HO HO uH-Oh!
You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I'm telling you
why: Santarchy is coming to town!

The date is Saturday, December 20, 2008

It has been a battle of ideas, schedules, and resources, but the 20th it shall
be. I am truly excited. So close to Xmas, the city will be in FULL holiday
spirit, a wonderful background for our shenanigans.

A special benefit of the 20th is the use of a school bus and sober driver to
drag Santas around for part of the rampage, preventing a repeat of the deporable
MetroBus failure of 2007.

It would be nice if a given date in December worked for all the Santas but sadly
there is not such magical date. There never is.

So get your Santa Suit on and come join us for StL Santarchy 2008.

I’ve heard rumors of some alternate transport for late night/off the metro routes.

Lohr, are you in love? In jail? Both?  Should we start planning without you?

Imo - Using metro only really restricts where we can go – unless we do a lot of walking (which doesn’t work for some people).

Is there any way to keep the craw within the metro link train route?
At the end of the night we were stuck and out of luck at the Grove last
year. The snow was festive but the joy was long gone when the busses
stoped becouse of it.

what a bummer, I thought the date had been voted on..what was the final verdict?  Is the 20th the date that got the most votes?  Too bad, don't know if Jim and I will be able to make it...but like you said, you can't please everyone!

Why was there voting if the date is chosen based on the availability of a bus and/or other reasons?

I guess the electoral college vote was different than the popular vote.

If we can swap custody weekend we will make the 20th,

otherwise we might just stage a rogue Santa outing on the 13th (I’ve already bought my gifts).

Will one bus be enough?  How will we know, Santas do not typically RSVP.  Wouldn't want to have to leave Santas behind.  :o(

I'm a fan of the MetroLink route personally.  It seemed to work out fine 2 years ago and I don't recall having to walk super far then.  The CWE walk was probably the longest back from Llywellen's but we took the bus there.  Could do that again, plan on taking the bus to Llywellen's then walking down Euclid on the way back, handing out treats to naughty boys and girls, with the Rosie's stop in between.  In case of inclement weather, maybe have a substitute bar, say Tom's instead of Llywellen's, which is very close to the MetroLink stop, so we are not relying on the bus.

True.  But I think that the only 'long haul' on a bus was the downtown to Soulard route.  Other than that, just some minor bus rides, nothing that couldn't be walked if need be or couldn't be substituted w/ another bar.  Short hops on the bus are OK, it just potentially causes problems when there's a lot of many long trips relying on the Metro bus like last year.

Another con of taking a school bus versus Metrolink/short Metro bus hops, is there are fewer opportunities to hand out gifts and interract w/ boys and girls - boys and girls that wait all year long hoping to see Santas join them on their Metro ride or marching through their 'hood!  :o)

While I don't want to turn the Santarchy date into some big
controversial topic, I am going to chime in here with my two cents.

From what I have read, the only real reasons why the 20th is the
current date was the availability of the school bus for private
transportation and the pending road construction. While I agree that
the use of public transportation has been problematic in the past,
especially later at night, it has also always been one of the best
parts of Santarchy. Riding the bus or Metro in full regalia at various
stages of inebriation throughout the day was always an adventure.
Waiting at the various stops always made time for fun, clandestine
flask use, great timing for a quick smoke, and excellent opportunities
to interact with the public. Yes the school bus would be "convenient,"
but would it really be Santarchy without the ritual of public
transportation?

Regarding the road construction information that was posted earlier
using this link as a reference:

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/special/navigatinghighway40.nsf/story/980C\
E0A91021FA5B8625739A0022B9DB?OpenDocument
The story at the link is from 2007... If I am misreading and there is
actually going to be construction at Kingshighway this year...so be
it. That phase of the Hwy 40 rebuild is starting whether we like it or
not, and will still be occurring on the 20th as well, I'd assume.

