Hi,

Here a link to a French video by Octav Enea(CNRS)and Mugur Enea.

It's about knots but not only.

The first and the last parts talk about string figures.
You can see also tricks.
One of them is like the trick in the String Figure Magazine of March 2000
"St. Lawrence Knot Trick" collected by David Titus. You get knots on your
strings.

An why spaguetti? It's because, they took spaguetti to
see, which knot is stronger. And if you knot spaguetti
(first put some oil), you can see in the video which
knot is stronger in slow-motion.

A last question:
Do you think one can do string figures with spaguettis?

You also see this cut video

or this photo about hair strings.

Hi,

I don't understand this figure invented by Martin Probert (BISFA 4, 1997).

Perhaps someone can help me for the first step?

"1. Stretch out the loop to form a double-strand.
6 inches (15 cm) from RH end, let RH coil double-strand
clockwise around L2. Remove this tiny coil.
Push a point 3 inches from short end up through the coil.
Pull tight."

Thanks,
Myriam

Hi,

In BISFA 5, Mark wrote an excellent article about the late Honor Maude.

In the "String figure publications" p13, he wrote about Gerd Koch
who made films in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.

I found a film on string figures in Niutao (Tuvalu).
http://www.iwf.de/iwf/do/mkat/details.aspx?Signatur=E+885

And also i found another by Koch-Grünberg, but with only a few string figures in
the middle.

Is there anyone in the Illinois (Rock Island County area) that would
be willing to demonstrate string figures/games and tell the history
to 7th grade Social Studies students at Glenview Middle School in East
Moline? I have the basics down but would like to "WOW" them. I also
have 180 strings made so that the students can learn too and this art
form will continue on.

Thanks for any help, and any resources you could suggest to assist in
this .

Hi,

For all who lovers of the Australian Indigenous culture
i found a quizz http://www.ididj.com.au/education/quiz_originalquestions.html
that include only one question about string figure.

And i didn't know answer to this question and when i saw the answer,
http://www.ididj.com.au/education/quiz.html

it's not help me, i needed to search the meaning of the word.

and you, do you know the answer and its meaning?

It will be interesting to do a quizz but on string figures, on anthropologistes,
on the string figures's contries and why not on the ISFA's members.

Perhaps have you another ideas?

Send your questions to the list and i will do a big quizz.

Someone was watching me do figures a couple days ago and I asked her
what figures she knew. One that she half-remembered from childhood was
called "God's Eye" or "Cat's Eye". She described it as three concentric
diamonds. Does anyone know this figure?

Hello Karine,
I am french too.

Really I don't know if there are other people/sites in italy (well...some of my
friends got infected by me). It seems that all italians know the cat's claddle
but only this!

for the moment I do not have a site just for string figures; it is possible that
I'll put the pictures of the figures that I know in one of my other sites...
sooner of later... who knows!

my first approach to SF was with the Jacob's Ladder found in a Martin Gardner's
book...it was maybe... in the '70... we were young... then recently this
"passion" returned.. and now I'm completely addicted...I have always on my
pockets 4 or 5 strings of different colors...

anyway...

ciao

Gianni.

someting about string figures on the web, in Italian.

Do you have a site? Do you know other people making string figures?

Thank
Myriam

Hi Karine,

It's a good figure but Tangarot collected by Jenness is better.

See here in French
http://membres.lycos.fr/stringgames/tangarot.html

in English
http://membres.lycos.fr/stringgames/tangarotanglais.html

And if you want this in different order, try "Broken home, mended home":
It was collected by Dickey, in French here
http://membres.lycos.fr/stringgames/maisonreparee.html

It's one figure of the String Figure Magazine of June 2006.

Enjoy,
Myriam
