"Don't be fooled by the title of Billy Eichner's new show, because this
comic isn't terrified of anything (certainly not of Hugh Jackman's
handlers). Vicious and very funny...laceratingly funny...sometimes
startlingly original social commentary. Eichner could easily become the
gay Richard Pryor. He's already discovered the alchemy that turns rage
into humor." - Backstage '09
SHSAA CLASS CHALLENGE CAMPAIGN LETTER
-----
Title: Why Stuyvesant Needs to be a Part of Your Annual Giving
Dear Stuyvesant Alum,
One of the benefits of being Stuyvesant's Principal or a Director on
the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association (SHSAA) Board is the
opportunity to constantly witness our community in action. This
community extends from our youngest student (a role that we have all
inhabited) to our most experienced alumni. The ability to participate
in these gatherings across our spectrum of students and alumni reveals
a simple fact that we all know: "Stuyvesant is a special place that
brings together incredibly talented people and launches rich and
fruitful lives."
Although this is the case, our community has not been without its
challenges. From supporting our country through World Wars I and II,
outlasting over a century of recessions, and dealing with the loss of
our alumni and home in 9/11, our community has risen to the challenges
faced by our school, our city, our country, and our world. This may
sound far-fetched, but take a moment to reflect on your own life or the
opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni and you will be amazed by
how much you have accomplished. Producing individuals who positively
impact their communities was the initial goal of our school and it
remains our goal today.
As we have noted in past newsletters, the most imminent challenge that
Stuyvesant faces is securing ongoing funding to continue providing the
same high quality education our alumni have received to current
students. As mandated by the Board of Education, our student body has
steadily increased while Stuyvesant has faced budget cuts in reaction
to the current economic environment. This has led to drastic actions
to stretch our resources. For example, we have converted a portion of
our library into additional classroom space, delayed integral physical
and IT infrastructure upgrades, and significantly limited the budgets
of our extracurricular activities and their ability to compete with
rival institutions.
While we have focused past fundraising efforts on the school's
immediate needs, the truth of the matter is that Stuyvesant has always
sought to provide a level of education that is beyond our public
funding means. In fact, our only limitations have been the imagination
of our students, the resourcefulness of our faculty and staff, and
ultimately the generosity of our alumni. Without donations from
generous alumni, basic needs such as updated textbooks, computer and
lab equipment, lunch subsidies for students who need economic
assistance, and sometimes even chairs and desks would oftentimes not be
met in a timely enough manner to maintain our students' competitiveness
with better funded private institutions. In addition, many of our
extracurricular activities, a necessary complement to classroom
instruction, would not be possible without alumni funding to support
the operating budgets of our teams, clubs, publications, and other
activities. Generous alumni have helped to support these programs for
decades and we need the support of our alumni going forward if we are
to continue providing the same high quality education to current
students.
This year, in order motivate our alumni, SHSAA has asked students who
receive your funding to offer their testimonials of how it has
positively impacted their lives. We have included some of these
testimonials in the following pages and have posted many more online at
http://www.shsaa.org/ or http://www.stuy.edu/. Some are written with
an appreciative earnestness that can not help but transport you back to
your own experience.
We are also implementing a class challenge campaign that is supported
by Stuyvesant and many of your class leaders - as we write this letter,
we are still in the process of reaching out to class officers and
reunion organizers to set an appropriate challenge. It is not intended
to be a challenge between classes, but rather a monetary amount and
participation target set by each class' leaders to motivate your
class. We are confident in our community's ability to pull together
towards the common goal of maintaining the Stuyvesant that we have all
benefitted from, and generous alumni have already come forward to
donate towards their class goal or to offer matching grants to motivate
their classmates. Recognizing the personal challenges that some of our
alumni may face in this environment, we are more focused on
participation as we believe that widespread involvement by alumni
giving what they can (no amount is too small) will help Stuyvesant and
its students immensely this year. For more information about your
class challenge please visit SHSAA's website at
http://www.shsaa.org/classchallenge [WE NEED TO ESTABLISH URL]. We
hope that you will consider participating in your class challenge and,
as always, SHSAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your
contributions are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Finally, this year, we are more dedicated than ever to helping our
alumni reconnect with Stuyvesant and each other. Towards this end,
SHSAA will be hosting several events throughout the year to facilitate
interactions between alumni, classmates and students. We hope to see
you at some of them and to thank you for your generous support in
person.
Thank you in advance for your help and consideration,

