Hey all! Just got back from running errands so I'm going through all
the posts. I didn't know that quote was from "What's Up Doc" - you got
me Joseph. Also didn't know that Jason was a Donna Summer fan! Me
too!! I love their duet, even if it is out of character for Barbra.
Well take care for now. I'm going to go through the other posts.
How lucky can you get,
Bob
Joseph -
I was a big Elvis fan years ago. I actually went into mourning when he died
and wallpapered my room with his pics. Oh teenage years, boy do I miss them.
I'm stumped on the quote. Give the answer, Please!!
Amy
Bob -
My mother was also a Paramount Bobby Soxer and not only got Frank to sign an
autograph she also was able to get backstage into his dressing room and meet
him in a towel. She remembers that day as being the best day of her life,
getting married and adopting me don't even come close, LOL.
I hope I didn't offend you when I said you were too funny, I just got a kick
out of what you said, if I offended you I'm sorry.
Well now back to Barbra, yes she is a very funny lady. I was brought up in a
Jewish household so she reminds me of many relatives I have. I wonder if she
is as unreachable and difficult as many people portray her to be. I think she
just knows what she wants and gets it the way she knows best. Her public
persona seems easygoing to me. I guess I just want to think the best about
her.
Okay, I've said enough for now.
Take care,
Amy
Robert, Joe, I bring tape recorders to all concerts...there i said it.
Yes, I have a recording of her in San Jose. Yes i have a recording of
all Jane's concerts the one of Domain Chandon is particulary good. So
how did Richard get past the metal detector in Barbra's San Jose
concert?
If you ask me (OK BEG ME) I'll tell ya.
Yes , rob I'm in Santa Rosa. Wondering weather my tomatoes will grow
this year?
What with the cold unseasonal weather and all.
Rob you can still get Jane's CD's from www.musicblvd.com I use them
from my web-tv. If you buy three CD's they give you 100 flyer miles on
the airlines.
I would love to find more about Jason.

Anika Baker had to stop for a while to have children. She miscarried on
the road. I went all the way down to the Circle Star in San Carlos,
only to find out her show was cancelled at the last moment. No notice.
Rude. From what I hear she has been doing that for quite some time.
Aretha Franklin was for a time very jealous of Anita Baker. As was
Dionne Warwick. It's hard to be on top all those years and then have
some young whippersnapper try to take your spot. Anita Baker said at
one of her concerts I went to, that she went to the grammy's and Dionne
Warwick came up to her and said, "your a tiny little thing, you keep
singing.." and just walked off. I guess Anita took it as a insult.

Hey Richard! Saw your 2 e-mails. Listen, I'm just as protective of
Barbra as anyone, but I will say this about Don Johnson. They have
remained good friends (Barbra has remained good friends with all of her
exes) and he came to her 1994 concert. So she still likes him - he
can't be that bad! *L*
I was also a huge Jane Olivor fan. I saw her at the Warfield Theater in
San Francisco. I think you live in Santa Rosa right? Hi neighbor!! I
used to have all her LP's. I'm glad to hear she's still around and
starting to make music again.
Take care,
Bob
I was unable to subscribe to the Helen Schneider listserv. Any clues?
So what did you hear don jonson (isn't it without an "H") did to her?
<I know ALL the words to Barbara's movies. I wonder, is that healthy?>
Well, of course! Although you made a MAJOR faux pas in spelling her name
the old way (with three A's), I shall forgive you <hehe>.
I don't know WHAT it is about good lines of script that make me want to
memorize it, but one can evoke all the emotion of the entire plot sometimes
with just a few lines. If it makes you feel better to crack a smile or be
able to generate a tear, than these lines are more important than any
equation. Besides, it's not like human beings use more than 20% of our
brains anyway -- so my reasoning it no knowledge is wasted. I've got a
doctorate degree (in law) but I still have lines to learn better.
Richard -- you got it -- my quote was from What's Up Doc. I managed to get
a copy of the script in paperback from the Hello Gorgeous store/museum. It
is precious to me because it is a play-by-play in novel form of the film.
Here's a tough one, which I use all the time: "[You were] coiled like a
cobra, ready to strike!" Or better: "Love is the exception, to every
rule, it is not?" <hint: it's said with an English accent>
I didn't know about Cis Corman's husband being a shrink.
Yes, I like Anita Baker and I hope she doesn't buy into one of her
interview quotes that her voice is deteriorating. Unless she is smoking, I
doubt that it is (see Aretha Franklin).
Yes, Jane Oliver, in my opinion, does not have a voice comparable to
Barbra, but I'm familiar with her duet with Johnny Mathis, which as far as
I know, was her only hit.
<her performance at the Great American Music Hall was a REAL BUMMER, she
had only a piano player, (not easy to deal with musically), she forgot
words, went flat, flubbed notes, had to stop in the middle of a song to say
she didn't know the rest, etc. Really a unfortunate performance.>
Goodness, it's called practice. Sounds like she's on drugs or something.
That's no way for a performer to act.
<Didn't Jason go to Berkeley for school? >
I don't know, but I'd like to know. I don't hear that much about him, yet
he and I are so close in age, both gay, etc. I DO know that he was a big
Donna Summer fan (and was excited by the prospect of his mother doing a
duet with her before it came to fruition).

