GGF Pinchas SZTERN b. ~1880 Tchernavicz, Poland (now Chernovtsky,
Ukraine). Tailor. Immigrated to NY 1910 with a friend named Abe. In
NY, became Philip STERN; d. 1955; buried in Beth David on LI.

His wife/my GGM Rachel/Rachela WINOGRAD b. Wysokie-Litovsk (now
Vysokoye, BEL); married Pinchas SZTERN and they remained in
Wysokie-Litovsk, where my GM Fejgel/Feygel SZTERN was born. Rachel and
my GM arrived in NY from Wysokie-Lit. in 1921 and GM went by the name
Fannie STERN soon afterward. Rachel had one brother, a teacher and
hunchback named Israel WINOGRAD (m. Malka), who did not immigrate from
Wysokie-Litovsk AFAIK. We last had news of Israel and Malka ca. 1938.

Pinchas had two brothers, Samuel and Nuchim. In NY the latter became
Sam STEIN (m. Lena SITRIN; three children) and Nathan STEIN (m. ?;
daughter ?; son Jerome).

Pinchas, Samuel, and Nuchim's parents were Chasha/Rose/Jessie and
"Shraga Feivel"/Abraham SZTERN or STERN. My GGGF Shraga Feivel SZTERN
or STERN came to the U.S. late in life and lived with Pinchas' brother
Sam and Sam's wife Lena for a while. He died in NY sometime after 1910.
Don't think his wife came over. Shraga Feivel/Abraham SZTERN/STERN was
a junkman (in the old country, I'm guessing) and had at least one
brother. We think the brother's wife's name was Rose. Shraga
Feivel/Abraham and his brother were probably born ca. 1850-1864.

If you know more about my GGGparents, Shraga Feivel and Chasha/Jessie or
other of their relatives, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

Hello GerSig,
I need your help.
I am searching for Israel STERN and his family, who emigrated to the
United States some time between 1852 and 1857.
Now I found a record of the United States Census of 1880 , where a
Israel STERN appears, who might be the one, I am looking for.

This is what I found in the record:

Israel STERN, born 1824 in Germany (birthdate matches)
Hannah STERN, born 1842 in Germany (name of his wife is different, but
perhaps his 1st wife died.)
children:
Kauffman STERN, born 1854 in Germany (name of son matches; he also is
to old to be Hannahs son)
Isabelle STERN born 1861, Ohio
Josephine STERN born 1864, Indiana
Chas STERN born 1868, Ohio
Louis STERN born 1874, Ohio
Eddie STERN born 1877, Ohio

In 1880 the family lived in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio

This is what I know about "my" Israel STERN:

Israel STERN, born February- 10-1824 in Stammheim/ Hesse
son of Kaufmann and Jachet STERN

married Betta Meier (Meyer) born 1834 in Altenstadt/Hesse
children: Kaufmann, born 1853 in Altenstadt - Saara, born 1857 in Altenstadt

Israel STERN probably was a butcher

about his emigration I have two contradictory informations:
1. He and his family emigrated in 1852
2. They moved away in 1857

Does anybody of you know something about this STERN family or is
related to them?
Or can help me to find out more about the family in Cinncinati?
I will be grateful for any advice or information. Kind regards,

Johanna Voss Florstadt /Hesse, Germany

Searching for: STERN, CASSEL, BECKER, HESSENBERGER, KAHN, REISS and
others from Stammheim and Staden /Hesse
I am working on a publication about the Jewish families of this two villages.

My family has heard for years rumors of my Great,Great Grandmother
Maria Stern; being Jewish. Her first name was spelled Maria but from
what I have learned through family, it was pronouced Mariah. She would
have been born in the late 1700's circa 1798 died before 1880 Not sure
if she was born in America. Her father's name was William Stern Sr. He
was residing in Sullivan county,Tn also at the time of his death
according to a deed. (Not sure of the date)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Could you give more details.

My STERNs are from Zloczow, Galitzia. They are Levi's. Related
family names are HASS/HAAS, KALB/KOHL, SCHWARTZ and PARNES. I think
that it is the STERNs of these families who are related to the
mother of the actor Joseph Schildkraut.

Does any one have detailed family trees?

Hi. I just joined the list and am hoping someone can provide some help
learning more about my great great grandfather. His name was Aron
Stern, and he was a rabbi in Chicago (North Wood Street). He was
originally Hungarian, I believe, although a couple records say German.
He immigrated to Chicago around 1884 with his wife Esther (Gross) and
children Amalia (1875), Jerome (1877), Sam (1879) and Max (1881). They
had daughters Mary (1884 in Michigan) and Rose (1886 in Chicago). Aron
died in 1914.

I believe he became a rabbi while he was in Chicago, not in the old
country. But I have been unable to find out where exactly he was from,
and I have not been able to trace his descendents to anyone still
living.

Does anyone have any suggestions for learning more about his history,
or current family members?

Thanks!

Interesting! I have been hunting a Jacob Stern who had a factory in Chicago and
who is said to have defied the Mafia in the 20's. Came from Poland tho' so
unlikely to be related!

My great great grandmother, Esther Stern, was buried in Congregation
Austrian-Galician in Forest Park Cemetery in Chicago. Very close to her was
buried Zisel Stern. I have no idea who Zisel Stern was, so I got her death
certificate. She died in 1939 and was born about 1888 in Slavita, Russia.
She was married to Joseph Stern, who died before her. I don't know who he
is either, but since Zisel was buried so close I have to assume she was
related somehow.

Is anyone familiar with Joseph and Zisel? I can't find anything about them

I just got some new documents on my Aaron STERN born in 1830 Kandava
Latvia died in 1904 Wash. DC. This guy is interesting to me because
he is a civil war vet who spent his life in US government employ.

