x I am looking for a woman named Bertha STERNIN MEERSON who lived in

My father's mother's father was named Ziv from Lithuanai. The only
>difference is based on marriage records, she was from the town of
>Raseiniai. Her father was named Mendle (Ziw) Siv. Considering how close
>Kelme was to Raseiniai is there a connection here. My grandmother's

I have been checking out some of the ziv list on onelist. What information
do you have for me as far as the Ziv family famous rabbi.

I am researching my Stern family from Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse in Hessen.
My family are descended from Gottfried Stern circa 1784-1838 who married
Nannchen Hochschild circa 1787-1857.
He had seven children, four boys. Salomon 1810-1880 who married Jette
Maierfeld circa 1813-1886 and whose children I do not know, Feist (my great
great grandfather) 1812-1889, Mendel 1815-? and Heimann 1817-1900.
Feist - in respect of two of his children, Rosa and my Leopold -and Heimann
(who became a Henry Starr) and went to Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky are the
only lines I know.
Gottfried's and Nannchen's girls were Mameth 1820-?, Guthal 1823-? and Hindle
1825-?.
Feist had lived up to his name and married two wives (not both at the same
time, I hasten to add) and had at least 11 children.
From the first marriage to Jette Weis (1812 or 1815-1849) there were four
children: Gottfried born and died 1844, Eva born and died 1845, (poor woman!),
An Unknown born? died 1848 and Jette 1849-?
From my great great grandmother Jeanette Maierfeld circa 1823-1878, there was:
Moses 1850-? Probably emigrated to New York 1867 (there may have been a less
"religious" version of the name that he used)
Abraham 1853-?
Mina 1855-? who married a Moses Schwarzschild from Massenheim near Frankfurt
am Main.
Malchen 1857-?
Anna 1859-?
Rosa 1860-1933
and FINALLY
my great grandfather Leopold 1863-1901.
Any names sound familiar?

Researching: GOTTSCHALK from N. Germany (Hannover); MOLLING from anywhere
(Hannover); KRAKAUER from Posen, Breslau, Berlin, Landau am Pfalz; STERN
from Soest, ROTHSCHILD from Stadtoldendorf; MAYER and HEUMANN from
Billigheim and Hoffenheim.
I have just started researching my father's father's family. My grandfather
was Hugo Stern, born March 10 (or 11) 1879. He always claimed that he was
born in Heilbronn, Germany to a family with 6 0r 7 siblings. His younger
brother, Emil, came to the US later than 1904. My grandfather came in 1904
and became a naturalized citizen in 1912. My father doesn't know the names of
any of his other uncles or aunts nor the names of his grandparents (paternal).
I was told during the summer of 1972 when I visited my father's second cousin
Louis Blum in Zurich, that Hugo just picked up and left one day (we assume
from Heilbronn) while he was working in the "family business" as some sort of
salesman. The next thing they knew he was in Chicago. How he wound up in NYC
is a mystery. My aunt Mina was born in 1910 so my paternal grandparents
married sometime between 1904 and 1910. I haven't gotten around to getting
the marriage records from NYC yet.
This is all I know. I even have some questions about the accuracy of the
"facts". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Hal. I do not recognize the name. Hugo. My family was from Fleiden and
Hintersteinau. I do not know how close that is to Heilbronn. If I come accross
any information in my searches that may help you, I will let you know. Good
luck. Andy Stern
Since finding a relation, Jack Starr, in Virginia, I've decided to try and do

So here goes!

No I wish I did. I will try to see if any of my older relatives know. Also,
when I find out where she is buried maybe there will be at least a middle
initial on her grave. By the way, thank you for the "Ask Jeves" site. I never

Dear Andy,
I really don't know because my family traces back to Henry (Heimann) Starr
(Stern). From my records Malchen's father was Feist who was Henry's brother.
If you are interested in that side of the family I suggest you contact Alice
Josephs at AliceJose@.... She provided me with the information I have on
Feist's family linage and she is actively searching for his descendents.
Good Luck Jack