Joe, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. but web-tv cuts-off from
1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. every wednesday for maintenance. Hence no e-mail

Helen Schneider was a very popular cabaret singer in the late 70's. She
sang at the Roxy(L.A.), the Copacapana and other night clubs in New
York, she was very popular with the gay scene, but she disappeared for a
while. She was touted a next Streisand. Then unbeknowst to me I found
out that she was in Berlin of all places doing the Sally Bowles
character in Cabaret. I found out that she is VERY popular in Germany.
She's achieved diva staus there, but not here in the states. She still
records albums. check out www.musicboulevard.com , they have foreign
releases too, which I think is great.
I'm so chatty ain't I?
I ordered three Maureen McGovern albums they should arrive next week.
don johnson (uncapitalized to diminish his importance)
Why do I dislike don? Simple. He dumped our Barbra, enough said. I'm
starting to get verklempt now.... him and that nasty mike wallace from
that show sixty minutes...vat a shande. They BOTH were'nt very nice to
her.
I know ALL the words to Barbara's movies. I wonder, is that healthy?
Just think, all that space that space in my brain that could have been
filled with physics, chemistry, linear equations and instead it's filled
with:
"you never give up do you?"
"not unless I'm absolutely forced to, but I'm a good loser"
"better than I"
"well...I had....more practice"

Oy Memories!
Joe did you know that Bab's friend Cis Corman (one of her closest
friends) her husband is a shrink. It's through the corman's that she
has gotten her intoduction to pyschology. They are very close mentors
for her.
So you like Anita Baker huh?
She's disappeared from the scene as well.
So has Sade, who makes an album and does a world tour and then just
vanishes for 5 years or so. I think they come back cause they run out
of money. the last bit of news about SADE was she was arrested in
Jaimaca for refusing to stop for a policeman and reckless driving. She
didn't make her court date, so now there is a warrant out for her
arrest. She is now in London where she has converted a townhouse into a
studio for herself. She is supposedly working on a new album, but that
is just a rumor.
One more thing, ever heard of Jane Olivor? I'm a big Jane Olivor fan
from way back. She was touted as the next Streisand as well. I thought
she was dead... come to find out she was living in Florida, in a condo.
SHE also ran out of money, and is now singing again. i have seen her
three times now. Her concert at the Domain Chandon vineyards in Napa
was nice. Her perfromance at the Warfield was equally as good, but her
performance at the Great American Music Hall was a REAL BUMMER, she had
only a piano player, (not easy to deal with musically), she forgot
words, went flat, flubbed notes, had to stop in the middle of a song to
say she didn't know the rest, etc. Really a unfortunate performance.
Ok now i'm done for the next two years..

Thanks for the e-mail Joseph. I hadn't heard about the gay wedding
incident with Barbra's son. It is a shame about the New York Post.
When I was growing up in NYC, it was a very decent newspaper. Then
Rupert Murdoch bought it and turned it into a real rag.
I remember Barbra speaking out about Amendment 2 and calling for a
boycott of Colorado. She took a lot of flack for that but I really
respected her for taking a stand.
I am also a big Elvis fan (pre-army Elvis). My mom also adores Barbra
and so did my dad (he passed away 5 years ago).
If I find out anything more about Jason's film I will certainly let you
know. You stumped me with that quote. I give up! *L*
Take care all,
Bob
If anyone finds out more about Jason's film (because Barbra has mentioned
in interviews that he has been "directing"), I would love to know about it.

