You could try the local newspapers. Sun runs travel features and I think some of the Black Press local ones do too.

Hi everyone,

Every year, Canada hosts one mystery conference for writers and fans. The conference has agent pitch sessions, lots of panels, and evening entertainment. This three-day event is usually held in Toronto, and occasionally Ottawa, every June. But in 2011, it will be held in Victoria at the Pacific Grand Hotel which is located right by the harbour. If you register before March 1st, you'll get the early registration fee, and registration is capped at 200, which makes it fun, friendly, and informal. Guests of honour this year will be Michael Slade, William Deverell, and Laurie King. For more information, go to www.bloodywords2011.com

Hope to see you there,
Debra Purdy Kong

If you are a writer, you need a good critique group. The evening Port Moody Writers' Group runs on Mondays from 7pm to 9:30pm at the Kyle Centre, behind the old City Hall on St. John's Street. The winter term starts on Jan 10 and finishes on Mar 14 and, due to vacations, we have a couple of spots open.
We start with half an hour of questions, discussion, and guidance on how to get published; the rest of the time we spend respectfully critiquing each other's work-in-progress. For more details, email me at info@... and we can then arrange to discuss it on the phone.
We'd love to welcome a couple more emerging or experienced writers of fiction or nonfiction to reach our maximum of 12.
Call 604.469.4561 to register and ask for the Creative Writing course on Mondays. About $100 per term and well worth it!

Through the courtesy of the Surrey Arts Council, I will be the writer in residence at the new Newton Cultural Centre at 13530 72nd Ave, Surrey, BC, V3W 2P1. I will be there every Monday, starting January 3, 2011, from 10 AM to noon.

This centre is near the intersection of King George and 72nd Ave. It’s in a converted fire hall, across from McDonalds. There’s ample parking, but it’s best to approach the centre from the west, since 72nd has a barrier in the middle of the street there. For example, enter 72nd from 132nd Street and drive toward King George. It’ll be on your right, just before King George.

All are welcome. Bring your stories, articles, novels, poems, whatever and I will try to help you toward publication. No appointment necessary. Come for the writing, but enjoy the art.

This winter-spring I’m offering two courses:

 1.               A seminar for those with an ongoing novel, book, collection of short items, whatever. At lease half of our class time will be working on individual projects and the other half will be on some of the finer points of writing, such as point of view, setting, writing style and unity. The course will run for six weeks at the Cultural Centre beginning Monday, January 24 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The cost is $75.00

 2.               An Introduction to Creative Writing will cover the basics of writing, including character, plot, poetry, article writing, novels, short stories, marketing, and the rules of writing (which you can break if you know which rule you’re breaking and why). Student work will occupy the second hour of every class. This course will run for six weeks beginning Monday, April 4 from 11:30 to 1:30 at the Cultural Centre. The cost is $75.00.

To sign up for either course, contact the Surrey Arts Council:

Phone = 604-585-2787 between 9:30 AM to 3 PM or leave a voice mail.

I guess there's a mis-understanding there ... I didn't mean they run writing courses, just that it might be a good venue for your school to offer courses in. The only writing related one  they ran this season was "How to Write a Book in 101 Days." Which was interesting, but not aimed at fiction writers :O)

Applications for a residency at Haig-Brown House for December 2011 to March 2012 are requested. The applicant will be a published writer who wishes to spend the winter months (or a portion thereof) living in Haig-Brown House on the banks of the Campbell River on Vancouver Island. A stipend of up to $2000 per month, depending on available funding, will be provided.

Thanks for the clarification.
The School is no longer seeking venues for its own courses, but partnering with
other agencies on literacy activities.

**Create Characters That Last**
LOCATION: Online Class (via Yahoo Groups)
DATES: February 2-16, 2011 (2 weeks)
REGISTER: $35 at http://editordevil.blogspot.com/

Characters should feel so REAL to readers they jump off the page. This class is
geared toward fiction writers who want to create fascinating
characters—characters readers want to take home for dinner.

We'll examine different profiling modes, including The Hero's Journey,
epic-literature archetypes, psychology models, and even spiritual archetypes.
Depending on your genre, you'll also learn the appropriate type of relationships
to create between characters, both primary and secondary. Whether you want to
create the next James Bond or Ethan Fromm, the next Indiana Jones or Bridgette
Jones... this class will help you break the mold on character development.

You'll receive 6 Lessons that will teach you to:
1. Answer the 3 key questions about your main characters.
2. Apply the 5 "musts" for character introductions.
3. Layer action effectively to "show, not tell".
4. Build character development arcs more easily.
5. Leverage dialogue between characters (primary and secondary).
6. Make heroes/heroines/villains interact effectively.
7. Know when heroes/villains should win or lose and why.
8. Make plotting easier through character-driven storytelling.
9. Choose the right POV character for the story.

My goal is to help you create the next break-out book with 3-demensional
characters everyone talks about. Emphasis will be placed on building unique
characters and stand-out heroes, heroines and villains.

This is from my blog, and it got a lot of responses because of the body language
issues discussed, so thought I'd share it.... Beware where you point your navel!

****
Don't Tell Me You Care, Show Me
(more character development do's and don'ts from my upcoming class)

Don't… explain a character's response to a situation—or to another
character—when action would prove their response.

Especially don't use internal dialogue to do the ALL work for you. This is
cheating the reader from experiencing the hero/heroine's reactions and coming to
their own conclusion about what the hero/heroine is feeling or thinking.
Internal dialogue should only tell the reader what they can't see or know for
themselves, such as secrets, memories or unexpected reactions.

Do… use body language and external dialogue to show how a character feels or
thinks.

Actions speak louder than words. Character postures and actions more potently
reveal if they are nervous, hurt, excited or dangerous. Since words can be
false, most humans instinctively register actions in their subconscious to weigh
truth.

When you pit actions against the reader's expectations, you can create
especially tense situations.

For example, a woman with her husband at a party may meet a handsome, sexy,
powerful man. She may speak casually to him, as if he's no more important than
the bartender. But if she's attracted to the newcomer, she'll likely open her
chest or her body, bare her neck by pushing away her hair, dilate her pupils,
touch her neck or rub her ankles together. She may even laugh at his bad jokes.

Her husband may start to insult the man as a power-play to hide his insecurity.
But in the end, her navel will point at the man she wants to go home with. Same
for the fellows; whichever man takes the posture of the gorilla—chest out, chin
raised, back straightened to the point of being arched, jaw set—is likely
claiming territory.
****
Best,
Christine