Hello,
I have three people who are called Stern in my Freudenthal-Genealogy.
One of them is a great grandmother of me.
1. Babette Stern born in Tann (near Fulda, germany). She lived from
1822 till 1898. She was married with Benjamin Freudenthal (born 1820,
Tann and died 1904 Tann) they had 4 childern Viola, Ella, Isak and Eva
Freudenthal.
2. Loeb Stern married with Madel Goldsmidt (born +/- 1800) She was
born in Tann but they lived in Hilders. I don't know if they had have
childern.
And then there was my great grandmother Jette Stern who was born in
Langsfeld and lived after her marriage in Tann She died in 1875 She
was married with Hirsch Freudenthal and they had 6 children
Hoely(Henry) Karoline, Isak, Rieckchen, Benjamin and Thekla
Freudenthal. Who knows more about these people? Thanks

Hello Monica,
This is very interesting. My great-great-great-grandmother was Jettchen
Stern, born in Stadt Lengsfeld in 1755, married Meier Loebenstein, and
went to live in Datterode or Sontra. I have been unable to find out
anything
more about her. This is frustrating in the extreme, because one of her
sons was named Suesskind, which suggests a descent from Suesskind
Stern of Soest, whose family tree has been traced to the 1300s.
There must surely be a connection between my Jettchen and your Jette.
Regards,
Leonard Loebenstein

Congratulations, hope some of your good luck rubs off on me (less selfishly,
on us all!)!!

In the absence of additional information, this could equally well suggest
descent from S"uesskind (Schneur) "zum Stern" in the ghetto at Frankfurt/M.
His sons transferred the sign of their father's dwelling to their surname
STERN. Alexander Dietz, in his "Stammbuch der Frankfurter Juden", traces the
family back to 1530 on p. 296.
I have seen English translation at Leo Baeck Inst in NY, and am sure many
other libries hold copies of the Ger. orig. or the Engl. transl.
My STERN was a name adopted in 1808 in Rheydt, near D"usseldorf. All male-
line descendants of the original Heinrich STERN are known, unless he had [an]
other son[s] that ha[s][ve] not yet cropped up.
Hope this gives you fodder for further research.

I would like to chime in and add something to David Stern's comment about
Suesskind Stern, and Dietz's "Stammbuch der Frankfurter Juden". The
information about the generations prior to Suesskind Stern is not very
accurate. I have gone to the Leo Baeck Institute in NYC and traced the
ancestrty of Suesskind back to 1349 where 2 generations of the family
perished on the same day.
Dietz has geneations going from Samuel Haas ----->Beer Haas (?----1628,
married 1590) ---->Samuel Bing ( ? - 1657, married 1619) -----> Joseph
Jacob Bing (? - 1643) -----> Suesskind Stern (1610 - 1686). If Dietz is to
be believed, then Suesskind was born 9 years before his grandfather was
married.
When it comes to Dietz, "trust with verification"
I believe that Suesskind's pedigree has been put on JGFF.

Andy,
We corresponded back in March when you told me about your great grandmother
Malchen and at that time we didn't quite know how to proceed.
This may - I stress may since I don't want to have any hopes dashed! - be a
breakthrough.
I've just had an e-mail correspondence with a descendant of Baruch Laemmle of
Laupheim who informs that Karl Laemmle married a Recha Stern from Flieden (you
did write Fleiden, but Flieden is just below Fulda).
I'm working backwards on the Laemmle/Laupheim connection. When I was young, my
grandfather, whose father was a Stern and whose mother was a Herz, told me one
of his "cousins" produced Frankenstein.
I thought he meant in Germany. In fact he was talking about Universal Pictures'
Karl Laemmle originally from Laupheim. That's the good news. The "bad news" is
that Ogden Nash once wrote, "Uncle Carl Laemmle has a very large faemmle". He
was everyone's uncle and cousin in time-honoured German fashion.
He married a woman called Recha Stern who apparently came from Flieden.
However there were Laemmles from Bretten on the Herz side, my great
grandmother's side of the family.
I have learnt it is very probable that the Herz and Stern families were already
related, which begs a question about the Laemmle family as well.
Unfortunately in time-honoured genealogical fashion I never questioned my "Opa"
about it when he was alive.
My grandfather's father, Leopold Stern, died very young, at 37 in 1901
supposedly after a family scandal. So opa never spoke much about his family on
that side.
My Grandfather's Stern family lived Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse in Hessen and
apparently some of them changed their name to Starr after arriving in America.
So in trying to find out about the Laemmles it may be that I've found something
that can help us. I know from a biography of Karl Laemmle by John Drinkwater
that Recha Stern's uncle was called Sam Stern and ran a clothing manufacturers
in Oshkosh near Chicago.
Does any of this sound familiar?
