Join the August 25th Katrina Anniversary Critical Mass!
Last Friday in August: Critical Mass for Climate Justice and
Solidarity with Survivors on Hurricane Katrina Anniversary!
August 25th marks the 1-year anniversary Katrina reaching hurricane
strength. In the days that followed the storm would strengthen rapidly
over an unnaturally warm Gulf of Mexico, ultimately striking the coast
and leaving thousands dead and homeless, victims of an uncaring
government, centuries of racism, and an ever more chaotic global climate.
This year, let's take to the streets with a reminder that the tragedy
in the Gulf continues and a demand that it never be repeated.
Get ready for a Critical Mass for Climate Justice on August 25th in
your town!
Why Critical Mass? Car Culture, Oil, and Environmental Injustice
Critical Mass is a celebration of bike culture, a meaningful
alternative to car culture and greenhouse gas generating fossil fuels.
Looking closely, you can see a slick, oily residue connecting the dots
of injustice from Colombia to Baghdad to the Gulf Coast.
Along Louisiana's coast, once stunning wetlands are overrun by oil
canals and drills. Residents of Louisiana's "Cancer Alley", a corridor
of oil refineries and petrochemical plants, suffer the highest cancer
rates in the United States. During Hurricane Katrina, black gold
flowed from these plants into urban areas, bathing backyards in a
petrochemical gumbo.
For the oil industry, demand nothing less than global Climate Justice:
the dismantling of decades of racist exploitation, violence and
murder, toxic pollution, and denial of oil's role in climate chaos!
Climate Injustice: Katrina is just the beginning
As the climate chaos continues to escalate, the killer storms will
become ever more frequent, sea levels will keep rising, and climate
evacuees will go from thousands of millions. And the enduring racism
in our society promises those suffering from these ecological
disasters will continue to be the poor and people of color.
Climate change will affect all of us, but it will --and has-- affected
some more than others. Combating this social and ecological
devastation is the movement for Climate Justice.
Join Us on August 25th!
Rising Tide North America ( www.risingtidenorthamerica.org ), a
network of radical climate campaigners (including relief workers from
Louisiana to New England) is working with Critical Mass groups around
the country on August 25th to draw attention to the movement for
climate justice and the important relationship between climate change,
catastrophic storms, and environmental racism. The idea is to remind
people of the still ongoing crisis in the Gulf and the potential for
further catastrophic events from fossil fuel inspired climate change.
We're looking for contacts with critical mass groups who want to
collaborate on this, which would basically mean committing to
organizing a ride marking the day and hopefully:
1. Organizing a sign making making party for the ride ("More Cars =
More Climate Change = More Katrinas", "Critical Mass for Climate
Justice", "Katrina was Environmental Racism", etc.).
2. Advertising the event to make it a big critical mass (we're
developing designs for flyers, handbills, etc.)
3. Collecting funds at the Critical Mass ride to send to activist and
relief groups in New Orleans.
4. Print out educational literature to hand out to people on the
street witnessing the Mass (we've got some of this in the works too.)
5. Spreading the word to Critical Mass riders in other cities.
PLEASE contact us if you might be interested!
Below is more information....feel totally encouraged to forward this
on to anyone and everyone you know that might be interested. You can
write me back or email katrina@... for more
info. There will be a lot more info at www.risingtidenorthamerica.org
really soon as well!
THANKS!
On Friday, August 25th, join Critical Mass riders around the continent
and Rising Tide in exposing the oil industry for its role in decades
of abuse in the Gulf of Mexico and around the world and illustrate
that a world without oil and racist exploitation is possible.
Contact Rising Tide ( Katrina@... ) and let us
know where your ride is going to happen so we can help spread the word
about rides around the continent. Spread the word to friends and help
us organize this action!
On Rising Tide's website you can find out if there is a ride planned
in your area. We've also got flyers, ideas for bike signs, and useful
stuff.
Remember: climate change was only a catalyst for the Katrina disaster.
Please support and organize other Katrina anniversary events and
challenge racism in all of its forms in the Gulf and your own
community! Check out Rising Tide's website for more information about
Katrina survivor solidarity events, and let us know about other
Katrina anniversary and solidarity events in your town. We also
encourage everyone participating to take up a collection for ongoing
relief and advocacy efforts in the Gulf - check out
www.risingtidenorthamerica.org for more details.
Rising Tide North America - working to support and encourage people
and grassroots groups in taking action against the causes of climate
change.

