Hi Gang,
If you're headed to Dayton this year, stop by for a visit at the new "Homebrew
Round-up" area in the North Arena. I'm planning on being there Friday and
Saturday and will bring along a couple of StationPros (both the SP-I and
SP-II)for you to inspect. Under Hamvention rules, I can't take any orders, but
I'll be happy to answer any questions.

The Homebrew Roundup is a new Hamvention feature this year, for hams to display
their latest creations. It in a block of tables (nos. 179,180,191,192,203 and
204)at the East end of the North Arena, adjacent to the loading dock area. If
I'm not at my table, I'll probably be with my buddy Jerry K8RA at his exhibit,
No. 244. CU there!

Sounds like a great idea. Or, perhaps post it in the files section of this
group.

What will be included in the "semi-kit'?

How does one "get in line" ?

Hi All,
In response to several requests, I've uploaded the pre-filled-out Mouser Order
forms for both the SP-I and SP-II to this Yahoo group. The files are in the form
of Excel Spreadsheets. To order parts, one just cuts and pastes the part numbers
and quantities into the Mouser on-line order form (at www.mouser.com)

If you're sure you want to build a StationPro, I'd advise getting a jump on the
crowd by getting your orders into Mouser early. That will minimize any problem
of having to wait for backordered parts. By the way, members of this Group will
be first in line for my "semi-kits." presently scheduled for shipping in
mid-to-late June. As a ballpark, figure about $400 total cost (my semi-kits plus
Mouser order) for an SP-I and about $600 for an SP-II.

Hi all,
Two items: First, I'm headed off to Dayton tonight, so be sure and hunt me down
at the Homebrew Roundup. I'll have both the SP-I and SP-II set up and operating
for inspection, and I'll also be monitoring 145.670 MHz if I'm in the flea
market.

Second, I heard from the technical editor of QST that their publication schedule
has slipped a bit and my StationPro article will now appear in the August issue
(which comes out in mid-July). Evidently, with everybody at QST gearing up for
Dayton, their production people have fallen behind in getting the drawings
finished. Rather than make everybody wait, however, I'll plan on going public
with my StationPro website around July 1, or possibly earlier.

Hi all, I'm back from Dayton and greatly enjoyed demoing my StationPros in the
new "Homebrew Roundup" area. It was fun to attach faces to some of the hams who
have followed these updates. The weather was great, though attendance was
definitely lower than, say, ten years ago. (This is a topic for another day, but
Hara Arena has become so shabby, with inconvenient parking, and cutbacks in
airline scheduling, that many hams are reluctant to make the trip. I so wish
D.A.R.A. would move the Hamvention to the nearby Ohio Fairgrounds in Columbus,
which has great facilities, excellent nearby hotels and restaurants, easy
accessibility, etc. Until they do, are at least move the Hamvention to more
accomodating facilities, I think attendance will continue to dwindle.) I posted
a couple of photos on the StationPro update page on my website of Yours Truly
chatting with friends Tom Salvetti KC3NF, my enclosure guy at Ten-Tec, and Joel
Hallas W1ZR, who is QST's technical editor and who assures me my StationPro
article is on track for this August's issue. Both are great hams and strong
supporters of the amateur community.

I had about a half dozen visitors ask if the StationPro was suitable for SO2R
contesters. I'm not very knowledgable about SO2R, but I believe the answer is
no, since SO2R requires the ability to monitor two frequencies at once, with
separate antennas. It wouldn't be hard to design that capability into a
StationPro-like device, but that would be a rather involved project. Maybe for a
future date....

Jim - glad you enjoyed Dayton, hope to be able to go in the future now that I am retiring. When are you going to let me purchase one of your kits for the deluxe versions?  May be the only thing that keeps me off the streets at night:-). Should have the balance of the backordered parts from Mouser by mid / late June.

How do you like the K-3?  Was thinking about getting one - was actually debating with myself between the K-3 and Icom 7700.  Any comments on comparison?

Many thanks

When checking-in the parts I ordered from Mouser for my Station Pro II I discovered I had not ordered  a  serial decoder interface made by Seetron Electronics because there was not a Mouser part number listed for the item.  (Part #  PIC16C54 LCD) I tried cross referenceing the Seetron's part number without success. That isn't to say the part is not avaliable from Mouser, I just didn't find a suitable crossreference. The interface is avaliable  directly from Seetron Electronics, Jameco, Reynolds Electronics and JDR Microdevices. Mouser is not listed as as distributior on Seetrons web site.

