I've just posted a couple of pictures of my St. Brigid in progress.
I'm making it in Navy, in a yarn (Karabella Majestic) with a 20%
mohair content, so the picture looks not as clear as I'd like.
However, I can say that the yarn is working very well with the
cabling--incredibly soft and drapey, but the cables are large enough
not to get lost in the mohair. It's really lovely.

Good thing--because I've just promised to knit a SECOND St. Brigid
for a second sister, and I'm planning on a burgundy Jaeger Shetland
Aran for that one, which has 20% Alpaca content. Using these kinds of
wool on textured work is a complete departure for me--but I'm glad I
gave it a try.

Also, I've modified the shaping slightly (ala Heidi and her Filey) to
make the sweater more A-line. I just added a few stitches in the side
panels of seed stitch.

Has anyone else had difficulty with the seed stitch having a
different row gauge than the cabled section? I've just thrown in some
short rows every once and a while, and then cured it, but I was
curious if it's a common problem, or just my seed stitch issue. :)

Looks gorgeous - lovely colour!

Mine is tighter than the rest of the sweater. I'm hoping to do some
Strenuous Blocking to sort out the problem!

Photos of the back of mine at
http://knittingonthegreen.blogspot.com/2006/09/finished-and-partly-done.html
and of my travails with the beginning of the sleeve at
http://knittingonthegreen.blogspot.com/2006/10/st-brigids-revenge.html
I'm on the 4th repeat of the sleeve pattern now and it's *a lot* quicker
than working the back, for anyone who's bogged down!! (I'm also working
the back of Elsebeth Lavold's 'Ragna', so starting the front of St B was
just too daunting)...

Hi Annie,

Your St Brigid is coming along very nicely! And the colour is beautiful.

I’m also a member of FLAK, where this very issue has been the subject of lengthy discussions, since it seems to be quite common to have a different gauge with seed stitches, when knitted together with cables.

If I remember correctly some choose other filler stitches instead to make gauge. Not having that problem I really didn’t pay much attention to those messages, but maybe you find it helpful to join FLAK at

 http://www.bigskyknitting.com/FLAK/knitalong.html

and go through the archives. Some of the replies to this issue seem to have been really helpful for those in need of advise.

Thanks, Heidi. I'll check out that list. I do belong to AranKnitting, but
not the subgroup for the FLAK. I think I pretty much cured my problem with
short rows, which worked perfectly. Every once in a while, I just short
rowed over in the seed stitch section, turned back around, and then did the
next row normally. So it only added height in the seed stitch section--just
where I needed it. And really, really invisible, since the wraps don't show
at all on the purl stitches.

I'm well along on the front now, and then on to the sleeves!

Hi fellow knitters!

Firstly, what a beautiful pattern. I have not been able to stop
thinking about this sweater since the weather got cold where I live.

I have been swatching away (including in a beautiful blue Cascade
220) and am finding both stitch and row gauge right on using an
undyed Henry's Attic merino ("Montana", very soft, light worsted).
Has anybody else used a lighter worsted weight yarn than Cascade 220,
made gauge and also, hopefully, a sweater that is adequately sized?
I could not make Cascade work without going to much smaller needles
and an awful lot of bulk.

In general on this pattern, is the seed stitch gauge swatch
representative of the rest of the sweater tension?

And, as to colors, I have noticed some of you prefer lighter colors --
since I may be dyeing my own, what colors have you found to showcase
the intricacies of the pattern well?

Thank you!
Loretta

Hi, Loretta;

I'm actually using Cascade 220 in Turquoise on size 5 needles for my St. Brigid as I like the way the fabric is coming out and I don't want a tent to wear when I'm done. I'm knitting mine in the round up to the armholes as I hate sewing sweaters together. Please take a look at my blog to see some photos of mine in progress. It's a fun knit - enjoy!

Happy knitting!

Has anyone found the recommended arm length (44 cm) too short? I do
understand that it's a dropped shoulder, but the total wingspan from
cuff to cuff seems quite short to me. I'm making this for my sister
who's 5'10 or so. I think I'll just lengthen the sleeves by a repeat,
but if anyone has any experience, pro or con, with the recommended
length, I'd love to hear it.

From the diagram, it looks like the same arm length for both sizes,
too, which also makes me leery.

Thanks! Front and back done, and nearly one sleeve now. Progress!

i am in the exact same spot as you are!  BOdy done and almost to the 44 cms of first sleeve!  Of course, I am just getting back into it after about 2 years so I have to figure out what I am doing all over again!
Dont forget the saddle!  That lenghtens the arm considerably.  That said, I hate short sleeves!

I'm a bit confused by your comment on the saddle? That just runs right along
the shoulder. I'm asking that if we add together the two sleeve lengths, 44
cm each, plus the width across the sweater, if that seems a bit short to
you? The saddle wouldn't lengthen that at all.