It has been quite awhile since we’ve actively sent a message out.I think since the last message went out we were in the middle of the historic Presidential campaign and very much more has happened around the world featuring all of you and all that you do and enjoy. Many have you have celebrated milestone celebrations (ones for yourself, loved ones, and/or some of you with your respective new little ones!) and others have continued to make sure that we are involved with the community we care about. Here’s some alumni news that I’ve taken the time out to select and share.
Hope you’re all and keep in touch!

By the way, your college (undergraduate, that is) 10 year reunions are quickly approaching, so keep an eye out for those plans.
NEWS:
1) Classmates:
a) Great job Quinn Raymond as he made was selected one of the finalists to become the ultimate winner of the WNYC radio Satire Slam! contest
If Quinn is picked as a finalist he'll get to perform at the Greene Space--the new WNYC auditorium. It will be decided from the four remaining contestants in our Satire Slam! Finale. Judges Mo Rocca, comedian, and Faith Salie, actress/comedian and former host of Fair Game for PRI, provide commentary on the contestants' work.
Note from Quinn:
I just wanted to take a moment to thank Brian, Faith, and Mo for their feedback and thoughtful comments. It was a little intimidating to be there in front of the pros, but I really enjoyed participating and they were very kind. I hope that in the future WNYC is able to do more humorous segments like this.
I also wanted to congratulate Gerry on his win-- I really enjoyed his song. Kudos to Erin and Charles too, they were able to write excellent follow-up pieces with very limited time.
e) I’m not big on saying things about what I do, but it would be nice to spread the word about Con Edison the company I believe I do so much good for.I was awarded the company’s most prestigious honor, the 2009 Con Edison Living Our Values Award, for my work as an Electrical Engineer within the company helping design and maintain a safe and reliable underground electrical network system and also being active within the community with mentoring students with Asian American community awareness, political empowerment, high school robotics and technology mentoring, and also my alumni connecting.Andy Woo at the May Awards ceremony:
2) Stuy Ranks 23rd In American High Schools In Their 2nd Annual High School Rankings:
For a place like Stuy, rankings do not mean anything on the outside, so we as students were never ranked any way.But what it can do is promote spirited competition even with our friendly neighbors at Bronx Science.Interestingly in this updated annual U.S. News ranking the school went from 15th to 23rd.For some insight in the rankings, a newer small school: the Dual Language and Asian Studies HS (located at the Seward Park HS campus) ranked a phenomenal No. 31 on the same list of the country’s top high schools ahead of the likes of our historical city rivals:
29 High School of American Studies at Lehman College Bronx, NY
31 Dual Language and Asian Studies High School New York, NY
32 Staten Island Technical High School Staten Island, NY
33 Bronx High School of Science School Bronx, NY
38 Baccalaureate School of Global Education Long Island City, NY
48 Queens High School of Science at York College Jamaica, NY
In December 2008, Stuyvesant High School's bid to install metal detectors as a cheating deterrent had been rejected. The school’s principal, Stanley Teitel, confirmed that he had asked the Department of Education for permission to temporarily install roving scanners for the January 2009 exams at the school.
This May, Stuyvesant High School began scanning students with hand-held metal detectors to seize hidden cellphones and other electronic gadgets before Advanced Placement exams earlier this month, The New York Post reports. Administrators at the College Board — which runs the AP exam program — and national cheating and safety experts said the school’s use of wands to ward off cheating (as opposed to detecting weapons) was unprecedented. One student did admit that devices such as iPhones are used to cheat on exams.
With 114 semifinalists, New York is the best-represented state. The top two public high schools with the most semifinalists in New York are also gold medal schools. They are No. 23-ranked Stuyvesant High School, which produced 11 semifinalists, and No. 33-ranked Bronx High School of Science, which produced 9.
The other specialized high schools they were trying out for were Brooklyn Technical High School; Brooklyn Latin School; Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan; the Bronx High School of Science; the High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College; the Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, and the High School of American Studies at Lehman College.
Fears that the tanking economy could drive private- and parochial-school students to the city’s elite public high schools in droves were not backed up by Department of Education data. Applications from children in nonpublic schools to the likes of Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Technical High Schools edged up only slightly this year, to 4,553 from 4,470 last year.
Attorney General Eric Holder was the keynote speaker at the 2009 Department of Justice African-American History Month program. In his remarks he called the American people "essentially a nation of cowards" in failing to openly discuss the issue of race. He urged Americans to engage in forthright discussions of race issues rather than ignore topics that some might find uncomfortable.
David Axelrod, '72 was Chief Campaign Strategist for President Barack Obama's presidential campaign, is currently serving as senior Adviser to the President.
While at Stuyvesant, Axelrod was the editor of Caliper, the literary magazine. He was part of the Student Parent Teacher Committee, the forerunner of the Student Leadership Team, a member of the debate team, and he wrote for The Spectator. Would any of us be able to meet the next President of the United States during our careers?
Harris Pastides '71 becomes the new President at the University of South Carolina
Dr. Pastides '71 had been elected as the 28th President of the University of South Carolina. He had served, formerly, as VP for Research and Health Sciences, and Dean of Public Health. Before joining USC in 1998 he was a Professor of Epidemiology and Department Chair at the Univ. of Massachusetts Amherst:
Dr. Chalupa will serve as George Washington University's chief research officer, charged with leading GW into the top tier of the nation's research institutions.
A scholarship created to in memory of former Stuy Alumni Association President Sari Halper Dickson '87, who passed away on January 30, 2009 from cancer
Mr. Danny Jaye, as New Jersey's Bergen County Academies has brought the school attention with the 2007 Intel Distinction recognition and this year as New Jersey’s top overall performer.
Ms. Susan Brustein continues to strive for greater science and technology education at a great high school as Townsend Harris’s Assistant Principal of Science and Technology while being recognized in November as the recipient of the Intel 2008 School of Distinction for Science Excellence award.
Hope
you are all doing well! While running through Summer and Fall and being
in
midst of those Presidential Debates and passing many of our classmates’
milestone birthdays through 2008, it was about time that we announce