Like many others who have ordered ordered parts in anticipation of the release of the Station Pro II the few parts Mouser backordered will be shipped by mid June. The only part still in limbo  are 2 RCA jacks (part # 161-4219E). Anyone who has a source for these parts please send me a email or post the information on the group.

Hi Jim,

I didn’t realize the serial decoder IC was on the Mouser parts list. It shouldn’t be there, because  I’m providing one of the ICs with each of my “semi-kits.”  I’m doing this because Mouser doesn’t stock that part and I wanted to spare StationPro builders the nuisance of having to order components from more than one supplier.  I’m also supplying two 8-pin chassis mic jacks with my kits for the same reason.

Ed, be sure and check the pinout on the dual RCA jacks from Digikey (you can
download the data sheet from Digikey). I may be remembering wrong, but I vaguely
recall that those jacks may require a different PCB pattern than the Mouser RCA
jacks. I tried to specify multiple sources for as many StationPro components as
possible, but I had trouble finding duplicate sources for some of the RCA jacks.
It seems that every manufacturer's PCB-mount jacks require a unique PCB pattern.
Fortunately, they're a popular item and Mouser has many on order.

Hi Mike,

There are dozens of different styles and types of XLR chassis connectors, so it’s hard to give you a general answer that covers all types. However, I  think you can make at least one type of 3-conductor XLR jack (Mouser part no. NC3-FBH-2 @$2.75/ea) work, though I haven’t tried it.  You would have to file out the front panel hole to make the XLR jack fit, and also drill two small holes in the panel for the jack’s mounting screws. You would also have to enlarge the access hole in the printed circuit board that mounts behind the front panel. This would only be possible for the right-hand mic jack; the left hand mic jack has traces too close to the access hole for it to be enlarged.

Here’s a summary of the relevant dimensions for the Mouser connector mentioned above. The StationPro’s front panel mic jack hole is 0.625 in. diameter and would have to be enlarged to 0.866 in. The front panel circuit board mounts behind the front panel, with a clearance spacing of 0.550 in, and the diameter of the printed circuit board access hole is 0.750 in. This hole would have to be filed so the back side of the XLR jack could extend through it. Keep in mind that I haven’t tried this, and so I can’t promise you wouldn’t run into any snags.

Two other options would be to swap your XLR connector for, e.g., a common 8-pin mic connector, or perhaps a mini-XLR connector. Alternately, you could just wire up a short adaptor cable, which is what I would do.

Hope this answers your question.

73,

Jim W8ZR

Jim,  I just ordered the SP2 kit.  Since I've got a full machine shop with milling machines and lathes, I'll just machine up an adapter that will allow me to mount a standard XLR connect to the front panel, with enough stand off so I don't have to mess with the front panel circuit board.  I'll more then likely do it on my Hass CNC mill, so that way I can produce them if anyone else needs them.

Hi Gang,
This week I've been getting my purchasing and inventory-tracking system up and running, and to make sure everything is working smoothly, I'm making my SP-I and SP-II "semi-kits" temporarily available NOW for immediate shipping to all members of this group.  I only have enough kits made up for this group (about fifty), so I can't open the gate for everybody yet. However, you folks have been very patient, and many of you have already ordered parts, so I didn't want to make you wait any longer.

These semi-kits are exactly like the ones I'll be selling when my QST article comes in the August issues. The following link will take you to an order page with full kit descriptions, and also a download site where you can obtain all documentation, firmware, schematic diagrams, parts lists, etc. (No need to download the Operating and Assembly Manual, however, since a spiral bound manual is included with each kit).

Please let me know if you run into any snags, either in purchasing or assembling your StationPro, including manual typos, any unclear assembly steps, etc. I'm sure the Group also would like to read about your experiences.  Thanks very much.

Jim W8ZR

Thanks Jim, I ordered a Station ProII kit this evening. I already have most of the parts and it looks like Mouser will complete my backorder by June 15th.