Anyway, it's great to know you're knitting right along with me. Heidi is,
too, I think! I finally decided to lengthen the sleeve to 48 cm before the
saddle, which I think will work out just right. I altered the pattern
slightly at the top to do that--after the fifth repeat was complete (when I
would have stopped according to the pattern), I did 8 more rows, but did NOT
start the new open cable (the one that would have been created by the
increases in rows 3 and 4). It really worked quite well to do that, and
looks more tidy than half a design which would have been cut off.

That description confuses even me, but maybe you see what I mean?

Thanks for the input!

That's very helpful - thanks! I am 4 repeats into the sleeve and my row
gauge seems to be off, although it was OK for the body! - so was
wondering what I was going to do to lengthen it!

How did the 50% Alpaca hold up with the cables? It looks just lovely.

No stitch means that stitch has not yet been created.  You simply go to the next real chart symbol and do that with the next stitch.  DO NOT slip any stitches.  The no stitch symbol is there just to make the chart more readable -- it keeps the cables lined up with the ones in the rows above it.

For example, when reading the chart from right to left, if you have a knit, a no stitch symbol, and then another knit, you would just k2 (knit the first symbol, then skip the no stitch, then knit the second symbol.  You will have taken TWO sts off your left needle and onto the right.

If there are multiple no stitch symbols together, just skip them all on the chart and go to the next real stitch symbol.

Does that help?

DO NOT slip any stitches. The no stitch symbol is there just to
make the chart more readable -- it keeps the cables lined up with
the ones in the rows above it.

Hi All,
I have started knitting my st brigid again. After 18 months on the
needles, I picked her up on boxing day. Reading your posts also gave me
the incentive to finish her this time. I love the colours that have
been chosen, mine is a light green. When I finish the back I will try
and post a picture. {This will be fun, I am sure.}
My hubby has been home most of the year with a back injury, so my
knitting came to screeching halt. We now have three more weeks to
wait, to see if his employer will give him his job back. So while we
wait, I will knit.
The weather has been very hot here in West Aust, but for some reason
knitting seems the right thing to do.
To all I wish a very Prosperous New Year.
Take care & keep safe.
Val

Thanks Katy. I was amazed at how much time had passed, since I had
done any knitting. I promised myself that I would do the KAL, but with
the drs visits etc etc, there just didn't seem to be anytime left in
the day.
Regards Val.

I have finished the back of my jumper. I am pretty pleased with myself.
I have taken photo's but it will be awhile before I can post them,as I
don't have a digital camera. Now to get started on the front.
Take care.

Okay, my insane commitment to knit TWO St. Brigid's for two of my
sisters (thank heavens the other two never got in on this!) is over,
finito, done, finished. It really was a lot of fun, and very
interesting to see the two different yarns work up. The lighter yarn,
still worsted, but a light worsted with mohair, went to Atlanta, and
the heavier Jaeger Shetland Aran is off to Denver tomorrow.

I think it'll be a while before I commit to doing two Starmores at the
same time again, but I did enjoy the effort. Pictures of both are
posted in my photo file here. There are two of each--either I got the
color right, or the cables showed well--but never both in one picture
for some reason.

Off to knit something simpler for the next couple of weeks.

Hi,

I've also joined in the desperate hope that someone will be prepared
to share some info on this pattern with me. I can probably work out
the pattern from the pics, but some stitch count, sizing and yarn
info would really help. I am working on the Cromarty sweater from The
Celtic Collection, which is similar, but can not get hold of a copy
of Aran Knitting. I've search the catalogues of every library in the
UK and scoured the web for a sensibly priced copy, but I really don't
have the sort of money this book is demanding. If anyone can anyone
help, please contact me. Thanks

Ania

Hi Annie,

They are truly beautiful!

However I must say that the blue one really caught my attention. The
stitch definition is perfect, and yet it looks so wonderfully soft
due to the mohair content in the yarn. It feels like you cannot look
at it without wanting to put in on immediately.

The close up on the other one's neckline is very good. Making a
neckline like that looking good is not an easy task, however you
made a really good job on that one, it looks great!

Progress on my St Brigid on slow. After finishing one side of the
front neckline I realised that I had to redo it, since the
shortcuts that I had been doing with the pattern due to the V-neck
made it look terrible. Having redone it, I'm still not happy with
it, thinking that it is to narrow over the shoulders. I'll probably
end up ripping the back as well as the front back to where I started
the decreases for the sleeves and then recalculate the pattern in
order to make it 1-1½ inch wider over the shoulders, and then
hopefully I'll end up with something that I like:-)

Hi Ania,

The UK is a member of the Commonwealth (I probably spelled that
wrong), would it be possible for you to go to your local library and
ask them if it is possible to for you to order the book from another
country within the Commonwealth? Or possibly in another European
contry? I know that there is one copy of the book in a Danish library.
Or if you can't do that at your local library is there a university
near you that allow non-students to borrow books in their library, or
to use them in order to borrow books from elsewhere?

In my country (Sweden) I can borrow books from all over Scandinvavia
in my local library for a small fee, and at the university library I
can borrow books from all over Europe without any cost at all, due to
the fact that I'm a student there. This servece at the university
library is extended to everyone who lives in this town, however if
you're not a student, or employee at the university you will have to
pay for the postage.

Good luck to you

Heidi