Now, we all know that Santarchy is actually a two day event...one day
to be Santa, and one day to sleep it off. With the date being set on
the 20th, Sunday the 21st is gone as well....that really doesn't leave
much time for last minute Christmas preparations. Many extended
families gather together the weekend before Christmas, allowing
smaller, immediate family gatherings on Christmas eve and Christmas
day. If one were planning to travel over the holidays, the
weekend/week before is probably when most people would be planning to
leave. Then there is the issue of those that work in retail. Having
been in that unenviable position myself in the past, I can attest that
the weekend/week before Christmas is a time that is nearly impossible
to take off of work, and while at work, you had better not be hungover
because its going to be hell if you are.

Lastly, I would like to also mention that many workplaces tend to hold
their holiday parties the Saturday before Christmas. I know that mine
does, as well as Cheryl's. I know that we have several school and
workplace acquaintances that are excited about the prospect of their
first Santarchy, that would likely be unable to attend on the 20th.
While it would be theoretically possible to do multiple events, it
would mean being unable to enjoy Santarchy the way it should be enjoyed.

If there are reasons for choosing the 20th over the 13th that I am
unaware of, I am sorry. I can only base this argument on what I have
read on this board. Yes, my reasons for writing this are entirely
selfish- I want Cheryl and I to be able to go to Santarchy 2008, all
day, all night, the full, interactive, inebriated experience. I want
to see all of my Santarchy friends decked out in their red and white
finery, wreaking havoc across the countryside. It saddens me to think
that I may not get to sing refrains of the never ending "You Better
Watch Out!" or hear the infamout cry of "HO HO HO, SANTA'S GOTTA GO!"
If the 20th remains the chosen date, then I am afraid that this sad
eventuality will come to pass.

Enough ranting from me for now, sorry for the length,
Kung-Fu-Rabbit

I agree, what about parking the bus at a way point where public
transport becomes flaky, like union station, from there the bus could
take us to south grand then the grove then soulard or some other mash
up

How is this relevant?

That story is from 2007, not 2008.

There are no announcements regarding December closures on the I-64
website.

As long as the date is set, I can arrange my schedule, I think. I will make sure
tomorrow. In
fact, with the date being so late, I'm thinking that our favorite HoHoHo (Tanya)
may be able
to join us, as well as some Naughty Elves! I *love* the bus idea, let me know if
it costs us
anything. We will cheerfully pitch in!

For Santas not available on the 20th, may I humbly suggest a secondary event?

My Steampunk group is planning a caroling adventure. We're going to dress in our
SteamPunk Finery and run around like Dickensian Carolers. We're still planning
our route, but
the two front runners are Downtown St. Charles and the Washington
District/Landing.

We're planning to carol our way from bar to bar (and probably some of the
restaurants, too)
to eat, drink, sing, and be merry. Punked-up carols may be a part of this
adventure.

If you're interested in Steampunk in the St. Louis area, I recommend joining our
yahoogroup.

I posted the travel advisory for those who drive to the santarchy venues rather than take public transit, and to be aware of it in planning bus routes.

It was not intended to sway the date.  Sorry it was outdated.  Maybe THE santa will bring me new tri-focals.

And I speculated the choice of the 20th may have been selected to accommodate the bus – I’m pretty sure there were many reasons.

Some of them probably valid (ouch – mostly kidding, but a little unhappy).  The late date still makes it a deal stopper for many santas..

I don’t think the bus is intended to replace public transit, but to enable late night transportation with out waiting on buses that are on/off an hourly schedule.

So there will still be plenty of mass transit interaction early in the day when shoppers and kids will be co-riders.

My concerns with the bus would be the possibility of having more santas than will squeeze on.  But with the choice of the 20th, I don’t think that will be an issue.

We are trying to make the official date, but if we can not make certain arrangements, we will not be in attendance for 2008.

I don’t want to see a split of santarchy into 2 dates.  But rather than be archy-less, I may have to do a small alt-archy with friends on the previous weekend.

No matter what we each decide to do, I ho-ho-hope everyone has a truly magical holiday.

