Meet the Makers

 Dear Spec,

It is an achievement just making a feature, but doing it for £3,000 is particularly impressive. Doing it as a writer/director/photographer and turning 18 on the first day of the shoot is surely the sign of a fantastic film-maker announcing his presence.  Rob Savage’s Strings is refreshingly honest and painfully raw account of teenage romance.  The story follows four young people and their romantic endeavours in that blissful summer before they leave home to go to university. Grace (Philine Lembeck) is a visiting German student, soon to return home. She falls for the quiet, distant Jon (played by an excellent Oliver Malam), whilst her best friend Scout (Hannah Wilder) becomes entangled in an increasingly violent relationship with her long-term boyfriend Chris (Akbar Ali).

The four lead actors rise to the challenge of portraying the confusion of teenage romance. Credit to Mr Savage for reining in their performances to create a muted, nuanced piece. Everything from the sparse use of sound, the interspersed smatterings of German, and the lighting create an almost haunting effect, drawing you in and immersing you in the story. Rob Savage, surely a talent for the future, will attend the screening.

You might also be interested in seeing Shell - with director Scott Graham attending the screening.

Enjoy the Festival!

Rory Bonass,

Industry Co-ordinator

The landscapes evoke a feeling of solitude; the tree, the arch, the shoot stand alone.
They are made by building layers of randomly made marks, paper collage and washes of pigment.

As the work progresses the choices become less random and more deliberate so that a certain order and balance is reached between the structured/organic and the incidental.

I am interested in the idea of containment and within that the potential for growth.
The work's progress seeks to address the polarities of expansion and confinement (within a fixed picture frame), where a surface tension exists between the object and it's containing space.

Claire Muckian

With this series of work, I am interested in the condition between object and image.  An extension of previous explorations with surface value, the sculptural work consists of highly seductive ceramic surfaces.
These surfaces are transposed and re-presented into simple two-dimensional constructions opening up the possibilities of surface - surface as image.  Simply put, the original is reinterpreted in much the same way a piece of music is remixed or a film is projected onto a wall.  I am interested to investigate the specific material conditions where the subject is transposed into another mode, and in doing so, what can be learned about materiality, modes of production and viewer response.

Running alongside this work is the notion of platform.  Informed in part by Hemmingway's short story 'Hills Like White Elephants', the work engages with the notion of flat sparseness and platform as a motif full of anticipation and possibility.

News broke last night that The Big Bang Comic Shop in Dundrum town centre, that following author Orson Scott Card’s comments attributed to him relating to his views on gay marriage that the shop will not be stocking his upcoming title the Adventures of Superman from DC.
In a statement released last night the shop said that “This isn’t a knee jerk reaction from us and it’s something we’ve discussed long and hard. But the fact remains that for us, no matter how talented a writer like Orson Scott Card is, he actively goes about trying to prevent people from their right of marrying the person they want to marry. His involvement in the National Organization for Marriage and his extreme opposition to gay Marriage and gay rights are not something we support. Especially considering the fact that we have both customers and friends of all orientations. Thus, we won’t be carrying the book for the duration of Mr Cards involvement on our shelves.â€
In the statement the shop did acknowledge two ironies in the situation; “Ironically in all of this it’s a Superman story. And Superman stands for Truth and Justice. I’m pretty sure Superman, if he were a real living breathing person wouldn’t be into restricting the rights of any person no matter what their sexual orientation was but Mr Card is and that doesn’t represent the principles of Truth and Justice to us. The second irony in all of this, if we were to boycott the title all together we’d be no better than Mr Card restricting people’s right to get this issue if they so wanted to. We’re not about censoring rights, unlike Mr Card.â€
The shop sent its apologies to the other creative talent on the book saying “Our sincerest apologies go out to all the other talent involved in this book, in particular Jeff Parker that you all had the pleasure to meet at D.I.C.E. ’12.â€
The book will be made available to customers who pre-order the title by March 16th at the latest and no other copies will be made available outside of this in the store.
Adventures of Superman is a digital first book that goes on print sale on May 29th.
News broke on IGN.com a couple of weeks ago that Card would be contributing the first two chapters of the digital first story along with Aaron Johnston, Chris Sprouse and Karl Story, the third by Jeff Parker and Chris Samnee; telling the story of Superman’s first meeting with Lex Luthor. Eye brows were raised in some circles at the move to hire Card considering that he is on board of directors for National Organization for Marriage, an association committed to stopping the legalisation of gay marraige. Card has been the recipient of a number of boycotts following statements contributed to him on his views on homosexuality and gay marraige.
When news of the hirespread to other outlets last week DC Comics were prompted into making a statement that appeared on bleedingcool.com that read:
“As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.â€