FRONTRUNNERS is a smart and
funny political documentary that follows the
student council presidential
campaign at one of the country's most
prestigious public high schools: StuyvesantHigh
School
in New York City.
An entertaining and symbolic
campaign film, put forth in classic verité style, we follow four
charming and
idiosyncratic candidates as they navigate an electoral process that is
said to
be one of the most competitive at the high school level. These teenaged
candidates face the same issues as candidates of any age, such as
picking the
'right' running mate, shaking as many hands as possible, preparing for
televised debates, impressing the pundits and journalistic community,
addressing sensitive race-related issues, and mobilizing an apathetic
voter
base.
A microcosm of the U.S.
Presidential elections, Caroline Suh's film shows politicking and
pluralities
through the lens of the adolescent experience.
"It's the hardest race I ever
fought."

Marie Ewald wins Obama HQ contest
Message from Marie from the campaign trail following a contest
she had been communicating through the website: https://donate.barackobama.com/marie
I haven't told them yet but...Barack Obama
is going to
personally call my parents!
I'm so sorry for the delayed notification. It was a real
nail-biter. They had to count and re-count the donations, and then
consult
higher authorities. (Remind you of anything?)
But ultimately, your gifts added up to 40 more
than anyone
else here on staff. Jaws dropped around here, especially mine, when I
found out
I had 287 donors! You helped raise $10,000 for Barack in 2 days. That's
extraordinary.
Thank you for stepping up -- and double thanks for
getting
your parents to give and your cousins and coworkers and even old camp
friends... It was also great to read your notes about phone banking,
traveling
to a battleground state, making your
first or
fourth donation... Your support and enthusiasm will easily carry me
through the
last 32 long days...
I hope you know that every single dollar is strengthening
our ability to compete in key battleground
states
like Florida
and
Pennsylvania
and
Ohio.
This week, early voting began
in Ohio.
We're no longer just preparing for Election
Day.
It's here. So thanks for all your support, and I'll let you know how
the surprise phone call goes (I'll even try to record it). But for
now...
shhhh...
Much love,
Marie