I believe it was right before the Amendment 2 debacle in Colorado (where
the State tried to pre-empt local protections for gay and lesbian rights),
there were tabloid papers talking about how Barbra was so furious at her
son for having a "gay wedding" without her attendance. It was soon after
the Amendment 2 legislation that Barbra was quoted as calling for a boycott
of the state, but either recanted or claimed she was misquoted. Either
way, there have been some wild rumors about Barbra, such as the tawdry
front cover page of the New York Post (a conservative paper) which read
"Senator Streisand" -- insinuating that Barbra would run for a seat.
My mother was a big Elvis fan, but my father loved -- and first got me
hooked on Streisand. He also loved Dionne Warwick and Neil Diamond and
Karen Carpenter.
I think Sinatra was a great icon, although for some reason I listen almost
exclusively to female singers. Believe it or not -- I think Sinatra HELD
BACK on his voice. Barbra always seems to push every note to it's last
precious possible moment -- and with her talent, that can go a long way.

Amy- Great to hear from you. I'm glad I was able to amuse you! *L* And
I'm glad you like all those women as well.
I was surprised too that the media didn't play up Jason's coming out
more either. So no - you didn't miss anything. He actually did an
independent film where he talked very openly about being gay. It was
supposed to be shown last year at the San Francisco International Film
Festival, but it was pulled at the last minute. I don't know the story
behind that.
I also feel sad about Frank's death. While not a huge fan like my mom,
I love music. It's one of the most important things in my life. I
wouldn't want to live without it. So I definitely appreciate the
enormous loss. I do have some CD's of his as well. My mom saw him many
times at the Paramount Theater in NYC. Once he brushed by her and
kissed her on the cheek. She didn't wash her face for days! *L* I love
that story and I could totally relate. If I ever got to meet Barbra in
person, I would never forget it for the rest of my life. I hope you are
doing okay. Frank will always live on through his music and his films.
Every time I listen to Judy Garland, it's like she's still here.
I do agree with you though. No one sounds like Barbra. What an
unbelievable voice. And she's so funny too.
I'm glad you're on the list too and I look forward to hearing from you
and everyone else.
It's Gonna Be A Great Day!
Bob

