Hi there! I am a student studying Speech-Language Pathology and I'm really
interested in the psychological aspects if stuttering. I have learned that
sometimes therapy is not effective for those who stutter, and these people
prefer to continue stuttering rather than use management techniques. I'm
interested in hearing first-hand experiences and opinions on this issue. If
anyone has any stories or can point me to some good ones I would really
appreciate it!! Thank you!!

The 12th International Stuttering Awareness Day online conference is now open
(and will continue through October 22). The FREELY AVAILABLE conference is
linked to the top of the Stuttering Home Page
(http://www.stutteringhomepage.com). Included on the conference page:

1. a place to post announcements about events that your group or you are doing
for International Stuttering Awareness Day.

2. a brochure (in either English or Chinese!) that can be downloaded with ideas
on how to celebrate International Stuttering Awareness Day (directly until the
flags on the conference site).

3. posters for ISAD in English, Traditional or Simplified Chinese, Portuguese,
Lithuanian, Swedish, Greek, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, or French that can
be run off (directly under the brochures links)

4. The conference itself has many interesting papers by both professionals and
people who stutter from around the world, written in a reader-friendly style.
Each paper has an easy-to-use threaded discussion where you can post questions
or comments to the author. You can practice how the threaded discussions work at
http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad12/testinginfo.html

5. There is also a section called The Prof Is In where 24 professionals have
agreed to respond to questions about stuttering from people who stutter
(including children - an 11 year old has already posted), their
friends/families, or clinicians who work with people who stutter.

The conference is freely available to everyone, it is also available for 1.5
CEUs (15 hours) or 1 credit for a fee. Information about requirements and how to
register is online at
http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/isadarchive/requirements.html

Hello, Dawn if you are still needing some assistance with this I'd be more than
willing. I am currently 21 years old. I have stuttered since I was 5, and have
been working full time ever since out of highschool. Let me know if you'd want
to get a few answers from me.

Thanks,
Kyle.

Dear Members,

I am a third year university student studying speech and language therapy. I
have an interest in stammering and hope to specialise in this area once
qualified. As part of my degree I am conducting a research project looking at
the "attitudes and feelings of people who stammer regarding their experiences in
the workplace".

I am looking for people who are currently working or have worked in the past to
complete a short questionnaire to help me with my research. All of the
information will be confidential and the questionnaire shall only be used for
the purpose of this investigation. Your answers given will only be read by me
and a university tutor. If you are interested in volunteering or would just like
more information please email me at dawn_tomalin@ hotmail.co. uk and I will send
you an extra participant information sheet.

Many thanks

Dear stutteringhp members,

My name's Brian and I'm a senior psychology student at Haverford College
currently conducting my thesis work. I and a fellow student are looking
into language processing in people who stutter, and would love it if
anyone here would volunteer to help us collect data for our paper. We
are offering 40 dollars for an hour of your time.

We've created a webpage that answers some basic questions about the
study, including some rationale and participation details, which can be
found here:
http://www.haverford.edu/psych/speechstudy.html

Some basic details:
- You must be an adult who stutters (over 18) in or around Philadelphia
- There is an online screening questionnaire you will fill out to
determine your eligibility
- Participation will take about 1 hour, for which you will be
compensated $40
- If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please
contact us at hc-comptonlab@...

We are very serious about participant confidentiality, which is why each
participant will be assigned a code number so that your identity is
protected from the very beginning of the study. We would be excited to
have you participate, as the kind of research we are doing will
contribute to scientific knowledge about the condition of stuttering and
will help scientists and people who stutter in the future.

Our project is being supervised by Dr. Rebecca Compton of Haverfod
College and assisted by Dr. Jennifer Kleinow of La Salle University.

Any questions? Feel free to email us at hc-comptonlab@....
Thanks!

Dear friends,

As some of you may know I started the stutteringselfhelp yahoo group
to fill a 'gap' in the Internet Stuttering Community. In my work in
the ISA I realised there was not much information available worldwide
on Selfhelp groups. So on behalf of the ISA I started the group.

In my work in the ISA, I have many people from around the world,
especially in India, emailing me asking for help. Because of my
position in the ISA and BSA I have usually just pointed them to
various appropriate websites and groups. So I became aware of the
limitations of my help. I have decided to address that.

I have started my own website http:/ /keithskeys.c om/. (N.B. remove
the spaces). It includes a blog as well. I intend to offer information
on what changed me from an experienced person with a history of
stammering to an experienced communicator who has learned about many
useful keys to successful self improvement.

You may browse the keys, select and discard based on your values. What
ever you do is OK.

I look forward to meeting you there.

Take care,

Keith

Hello All,
I am glad to make the announcement:

The BRITISH STAMMERING ASSOCIATION (BSA) is 30 years old and to
celebrate this very special event we are organising a lunch party cum
disco for members and non-member PWS, family and friends in London on
Sunday, 7th Decemember 2008.

There will be a Reception from 12 noon to 1.30-2 pm, after which lunch
will be served. Rob Day, BSA trustee and resident DJ, will be providing
the music - and our members, family and friends will, no doubt, do the
rest! There will be afternoon tea and a celebration cake at about 6.30
pm. Dancing goes on till 11 pm. Even if you are not a member, you are
still welcome.