2) Stuyvesant ranked 15th in the country in U.S. News Public HS
rankings
Although it was #1 in the City, I'm sure many of your weren't surprised
by this latest incarnation of rankings to get people either buy
magazines
or lay down a greater rivalry and competitive atmosphere between our
national
rivals, Thomas Jefferson, besides Bronx Science.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods and activities. I got word
of some these news bits from fellow classmates and friends; interesting
notes to distribute before the unofficial end to summer with Labor Day
around the corner. I know I've seen a few of you some events, so keep
celebrating the success. Here's some of the news including a book
announcement of a book on Stuy:
Stuyvesant Alum '85 Book on Stuy out Tuesday, 8/21
So selective that it admits only 3 percent of the kids who take its

Mr. Frank says the cost of a movie for two or 3 drinks in most bars in
NYC. Let's use this opportunity to help a cause. The chosen I work

"When it comes to those criteria, the highly competitive school on
Chambers St. received a "proficient" - the middle verdict on a scale of
undeveloped, proficient or well-developed. The consultants knocked
Stuyvesant for teachers who do little more than lecture to the school's
3,000 students, and for stressed-out kids who don't know where to get
help. Stuyvesant critics suggest the consultants are unmasking
problems hidden behind the phenomenal test scores of self-motivated
kids. But others say the city is just wasting money."
We all know that whatever people say is probably true ;)!
Hi all,
After sending the e-mail last week, I got word from Ilya Magazanin of his work on a feature film that he co-edited that's also premiering at Tribeca Film festival the same night as Lee Wang's documentary. Ilya says:
"So come out to support ALL the Stuy 96 alums that are making it in the film industry.
The film is "Amexicano" and here is the screening info. You can hang outside of Stuy before or after the screening. 2 blocks is a short enough walk."

With tax season and winter trying to leave the realm of the Northeast
to usher in spring well underway, it's about time to make same awesome
announcements and news from our fellow classmates:
1) Lee Wang and 2007 Tribeca Film Festival selection:
Our classmate, Lee Wang and her short film, Someone Else's

This is Lee's message:
Please join
me for the New York premiere of SOMEONE ELSE'S
WAR , a
documentary I directed about three Filipino contractors who travel
thousands of miles from home to work in Iraq. The workers featured in
the film are part of an invisible army of more than 30,000 low-wage
workers who do the dirty work on US bases--cleaning toilets, serving
food and even hauling fuel on some of the most dangerous roads in
Iraq. For

On behalf of the Stuyvesant High School Parents' Association, I invite you to join with us at our Lunar Feast in supporting our students. Our fourth Lunar Feast will be held on Friday, March 16th at the Jing Fong Restaurant (20 Elizabeth Street, NYC) in Chinatown. This event is a celebration of our community and a tribute to the hopes and aspirations of our students. All net proceeds for the evening will benefit the Stuy PA college services.
Last year more than 600 people attended the event, helping us raise funds to provide services supporting college tours, informational programs for students and parents, college counseling, and translation services. Your support will help all of them succeed. Our gala event will feature rich cultural performances, including many performances by our own students. It will also have a silent auction at which you may bid on many valuable items and services, and a raffle featuring many desirable prizes. At this gala, you will have a chance to network with other concerned parents at Stuyvesant, and to meet and greet school administrators and elected officials. Please also bring friends and family to make this a true community building event. To donate an item to auction or make a contribution to help underwrite the feast, please use this Lunar Feast Donation Form: http://www.stuy-pa.org/padocs/2007_Lunar_Feast_Donation_form.pdf