- this santa don’t need no padding.

I am fine with either date & the bus thing sounds really fun- I've never done a pub crawl with a bus...in past Santarchys I always rode around with Bapi as taxi driver -haha!
I would like to suggest a stop though...I heard that the Cabin Inn the City @ City Museum is open again. I remember my first Santarchy- I think 2004 (?) & it was really cool hanging around the fire pit!

yes, Yes, YES!  I mean, HO, HO, HO!  I agree, and with the same tone and intent.  Although I think I’m one of the lucky ones, because I can at least make it, but will be on my own – God only knows what will become of me.  Ho, ho, uh-oh!

If anarchy was easy, everyone would be doing it-uhm, so to speak.  But what about all those good (and bad) little boys and girls that might not get a visit from santa?  Brings a little scotch tear to my eye : (  Last year just wouldn’t have been the same without all those kids at the tattoo parlor -- and I mean that!  The only saving grace is that I know we will be going places that some can hitchhike, bus, (train), or yellow cab (santa bus) it.  I already miss everyone who can’t make it, seriously; and, I know that my drinking for you won’t make you feel any better, but it will make me miss you more…I mean, forget that I miss you more.  I hope something changes, so you all can make it.  I’m a dreamer, what can I say.  The sled must go on…

Subject: [stlouis_santarchy] Santarchy Date....(a long missive)

Regarding the road construction information that was posted earlier
using this link as a reference:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/special/navigatinghighway40.nsf/story/980CE0A91021FA5B8625739A0022B9DB?OpenDocument

Enough ranting from me for now, sorry for the length,
Kung-Fu-Rabbit

this, I would make the assumption that they are indeed still open.

Yes, Velvet mentioned earlier in this huge volley of  emails going back in forth that they are indeed open Wednesday-Saturdays still.. Just under different ownership I believe (the museum itself owns it now if I remember what she said correctly)..

I would prefer staying on or close to the metro train route. If this
Santa has a little elf emergency he might have to head back
to the north pole. This Santa get lost easily.

It did put a new spin on things when we all needed to huddle waiting
for the ghost bus but it was great fun when Super Dave Santa saved us
all! I definitely want to keep The Grove on the route bcs it was the
highlight of the night. The secret santa costume contest Novaks put on
for us and then hitting our burner stomping grounds at Atomic was a
blast. To this day, the owner still says it was the best party of all
year. I say we just make sure we have a plan B for transportation in
case the bus is late again. Maybe we could see if Dave would bring out
the school bus and we offer him gratuity for gas...

Hey guys just joined. I want to put in my two cents here if I may. The consencous for the list may be the 13th. The problem is that many close friends of Lohr are not on here and are calling for the 20th. I am indifferent except that I really want one particular person to be able to go and she graduates on the 13th. She and I put the bug out for the 20th already in August. Just so you know a little of the other issues going on. :)

sounds like you should bring santa supervision (sober-ish friend with a sense of direction),
along with enough cab money to get you back to the metro link.

throw a change of drawers in your santa sack for those elf emergencies.

I would prefer staying on or close to the metro train route. If this
Santa has a little elf emergency he might have to head back
to the north pole. This Santa get lost easily.

I had heard that as well, but Velvet posted on the Gateway Burners list
yesterday that in fact, the Cabin Inn is open and hopping.

Yes, Velvet mentioned earlier in this huge volley of  emails going back in forth that they are indeed open Wednesday-Saturdays still.. Just under different ownership I believe (the museum itself owns it now if I remember what she said correctly)..

I think that my sources may have been incorrect on this one, the cabin
has a website, www.cabin-inn. com
and they have music on the schedule for the upcoming weeks. Judging by
this, I would make the assumption that they are indeed still open.
Sorry for the incorrect information that I earlier posted.

40/64 will be closed from kingshighway - 170 starting monday 12/15.
this could cause some intersting traffic patterns, so you may want/need to plan alternate car routes.
