Background
Two large "intermodal" (rail yard) facilities have been proposed for La Porte County in northwestern Indiana. One near Pinola, just west of the city, adjacent to Norfolk Southern tracks, the other south of the city between Kingsbury and Union Mills, adjacent to the intersecting CSX and Canadian National tracks. A third small railroad CSS is also in the area (its line traverses that of the other three, which may be significant).
Intermodal facilities operate 24/7, every day of the year. The one being touted for La Porte would essentially be an inland port.
The land selected and being promoted by certain politicians and developers is pristine farmland – some of the most productive in the country, and eye-wateringly pretty. The intermodal (and subsequent development of adjunct businesses) would pave over much of that land and transform the overall character of the county from predominantly rural, to predominantly industrial – essentially eliminating the thin green line between Chicago and South Bend.
Many “deals” have been done in private, while public officials were found to have signed confidentiality agreements (subsequently after a bit of public pressure, declared null and void). This forum is a discussion area for those opposed to the project. The main opposition group has a website at www.sisoc.net where more information can be found.

Thanks. It was really neat to see them grow from these weird little dinosaur-looking things to cute fluffy little birds. I hope they come back next year.