site at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stuy96/members
If anyone has any particular thoughts about a shard online directory,
please let us know.
We appreciate any additional input as the Stuy96 Reunion effort
reorganizes itself for my memory making events in the future.
Keep in touch!
Hope you guys had a great time at the Reunion. By the sound of some responses and thank yous, interest is brewing for more gatherings sooner rather than later (i.e. Regional Stuy Alum Parties, Before '30' Reunion, the New Stuy's 15th Anniversary etc.). Stuy97 and Stuy98 heard about our awesome Reunion and has already been in touch about getting their 10 Year Reunion jump started. Suggestions were made to share contact info and we'll be sharing that in some form. Currently addresses could be searched in some form on the yahoogroups site at:
Could you imagine that the 10 Year Reunion came and went just like
that. It had been already been more than 10 years since we all
traveled through the hallowed halls of 345 Chambers Street. For those
of you that came in and visited the school before the reunion, we hope
that you all found it exciting to relive some memories.
But as far as Stuyvesant HS goes, the school was more than the building
and the teachers, but the student body. And that's what we hope you
all enjoyed. Seeing how we've all changed and matured to be more than
just students, but everyday people making this world work and enjoy
life for all that it has to offer. With over 275 people at the
reunion, we've proven that our Stuy96 class is a special one and that
we'll always share a bond that will make us stronger in the future.*
The Woolworth Tower Kitchen was great venue that we on the Committee
would like to thank Melissa Marrus for recommending and setting
up. Also, a special thanks to Cindy Lo for designing the
absolutely awesome postcard design that was sent out to everyone and Jennifer
Kim whose e-vite setup was also vital for our communication for
this age's party planning efforts. Thanks to Katie Schaaf, Shuvo
Dastidar, Amy Yu, Preeti Davidson, Quinn Raymond,
and countless others who've contributed oh so much to making this 10th
Year gathering such a success. Thanks to people like Mr. Frank,
our Faculty Speaker who came, Mr. Lonardo who donated the
remaining Seniors '96 T-shirts and keychains from the Indicator Office,
and others such as Ms. Yoon who could not make it but sent her
best regards.
But for now, we'll ask for one more thing, we are asking for any
digital pictures that you can share from the 10 Year Reunion.
If you have a link to where you have publicly shared them,
please contact me at Andy Woo, wooa@...
We'll share the photos with everyone in the class including those that
couldn't make it to the reunion. We'd greatly appreciate it!
As for now, we will not ever believe what the future holds for all of
us because more memories will be made. The business to reconnect us
all to what made us who we are today will continue and please send
suggestions of what can be planned or what we can do before the age
clock strikes. Preeti Davidson suggested Regional gatherings...Well
besides that, thanks to you all for dropping by and making the fun
last forever!
All the best,
Andy Woo

Hey all, summer is just about coming to a close and I still can't
believe how many more of you all I keep running into and reminding you
all that we cannot believe it's been almost 10 years since the first
class to spend all 4 years at the Stuyvesant HS on 345 Chambers Street
opened in the Fall of 1992.
We still expect to host a party for the Class of 1996 and all of our
friends. Date, Place and Time are still to be determined. A vote for
ideas will be coming soon. Our committee that already includes HanNa,
Amy, and others, will meet in September, time permitting, so e-mail me
if you have ideas, wanna help, or anything! A total revamping of the
website may also very well occur...so volunteers are requested....Stay
tuned, cause more memories will made along the way!

It's election season in New York City, for those of you wondering what
Quinn is up to...He's been working so hard sweating away leading the
campaign for Brian Kavanagh for City Council campaign in Lower
Manhattan, City Council District 2! We need all the help we could get.
People like Ken McCauley, Adam Chimera and yours truly will try to push
an awesome candidate to the top on the Tuesday, September 13 election.
Good Luck to Quinn and the rest of the team.
Or let him know of any friends who live on the East Side either between
East 35 Street and Houston Street or south of Houston Street along the
East River, and he'll check to see which ones are in the District.
Congratulations to all of you that got married, and to those headed off
to score more accomplishments from coast to coast, or ocean to ocean,
you all know who I'm referring to. We'll be here to represent! So good
luck and be well!

