According to sparse family records and oral heritage, my great-grandfather
Noah Stern was a shochet from Poland, born c. 1861, who married
Sarah-Shoshana Danzig in her native Lithuania in the late 1880s, fathered two
daughters, and left for South Africa. He became a trader in Francistown (now
Botswana). When his wife and children came to join him around 1890-91, she
died on the train journey somewhere in South Africa, apparently after having
stopped to visit her brother, who was a lawyer living between Cape Town and
Johannesburg. Noah was eventually reunited with the children, who lived in
southern Africa until they were about 17 years old, at which age they chose
to stay in England when he brought them there on provisioning trips. (The
daughters' descendants live mainly in the UK or US. Some appear in Chaim
Freedman's book on the Vilna Gaon.) Noah himself remarried, fathered other
children, and died in Port Elizabeth in 1947.

I would appreciate any additional information that anyone may be able to give
me on Noah and his Stern descendants, or on South African Danzigs who may be
related to Sarah-Shoshana through her brother. I would also appreciate any
guidance on the most effective ways to locate official documentation for Noah
and Sarah-Shoshana. I have looked at the SASIG resource guides on-line, so I
could probably figure it all out, but I would appreciate it very much if
someone could be kind enough to steer me in the right direction.

Sorry, Dorothy,
I don't think so. My Sterns come from what is now Ukraine--my father
called it Ruthenia--languages spoken were Ukrainian, Ruthenian, Polish,
Yiddish, and German--depending on ethnicity and political control. As
far as we know my dad was the first Stern to come to the US directly from
Europe.

No connection that I can see. You need to define Poland---there was no
such entity in 1861.

Help, please!

I am looking for a LANG/LANGE family from Philadelphia: Jacob Lang,
Jacob W. Lang, Louis Lang, and Isaac M. Lang. The name is spelled both
ways in city directories from Philadelphia from 1879 on.

From about 1882 to 1896 Louis LANG, along with Moses STERN and Samuel
M. MAYER, was affiliated with Lang, Bernheimer & Co., a wholesale liquor
business.

If you have any information about this family or their descendants,
please let me know. Thank you,

Dear Milton,

I would be very interested in what you find about Moses Stern and also in the
names of merchants who supposedly lived in Cincinnati. I'm really chasing
down
Jacob Lang who was married to Ida Stern from Cincinnati. Her father was
Samuel
Stern, b May 1819, d 10/23/83. He at one point owned Sterling Glass co, had
something to do with the Cincinnati Reds and N.Y. broadway shows?

The 1880 Ohio Census lists the following:

Isaac Stern
Jacob Stern
Bernhard Stern
Raphel Stern
Charles Stern

1881 Cincinnati City Directory has these Sterns:

David, salesman, 266 Richmond
Isaac L., clerk, 266 Richmond
Jacob (Straus & Stern), 148 Richmond
Bernhard (Stern, Mayer & Co), 99 W. 8th
Raphael, travel agent, 266 Richmond
Charles (L. Strauss & Co.), 9th & Mound

What do you have about Moses Stern or his connections to the Cincinnati
Sternsd?

I have recently received some information on writer James STERN descended
from the STERN family of Bingen, Soest and Frankfurt am Main. This was
obtained from a non family tree researcher looking into the life of Sydney
James STERN, Lord Wandsworth (1844-1912), part of a branch which
settled in England.

If anyone is interested in receiving information about this banking family
please
contact me privately.

Alice,

Much as it would delight me, there's no way that I could possibly lay claim
to a relationship with the likes of Lord Wandsworth. Maybe that's just as
well: as I recall, that's a prison with a less than salubrious repution. The
STERN clan of which I am a member is known, certainly up to the death of
Sidney James in 1912.

However, if this august STERN's family should happen to be descended not only
from Bingen, but also from the BINGEN family, then I will be happy to admit
him to my mother's family; that is, if they're the right BINGENs. And then
only to about fifth or sixth cousinhood, or higher.

Best,

-=David=-

Yes, part of my family changed their name from STERN to STARR probably in
either Louisville, Kentucky or Portsmouth, Ohio. You can see them on my
genealogy site at
http://members.tripod.co.uk/AliceJosephs/INDEX.HTM

I think it was quite a common name change both of Jewish and non Jewish
families.

During the course of my research, I have collected information
and e-mail addresses for various Jewish STERN families which I found
not to be connected to my own. The information covers Germany,
former Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Russian continent,
Poland and Romania.

If any STERN researchers wish to look through the information

I am looking for descendent of an "M STERN" who was born 1815/20 in the
Hesse-Darmstadt area of Germany. He married Geatil BILLSTEIN of
Ruelfenrod, Hesse-Darmstadt around 1847. I only know of two sons; Loeb
(Leopold) and Alexander. I believe that these two offspring immigrated to
the mid west.... possibly Wisconsin or Illinois. They were working for an
uncle in Neenah, Wisconsin in 1870. After that time I have lost any traces
of them.

I also know that Leopold (born 1846) was married to Johanette (Jennie)
Froehlich of Ulrichstein. They had children; Gertrude, Bessie, Flora and
Maurice.

I have several STERN'S on my tree that I wonder if anyone can connect
to
theirs. They are:

Abraham STERN who married Gutchen-Jette FREUDENBERG. She was born
1835.
Her parents were: Simon FREUDENBERG and Rachel VOGELSANG.

Arthur STERN, born in Rodesheim v.d. Hohe, Germany on March 26, 1874.
His wife was Stella SCHUSTER, born August 13, 1887 in Essen, Germany.
Her
parents were Bernhard SCHUSTER and Nettchen BUSCHHOFF.

Their children were: Hilda STERN, born February 7, 1915 in Berlin
Marriane STERN, born March 14, 1919 in Berlin
Zoli STERN BORN January 21, 1924, in Munka, Czechoslovakia. died
August
25, 1958, in Albany, New York. His wife was Marlis GUMPEL, born April
3,
1935, in Koln/Rhineland, Germany. Her parents were Oskar GUMPEL and
Johanna KAUFMANN.
Their child is: Michael L. STERN, born November 10, 1960

I would like to hear from anyone who may have any information on
the above.

Since I haven't posted this in ages, is anyone out there researching the
family of the Nobelist Otto STERN? One of my cousins [on another side]
knew him as a child & he was regarded as a distant relative. I'd like to
learn the precise connection.

I've already followed up all the easy leads.
