I'll add you to the reading list, and post the full schedule and
further info. here in a week or so.

Yes. You can pay at the door. $5.00 covers refrehsments and other
incidentals - the room costs are covered by the library - so
any 'profits' I'll donate back to the Library.

See you there.

The View From Here :  The Power of Point of View in Fiction (and Nonfiction)
Saturday, October 11, 1 - 5 pm.
Alliance for Arts, Suite 100 - 938 Howe Street, Vancouver.
$65 for Fed members, $75 for non-members.

Good control of point of view in short and long fiction, for adults and children (and in nonfiction, too!) can determine how compelling your story is, how well you get and keep the reader's attention, and if you manage to get your point across successfully. This workshop for emerging and experienced writers in all genres will include discussion, examples, and lots of writing exercises to help you get a handle on this slippery element of craft.

Popular workshop presenter Lois Peterson is the author of 101 – and More – Writing Exercises to Get You Started & Keep You Going (Metta Publications), and the children's novel Meeting Miss 405 (Orca Book Publishers, October 2008). Subject: Shebeen Club Monday, Sept 15: intro to the BC Federation of Writers

This month we've moved our meeting to Monday instead of Tuesday and
across the street so that we can have the brand-new Shebeen all to
ourselves! We'll play host to Sylvia Taylor, President of the
Federation of BC Writers, who will give us an overview of the Fed and
what it can do for its writers. Some of you will remember Sylvia from
a our June meeting, when she spoke on memoir writing and editing.

Welcome to all the first-time Shebeeners! Our meetings are a convivial
gathering of literary types of all sorts: editors, writers,
publishers, booksellers, and students as well. All are welcome.

Go into the Irish Heather GastroPub, then through the back door to The
Shebeen Whisky House, 212 Carrall Street in Gastown. If you get lost,
staff can show you the way. Note that this is across the street from
the old location.

Your $15 admission includes a great dinner of bangers and mash or
vegetarian pasta from the kitchen of the Irish Heather gastropub, plus
one glass of wine or pint of beer or pop.

Meet and Greet 7-7:30

Listen and Learn 7:30-8

Signups, networking, and complaining about agents 8-9!

Subject: IMPRINT - New email newsletter of Fraser Valley-area writing/literary/literary-related events
lpwords
Send Email Send Email

Dear writer/reader...

On October 10, I will be distributing the first of a monthly email newsletter called Imprint.

This will consist mainly of information about upcoming writing/literary events in the Fraser Valley Area - i.e. 'this side' of the Fraser River.

Although it might duplicate much of what can be found elsewhere on websites such as the Federation of BC Writers, Canadian Author's Assoc., LPwordsolutions, local arts councils, libraries etc. it's a chance to have events close to your heart distributed to a specific mailing list. I'll be sending the newsletter to the Fraser Valley members of the Federation of BC Writers and to about 150 of my writing/literacy/literary-related contacts, and posting it listservs such as surreywriters.

Timeline:
Send me your event listings the between the 5th and 8th of each month inclusive.
Imprint will be sent out as close to the 10th of each month as I'm able.
Event listings in each issue will only cover the one-month period between the 10th of one month and the next.
Please do not send me advance listings as I will not be able to archive them.
Please send them in the following format only to save on editing at this end.

  • Date and time
  • EVENT TITLE
  • Location, including specific address
  • One-liner 'blurb'
  • Cost
  • Registration info.
  • Contact info. and website url if appropriate
  • If you want to list a sinle event that is offered at multiple times and locations, please use the format above,
noting the various locations/dates/time under the event title. Do not send individual listings for each
    presentation of the same event.
My goal is for the newsletter to be short and sweet.
I will only be able to include information submitted in this specific format.

I may also include links to online articles, contest calls, out of area events, new websites etc. that I think might be of interest. If you have suggestions please forward them to me, too, and I will include them as appropriate.

I look forward to receiving your event listings of the Oct. 10 - Nov. 10 period between Oct 5 and Oct.  8

If you are receiving this email, you will be on the mailing list to receive monthly issues of IMPRINT.
Reply to this email with 'Remove from list' in the subject line if you do not wish to receive the monthly newsletter.

Hi Everyone,

After five years of marketing authors, I have finally built myself a new website for Dreams Aloud Promotions. I am marketing authors, speakers and healing artists and look forward to possibly being of assistance to some of you.

The site is very new and needs some tweaking. Feedback is welcome. I will need another page reflecting the amount of work I have done with equine-related books and products, as that has become a specialty of mine.

If anyone is looking to build a site themselves and save money, even if you feel technologically challenged, www.highpowersites.com has many templates and images to choose from and they are very supportive. They are located in Vancouver - check it out. If I can do it, you can, too. It is freeing to be able to build a site easily and to change it easily any time you wish.

Warm regards,

Hi everyone

We still need a few more volunteers for this year's SiWC -- October 24-26!  Still needed are:
(1) volunteers to help on-site at the conference (benefits include sitting in on workshops and getting fed!) and
(2) drivers to transport our presenters from the airport (benefits are that you can have an editor or agent in your car as a captive audience for those subtle pitches!).  Also, for drivers, $20 (per trip) stipend for gas, and parking receipts reimbursed.