Here's some details about an upcoming event with the Mets throught the
Alumni Association:
<>The New York Mets vs. The Florida Marlins
Saturday, July 2nd, 2005, 1:20 pm
Picnic Area, Shea Stadium (Flushing, Queens)
>
Go to the http://www.shsaa.org
website for more details:
On July 2nd, Stuyvesant alumni, faculty, friends and family will spend
the day at Shea Stadium cheering New York’s finest National League
baseball team. The Mets will be hosting the Florida Marlins, and we
have reserved a portion of the picnic area for the game. (Note that the
actual start time of the game is 1:20 pm, though we advise that you
arrive at the gate at least 30 minutes early.)
There will be choices available for anyone interested in purchasing
food & beverage items. If you have special dietary requirements or
cannot eat "ballpark food", you have the option of bringing your own
food. Please note that due to security measures, the food needs to be
wrapped in a clear, see-through package for easy inspection.
So get ready to have lots of fun, meet fellow alums, and raise some
money for our beloved school. Start spreading the news. A summer
afternoon at Shea is a great opportunity to invite your younger fans to
a major league baseball game. The picnic area is equipped with
playground equipment too. Now, let’s play ball!!
For directions, and information on parking,
please visit the Mets’ website newyork.mets.mlb.com
and click on "Shea Stadium".
With the Super Bowl over one can see that 2005 is already "flying
away". It's February already...

Fortunately, NYC and the northeast has been dealing with our latest
Blizzard conditions this weekend. Here's some interesting upcoming
activities that many of our classmates have been promoting or
undertaking that many of us could join in the fun that I thought you
could all know about. These volunteer efforts and entertaining events
are ways we can all help make a difference. Check it out:
Professionals For Active Learning (PAL), help needed! From Joe Chow [joseph.chow@...]:
Help kids discover your profession!
Are you a professional looking to volunteer some of your time back to
the community? Professionals for Active Learning (PAL) is a
not-for-profit organization that connects students with professionals
in a workshop style environment. Our goal is to achieve a three-fold
win-win-win situation: to provide professionals a channel to
contribute back to the community, to supplement teachers with
science-related educational sessions, and to give students the
opportunity to explore different professions earlier on so that they
can make better-informed decisions and build confidence in themselves.
Last summer, PAL succeeded in running half a dozen workshops with
kids in Lower Manhattan in topics ranging from skeletal structure to
encryption coding. We plan to organize a number of sessions again
this spring but we will need your help. If you are a professional
looking for a chance to volunteer some time, please email us at PALDirectors@... and we will help you to help the teachers in
helping the kids.

Here’s what’s up!
A former Stuyvesant High School student of mine, Reed Baker, is
in a hip-hop / reggae band, and he’s having a major gig in Manhattan, Friday, January 28th 2005
at the Canal Room.
He called to invite me and near the end of the conversation he asked if
he could donate 15% of the door proceeds to a school for children with
autism, The New York Child Learning Institute--a stud and a
philanthropist!
I’d like to show him our appreciation for his thoughtful generosity and
bring as many friends as possible. I need your help. Can you come?
Help me, help you have a great time.
Cover is only $15.
Please let me know if you can round up a few friends to this fun,
hip-hop / reggae event or just bring yourself.