Hi gang,

A couple of items: First, I received the page proofs for my QST writeup
yesterday, so it's still on track for the August issue, which should start
appearing in about a month. If you haven't ordered parts from Mouser yet, I'd
recommend you do so before the article appears in order to minimize any
backordering problems.

Second, if you're building an SP-I, be sure and check the errata sheet from the
"downloads" webpage, because I inadvertently left a 1K resistor and a 1N4005
diode off the SP-I Mouser order form. The download page now has the corrected
order form. (The SP-II order form is fine, with no omissions.)

Third, I've received several inquiries about possibly modifying the SP-II for
remote control operation. Paul W9AC has successfully modified his SP-II for
remote control over the internet and has promised to writed up his modification,
which is quite elegant. Paul found an inexpensive ($35) embedded web control
interface PCB which mounts inside the SP-II enclosure, and is connected to the
internet through a second RJ45 jack which he added to the rear panel. A very
slick job.

Fourth, a couple of hints on finding hookup wire, if you don't already some in
your junk box. The assembly manual calls for short lengths of 22AWG stranded
wire, which is the most common type. For my own SPs, I used teflon insulated
wire, which I like because the insulation doesn't melt when soldering. It's
pricey if bought new, but one can frequently find it in various colors at
hamfests or on eBay. (Multiple colors are convenient, but not necessary.)
Another source of hookup wire is to buy a length of multicolored computer ribbon
cable and peel off the strands, as needed. And yet another source is to strip
the jacket off a length of multi-conductor cable.

Lastly, I've been working on my StationPro website, and presently plan to
publish it around July 1. I'll send out a notice when it's up and running.

Thanks to all who have emailed me reporting on their kits. So far, everything
seems to be going smoothly. And of course, you're encouraged and welcome to post
your experiences and suggestions on this site.

Jim has produced one of the most exciting kits I've seen in a very long time.  I only know of two other commercial products designed for switching transceivers, but this is the first device of its kind that allows for seamless switching between multiple transceivers and external power amps.

Subject to Jim's consent, I hope to post a detailed description of the web controller within the next couple weeks.  In a nutshell, more-or-less, here are some hilights of the web integration into the StationPro II:

- Small embedded web control PCB, suitable for mounting inside the StationPro II.  Since the StationPro I uses some continuous-closure logic between two transceivers and amps, the interface would require additional logic modification to the StationPro I;

- The web controller is low-cost (USD $35) and available through Amazon.com.  This is one of the few web controllers that allow for both momentary and latching logic needed to work with the StationPro II.  An additional USD $10-$15 in parts is required to construct the logic interface board;

- Built-in secure web server through standard HTTP Port 80.  Other HTTP ports will require re-programming the web control board.  The web controller supports 8 control channels, 8 return status channels (to monitor the transceiver/amplifier state of the StationPro II), 3 ADCs, and several temperature and humidity sensors;

- No PC required at the StationPro II.  Simply connect any CAT5 Ethernet cable between the StationPro II and any open router port.  It's best to assign a static LAN port to the Web controller (e.g., 192.168.1.15), then ensure that router Port 80 is open on that LAN IP address;

- No software required.  Since the web control board is HTTP accessible, connectivity to the StationPro II from a remote location is accomplished through any web browser, and is independent of the remote PC's operating system.  So, any web browser operating under Windows, MAC, or Linux, etc. will work;

- No programming required -- unless you want to.  The basic web server interface is extremely simple in control and status monitoring and gets the job done just fine.  Those wanting customized labels, colors, etc. can re-program the web controller.  The manufacturer provides a detailed programmer's guide;

- My test controller is wired to activate the StationPro II's three transceiver positions and three amplifiers.  That takes up 6 of the 8 web control channels.  An additional channel is used to remotely power up/down the StationPro II through the added PhotoMOS device.  That leaves one extra command channel to use for another function like the "swap" or "amp tune," although these functions may not be quite as relevant for remote operation.  Still, an extra port is available to use as you wish.

