Students PRoducing Organics Under The Sun
Hey SPROUTSTERS,
*Additional volunteer hours: If you are unable to make the Saturday hours from 11 AM until 3 PM, then perhaps Sundays at 5 PM until dark? This way, we can avoid the heat and get around those demanding work schedules. Eventually, I would like to change Saturday's volunteer hours into a time for FREE FOOD. Call it the weekly Garden Party, where most of the food travels about 20 feet from farm to table! *Garden tasks: SPROUTS has some salad greens already done grown, so we need to pick'em and we need your help. We also need help 'topping' our greens before they go bitter in the rising temperatures. *New location: SPROUTS is STILL looking for a new location to set up for the 2010 growing season. Any input/assistance is most welcome. *Schedule: EVERY Saturday we EAT from 11 AM to 3 PM. EVERY Sunday we work, from 5 PM unitl dark. Finally, if those hours are still not enough, send me an email and I will set up a different time for you. Lotsa Veggies, Benji Fraser SPROUTS President owner-sprouts-l@LISTSERV. INDIANA.EDU SPROUTS is located at 8th St. and Fess Ave Our goal is to educate about local, organically grown food on the IUB campus. ____________________________________________________________________________
[Hoosier Hills Food Bank] - Volunteer Opportunities
Gleaning Project/Raised Beds Assistant
Raised Beds Assistant: Hoosier Hills Food Bank is looking for an eager volunteer to commit one day per week to assist with the development and maintenance of seven raised beds on the HHFB property. Preferably, assistance will be needed May through September. Interested individuals can contact Kim at volunteer@....
Join Hoosier Hills Food Bank for their newest food rescue program: The Gleaning Project! Hoosier Hills Food Bank is building relationships with local farms to glean their excess, blemished but perfectly edible produce not fit for market. Join us as we travel to farms in Monroe and surrounding counties to assist with seasonal harvests or glean excess produce left in the fields. In our first year of the Gleaning Project, we worked with three farms in Jackson, Owen, and Monroe counties and collected over 4,000 pounds of fresh food! Join our mailing list for updates on gleaning trips or arrange for a group to help on a “farm day” in which we harvest at the end of a season. Contact the HHFB Volunteer Coordinator, Kim Kanney at volunteer@... or 334-8374. ____________________________________________________________________________
The bike project would appreciate it if you could forward this message to any of your members who might be interested. Thanks! The Bloomington Community Bike Project is in need of volunteers! With summer on we're having our annual increase in activity at the shop, but many of our core and knowledgeable volunteers are out of town or have other things in their life that need to be done. We're putting out a call to new volunteers, either knowledgeable or interested in becoming knowledgeable about bikes. The bike project is a great place to learn and teach bike mechanics, repair and maintenance. There are a lot of tasks that need to be done around the shop including working on shop bikes, shop organization and sorting, and helping BP patrons with their bike problems. In addition, we could also use some behind the scenes help with book keeping, e-mail answering and a variety of other potential tasks. If you're interested in volunteering or have any questions feel free to just show up at our regular shop hours: Monday and Wednesday 6-9pm, Saturday 12-3pm, and Sunday (Ladies night) from 6:30-8:30pm. Or e-mail us at Bloomington.Bike.Project@ gmail.com We are also always accepting usable donations! Community Bike Project 214 N. Madison St. Bloomington, IN 47404-3961 ___________________________________________________________________________

In his recent book, Scott Russel Sanders argues that a conservation ethic is crucial to addressing such challenges as the disruption of global climate, the depletion of the ozone layer, the felling of forests and spreading of deserts, the poisoning of lakes by acid rain, the collapse of ocean fisheries, the extinction of species, the looming shortages of oil and fresh
water, and the spread of famine and epidemic disease.
