I have finished the back of my jumper. I am pretty pleased with myself.
I have taken photo's but it will be awhile before I can post them,as I
don't have a digital camera. Now to get started on the front.
Take care.
Val.

Okay, my insane commitment to knit TWO St. Brigid's for two of my
sisters (thank heavens the other two never got in on this!) is over,
finito, done, finished. It really was a lot of fun, and very
interesting to see the two different yarns work up. The lighter yarn,
still worsted, but a light worsted with mohair, went to Atlanta, and
the heavier Jaeger Shetland Aran is off to Denver tomorrow.

I think it'll be a while before I commit to doing two Starmores at the
same time again, but I did enjoy the effort. Pictures of both are
posted in my photo file here. There are two of each--either I got the
color right, or the cables showed well--but never both in one picture
for some reason.

Off to knit something simpler for the next couple of weeks.

Hi,

I've also joined in the desperate hope that someone will be prepared
to share some info on this pattern with me. I can probably work out
the pattern from the pics, but some stitch count, sizing and yarn
info would really help. I am working on the Cromarty sweater from The
Celtic Collection, which is similar, but can not get hold of a copy
of Aran Knitting. I've search the catalogues of every library in the
UK and scoured the web for a sensibly priced copy, but I really don't
have the sort of money this book is demanding. If anyone can anyone
help, please contact me. Thanks

Ania

Hi Annie,

They are truly beautiful!

However I must say that the blue one really caught my attention. The
stitch definition is perfect, and yet it looks so wonderfully soft
due to the mohair content in the yarn. It feels like you cannot look
at it without wanting to put in on immediately.

The close up on the other one's neckline is very good. Making a
neckline like that looking good is not an easy task, however you
made a really good job on that one, it looks great!

Progress on my St Brigid on slow. After finishing one side of the
front neckline I realised that I had to redo it, since the
shortcuts that I had been doing with the pattern due to the V-neck
made it look terrible. Having redone it, I'm still not happy with
it, thinking that it is to narrow over the shoulders. I'll probably
end up ripping the back as well as the front back to where I started
the decreases for the sleeves and then recalculate the pattern in
order to make it 1-1½ inch wider over the shoulders, and then
hopefully I'll end up with something that I like:-)

Hi Ania,

The UK is a member of the Commonwealth (I probably spelled that
wrong), would it be possible for you to go to your local library and
ask them if it is possible to for you to order the book from another
country within the Commonwealth? Or possibly in another European
contry? I know that there is one copy of the book in a Danish library.
Or if you can't do that at your local library is there a university
near you that allow non-students to borrow books in their library, or
to use them in order to borrow books from elsewhere?

In my country (Sweden) I can borrow books from all over Scandinvavia
in my local library for a small fee, and at the university library I
can borrow books from all over Europe without any cost at all, due to
the fact that I'm a student there. This servece at the university
library is extended to everyone who lives in this town, however if
you're not a student, or employee at the university you will have to
pay for the postage.

Good luck to you

Heidi

Thank you all for the compliments. Heidi, you are correct about the softness of the yarn with the mohair content. That was a real revelation to me--I halfway expected the yarn wouldn't work at all, that the mohair would blur the cabling too much. But no! no! It was sort of perfect, a combination of cabling and wearability. I think the red one, the Jaeger Shetland Aran, is more what Starmore had in mind, but my Atlanta-based sister will definitely prefer the lighter, softer St. Brigid.

I wouldn't hesitate now to try another soft blend yarn for a heavily cabled design--I still think that tiny cables or gansey type knit-purl designs would get lost in translation, but who knows? Maybe some experimentation there.

I really encourage you all to keep going!! And I especially look forward to seeing Heidi's neck modifications when they're through. It was your modifications on the Filey that really got me going on St. Brigid, Heidi. That's exactly the neckline I'd work for myself if I were going to wear the sweater. I can't abide necklines up around my neck.

On the needles now is Martin Story's Celtic, from Rowan 40, the current issue, made with Felted Tweed and Kid Classic Trim. It's so delicate compared to St. Brigid! But lovely.

Keep knitting, ladies. St. Brigid is worth it. :)

I found the book in the library yesterday and I'm planning on starting
the Saint Brigid on 1 February, the feast day of Saint Brigid. Now I
need to find wool and get organised.

I'm very glad to have this group to see photos of other people's
progress and also variations etc.

Cheers

Excellent, Brigid. It seems so fitting (with your name, too!) that
you're starting this on St. Brigid's Day. It's a great project, very
absorbing. Just ask if you have any questions.

Hi Annie

Thanks for the offer. I'm interested in the database of yardage and
needle size used. (Of course your photos are what really inspired me
to seek out the pattern.)

Where it says "yardage or skeins" no one has mentioned the weight or
yardage of the hanks/balls/skeins. Also, I guess I'll have to read
through the old messages to see what size garments were made.

I'm from New Zealand, where it should be summer just now. I'm hoping
that the project will be absorbing and interesting enough for me to
finish this year.

Dear Brigid,

Follow this link if you want to know the substitution of the Scottish Heather.