New info is that he naturalized in St. Louis MO in 1863.

After staring at this list for a while another possibility hit me.
My relative was named Menachem Joseph STERN. Perhaps he couldnt
commit or the canvasser screwed up. Perhaps he switched from Joseph
to Menachem and or used both names at the same time.

This guy was from Europe and came ashore in 1870's? This is probably
the only Menachem listing in the country at this time;maybe an odd
Hebrew name was too much. Then again he was a notary so he must have
known English.

Hi,

I just joined this group, and wanted to introduce myself. I searched the past
archives and
realized that one of my messages from gersig a few years ago had been reposted
here,
but I've found some more information since then.

The earliest STERN ancester I know of is Etta STERN. According to my
grandmother, that
was her maiden name and her married name. Etta's daughter, Rosa STERN, was born
in
Bruckenau. Rosa married Asher STERN, who was born in Flieden. They had four
children:
Herman STERN; Regina STERN, born 1879 in Flieden, who married Siegmund KULP from
Romsthal (they were my great-grandparents); Adelheid STERN, born about 1888 in
Flieden, who married Gedeon KATZMANN, who was from either Schondra or Bruckenau;
and Marcus STERN.

Herman STERN had two children, Arthur and Ella.

Regina STERN and Siegmund KULP had two daughters, Jenny and Erna, both born in
Aschaffenburg.

Adelheid STERN and Gedeon KATZMANN had three children: Rita KATZMANN, born
around
1921 in Flieden; Alex KATZMANN, born around 1924 in Wurtzburg; and Paul
KATZMANN,
born around 1925 in Frankfurt.

Herman's son Arthur told me that Marcus was in a concentration camp, then was
liberated, and died of pneumonia on the ship on the way to America.

Also, like many of you, I've been told that we are somehow related to Carl
Laemmle. I
know that he's listed as the sponsor on several of my ancestor's immigration
records, and
I've seen a few cards from the Laemmle family in my grandmother's scrapbooks.

Does this fit in with anybody else's information?

Thanks,
Hillary Einziger

My STERN born 1830 t0 35 is playing games with me. In his documents
he constantly changes his home country from Russia to Germany to
Poland to Prussia etc. This is perfectly acceptable to me.

What drives me crazy is that he changed the city of birth along the
way too. When he first arrives in nyc around 1850 he lists his
birthplace as Koningsberg. Around 1900 he decides that he was born in
Kandava Latvia. Why on earth would he do that?

Any ideas?

Hi all,
I just joined this email list; I am Daniel Stern and I am researching the Stern
family from Fulda, Germany and Lutter Germany (so far). I have been doing
family research for some 20 or so years and have made little headway until
recently. If anyone is also researching Sterns from Fulda or Lutter I would
love to hear from you. If you have any questions for me, ask away!
Sincerely,
Daniel

While visiting my parents this past week, I found some genealogy notes
that I took while my grandmother was still alive. I knew that we were
related to Recha Stern from Flieden who married Carl Laemmle, but no
one still alive could remember how. According to the notes I found,
Recha (Regina)'s father was Loeb Stern (this agrees with some
documents I've found on her brothers, Julius and Abraham), and Loeb
Stern's brother, Asher Stern, was my great-great-grandfather.

So, putting together all that I've found, it seems that there were at
least three brothers in that STERN family: Loeb, Asher, and Samuel.
It seems likely that Loeb is the one mentioned at
http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/flieden_synagoge.htm , having a golden
anniversary in 1924 with wife Malchen geb. Herzberger. Their children
were Recha (Regina), Anna, Abraham, Julius, and maybe some others.

Asher married Rosa STERN, who I think was from Bad Bruckenau. Their
children were Regina, Markus, Adelheid, and Herman.

Samuel came to the US and managed Continental Clothing in the midwest.

I know that there are a few other people on this list researching this
same family. Does this agree with what you've found? Do you have
anything else to add?

Thanks,
Hillary Einziger

Dear Ms. Einziger

I don't recognize the names you mentioned in your email. I'm very sorry but I
don't therefore, have any information about them.

I wish you success in your search.

I am a new member and am looking for any information on the family of
my grandfather. He emigrated to the US and was naturalized on 6-1-1901
which I believe means he came here on or before June, 1896. He entered
the country at Philadelphia, PA. His father owned a cigar factory in
Hamburg. He had several brothers and sisters some of whom came to the
US and others went to Argentina. Any information would be
appreciated. Regards, Barry

Barry, if you provided names it might make it easier to recognize people. It
is easy to obtain a copy of the natur. in Phila. LDS just placed Phila.

Hello All,

When I was eleven or twelve, I found out that my biological father was
named Stern. I met him just once then and never did again. A man
named Bannister had adopted me at birth hence my surname is not Stern.

If any of you can supply any information based on the following, I
would be most grateful. These are the individuals in my direct
paternal bloodline. Some of you are most likely cousins--and not very
distant cousins at that.

Father:
  Harold "Orrie" Stern, DDS
  Born 1896, Cleveland, Ohio
Graduated Western Reserve School of Dentistry 1916 or 1917
  Died 1976, Cleveland, Ohio
Practiced dentistry on East 55th St, Cleveland until shortly before
  death

His Father (My grandfather):
  Samuel C Stern
  Born January 4,1859, Csurgo, Hungary
Emigrated to US in 1876, Departed Hamburg on "The Spain". Settled
  in Cleveland

His Mother (My grandmother):
  Mary Kraus
  Born in Bohemia

Dr Stern had two older brothers whose names I do not know.

Can you help?

Thanks for your efforts.