Diana and Jacqueline Kennedy. Gee, do you think I'm gay? *L*

Bob -
You are too funny. I like most of those women too, uh oh, *G*.
I'm glad Jason came out, but I'm very surprised the media didn't have a field
day with it unless I missed something now living out in farm country.
I am a big Sinatra fan and have not been myself lately since his death as well
so I know how Mom feels. I belong to two Sinatra mailing lists that have
great support since he died. Don't tell anyone but I think nobody beats
Barbra's voice though. They have 2 different styles but I have never and will
never hear anyone sing greater than Barbra. Oy, it's like buttah.
I'm glad to be part of this list and my rule of thumb basically is, If it's
got Barbra, it's got to be good.
Talk to you later,
Amy
Hi everybody! Glad to hear from all of you! I just have a few comments
from all the e-mails I read.
Amy - Jason did finally come out awhile back and is open about being
gay. He has been rumoured to have a partner who models for International
Male, but who knows. I'm sure that's one reason why Barbra is so
supportive of the gay community, since her son is gay. Also she's a
good liberal Democrat! *L*
There's no way I could name a favorite song - there are just too many.
It reminds me of when Frank Sinatra died (my mom's idol - she's been
kind of down since his death). Larry King asked his close friends to
name their favorite song but they couldn't - just too many. I did get to
see her in 1994 in San Jose and she sang "He Touched Me' which is a big
favorite of mine. I also saw her in 1993 at Clinton's Inaugural Gala.
As for her involvement with James Brolin, I agree. She is a very
intelligent woman and capable of making the right decisions for herself.
I think she should just follow her heart and do what feels right. They
seem very happy together and I'm happy for her.
Joseph - I love your website, it's great!!!! That's great that you are
from the East Bay. Please let me know if you ever come out here to
visit. My partner and I would love to meet you guys. I still have
family in the NY area. I'll let you know if we come there as well.
I do know that Barbra has an apartment in Manhattan, but I don't know
where. For some reason, I keep thinking Central Park West, but I'm not
sure.
The only other mailing list I am on is for Madonna. That one is really
cooking. I get about 35 e-mails a day from Madonna fans!! I have 6
ICONS! *L* - Barbra, Madonna, Judy Garland, Leontyne Price, Princess
Diana and Jacqueline Kennedy. Gee, do you think I'm gay? *L*
I have a different take on the psychobabble you mentioned and Barbra's
spiritual journey. I love how she has grown and changed over the years.
She calls herself "a work in progress" as we all are. I love that she
has spent so much time examining herself and finding out who she is.
I'm into all of that. I thought the dialogue in "The Prince Of Tides"
was amazing. You rarely hear conversations like that in movies about
people really trying to find out who they are.
As for Barbra's spirituality, I never thought she was going in the
direction of Dionne Warwicke. "Higher Ground" is a very spiritual CD.
She sings about faith and believing in something outside yourself,
discovering who you are and why you are here, and that everything in
life is a lesson to be learned. I love all of that as I am very
spiritual myself.
Anyways, I guess that's it for now. I know we won't all agree on
everything, but I hope we can all respect each other's thoughts and
feelings. I love that this list has started and I love hearing from all
of you.
Take care for now,
Bob
My favorite song is Memories. It just brings a chill to me everytime I hear
it. I try to play it on my birthday every year, it just means a lot to me.
I love every song from Funny Girl as well.
Amy
Hi everyone -
My name is Amy and I'm a 35 year old mother of 3 girls. I am originally from
Brooklyn, NY but have lived in Kissimmee, FL for the past 2 years. Of course
I don't have to say this but I Love Barbra. I became a big fan when I first
saw Funny Girl as a child. It is still my favorite movie of all time. WIth 3
kids I don't really have the finances to collect much memorabilia on her but I
do have most of her albums/CD's.
Thanks for starting this list.
Amy
It is hard, I know, but why don't we describe our favorite songs and what
they mean to us.
I love most of her soundtrack songs, including The Main Event, You're the
Top (from What's Up Doc), For Pete's Sake (which I don't believe was ever
released).
From Hello Dolly I REALLY love Just Leave Everything to Me (a la Minute
Waltz it has a very intelligent yet quickly spoken lyric).
I think Enough is Enough could probably be released every year and it would
always be significant and danceable. I never tire of it.
There's more, but that should get us started.

I guess you DID beat me to the MMcG list -- but great! Saves me some
administrativa (sp?). I'm going to subscribe now. I saw her at Michael's
Pub here in NYC about ten years ago and I have every single album of hers.
She has a great official web site and has also been very AIDS active from
the get-go, which is something I respect.
If any of the other subscribers moderate lists or maintain web pages, lets
hear about it.
I couldn't agree more about this "father to me" problem. I too have always
been concerned when analogies to one's parents in a relationship come into
play. However, I can only assume that she is saying that with the greatest
of caution. Then again, she listened to what I consider psychobabble about
healing one's inner child for years. It was at that point that I felt I
was losing a lot of my common political feelings with her. She seemed to
be going in the direction Dionne Warwick went in with the psychic friends
network -- as if everything could be solved with a little hypnosis and the
right fees paid to the right "medium".
So who is "Helen Schneider"?
To see the list of Divas I have (although I should narrow it down) and the
pages I have dedicated to each, see my divas page on my site.
The bar I saw Jason in is called "The Spike". It is a leather/biker bar,
but there are lots of what New Yorkers call "Chelsea boys" (white T-shirt
preppy types and muscle queens) who spill over into it too.
I'm sorry not to clarify the "Century 21" comment. I keep forgetting it is
a real estate conglomerate too. Here in NYC, Century 21 is also a
department store located near the foot of the twin towers/World Trade
Center.
I never liked Don Jonson either and was glad she did not date him for long,
but what do you dislike about him?
<The ballad "A child is born" from the Lazy Afternoon album. Is a prime
example.>
I didn't particularly care for that song actually. However, there are a
lot of songs that were never (to my knowledge) released as singles which I
find to be my favorites of Barbra. For example, the duet she sings with
herself on "Barbra Joan Streisand" -- A House is Not a Home/No More Bells
to Answer is just hauntingly beautiful. I don't think album covers that
are so gloomy sell well though. Witness the first album by Anita Baker
which was later re-released with a much more dynamic front like her first
hit album (which was her second recorded) in which she sang "Good Love".
On another note, does anyone else have the words to "What's Up Doc"
memorized like I do?