More information is available in the BSA website:
http://www.stammering.org/events_gala.html
<http://www.stammering.org/events_gala.html>

So if you can come to London, it would be great to come to this event
and meet other PWS and have a enjoyable day.

regards
Tanveer

There are about 20 professionals on the online conference that is open right now
who are answering questions like this one. You might want to open the ISAD
online conference attached to the top of http://www.stutteringhomepage.com

Open the link to the online conference near the top of that page and scroll down
to "The Prof is In." Post your question and see if you can get an answer there.
There are also many excellent papers on the conference that you might find
interesting.

The conference is free, and open until October 22. All the papers will be there
after October 22 but the threaded discussions where you can post questions and
comments will be closed after that date.

WHat I'd suggest is you post the following (or if you have trouble doing that, I
would be happy to post it for you):

Vaibhav Sharma

Hi,
hi, I am a fourth year university student studying speech and
language therapy. I have an interest in stammering and as part of
my degree I am conducting a research project looking at the
difficulties faced by young people who stammer and their parents. I
hope that this project will inform the speech and language therapy
service as to what can be done to improve the service provided to
help people with a stammer. You do not have to have had speech
therapy to participate.

I am looking for both parents of adolescents who stammer and
adolescents aged 11 to 19 who stammer themselves to complete a short
questionnaire to help me with my research. All of the information
will be confidential and no identifying information will be
included. If you are interested in volunteering or would just like
more information please message me and I will contact you.

Many thanks

You are most welcome. The author of a new book has written an article for the
ISAD online conference this year. In fact, there are actually two books that you
might be interested in, or in posting a question to the authors.

The online conference is linked to the top of
http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad11/isadcon11.html

The authors are Fusco and Gasway. The threaded discussion attached to their
papers make it possible for you to post questions/comments before October 22
when the online conference ends. It is freely available. There are also MANY
other interesting papers there as well.

Best wishes,

Judy

Thankyou so much Judith you have more than answered my request and
provided a wealth of informative links, so thankyou again and I so
wish I'd asked here before as I now see there are so many characters
in contemporary literature with stammering issues. I feel truely
indebted and ever so grateful , thankyou again, ShontelleiyaSherree

For several books that portray stuttering. Kenneth Logan also recently published
an article on childrens' books that portray stuttering. Maybe a search on
scholar.google.com will turn up the reference for you.

Hi,
hi, I am a fourth year university student studying speech and
language therapy.

Many thanks

The eleventh annual International Stuttering Online Conference opens October
1 (it is October 1 somewhere in the world now;-) and climaxes on October
22nd, "International Stuttering Awareness Day." The theme of this year's
conference is "Don't Be Afraid of Stuttering."

Individuals interested in stuttering, professional therapists as well as
children and adults who stutter and their support persons, will discuss
stuttering in one of the largest professional conferences of the year. But
not face-to-face -- this conference is on the Internet. It is freely
available, or for those that would like credit, it is also available for 15
hours of continuing education or 1 college credit for a fee. (For those
interested in CEUs or credit, information is available through a link at the
top of The Stuttering Home Page -- http://www.stutteringhomepage.com or
contact carol.myhre@...).

Presentations, by consumers and professionals are posted for reading on the
web site. Presentations are designed for a general audience, and feedback
and discussion is invited through an Internet bulletin board (threaded
discussion). This year's conference also has special features designed
especially for young people who stutter, a section called "The Prof is In"
where consumers and clinicians can post questions to a panel of experts,
several "clinical nuggets" especially for clinicians, and an interesting
variety of papers from both professionals and consumers from around the
world.

Past conferences have drawn participation from 148 different countries
around the world.

The 2008 Conference can be found linked to the top of the Stuttering Home
Page at http://www.stutteringhomepage.com .

Please show your support to the people who stutter and to the professional
community that have devoted many hours to prepare papers and will respond to
your comments/questions.

If you post a question or comment to a paper:
1. open the link to Questions and comments
2. hit Post at the top of the page that opens
3. write your name and subject in the appropriate spaces
4. type your question or comment
5. hit Post Article beneath the comments section

Trust the system. If you have done it correctly, the post is there, whether
you see it or not. If you are using aol or another system that "caches" the
entire site, your post may not be visible until the next day when they
refresh their cache.

Thanks for your support and interest,

Judy Kuster

Ive come to that point in my life where im not bothered about my
stutter anymore .
its took some tears and that but im going to enjoy my life ,im going
to go to the shop and ask for something, im going to use the phone
and use it, im going to ask for directions ,ill even make
conversation in the street with some stranger,
Im not going to sit at home thinking how im going to present myself .
Ive given up trying to not stutter and hide the fact i do stutter ,
There are people well worse off then us lot ,we all need to smell the
coffe ?
I remember where id be very frightened about anyone coming into a
room and i had to talk to them ,i act very confident now and still
stutter a bit .
I went on the maguire course a few years back but at the time i was
using drugs and beer ,im not ashamed to say it was a total disaster
because .
Id advise anyone who wants to go into therapy like the maguire course
or any other is to not use drugs (ILLEGAL DRUGS )Im quite ashamed to
say but you will never make progress being off your head .
Why waste all that money when your going to come off it and be in the
same boat as before ?
I wish i had never used drugs but with how society is today its easy
to fall into a trap ,listen to me they will make your life a misery
and you,ll never make any progress with your speech while you use
drugs ?
Im not saying people use drugs on here im just warning you that its
not worth it .
Im fighting back and yes its a hard struggle moving away from losers
who use them and yes i was a loser but ill win this battle .
Johnny ashton who has stopped using illegal drugs to find a better
fluency .
Its changed my life anyway
Take care