Critical Mass - a worldwide movement of bicyclers reclaiming the
streets. www.critical-mass.org (unofficial website)
Yes, there's going to be another World Naked Bike Ride this Saturday, June 10th. This time it's going to be in St. Petersburg. Please see the details below.
We'll be supporting bicycling, alternative transportation, individual empowerment, peace and independence from foreign oil.
Hope to see you there!
Here are the final details:
Saturday, June 10, 2006.
Demen's Landing Park in St. Petersburg (1st Ave. S.) just south of the St. Pete Pier.
Meet around the Centennial Oak Tree at 11:00 am for body painting.
We'll ride north, then out the St. Pete Pier, then past Vinoy Park on up to North Shore & back. Approximate distance is about 4 miles.
Bring signs
and bikes. Bring body paint (you can find it at Spencer's and other places). Wear g-strings and pasties (you can find them at Frederick's, Victoria's Secret and Skinz in Clearwater).
Think about what slogans you want to use. Wear sunblock (does body paint work with sunblock? better try it out!). "Burn calories, not oil."
The Caribbean Carnival will be going on at Vinoy Park so there'll be a carnival-like atmosphere in the air and lots of nearly naked bike riders too!
If you have any further questions, please call me at (813) 220-4315.
Bicyclists everywhere,
Please vote for a "pro-biking/anti-car culture"
video semifinalist
in an acclaimed student filmmaking competition. Five
finalists from
hundreds of socially relevant entries will be
presented at the United
Nations in mid-June. This entry, "One Less Car, One
More Bike" allows
two passionate bike riders to reflect on the benefits
of riding
bicycles in a post-industrial cityscape marred with
traffic jams, car
exhaust, and air pollution. Filmed in Pittsburgh, PA,
this entry could
take place in any city where motorists breed the oil
dependency that
leads to oil wars and disregard for the environment.
Vote for the
entry "One Less Car, One More Bike" here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12721177 Let the voices of
these two cyclists be heard in the halls of the United
Nations: Biking gives
us a freedom that should no longer be trampled on by
the car industry.
Voting ends on June 7.
Please pass this message on to all of your cycling
friends as swiftly
as possible.
Best,
Jamie Walker (director, editor, composer for "One Less
Car, One More Bike")

Why ride a bicycle to work, or anywhere, instead of driving? Math.
• A new car costs about $20,000. A new bicycle costs about $450.
• When a car breaks down it can require lengthy, costly repairs, often
exceeding the value of the car. When a bicycle breaks down, the cost
is rarely beyond that of a new tire or chain, and folks at the local
bike shop will often fix it for the cost of the materials.
• A car requires insurance, registration, and a valid California
license. A bicycle requires the sense of balance that god gives
eight-year-olds.
• Car lanes are 12 feet wide. Bike lanes are about 2 feet wide.
Consider the savings in asphalt alone.
• Gas prices are about $3.09 a gallon, while water bottles average
approximately $1.07 with tax. And many people in cars drink bottled
water anyway.
• Bicycling releases adrenalin, endorphins, and hormones, resulting in
a sense of energy and well-being. Driving releases carbon monoxide and
pollutants, resulting in greenhouse gases and skin cancer.
• Road-rage abounds. Bike-lane rage is as yet unheard of.
• Cars require airbags, safety restraints, seatbelts, anti-lock
brakes, and dozens of other safety mechanisms. Bicyclists are required
to wear a helmet if they are under the age of 12.
• Driving too much results in eye-strain, backaches, migraines, weight
gain, and highway hypnosis. Bicycling too much results in sexy calves
and thigh muscles.
• To date, no one has ever been involved in a deadly alcohol-related
hit-and-run on a bicycle.
• Drivers who fall asleep at the wheel result in 20,000 accidents a
year. Bicyclists who fall asleep simply fall down.
• Most people drive to work and bicycle on weekends to relax. In fact,
some people drive elsewhere on vacation in order to bicycle there.
This seems like an unnecessary extra step.
• Between traffic, circuitous routes, one-way streets, etc., it takes
about 15 minutes to get from one end of San Luis Obispo to the other
by car. On a bicycle it takes about 20. Which is about the minimum
amount of aerobic exercise you're supposed to do anyway.
• In fact, the Surgeon General has determined that 20 minutes of
exercise 3-4 times a week increases life expectancy up to 30 years. So
then, with this 60 hours of exercise a year spread over those 30 extra
years, you lose only 75 days to that exercise, leaving you 10,883 you
wouldn't have otherwise.
• Finally, bicycling takes less real "energy" than any other form of
transportation. From walking to air travel, in terms of caloric cost
(a calorie literally being a unit of energy-producing potential equal
to the amount of heat released upon oxidation, whether that fuel be in
the body or from gasoline, electricity, or any other fuel source),
bicycling is the absolute most efficient means of transport that has
ever been invented. Anywhere. Ever.
So hurrah for bicycles. And share the road. We bicyclists take up 1/6
as much of it as you do.

The legal details from the City of Tampa are: the genitals must be covered and the female nipples. G-strings and pasties would meet the legal requirement. Maybe even a sock for the guys; maybe a piece of tape (ouch!). Bodypaint has been deemed insufficient for these body parts. Sorry.
Sorry we didn't get the injunction in time. The police succeeded with delay tactics. We should be able to get the injunction for the June 10 ride, but G-strings and pasties are a big step beyond what the Hillsborough County anti-nudity ordinance requires!