A year ago this month the first issue of the Lightning Strike Presents anthology book was launched at the London Super Con followed by a wider release in Ireland shortly afterwards. Almost universally acclaimed as a success, it has seemed like a long twelve months as we awaited the second instalment which is due to be released at this years London Super Con at the end of February. Having set a high bar that it would do well to replicate, the second issue has a lot to live up to.
The book let loose with a statement of intent with the opening strip ‘A Clockwork Universe’ written by Ciaran Marcantonio and art by Cormac Hughes. Channelling some fine exposition this thoroughly entertaining second chapter of the tale was superb. The narrative was very tight and met all necessary story beats that as the story was being moved forward you found yourself entrenched while Hughes on art was on top form. There were some fine panel layouts and the old arid western style in the art was pulled off with ease. This was a strip that upped its game from issue one and that first strip was no slouch.
‘Apocalypse Whispers’ from Scarlett Hopper and Peter Mason was a post apocalyptic tale that displays the power of word of mouth with a man and his dog and the variations that they take on in reputation passed on from person to person. A smart story with some nice smooth pencils from Mason.
‘Bloodless’ penned by Richard Evans and exceptional line work from Rob Carey is a tense thriller of a story that is fast paced and oh so beautiful to look at. The addition of bows and arrows to a modern hostage situation added a cool additional visual that further enhanced this tales ‘bad ass’ factor.
Liam Browne and Daryl Cox’s ‘Monkey of Oz’ continued the strong opening from issue one where we see a leaderless bunch of soldiers cross paths with our hero monkey. What shines through in the narrative is that of the sense of what’s right and fair that the monkey displays in saving a woman from a cruel outcome at the hands of the soldiers. There are some good kinetic action shots from Cox that are worth a mention also featuring a standoff between the monkey and some wolves.
Pete Hernandez was a stand out creator of the opening book so I was looking forward to ‘Villainous’, his strip in this issue with art by Graeme Howard. The story takes place on a sub way train and this opening short was an action filled with a protagonist who seems like he could carry a book on his own. Graeme Howard’s art channels Michael Lark in part and it is a perfect match for the tone of the story. Great all round strip.
The first ‘Nightmare Scenario’ was a total creep fest in which the art and story combined to leave you quite disturbed, the second issue however played with your sanity and the total mind warping story harked back and funnelled the halcyon hey days of chemically induced comix. Though I did love the appearances of Abandoned Comics Nestor in the background of several panels.
The Stephen Carey penned ‘Relos’ was a cool mix of creatures of myth and magic and Monty Borror’s art displayed great structure to give us a story with graphic gore  but with a tragic ending that brought a surprisingly heart wrenching ending to the strip.
Richmond Clements ‘Brian Boru’ with art by Cormac Hughes continued the story from issue one and didn’t let up with the enjoyment factor. Clements story deals with Brian repelling a Nordic invasion and bracing himself for their revenge with Hughes contributing a brutal interpretation of close hand combat that was superb.
Stephen Carey and Rob Carey’s ‘Reality Watch’ rounds off the strips in this issue and like last issue Peter Mason’s colours compliment Rob’s pencils well. We see the story here told retroactively and it is paced wonderfully with the tale tying up any loose threads to wrap the issue nicely.
Lightning Strike have obviously learnt from their experiences from the first issue and have produced a fantastic anthology that should have no problems retaining their readership from a year ago and pulling in new readers. Some of the very best of today’s indy talent is on show in an book jam packed with something for everyone.
Also this issue coincides with the release of a variant cover and new logo from Lightning strike which you can see below and the news that  Eoin McAuley, Founding Publisher of Lightning Strike Comics has been awarded the Trinity Entrepreneurship Award 2013.