Happy frickin' new year!
From our friends at Etc: Jamil, Anne, Gene, Quinn and Chris
Etc... kicked off the 2005 season with an improv-a-looza on Friday,
1/14/05 at the Puffin Room. Etc... fanatics will recognize the venue
as the site of last year's eerily prescient show, Apocalypse! Book
One. We will entertain you with a variety of improv, monologues, and
our general earthly goodness. The Puffin Room is located at 435 Broome
Street between Broadway and Crosby. The show begins at 8pm.
The whole troupe would like to take this opportunity to announce that
we all categorically oppose tsunamis. Gene may have experimented when
he was younger, but he found out the hard way that tsunamis don’t solve
any problems. Etc… stands shoulder to shoulder, tooth to tooth, with
the rest of the world when we say, “Go Home, Tsunami. Your kind isn’t
wanted here.”
More than that, etc... is putting its money where its mouth is: Etc…
decided that all of the proceeds from the January 14th show will be
donated to tsunami relief. Admission will be a suggested donation of
$10. Please come along and bring friends.
Keep up with all the details at www.etc3dot.com While you're there
check out the latest work of the troupe on our new blog.
See you Friday! If we don't see you there, we will assume you don't
want to help orphans devastated by nature's fury and/or that you are
allergic to laughter.
I try not to send out mass e-mails but I'm sending this one
out because I'm trying to reach as many people as I can
quickly. It's also coming from my personal e-mail account and
not a Probini address because this e-mail comes from me
personally and not from The Probini Foundation.
I'm sure you've all heard at least a portion of what's
happened because of the tsunamis of the 26th and how the
situation in continuing different aspects worsens dailly. My
dad flew over to India and Bangladesh on the 31st. The
Probini Foundation right has now got projects in areas which
the news overlooks in that area of the world, like our
project at SriRamKathi Pranavananda Shishu BidyaNektan, that
is right there on the Bay of Bengal but because death and
devastation didn't come all at once...it's been overlooked
until now. I'm writing to ask for your assistance now that
there is something to alert you that this part of the world
needs help. Donations can me made directly on the website of
The Probini Foundation at www.probini.org.

CONTINUES RUNNING HARD AT AABR!
Our past Social Studies teacher, John Frank, Director of
Development/ P.R. of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind
and
Retarded (AABR) topped his NYC marathon time for the 3rd
straight
year in a row. Congratulations John!
Fellow Stuy96 alums Quinn Raymond, Diana Hui,

9. KIKI DEFENDS THE
RIGHT TO APPLY
We applaud Kiki Cummins and her efforts to help
not just her
own sister to be given certain the right to apply to Harvard based
limitations
and standards held by administrators. In the article which you can find
at: http://www.stuy96.com/101604apply.html
The quote from the article that stood was the
following: "The problem is bigger than
Kimberly," she said. "We want to make sure that other students like
her are not disadvantaged in the future."
Great job Kiki and we
wish you all
the best and your sister too!Too bad we
still remember those days of Ms. Katz and the College Office.
10. 4TH STUYVESANT
NOBEL LAUREATE 11.05.04
Congratulations to Dr. Richard Axel '63,
Stuyvesant's 4th
Nobel Prize Laureate, who was recently awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine, along with a former colleague, Linda Buck, for
clarifying how the olfactory system works. The work of Axel and Buck
has
provided understanding about how the nose is able to distinguish more
than
10,000 smells. The researchers discovered a gene pool of more than
1,000
different genes that encode olfactory receptors in the nose. This is
believed
to be the largest gene family in the human genome. Dr. Axel is
University
Professor, ColumbiaUniversity;
Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the College of
Physicians
& Surgeons, ColumbiaUniversityMedicalCenter;
Investigator, Kavli Institute for Brain Science at ColumbiaUniversity; and Member of
the
Center for Neurobiology and Behavior, ColumbiaUniversityMedicalCenter.
I hope one of you guys gets a chance to one day
reach this
kind of a milesone!
How are you all doing during the summer of 2004? Hope all is well.
Watching the Athens Olympics? Thinking of moving away from the
Republican National Convention?
I'm so glad to hear back from many of you about how things are and your
desire to help me outreach to the rest of the class and get the word
out about what we're all involved with. It's just too bad how much I
involve myself with things I really care about, and you all are one of
them especially being from New York and Stuy. Can you imagine I'm
actually helping to plan my college's Fifth Year Reunion! Wow, right!
Here's some great news from Gene Perelson about another etc prodcution
that we should definitely support. Wish I could've sent this message
earlier, but even AM New York did a profile of this show:

What do Pat Robertson, Reverend Sun Moon, and etc… all have in common?
They all believe the end of the world is nigh. Unlike other religious
extremists, however, etc… has turned its apocalyptic vision into a
comedic revelation. etc… (experimental troupe comedy) is proud to
present Apocalypse!: Book One .
In August 2004, America will be swamped with news of the forthcoming
elections. The media will spoon-feed sound bites from cardboard
candidates. Apocalypse! takes on the media circus as it will smack the
audience upside the head with a new take on the election when Jesus
Christ, an unassuming industrial carpenter from a key swing state,
announces his candidacy for president and takes on Dubya in a
winner-takes-all boxing match. Meanwhile, an unnamed fair and balanced
news network inadvertently sets off the Apocalypse when the Four
Horsemen appear on the O'Reilly Factor.
etc… is the antithesis of mainstream comedy. Saturday Night Live,
Everybody Loves Raymond, and Leno are lifeless and self-satisfied,
living off the fat of canned laughter and middling expectations.
Apocalypse! presents an alternative to insidious reality shows and
cookie cutter sitcoms. The show will be a maelstrom of sketches and
structured improvisation that will be the opposite of conventional
comedy: irreverent, topical and provocative.
etc… is loud, brash and confrontational. In a time when civil liberties
are under attack, the media is complacent and mainstream comedy is
lifeless, etc… 's voice is needed more than ever. In its 10 years etc…
has made a name in New York City for its challenging political humor
and incisive social commentary. Apocalypse! promises to be the troupe's
most provocative piece yet, and one of the most exciting theatrical
pieces of the summer.
Jessica Valenti, jessvalenti@..., sent a message about a new
project
she started with friends. In collaboration with three other women,
they've started a blog/website for young women, http://www.feministing.com
The manifesto reads:
Young women are rarely given the opportunity to speak on their own
behalf on issues that affect their lives and futures. Feministing
provides a platform for us to comment, analyze and influence.
It's going pretty well as of late; we've been mentioned on Air
America's Majority Report radio show as a notable blog, and we're
getting a lot of positive feedback. We're trying to get the word out,
so if you could send it around, it would be really helpful.
Help spread the word! Great work Jessica! Keep it up!

After dropping by Stuy for the annual College Fair, hearing and seeing so much about the Tribeca Film Festival and the Stuyvesant HS connection, I thought I had to pass along the 411 to you all. Check out this poster that has been on subways, billboards around town (especially Lower Manhattan), and a giant billboard on the school itself as seen going south downtown up top on West Street (you can't miss it if you look up):
It's still not too late to visit your alma mater tickets even to see the premiere of Kate Hudson's newest movice, hear Martin Scorcese in a film discussion, or other related events in the Murray Kahn Theater more famous for SING!
If you are interested in volunteering for the Festival this spring, please refer to the two PDF forms below: the Volunteer Information Sheet and Volunteer Application Form. Download each and read all the information carefully. Please fill out the Volunteer Application Form (you can type directly on the PDF), print the form, and send back via fax or regular mail.
Or even just have fun at the upcoming TFF events like the street fair on Saturday, May 8th.

Hope you're all doing well! Happy month of May, coincidentally Asian Pacific American Heritage Month...but we'll try our best to push awareness. Thanks for reading!
Spring is really in the air and I wanted to pass
along some requests for help from the Stuy Student Union for SING!
2004. Some of you have been sending me messages that I regret not
getting back to you sooner. But it's easiest if more of you got
involved with pushing Stuy like myself. I owe some of you all the
enthusiasm plus all 180+ of you on the Stuy NinetySix Friendster (which
has been running not very smoothly lately...Feel free to add
testimonials...) http://www.friendster.com/user.jsp?id=2740867
I'm still looking for volunteers to help plan
events, suggest ideas, or even help with the stuy96.com website which
needs changes.Talk to you soon.

a current student?

Friday, April 16th & Saturday, April 17th for $40. All proceeds