Joe, do I think he's in it for the money...no. But, he, like Don
Johnson (S.O.B.) has seemed to enjoy a sudden surge in their career's.
J.B. has money but not in the league BS does. I think they are happy,
however, when i hear she says things like, "he's like a father to me",
that gives me pause. I have to wonder is this love or a compulsion
growing from an unfullfilled need in childhood? i.e., an unnatural
attraction.
A Maureen McGovern List? Sorry, beat you to that.

Have you ever heard of Helen Schneider?
My GOD! What gay-bar did you see Jason Gould at?
BTW, what do you mean by century 21?
the real estate?
As far as piano accompanment goes, it can be wonderful for a certain
ballads though. Too many times artists/producers take a simple song
that is lovely in itself and over-muscle it with everything from the
symphonic choir. Sometimes it's not necessary. The ballad "A child is
born" from the Lazy Afternoon album. Is a prime example.

Although I know that the California property laws are community property,
I'm sure they will have the requisite protections (i.e., prenuptials) and
she could always (God forbid) argue that their "main" residence was
elsewhere. For example, New York is NOT a community property state.
Do any of you think JB is doing it for the money? I think they are sincere
about their relationship. She is too smart a woman to be duped and he
really had nothing to gain and nothing to lose by being with her, except
for the life he wanted to share with someone. He was already famous,
working, rich, just not historical, which doesn't seem to be something he
really cares to be.
I don't know if Jason is still with the guy it was rumored he "married"
anymore. HOWEVER, I did see Jason several years ago in Century 21 in
Manhattan (looking buffed, which surprised me) in a white tank top with a
blondish guy who seemed somewhat demure. I was so shocked that I forgot
the package I bought and had to go back the next day. Then, several weeks
ago, I saw Jason again in a gay bar in Manhattan and he was with a group of
people. He looked so much shorter than he does in the movie (shorter than
my 5'9") and he was dressed extremely modestly (in a white alligator
shirt). He did not seem imposing and looks younger than I do, even though
he's a year older (30-31). I couldn't compel myself to say anything to
him. I guess I feel like I do not have a right to go up to celebrities
when I see them. Interestingly though, after I saw Roslyn Kind (Barbra's
sister has an official web site at www.roslynkind.com), my ex-wife and I
went up to her and shook her hands, as did most of the audience -- which
happened to include Liza Minelli that night. Barbra and Roslyn's mother
(they had different father's, both of whom are now deceased), was there
too, with a small dog. It was an intimate dinner club in the Broadway
district and I was surprised that Roslyn seemed to be holding back when she
sang, since she obviously has "it".
I have her CD in which, like a Maureen McGovern album I have, she is ONLY
accompanied by a piano. That really takes away from the gorgeous melodies
and I think that Barbra benefits from and I think as listeners with just a
piano we miss out. The same thing was true with the three-tape set that
Linda Ronstandt did. With the symphony behind her she sounded like the
legend that many of these great singers will never become without it. That
saddens me.
<Hope the clip is mpeg format under 500k, otherwise I won't be able to
watch it. (web-tv bummer)>
If you want, when I get it, I will save a copy that is under that size and
send it to you without the audio.
One more thing before I forget -- Just like Buttah -- the Barbra fan
magazine -- recently had a little article about Linda Eder, who I have
singing on Star Search for every performance and who I saw in Jekyl & Hyde.
I cant tell you how many people have told me "There goes Joe playing
Barbra again" when it is her. She has a very broad range (can hit some
very high notes, almost as high as Mariah Carey, but she also has the power
and style of Barbra, who she emulates no doubt, as Celine admittedly does.
I have all of Linda Eder's albums and she will soon be in the Scarlet
Pumpernickel. Jekyl & Hyde was WRITTEN for HER and performed in London for
years before it go to the states. I believe there are five versions of the
soundtrack.

