reminder by clicking the link below:

Please remember to update your My Details page when your email address is about to change - if I can't contact you then nor can your cousins!

Founder, LostCousins

If you don't want to receive these emails please change the settings on your My Details page, or contact me for help.
