Hi,

Yesterday i made the figure "Pigeon's house".
A karaja string figure (BISFA 9 p184))

This figure reminded me another figure.
"The fish trap" renamed by Mark as a "Megaphone".
http://www.isfa.org/sfmv3n4.htm

Indeed almost the same figure.
Only the beginning differs, and the fingers used.

Two strings around the cone for the first figure,
and only one for the second figure.

In the article "Reru: Karaja string figures" by Chang Whan,
almost all the figures are variations of another figure.

What is so attractive in string figures is the fact you can
invent, re invent a figure or do a variation.

Enjoy string figures!
Myriam

Hi,

If you want to make a change in a string figure, you can alterat the opening or
loom.

In the second part of James's method, you need to alterat "Ten Men"
http://www.torusflex.com/torusflex%20project1/pdfs/murph5_1.pdf

I decided not to hook up L5f with R2, but to hook up R5n with L2.
Here after doing the other movements, you got a new loom.

You make the first weaving and the resetting of the loom.
But in the second weaving 1 passes under all the strings and picks up 5f.
Don't finish the weave.

Don't extend like usually.
Release 5, then 1 loop gently.

345 enter from below (toward you) into the both loops 2.
Extend like you can. 1 removes from above (away from you)  2345 loops.
2345 remove from below (toward you) 1 loops.

Extend with 2 up and 345 hooked down
and arrange with 1 (1 enters away from you into the door and push the walls).
You get what my younger son called: an inflated tent.

What i love in this figure is the half circle.
You can model the half circle string to get another form.

After making this figure, i thought perhaps i can do
a continuation.

You have the door of the tent with the double walls.
Pass the double strings hold by 2345 under the closest string (wall)
with the help of 1.
(you can put down the figure).

And extend with 2 pointed up and 345 hooked down. Arrange.
You got a man holding proudly his child.

I hope i explained well, if not i can do a video.

Enjoy string figures and ISFA,
Myriam

Hello,

Everybody knows the figure "Fish Spear".

I think that a good figure for beginners is a figure following
by an another figure, in a few mouvments.

In BISFA9 p203, there is an interesting article by David Nicolai
"Yup'ik String Figures".

The second figure is "A Fish":

Do Fish Spear.
Rotate R2 a full turn toward  you.
Exchange 2 loops (L loop through R loop)
Release L2.
R345 hook down R2f.
Extend and arrange.

When i'll show this figure to kids i'm sure they will rotate R2
for the figure "Fish Spear", more than three times to do a longer sword.
Yes it is like a swordfish.
But i didn't think there are swordfish in Alaska.

You can make another figures:

L2 picks up L1n, entering toward you at the top of the figure
between the head and the tail
Release L1.
You have a butterfly.

Then
L1 hooks up L5f, entering away from you at the bottom of the figure
between the head and the tail.
Release L5.
Extend with the L hand above the R hand.
You have a lift (elevator).
Ask someone to pull the horizontal string (the base of the triangle).
You can pull also with R1.
Release and the lift will return upward.

You can also pull the vertical string of the fish's tail
wth R3, to move the fish.

Perhaps do you know another continuations of the "Fish Spear"?

Enjoy
Myriam

Hello everyone

after a lot of work, I'm proud to announce one italian web site on string
figures, the Gadan Rock String Figures
(http://www.gadan.it/strings/strindex.html); well, this is only one sub-section
of our climbing group web site, but I think it will grow... slowly... Since in
my spare time I do also DJing on a local radio station...
http://utenti.lycos.it/deepspace/ I put an experimental soundtrack on the string
video; that's the reason of the name Rock (another reason for the name is that
since we are climbers, we climb rocks. :o)) ). the other name, Gadan, is the
name of the group of climbers...
I hope you'll find it intersting, even thou it is not "professional" and the
video is done with my cell phone. Any comment of course is welcome and last but
not least, many thanks to Myriam Namolaru for their useful suggestions.

enjoy

ciao

Gianni.

Thank you, Gianni, for your string figures. I'm glad there are videos
since I don't read Italian! I haven't had a chance to look at all of
them yet but I will. I really like the Apache Door variations. But
there aren't any pictures on that page and video number 7 doesn't
work, either.

I am a school librarian and I share string figures with my students. I
have some new pictures of them on our school website at
http://www.davenportschools.org/harrison/strings.htm
. I will soon be putting some more pictures there.

Gianni, I should have also recognized all the great work you did! You
made videos for many figures. Several are ones that I am not as
familiar with and I am looking forward to learning them from your
videos. Thank you for all your work. Let us know if you add more.
Congratulations!

Hello Gianni,

Very impressive work!

So many figures.

I think that putting the final figure near the video is clever
because it's sometimes frustrating to make all the steps
to only finally see the final figure.

Some more suggestions:

1. Move closer the hands to the camera, like you do at the end of the video.

2. The instructions like this: "2 - 1 sopra 2v, prende su 2l e ritorna"
will be more clear like this: B - 1 sopra 2v, prende su 2l e ritorna.

3. I have some problem with the videos. I can't see the video without many
pauses.
    Perhaps it's only my problem.

4. I didn't see pictures at: Moth, Two women at a water hole, Apache door
variation,
    Smile and Balk, King's throne.

I'm not sure I understood the figure "Smile and Balk". What is it?
And you wrote in the figure "Flower": "Viene chiamato anche in francese Le
Papyrus a 4 Feuilles."
I don't know Italien but i think you mean "Le trèfle à 4 feuilles"....?

Thank you for making this site, and thank you for the invented figures by Marco
(Horned Owl)
and Marta (Volcano Island).
Yours kids?
It's so wonderful we get a new site after two sites had disapeared.