Robert -- Yes, this new list is just getting started. Opposite of you, I
am a native Californian living in Brooklyn by blessed choice (but I am
proud to be from California and visit all the time). I grew up in the East
Bay (Hayward-Fremont) and born in Los Angeles (what was then called San
Pedro I guess). Many in my family are still there.
I believe I heard that Barbra has an apartment (and basically has always
maintained one) in Manhattan. I tried so hard to see the shooting of
Mirror but the city would not divulge the locations and I was in law school
at the time so I did not have much spare time to go hunting for the crew,
although it was in the paper almost daily. There is an entire department
of the city of New York dedicated to accommodating movie-makers. Even in
my neighborhood (Carroll Gardens) a lot of movies are filmed (some new Alan
Alda movie was done here recently).
If any of us get any public announcements from the former HG museum owner,
please forward them (or the URL's) to the list.
I only received ONE email from the Sony web site, whereas the
www.celineonline.com web site has been much more responsive. For most of
the divas I admire I have joined listservs, but the traffic is usually
lighter, as can be expected. I even belong to a Phyllis Hyman listserv
(she killed herself several years ago) and we get a newsletter once a
month. She may have up to three posthumous albums.
I am considering starting listservs for other, lesser known divas (like
Maureen McGovern).
Thanks for starting us talking.

Joe, she'd be crazy to marry JB what with the California property laws.
If they get divorced she'd have to give him a right lump sum.
Incidently, Joe do you or anyone out there have a picture of Jason
Gould's supposed significant other? I heard he was a model for
international male.
I am so sorry I missed your spot on Rosie.
I was waiting all week for it and I got side tracked, and I missed it.
:-(
Hope the clip is mpeg format under 500k, otherwise I won't be able to
watch it. (web-tv bummer)
P.S. I can only see a visual clip with no audio file attachment, (DOUBLE

Hey Joseph! I just got your e-mail - the first one I have received from
this Barbra list. I hope many more will follow from all of us! I
definitely want to keep in touch with other Barbra fans and hear the
latest news on Barbra.
I am originally from NYC myself (the Bronx). I have lived in San
Francisco for the last 19 1/2 years. I live in the Castro, just blocks
from the "Hello Gorgeous" museum. It really is unfortunate about the
closing of the museum. The guy who owns it has become very bitter about
his business failing and has lashed out at everyone, including Barbra
and even Rosie O'Donnell. He has publicly expressed his disappointment
in Barbra and has accused Rosie of being dishonest about some of her
Streisand memorabilia on her show. It seems that he just wants to blame
someone for his business failing.
I have gone to the Sony website on Barbra many times. I typed in my
e-mail address as they requested, but I have never received any news
from them as they said they would send. Has anyone else?
Well, I would love to hear back from you or anyone else on this list.
Take care for now and have a good night.
Bob
Well, there are now ten of us on this list, which was just started a few
weeks ago. I wanted to get some of your introductions on the road. I
assume most of you have seen my Barbra site and know about all the
wonderful things on the Barbra web ring.
I should mention that I am going to be putting up a movie clip on my site
of the "bumper" that I did for the Rosie O'Donnell show on Barbra's
birthday (which you should all know is April 24). It came out quite well.
I was really pleased with it.
Make sure you visit Sony's official Barbra site (www.barbra-streisand.com)
and let me know what gossip you've heard about when her and Jim Brolin are
getting married.
I'm sure you've all heard about the closing of Hello Gorgeous in San
Francisco (the Barbra museum/shop). I was disappointed of course.

The shrine in the Castro District of San Francisco was called "Hello
Gorgeous" (which, of course, were the first two words she ever said on
film). There's a link to it from my Barbra page at
www.haydennet.com/barbra.
I used to live in the East Bay of California, which is why I got to it as
often as I did, although I'm a New Yorker.
I hear they are having a huge sale on Barbra merchandise now.

So they closed the shrine, huh ?
Do you have any idea why?
Damm, here I am 50 miles away and I was one museum/shrine exclusively
devoted to BJS. Now it's too late. What exactly did I miss?

I just wanted to introduce myself to get the ball rolling on the Streisand
listserv. I am waiting for a few more subscribers before I start some
threads. Thank you for subscribing.
Meanwhile, please feel free to visit my web page, which has a Barbra page
on the Barbra web ring and some other links, a gallery and some of my
homage to her.