Please consider pitching in -- it's the volunteers that really make the SiWC rock!  Contact Camille if you can help:  c.netherton@...

Contact Camille if you can help:  c.netherton@siwc.ca

Thank you!

Hi all - I am just relaying this information from my friend, Barb
Rees, in Powell River. There is a possibility some of you might like
to attend. Please contact her directly if you do.

Powell River Festival of Writers Fall Fest
Nov.1, 2009
By Barb Rees
What do you get when you put a pilot/author together with a poet, a
publisher, an editor, and a travel writer? You get years of
experience all rolled into a full day of writing tips. Wayne Lutz,
Tanis Helliwell, Paul Blakey, and Barb Rees have 14 published books
between them with more on the way. November 1, together with Jena
Lohrbach, they'll convey that wisdom at the 5th annual Fall Fest.

Tanis brings with her over twenty years of helping people become
conscious creators. In addition she is also a keynote speaker with
clients including IBM, David Suzuki Foundation, and University of
Calgary. Her literary creations consist of: Embraced by Love, Take
Your Soul to Work, Summer With the Leprechauns: A True Story,
Decoding Destiny: Keys to Mankind's Spiritual Evolution. Tanis will
be teaching "Poetry as A Writing Style." This workshop will be
valuable no matter what your style. We all can improve our ability to
paint pictures with words. Whether poet or other discipline, all will
to come away inspired.

www.iitransform.com

The afternoon session "Taking the Fear Out of Publishing" features
successful self-published authors Wayne Lutz and Barb Rees.

Wayne and wife Margy came from California for a visit, fell in love
with Powell River, and stayed for the long haul with a float cabin on
Powell Lake. What a contrast of life styles from Wayne's background
as professor of Aeronautics, and flight instructor to hopelessly
addicted to life on the coast as an author. On their website:
www.powellriverbooks.com and their blog
http://powellriverbooks.blogspot.com you get the feeling these two
are officially part of our local fabric. With his "Up" series we've
learned more about our area than some of us long time residents ever
knew: Up the Winter Trail, Up the Strait, Up the Lake, Up the Main,
Up the Airway, and then there's Farther Up the Lake. Wayne's just a
very UP kind of person.

Barb Rees, self-published author of Lessons From the Potholes of
Life, and RV Canada On A Dime And A Dream traveled across
Canada with husband Dave twice. In 2007 they took their RV book on a
national book tour. Combining her lively speaking ability with travel
and writing has given her the perfect formula for making their dreams
come true. Known as a Big Dreamer, you can't be in her company for
long before you'll feel inspired to do something about your own
dreams. www.write2dream.com Barb founded
the writer's group Sassyscribes, followed by Powell River Festival of
Writers five years ago. Both groups continue to evolve and grow.
Between Wayne and Barb they will bring to the workshop useful self-
publishing tips, along with realistic pros and cons.

A writer's ability to write will improve over time if they take the
editorial suggestions of Jena Lohrbach seriously. Jena combines a
Masters of English with a life-long love of reading to focus a
powerful and critical editor's eye on superfluous words, sentence
structure, word tense, readability, continuity and making your work
publisher-friendly by applying the appropriate style manual. The
list of titles Jena has received editing credit for is extensive and
diverse, such as: Thomas Boyd (Biography), Up The Strait (Local
Interest/Memoir), Sexual Politics (Social Studies), The Destruction
of Young Lawyers (Academic Treatise), and many others. Her
web published review efforts have won her an invitation to be a
Review Blogger for Random House. Jena lives in Powell River with
her husband, who is now a better writer because he does as she
suggests.

The first publisher invited to the first festival was W.Paul Blakey.
It's fitting that he return. Paul, who lives in Roberts Creek, is the
author of The Muscle Book and Stretching Without Pain. He's an
obsessive scribbler – owner, director, and head pooh-bah(his
words) of Twin Eagles Publishing. A proponent of penniless
publishing, he is fervent in his desire to free the creative from the
strictures of propriety. His latest project was to work with Rai
Purdy's widow on her memoirs Verity Purdy: Dancing on Air

It's going to be a packed day that will inspire you to either start
writing, get back on track or get that book or magazine article
finally finished. The day starts at 9:30 with an hour break at noon,
and finishes at 4:30. Refreshments and snacks provided … lunch not
included. Registration: $50, forms available online:
www.festivalofwriters.com or by calling Barb: 604-485-2732 or email:

We're been having problems off and on with that email address. It
should be fixed in the next couple hours. You can also use the contact
form on the website: http://www.siwc.ca/contact/index.php

Heather, in the meantime I've forwarded your message to Camille. She
said she'd be in touch tomorrow.

Hi everyone

There seems to be a *most untimely* problem with Camille's e-mail address (that I posted in my previous "SiWC call for volunteers" message).

Please e-mail your volunteer interest / inquiries to me directly and I will forward them to Camille.   (Sorry 'bout that!)

Cheers