He is concerned with preserving and nurturing human as well as natural gifts, stories as well as wetlands, farmers’ markets as well as topsoil, science along with warblers and whales. Sanders’ book asks how we might shift from a culture of consumption to a culture of conservation. What would a truly sustainable economy look like? What responsibilities do we bear for the well-being of future generations? What responsibilities do we bear toward the millions of other species on Earth? In a time of ecological calamity and widespread human suffering, how should we imagine a good life? A Conservationist Manifesto seeks answers to these pressing questions, and more, in writing infused with a sense of hope as well as a sense of place. Scott Russell Sanders has authored nineteen books and appeared in numerous magazines, including Harper’s and Audubon. He has received several prestigious writing awards, received three honorary degrees, and has been honored with Indiana University's highest teaching award. More information about Scott Russell Sanders can be found at http://www.indiana.edu/~mfawrite/sanders.html. _________________________________________________________________________
Permit sought for Southern Indiana biomass energy plant (notice from John Blair)
http://www.courierp ress.com/ news/2009/ may/26/permit- sought-southern- indiana-biomass- energy-plan/ MILLTOWN, Ind. — The developers of a proposed $90 million biomass power plant in southern Indiana say it would release hundreds of tons of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide, as well as some hazardous air pollutants by burning wood waste to generate electricity. Liberty Green Renewables LLC estimates in its state air permit application that the southern Indiana plant would release 245 tons of nitrogen oxide and 226 tons of carbon dioxide a year. In addition, the project about 30 miles northwest of Louisville, Ky., would also produce more than 11 tons of chemicals listed as hazardous air pollutants, the application states. Liberty’s permit application begins a monthslong review process by state regulators, although the company still must submit water-quality applications with the state and the Army Corps of Engineers. The 32-megawatt Milltown operation is one of several Liberty expects to develop in the Midwest. The plant would burn wood waste from sawmills, furniture factories, land clearing and some switch grass and corn stover to generate power. But nearby residents, environmental activists and others have raised concerns about how the plant would affect local air and water pollution. The Crawford County commissioners voted unanimously this spring to ask federal authorities to conduct a full environmental impact study of the project. Liberty’s goal is to obtain a state air permit in early 2010 and to fire up the burners by 2011. The state has 120 days from the submission to issue a permit. In the next few months, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s staff will write a permit setting out the details of the project, including emissions limits. Once that is published, residents and local officials can request a public hearing. Mark Woods, a member of the Concerned Citizens of Crawford County, said the group “will be requesting a public hearing and we will be asking that it be here” and not in Indianapolis. Tim Maloney, senior policy director with the Hoosier Environmental Council, said he had serious questions about the plant’s location, less than a mile from the Blue River and amid terrain with underlying caves and streams. “The Blue River has some of the best water quality and biological diversity of any stream in the state of Indiana. That kind of setting and natural diversity is very unusual” and must be protected, Maloney said. Liberty estimates levels of each type of air emission would be below a key threshold for air pollution — 250 tons a year. That would avoid classifying the plant as a “major source” of pollution and subjecting it to a more involved review process. IDEM spokesman Rob Elstro said the agency will evaluate the emission estimates and air-pollution control equipment Liberty plans to use to calculate how they would affect air quality. Lanesville businessman Larry Ott said he and the project’s other partners are weighing several water-quality plan options and can’t predict when a permit application would be ready. But he said the air permit application supports the partners’ assertions that they intend to create a “clean” energy project. “This is considered a ‘minor source’ as emissions go, so it’s clean,” Ott said. *Check out the Valley Watch website at: <http://valleywatch. net> *John Blair* "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." 402 W. Washington St. W255 B Indianapolis, IN 46204-2748 Phone: (317) 232-4200 For immediate release: May 12, 2009 Seeking Indiana’s largest trees: Do you know of an extraordinarily large tree? The Indiana DNR is accepting nominations for the 2010 Big Tree Register, a list of the largest known native trees in the state, published every five years. The application requires three measurements of a tree—total circumference, in inches, at 4 1/2 feet above the ground; total height, in feet; and average crown spread, in feet. The total size of a tree is calculated using the formula: circumference + height + 1/4 average crown spread. The tree of each species with the highest total is Indiana’s largest. Each tree nominated is verified for species and size before acceptance in the register. For more information about nominating a tree for the register or to receive a nomination form, The nomination form is at

This is the sentiment of Steve Conard’s latest collection of original scenes of vibrant color and natural beauty, taken from his experiences in the wilderness of Indiana and other regions. Steve Conard’s work, through the effective expression of atmospheric perspectives, allows the viewer to contrast and compare the intricate and rocky layers of Arizonia’s Superstition Mountian area, with lush and organic layers of Southern Indiana forest and farm land.