Ciao,
Myriam

Hi Myriam

thanks for your comments, I'll try to follow your suggestions

for the video pauses I think it is a bandwidth problem; if you stop the player
letting it fill the buffer you should be able to play withous any pause... or
just playing again it should flow smooth

smile and balk is just a joke, the simplest figure, the string figure for
dummies... it is a smile, like the Lewis Carrol Cheshire cat that disappear
leaving only his smile.... the balk is even simpler than smile... that's the
reason why the difficulty level is the lower, 1a

BTW did you find that it is possible to order the table by alfabetial order or
by difficulty just clicking on the heading of the table?

Did you find the speed competition against my son on jacob's ladder and many
stars??

Yes Marta (21) and Marco (11) are my kids.. :o)

about the trefle, yes this name is more appropriate than papyrus... but, from
the book I've found it the name is Papyrus (I'll send you a scan of the page)

ciao and thanks again for your comments

Hi Gianni,

Well I don't understand, the papyrus hasn't four leaves.
I have the book but it's the first time I notice the strange name of this
figure.

About the Chestire Cat, Martin Probert had make a re-interpretation
of a Torres string figure in BISFA 4 p194 ("The cat appears suddenly,
then the cat vanishes, reappears and vanishes slowly, ending with a grin").

I translated in French the Martin Probert's article "New String Figures for the
Performing Artist".
http://stringames.ifrance.com/probertmartin2.html#al

No, I didn't click on the heading of the table.
But it"s very good. Why don't write on the site you can do it (in English too)?

What do you mean by "Did you find the speed competition against my son on
jacob's ladder and many stars??"

I added your site to the ISFA's site in French
http://stringames.ifrance.com/isfa5.html

Enjoy string figures
Myriam

Hello I am Michael and I am posting for the first time. Here are 2 figures that
I have found while playing:

The worlds second easiest trick:

1) put string in wrists with half a twist in it.

2) insert right hand into left wrist loops and pull. you have a loop only on
your wrists now!

A boat:

Note: I did this trick while doing a Nauru ending so steps 3-4 are Eongababo
without the caroline extension. This trick is best seen with a long string

1) opening a

2)twist 1 loops towards you, twist 5 loops away from you.

3)push 2n down with 1, 2 over 2f and 5n, enters the 5 loops distally, comes
towards you under interveening strings and twists 1n away from you with an index
twist, 1, still holding 2n down catches 5f and returns. release 5

4) transfer upper 2 loop to 5 from above, release 2, twist 1 towards you, down,
and up into the 5 loops to bring back the 5n string.

5) caroline extension

Hello Michael,

Thank you for sharing.

I tried to do yours figures but I had some problems.
I revrote yours instructions like this:

In the String Figure Magazine of September 2004
"Flower of the Tomano Tree"
you have the instructions for the Eongatubabo sequence.

The worlds second easiest trick:

2) insert from below right hand into left wrist loops and pull. you have a loop
only on your wrists now!

A boat:

3) 1 hooks down 2n.
2 over 2f and 5n, enters the 5 loops distally, and hooks 5n and 2f.
    2 hooks up 1n.,
1, still holding 2n down passes under all intervening strings and picks
up 5f and returns.
     release 5

4) transfer upper 2 loop to 5 from above,release 2,
twist 1 towards you, down, and up into the 5 loops to bring back the 5n
string.

Enjoy string figures

Greetings to everyone. I'm a third grade teacher and my kids have gone insane
over the strings -- it's hard to get them to put the strings away. I love that
they've started inventing their own figures now. Really though I love the
string figures just for myself. I love the meditative quality of doing a string
figure I know really well, and I enjoy the feeling of being incredibly focused
when I'm learning a new string figure. I need to learn the terminology in order
to get to the next level; right now it's pretty much impossible for me to learn
a new string figure unless I have a video clip or really good illustrations, so
I'm getting frustrated. Does anybody know of a good reference for learning the
string figure terminology?

I have tried to learn the string figure Andromeda Galaxy from the book
Fascinating String Figures and have encountered some problems. When I try to
extend it, there is a big gap with the strings bunched together at the sides. I
have tried to lock the strings like the books said, and it didn't work. Any
suggestions?

Hi,

I made the figure from the book and you need in the end to arrange the central
pattern.
If it is not the problem you need to make again the figure and to check all
yours
steps with the illustrations.

I can make a video if you want.

Another figure very close the "sacred circle" with less steps is more easy,
and you have the instructions here
 http://stringames.ifrance.com/sacredcircle.html

If you have another question just ask.

Myriam

Hello,

You'll can buy soon a new book in English.

Cat's cradle and other fantastic string figures
included DVD and two strings
by Elizabeth Encarnacion

A DVD! Very good idea! Like ISFA the author thinks
that learning from videos and the written instructions is the best.

You can see the same picture of the girl
on the Michael Taylor's last book
(Finger string and a book of cat's cradle and other string figures).

Enjoy string games

About a year ago I did something for Brand Pharm - an ad agency that
needed string figures for a pharmaceutical company. It was a fun 2

Dan Plansky needs somebody to be in Dallas for a few days at the end of
April.....but I can't go.

If you are interested - his email is printed below.

you could forward me the contact information for some string figure
performers that you would recommend.

Thanks so much,

Nice paintings, my favorite painting is the one with Andromeda galaxy. THere is
a website that I don't know if anyone knows about besides me. the adress is:
torusflex.com. Click on string figures and you will be taken to a menu. Here,
Jeff Murphy, the same one who did the Isfa articles on math and string figures
has posted his isfa articles. it is worth checking out
I will post more string figure instructions later.