The ride is ON! Both newspapers will be there. Most TV stations will be there; maybe radio stations too. This is going to be the biggest and best Free Speech event in Tampa's HISTORY !!!
Meet at 11:00 am at the corner of Bay-to-Bay & Bayshore.
Ride starts at 12:00 Noon.
We ride south to the gate of MacDill AFB and back (7 mile round trip).
Maybe form "Pyramid of Human Dignity and Naked People Power" at the gate with signs like "Torture is NOT an American value".
Some will continue north from the starting point to the Gasparilla ship/Columbus fountain and back (14 mile round trip).
After-ride party at Dog Saloon on Bay-to-Bay opening at 1:00 pm JUST FOR US!!!
I just finished subitting an announcement of the WNBR on WMNF 88.5 FM's Community Event Calendar. It has to be approved first, but once it's posted it'll help build up our ridership.
Hopefully they'll announce it on the air all through the week. Stay tuned! ____ John
There will be a WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE on Sunday, March 12, 2006 in Tampa starting at Bayshore Patriots Corner (Bay-to-Bay & Bayshore) and riding down to the gate of MacDill AFB and back.
Bodypainting, costuming and bike decorating will begin at the park at 11:00 AM.
Come early; parking is limited. The ride will commence at 12:00 Noon.
If you are a peace advocate, a bike advocate, a body advocate...
Hello St. Pete Critical Mass,
My name is John Palm and I'm a new member.
Have any of you heard of the World Naked Bike Ride???
Yes, seriously!
It's about up-with-bikes, pro-alternative transportation, pro-body
power, pro-body acceptance, pro-peace. Protest oil-dependency,
vehicle emissions, war, body shame. Check out the world site:
http://www.WorldNakedBikeRide.org
They're held once or twice a year and there's gonna be one in Tampa
along Bayshore Blvd on Sunday, March 12, 2006. It will start with
(get this!) body-painting and bike decorating at 11:00 AM at
Bayshore Patriots Corner at the corner of Bayshore and Bay-to-Bay.
The ride will start at 12:00 Noon and they'll ride south on Bayshore
for about 3.5 miles to the gate of MacDill AFB. There will be a
rally/protest here for a while including a possible Pyramid of Power
(a nude pyramid protesting torture of nude prisoners at Abu Graib
prison in Iraq). From there, they'll ride back to the starting point
(7 mile round trip). Some may ride another 3.5 miles north on
Bayshore to where the Jose Gaspar ship is docked and play around in
the Columbus water fountain before heading back to the start (14
mile round trip).
A court injunction is being sought to give legal protection to the
nudity when it's combined with Free Speech. The ACLU is looking into
assisting.
If you're interested, please join the group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WorldNakedBikeRideTampa
There are flyers available to distribute:

This will be one ride you (or Tampa) will never forget!
Let's ride!

my name is nina and i'm 16. i'm glad we finally have a critical mass
going! has someone created a myspace for it? i created the st. pete
fnb myspace so if it hasn't been done, it would be a good way to get
the word around. also, flyers and things of that nature i hope are
being ciruclated. as for the rides, i'm hoping to be able to come to
one this sunday depending on if i work or not, but i will definitely
be making an effort to come to any ride i can. anyway, i want to meet
everyone and from the looks of it we need a bigger crowd so i'm
excited to see what's to come.
if you need to contact me, i usually use the following e-mail. thanks!

oh right, bevin! i didn't look at your address hard enough.
i know i will be back out there campaigning, getting people to come,
if my bike worked. i can pay for the inner-tube, but if you could put
it on right for me, that would be really great!
i'm kinda busy getting other activism rollin', but i know i can make
time for crit mass!
at least we did better than orlando for a first CM!

that's thoroughly seconded! firstly, when did you come to critical
mass? i my biggest ride was only 11 people, but we got stopped by the
cops, and blocked up 4th street pretty badly thanks to that one chick!
i made flyers, i can post them up here, and i can also make more, but
i would suggest sticking them EVERYWHERE! stick them on bikes, in free
newspaper dispensers, wheatpasted to poles, on bulletin boards,
everywhere! then the next ride should be somewhat massive, and will
only grow from there!

Ive only been to one critical mass becuase this mass is hardly
massive . something needs to be done about it and we need to just do it
not think to much about it, but do it the right way
my bike has been out of commission for a while now. it's a simple
problem, but when i tried to fix it, i fucked it up.
the back inner-tube popped. when i changed it out, i had trouble
tightening the wheel to the frame. i also had trouble with a new lump
in the tire. i got the wheel tightness problem fixed, but the lump popped.
if someone knoledgable could help me change the inner-tube out, i
would really appreciate it!