You will have all you need for the yardage and needle size used. You will also have the gauge. You have to look in Aran weight.

I hope you will knit a beautiful sweater.

Bye bye

Hi Brigid--

Thanks to your reminder, I updated the database for my two St. B's,
including yardage and size info. I had to squeeze it all into
the 'skeins' category--there just aren't categories in the database for
that info. Also, I couldn't figure out how to delete my old (now non-
necessary record) without the yardage/size info. If you have any other
questions, please let me know.

I finally got a copy of Aran Knitting (had to drive 45 minutes each
way to a library that had it) and now I am agonizing over yarn
choices. I have some Classic Elite Skye Tweed - has anyone used that
yarn? It seems to be stiff in comparison to Cascade 220 or Plymouth
Galway (I've swatched with all three yarns).

I really like the look and drape of Cascade 220 or Plymouth Galway,
but I'm really concerned about felting. I made a pair of wool pants
out of Cascade Tweed for my son and just the seatbelt on his crotch
seriously felted them - other pants I've knit in yarns such as Peace
Fleece haven't had such problems.

What about Jamieson's Soft Shetland (or whatever's it's called now)?
Does it hold up well over time?

Considering all the work that will go into knitting this sweater, I'm
afraid of knitting it in something that won't hold up.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Southern Ontario knitter working on St Brigid for the second
time ... or is it the first?

I was lucky enough to nab a copy of Aran Knitting a few years ago when
a Toronto online store was selling its last copies. I ordered the
Hebridean 3-ply in Red Deer from Virtual Yarns, and Jade S. helped me
pick out the colour on the basis of a photo I sent of me and my
daughter (then 6 months).

I worked on it for a while, finishing the back and part of the front,
and then life went crazy for a while and St Brigid went into a bag in
the back room.

Where it got eaten by moths.

So ... I have frogged the moth-eaten pieces and will wash them
tomorrow. They are so dusty!! I had to take allergy pills to stop
the runny nose. Meanwhile I have started swatching (again) and have
reached 1/2 stitch wider than recommended gauge on 3.75mm bamboo
circulars. I think this will be alright, and my row gauge is a bit
short, so blocking should cure this small discrepancy.

Looking forward to learning from and sharing with all of you!
cheers
Erika

I've almost finished DH's St. Enda, just need to rip and redo the bottom ribbing since he doesn't like it so loose, then do the collar and front band, run the ends in and wash and block. He gets to sew the buttons on himself afterwards. I'm doing it from the top down, ala FLAK, and it was a really nice knit. I'll do mine this winter, when I can handle holding a heavy wool sweater on my lap again.

But now I can get back to my St. Brigid, who has been very patiently sitting here next to me on my desk while I tried very hard to get his St. Enda done by the end of March. I'll probably end up working on her on the couch in the living room where I can turn the ceiling fan on while I work. I'm hoping there will still be some cold days I can wear her before summer sets in. At this point I'm partway up the front, after working in the round to the armholes. When I finish the front and back, I'll pick up for the saddles and work the sleeves down, as I hate sewing seams if I can avoid them. This turquoise Cascade 220 is really looking good with the cables and I get lots of attention when I take her out to a restaurant.

Happy knitting!

I've stopped humming and ahhing, decided on the colour and make of yarn
and have started St. Brigid. As with many others I'm starting with a
sleeve to familiarise myself with the pattern. I would welcome any
advice on the best way to read and organise the charts. I've written
down the number sequence of each chart row, but wondered if there was a
tried and tested way of looking at the charts whilst knitting. I'm
going to copy the charts in various sizes and formats and see what I
come up with in the meantime.

Hi--

I never did manage to memorize the St. B charts, although they got VERY
familiar by the time I finished. I made two St. B's for two of my
sisters last year, and still love the pattern. For the charts, I
enlarge them on my copier, and slipped the enlarged copies into a
plastic sleeve which pretty much lived on my lap while I was knitting.
Instead of using paper to keep track of the rows, I used one of those
barrel shaped row counters that hang on your needles. I placed mine in
a few stitches from the edge, so it stayed in place on my circs. Then I
used the first digit of the counter to indicate the row, and the second
to indicate the row for increases, so that one just kept going 1, 2, 3
for instance at the point where you are now. And yes, I know there are
more than 10 rows for the first digit, but that much I could tell by
looking at the knitting. So that's how I did it.

Also, it took an embarrassingly long time before I realized that the
tww 'side cables' on the front were pretty much the left and right
halves of the center cable. Life got much easier then. :)

Good luck--you'll enjoy yourself with this one. I'll be interested to
hear if you ever manage to really memorize the pattern. I normally have
no trouble with that but St. B was a stronger woman than I--she won!!

Photos to prove I managed this are in the photos section under Annie.

Have fun.

Hi List,
I just joined, thanks for letting me take part in this.  The photos I have seen have been great, thanks for sharing them with the list.
I am currently experimenting with swatches using Galway worsted weight.  Can anyone tell me how it that compares to the Cascade 220?
I would appreciate any information about yarn alternatives to the original Alice Starmore yarn that is no longer available.
This looks like a great list, I look forward to sharing about this great sweater.