*PRESS RELEASE*
NB cover
New Titan Comics imprint releases **Numbercruncher**, a creator-owned series by writer Si Spurrier (X-Men: Legacy, Crossed: Wish You Were Here) and artist P.J. Holden (2000AD), colored by Jordie Bellaire (**Captain Marvel, Rocketeer, The Manhattan Projects**).
Titan Comics is pleased to announce the launch of *Numbercrucher*, a creator-owned series by writer Si Spurrier and artist P.J.
Holden*.*Hitting stores on July 10, 2013, *Numbercruncher* is an off-the-wall romance mixing time-travel,
life-after-death and coal-black comedy.
Si Spurrier is a novelist, comic book writer and former BBC art director whose career has often intertwined with flagship British sci-fi comic *
2000AD* and its spin-off, *Judge Dredd Megazine*, whether penning the tales of its flagship character, or co-creating such unique and disturbed characters as Lobster Random and *The Simping Detective*.
Currently writing the electric super-psychological adventure *X-Men: Legacy*for Marvel NOW!, Spurrier has also penned adventures of
*Wolverine*, *Ghost Rider* and *Punisher*.
Spurrier is the writer of two critically-acclaimed post-pulp occult crime novels, *Contract* and *A Serpent Uncoiled*, both from Hodder Headline.
Co-creator and artist P.J. Holden, also an acclaimed regular on *2000AD*and *Judge Dredd Megazine*, crafting stories of *Judge Dredd*, *Rogue Trooper*, *Johnny Woo* and *The 86ers*. Holden broke into US comics with *Fearless*, from Image Comics. A digital comics pioneer, he designed the ‘Comics Reader App’ in 2009, which was licensed by NBC for its similarly pioneering *Heroes *webcomics*.
Utterly unusual, vaguely insane, and unexpectedly heart-warming,*Numbercruncher * follows a brilliant Mathematician who dies young, enters the afterlife and discovers a way to cheat the terrifying Divine Calculator. He schemes to be endlessly reincarnated within the lifespan of the woman he loves, no matter how often the violent bailiffs of the Karmic Accountancy cut short each life. It falls to one such bailiff – the surly Bastard Zane – to put a stop to the time-twisting romance once and for all, before the Mathematician can pull-off his greatest trick and escape Existential Justice forever!
“When Si first proposed *Numbercruncher* to me, it was clear we’d need to play with some different techniques for this multi-layered, multi-reality story; flipping between the afterlife and the real world was a key element, and we needed something to make those realities distinct. And, being a huge fan of the Pressburger and Powell film “A Matter of Life and Death†(a romance about a dying World War II pilot, which similarly flits between a monochromatic afterlife and a technicolour real world), it seemed fairly obvious that the best way to do that was to have the afterlife be a sort of dreamy, textured b&w world, and the real world a much more comic book style, pure lineart with color. And, when Zane moves from the afterlife to the real world, crashing that b&w into the color, visually it would be show-stopping, and look like nothing else out there,†says P.J. Holden, co-creator.
â€PJ and I worked our socks off on *Numbercruncher *– a time-travelling romantic comedy thriller with more twists than Agatha Christie’s corkscrew – so it’s enormously satisfying to see it published by such a prestigious institution as Titan, and hugely exciting that it’s part of their new all-original-content initiativeâ€, says Si Spurrier, co-creator.
â€*Numbercruncher* is one of those intensely personal yet universally brilliant projects you just can’t wait to get into printâ€, says Steve
White, Senior Comics Editor. “Si is a master of the wonderfully off beat idea, and PJ has illustrated it to perfection. The new, subtle, and emotive
colors by colorist, Jordie Bellaire help round off the Titan package. This is a title that’s flown under the radars of a lot of readers in the US, so
it’ll be great to finally get it into their hands.â€
*Numbercruncher* was originally serialized in black white in Judge Dredd Megazine in the UK. The series is now being newly colored and
expanded for the first time by Titan Comics.
*Numbercruncher* #1 will hit comic stores on July 10, 2013. The series will also be available to read day and date on the iPad, iPhone, Web, Android and Kindle Fire, exclusively through the comiXology app and comiXology.comhttp://www.comixology.com/>
Retailers can order *Numbercruncher* #1 from the March 2013 edition of Diamond PREVIEWS.

GET THE BLESSING play The Limelight2 as they continue to elbow their way out of easy categorisation.
The four-piece have deftly ploughed their craft since the release of their debut All Is Yes back in 2008, drawing enthusiastic comparisons to similarly inventive acts like Tortoise and Polar Bear.
A shared love of legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman's early quartet inspired their boldly monophonic instrumentation. The intricate but rock-solid rhythm section forms the glue that holds Get The Blessing together, with the dual sax and trumpet frontline working with the bass to create melodies and harmonies.
Get The Blessing hold multiple influences and comparisons with punk aren't too far-fetched, from the band's often thrashing rhythms and rocking riffs to their irreverent and mischievous attitude.
Drummer Clive Deamer and bassist Jim Barr have long provided the low-end rumbles and stuttering beats for trip-hop legends Portishead. Deamer has recently been summoned by none other than Radiohead IN 2012 (he's also an established partner of Robert Plant, Roni Size, Hawkwind, Jeff Beck and several other contemporary luminaries). Not that the rest of the band are worried. "They are borrowing Clive in the hope that it will make them sound like Get The Blessing," says Barr with a smile; "No chance!"

