LFAS stands for "Low Frequency Active Sonar" and since 1998, The Stop LFAS Worldwide Network has campaigned for a stop to the unnecessary harm being done to marine life due to high intensity underwater sound sources.

Now entering our tenth year, we're continuing to raise awareness about acoustic harm in our oceans. Through our Yahoo Groups site, we offer an informational resource for various enviromental advocacy groups and
forward thinking individuals.

In August 2007, NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Service) issued a new permit for SURTASS LFA Sonar for which the public was allowed only 15 days to comment. Low Frequency Active Sonar is a dangerous technology and its use is being challenged worldwide. Evidenced by whale & porpoise deaths near areas where high intensity active sonars have been used by the US Navy and NATO - the application of this highly advanced sound technology has become vastly contentious. High intensity sonars hav been associated with massive strandings of Cetacea in Puget Sound, the Canary Islands and the Bahamas. Published results of the necropsies of the various species exposed to intense sound which in turn stranded are repeatedly making headlines. Intrique and political cover-ups were brought to the attention of federal courts as NOAA/NMFS - the agency responsible for investigating marine mammal strandings -- apparently chose to delete implicating sonar identifiers associated with a large stranding off North Carolina. More recent strandings attributed to sonar exposure are suspected off the Canary Islands.