- A small interface board must be constructed, consisting of five opto-couplers and a single low drop-out 9V voltage regulator.  All interface switching is solid-state, silent, and optically coupled.  At a later point, perhaps someone with the necessary PCB CAD skills can produce an interface board.  Still, the parts count is low and I suspect anyone possessing the skill to build the StationPro II can also build the interface on Vector board, Perf board, etc.;

- A PhotoMOS device is used to switch power on/off to the StationPro II.  The StationPro II can remain asleep until the PhotoMOS is activated through the web interface;

- LED "Link" and "Activity" Ethernet port indicators can be brought out to the StationPro II's rear panel to assist in network troubleshooting;

In addition to the above, Jim and I have been corresponding together on some RS232 programming options, as well as adding a set of amplifier lock-out (ALO) panel jacks for ease of interfacing to sophisticated SWR/wattmeters like the Telepost LP-100A, ArraySolutions PowerMaster and RadioCraft series of meters.  I'm sure Jim will have more on that as time moves on.

I am very appreciative of Jim for allowing me to be one of his "beta builders."  This is one truly unique and enjoyable project that can benefit most of today's stations.  As Jim indicated, it would be a good idea to get your parts order initiated now through Mouser Electronics.  I think this will be the most successful construction project ever presented in QST.

Paul, W9AC-

If you've not ordered your Mouser parts yet for either the SP-I or SP-II, please
be sure to download and use the latest order form (5/11/2010) from the website.
The new order form has a revised part number for J501, an RJ45 connector that
mounts on the RF relay PCB. The new Mouser part number for J501 is
571-6116202-1.

Here's the reason for the change. The old part number was actually a substitute
for an RJ45 connector that I initially used. Unfortunately, Mouser ran out of
stock on my initial connector and had to backorder it with a long delivery time.
I therefore specified a substitute connector. I checked the pinout of the
substitute to make sure it was the same as the original. However, I learned
yesterday (thanks to a builder) that the mounting tabs and case dimensions of
the substitute are slightly different from the original, and it doesn't fit
quite right into the PCB pattern and enclosure cutout. It can be made to work
(see below), but isn't as nice a fit as my original. Now Mouser has the initial
one back in stock (by the thousands), hence the changed part number.

If you've already ordered the wrong connector, but haven't built your kit yet,
you can use the connector by clipping off the metal side tabs (which aren't
needed). You may also have to file the enclosure cutout slightly (about.010")
along one edge so the connector will mount vertically. Alternately, I'll be
happy to send you the correct connector at no charge, if you email me. It'll
take a couple weeks, however, since I'm out of town for a week visiting family
and also have to order several of the replacement connectors. I'm sorry for the
error. I hope it's the last!

This is slightly off subject.  I went to order the new Mouser part for J501.  The website added the new part number to my Station Pro II project.  All the non-backordered parts have already been shipped to me.  If I go to checkout, it wants to charge me again for the almost $300 for the project parts in addition to the new J501 part.  If I try a different approach and order the part individually, I'm not offered the chance to check out...I suspect I have not met the minimum order requirement.

I'm guessing that others have had the same frustration.  I'd love to have insight from "Mouser pros" among you.  I'll call Mouser later this week if the web procedure remains an enigma to me.

Hi Torrey,

So far as I know, Mouser doesn’t have a minimum order requirement. That’s a big reason I prefer Mouser to Digikey. (The other reason is that Mouser’s parts search engine is much more user-friendly, in my opinion.) Don’t bother ordering a new J501.  I ordered a bunch of them yesterday and will send you one gratis when they come in. It was my fault for not checking the dimensions of the other connector more closely. I’m visiting friends in NY this coming week, and will send the connectors out as soon as I get back.

By the way, when your order arrived from Mouser, did the D-Sub (DB-25 and DB-9) connectors have jack screws attached to them?  When I ordered my connectors, they came with jack screws, but I heard today that some have come without them. If that’s Mouser’s practice now, I’ll add jack screws to the parts list. (I think Radio Shack also sells them; at least it used to.)

My comprehensive StationPro website is at last  up and running, and you can check it out by clicking  HERE  (the URL is www.w8zr.net/stationpro/ ).  I have also deactivated the  StationPro "update" page, since it is no longer needed.

 I'd very much appreciate any comments or suggestions about the new site, which you can post to the group or email me privately.  Also, please let me know if you find any  broken links, photos that don't load properly, etc.

Many thanks to all of you for serving as guinea pigs for this project.  Your comments have been invaluable in helping me iron out kinks.