“This is the kind of band who makes jazz fans out of people who don't expect to be.† - The Guardian
“…the band’s cool, stylish heat is irresistible.†- The Telegraph

Dear Mr Orb,

Welcome to the ‘Last Chance Saloon’ – there are only five days left to book your tickets to the Ulster Orchestra’s Western Film Night in the Belfast Waterfront this Saturday.

The Wild Wild West is sponsored by United Airlines and conducted by one of the great film and television composers of the day, Carl Davis. He leads the Orchestra on a trek to the American frontier with music from The Big Country, High Noon, Shane, The Magnificent Seven and much, much more.

So saddle-up and get down to the Waterfront on Saturday with the UO and presenter Joe Lindsay as they recapture the good ‘ol days of the Wild West.

NEWS

City (Re)Searches starts tomorrow… time to pop up and participate!

Wednesday marks the start of our international public arts inquiry, City (Re)Searches. The four day extravaganza will not only bring award-winning artists and activists from the Netherlands, USA, Brazil, Lithuania, Germany, UK and Ireland together with local community leaders, artists, funders and activists, but also give local people the chance to have their say. For more information on each session including agendas, visit our City (Re)Searches page.

We hope that participants from all backgrounds in Belfast will look at the timely local question – what makes culture important and valued?  we are also hoping that many voices will be heard over the four days, with each day offering an opportunity for different key players in the arts to take up the discussion, from community artists and activists, to policy makers and statutory agencies. read more...

I only missed one weeks mail out and Andy Warhol opened at The MAC and the pope
resigned. However I do not think they are linked.Great to see the MAC being so
busy with the exhibition it looks like we are finally getting another all
purpose Art Gallery working in the city, the MAC reported over 5000 people
visiting in the first weekend I know I've been at numerious times and there has
always been a great energy about the place be it Friday evening or the now very
busy Sundays. It's interesting to think what was going on in the 60's in New
York and considering what was going on in the 60's in Northern Ireland. Anyone
who has been art educted at all comes across Andy Warhol at sometime in their
art education, you can see with his screenprints in particular the influence he
has had on printmaking and is probably still the reason that in any Print
workshop screenprinting is always the course that fills up first.  I love the
room with silver clouds, I watched two young children play with them for about
twenty minutes the women next to me on the seat in the gallery said " you would
not believe you were in Belfast would you" nice to see the different mix of
people in the galler,y long may it continue.

Onto the reason I was so busy last week  I've been busy working on the Backin
Belfast campaign, it's been running for a couple of weeks now and artists from
creativechangeni.com have been bringing their Art to the streets of Belfast and
giving something away for free. This so far has incluced
sculpture, drawings, performance Art paintings, portraits and  it's been quite an
experience for all the artists concerned.Anyone who has travelled will recognise
that artists are often seen out in the streets working so why not Belfast?
Locations so far have included Victoria square, Arthur Square, Royal Aveune,
Blackstaff square and the City Hall. Reactions have been interesting when you
ask the general pubic would you like some free art from a straight "no" to a
frenzy of excitment and long Q's. It's lovely to see the general public are not
so tainted with seeing people on the street that they avoid you. Out of interest
I have been asking people do they visit any galleries? mostly they say no. We
tell them it's free and where they are to great excitment. There is something
quite lovely of taking the Art to the audience rather than expecting them to
come to find you. We are continuing on this weekend with a majority of Women
artist's as Internatonal Women's Day is coming up locations so far are
Blackstaff square (behind Robinsons) 5-8pm on Friday , Arthur Square 1-4pm on
Saturday and Royal Aveune 1-4pm on Sunday artists include: Red apple Arts ,
Deirdre McKenna, Catherine Davidson, Jayne Cherry, Helen Paisley and myself.
This weekend we will have painting, drawing, performance Art and a combination
of all three ;-). This may continue on following weekends.

We also bumped into Trisha McNally and Shauna McGowan who were out asking people
what they love about Belfast the result are going into an exhibition to be held
in the City hall you might be able to catch them about the city this weekend
with their love hearts. I have to say there was a lovely atmopshere among people
out supporting Belfast during this time of shifting and a real appreciation of
Artists joining in with helping making the city a more congenial place to be, do
come down and see everybody ;-)

There are a number of exhibitions coming to an end for the next few weeks:

Lunchtime Readings
Ken Bruen
Friday, February 22nd - 1.00pm

It is our great pleasure to kick off the Lunchtime Readings with a reading by the enormously prolific, and celebrated author of crime-noir fiction Ken Bruen. He is the author of the award-winning Jack Taylor series which has been recently adapted for a series of TV movies. His novel Blitz was also adapted for the screen in 2011 starring Jason Statham, Aidan Gillen and Paddy Considine. In 2010, London Boulevard was turned into a film starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley.

Ken's White Trilogy has recently been published and he has two more books on the way in 2013.

Rosemarie Rowley
In association with Poetry Ireland. Friday, March 1st - 1.00pm

Rosemarie Rowley will be the first poet of the Lunchtime Readings. In her work as a poet and essayist, she is a pioneering voice in the fields of ecology and women's issues - The Sea of Affliction (1987), being one of the first works in eco-feminism. To date Rosemary has published five collections and is the four time winner of the Epic award in the Scottish International Poetry Competition. Her most recent books are Hot Cinquefoil Star (2002) and In Memory of Her (2004) and (2008) both published by Rowan Tree Press, Dublin.

Selina Guinness
Friday, March 8th - 1.00pm

It is our great pleasure to invite you to a reading by the critically acclaimed Selina Guinness. Her memoir The Crocodile by the Door, her first novel, recounts the trials and tribulations of farming valuable land on the edge of Dublin at the height of the property boom. Published in 2012 by Penguin it has received widespread critical acclaim and was shortlisted for both the 2012 Costa biography award and the Sunday Independent Newcomer of the Year. Selina has also edited an anthology of Irish poetry published by Bloodaxe, The New Irish Poets.

Kathy D'Arcy
In association with Poetry Ireland. Friday, March 15th - 1.00pm

Kathy D'Arcy is writer in residence with Cork literary organisation Tigh Fili (Poets' House).  Her first collection, Encounter, was published by Lapwing Publications in 2010, and a second, The Wild Pupil, was published by Bradshaw Books in 2012.  She currently studies and teaches Irish women's literature, runs writing workshops (www.kathydarcy.com) and works with homeless teenagers, but she originally qualified and worked as a doctor.  She is also a playwright; her plays 'Retreat' and 'This is my Constitution' have been staged in Cork, and the latter appeared recently at a Dail Eireann briefing on constitutional change.  This year she was awarded an Arts Council Literature Bursary to develop her third collection.

David Park
Friday, March 22nd - 1.00pm

David Park will be one of the acclaimed writers performing at the Lunchtime Readings. His current novel The Light of Amsterdam was shortlisted for Eason Novel of the Year at the 2012 Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards. Of this novel, Steve Davies of The Guardian has said "...the humanity of Park's writing is such that even at the most prosaic of moments, unique insights quiver into life."
His novel The Truth Commissioner, which has been described by Joseph O' Connor as yielding "moments of heart-shivering beauty", was awarded the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Prize. He has also received the American Ireland Literary Fund Award and a Major Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. David Park has written one collection of short stories and seven novels.
Eugene O'Connell
In association with Poetry Ireland. Friday, April 5th - 1.00pm

Eugene O'Connell was born near Kiskeam in northwest Cork in 1951. He has published a number of chapbooks, one full collection of poems, One Clear Call (Bradshaw Books, 2003), and one book of translations, Flying Blind (Southword Editions), which was volume 12 of the Cork European City of Culture Translation Series. Diviner, a new collection of his poems, was published by Three Spires Press in 2009. He is editor of The Cork Literary Review.
Donal Ryan
Friday, April 12th - 1.00pm

Come along to a special reading by award-winning author Donal Ryan. Donal's first novel, The Spinning Heart, co-published by The Lilliput Press and Doubleday Ireland, won both Newcomer of the Year and the overall Book of the Year at the Bord Gais Irish Book Awards 2012. Declan Hughes has praised The Spinning Heart, saying "Sometimes people say, having praised a debut novel, that they look forward to what the writer does next, as if there is always room for improvement. Given a novel as brilliantly realised as The Spinning Heart, I see no reason to look anywhere but the present. For Donal Ryan, the future is now." (The Independent). John Boland has also praised the book, describing it as a " savagely funny, vision of a rural Ireland" that is "up-to-date in its concerns"(The Independent).

His second, The Thing About December, will be published in September 2013.

Gerry Murphy
In association with Poetry Ireland. Friday, April 19th - 1.00pm

Gerry Murphy was born in Cork in 1952. He has published seven collections of poetry, including End of Part One: New and Selected Poems (2006) and My Flirtation with International Socialism (2010). In 2008 his work was adapted for actors and musicians by Crazy Dog Audio Theatre as The People's Republic of Gerry Murphy. He also published a volume of versions of the Polish poet Katarzyna Borun-Jagodzinska (2005).
