I am on the second repeat and so far have only made 2 mistakes that needed tinking and reknitting, I'm working on the 2nd one now. I have to say the wrong side rows go way too fast! ;-)

I recall that I made several photocopies of the charts and laid it all out on a piece of cardboard. Theoretically, you'd need only do that for one repeat; however, I was a little bit insecure and laid out the entire thing.
I hope you are progressing! It's a beautiful sweater.

I have started my sweater. It is a merino silk blend and dyed every color of
red wine you can think of, it is beautiful! I am on row 3 after about 7 starts.
I think I need to create my own spreadsheet so that I can follow all the
patterns without flipping pages.
Hi all,
I joined so that I could benefit from all of your knowledge. 3 gals at my LYS,
http://theartfulewe.com/ in Port Gamble WA, are going to make this sweater and 2
others are going to make the shawl. Heidi (shop owner) is currently swatching
and we are deciding which of the yarns we will use. The choices started out
with alpaca, then a single ply merino, then a merino/silk blend, then a 4ply
merino and last a merino 60/ bamboo40.
We are leaning toward the merino bamboo because of the nice stitch definition.
WIll keep you posted as to our progress!

All, I am on my first sleeve and will have to make it one repeat shorter since I am very short and have short arms. I realized that when I get to the end of the sleeve I will not have as many chart A stitches as it calls for since I will have less repeats. Do you think that would be a problem, and if so, how could I compensate. Love this list, would love to see it get more active too. I am using Cascade 220 Ranier Heather and love it. Have used 6 and 1/2 skeins so far, still have to do most of the first sleeve and then the next sleeve and the collar. I have almost 5 skeins left so I think I will have more than enough! Susan. Susan, I'm using Berroco Ultra Alpaca, the color is called Mesa and I
really love the feel and the color of the yarn.
Your St. Brigid is very pretty too, nice color.

All, I put a couple of photos of my beginning efforts showing the Cascade Ranier Heather yarn in my album called Susan in N. GA's St. Brigid. Paula, you have to get the pattern from "Aran Knitting" by Alice Starmore, which is out of print, but your library may have it or if not they can do an inter-library loan and get it for you (most likely!)

The same thing happened to me, I bought my yarn because of the sale. The Ranier Heather is truly gorgeous. I was so pleased even though it was lighter than it looked on line. I was able to do the increases very easily, I have done a lot of lace knitting so I am used to yarn overs, etc. I have already done a full repeat on my testing and am now up to row 15 on my new yarn! This is my first Aran sweater. I don't get bored either, I like seeing the pattern develop. Susan in N. GA

The Cascade 220 sale at Webs (www.yarn.com) is what finally got me to start this sweater, which I'd wanted to knit for years. Eleven skeins (100g each) cost me just under $60, including shipping, so the cost is comparable to that of an acrylic ($2.73 per 50g). I started the back on Sunday, and have completed 4.5 repeats. So far I'm finding it time consuming, but never boring.
Row 3 does have you increase in a purl stitch, as the chart indicates, which may make better sense to you if you look at a picture of the finished sweater. A tiny gap develops under the increase, but I'm liking it. Any sweater this dense can use some ventilation. :)

Sylvie, After a couple of months of testing, I have also started mine. I am using size 6 needles, I always have to use smaller size than called for. I got my beautiful Cascade 220 Ranier Heather a few days ago. Bought 11 skeins. I know that will be more than I need, but just to be sure I got extra. It is a gorgeous grayed purple/lavender. I love it. I learned the pattern fairly well during my testing process, and am really enjoying it, I started with the back and got to row 5 last night. I have already done a full repeat on my testing, so I know I can do it!! I also started a Na Craga by Starmore as an experiment and am loving
that. It is in the same book. I also got mine from the library. Your blog is great, thanks for posting a pix of the yarn. I look forward to hearing about your progress. Feel free to email me privately too, I think it is great that we are starting at the same time. Blessings, Susan in N. GA www.pro31.blogspot.com

Hello everyone, I was looking all over the place for this book and my daughter found it for me at a library.
I'll be starting on it tonight, did a swatch and I'll be using 4mm (6 us) needles and Berocco Ultra Alpaca yarn in Masa, which is a medium yellow.
Hopefully I won't have too much trouble reading the pattern.

Oh, thank you. I did learn the patterns fairly well and found the Cascade 220 on sale, so ordered the Ranier Heather. Can't wait to get started with the good yarn. I am also practicing on the Na Craga Starmore pattern, so am really getting into this. Susan.

Hi Susan
I did trial run with inexpensive wool. Unfortunately I bought the wool online and found it was very scratchy. I made the St Brigid in a vest style and it turned out well. The scratchy wool is fine
as its not next to my skin.
Next time I'll make it correctly with appropriate wool, but I'm glad I had a practise with the tricky patterns.

Ladies, I am a newish member but just wanted to share that I just completed my first repeat (24 rows). I started right in doing the back, but am doing a trial run on some very inexpensive yarn. I can't afford to buy the Cascade 220 that I want until I can make sure I can do this. I am an experienced knitter, but not in Aran knitting.
I am very pleased with how my first rows have turned out. I have a question, I am starting my next row (repeat of row 3) and I just want to double check that the increase is done with knit stitches. It is done into a purl stitch, so I just want to make sure that is not some mistake I have made. Can anyone let me know if this is correct?
Also, I was wondering if anyone else did a trial run with inexpensive yarn? I am actually using Simply Soft Country Blue on size 5 needles and it is surprising how nice it looks.
Ah, I see the spammer has joined this list to hassle us. I blocked her this morning from my yahoo list, for the fourth time! She doesn't take no for an answer and seems to think she can just join lists and advertise whenever and wherever she wants. I've been hoping that yahoo would be able to stop her sooner. The list mom will have to forward her post to the yahoo techs so they can track her ISP down and block her, again.
Now for the good stuff - I'm on the second sleeve of my St. Brigid and yesterday I finished my DH's daughter's Elizabeth of York vest so I can get back to working on St. Brigid again. She sure is pretty and I so want to get her done to wear before the weather warms up too much. There is a St. Brigid KAL now on Ravelry and I've been letting folks know that there is the KAL here, so they can come join and enjoy all the experience of folks here, not to mention the beautiful pictures!
Happy knitting!

Hi Val
I'm glad you like the vest. Yes, I did use a pattern for a long line
vest. The fronts were much faster to knit since they didn't have the
biggest cable panel. I'll try and get a photo of the front to show you.
Should I try and scan the vest pattern and put it in the folder?

Since we all use Yahoo Groups to receive messages from this group, I thought I would let you know about a free service I found called Grouply. It is the best way I've discovered to access messages from all my Yahoo Groups. You can use this link to sign up: http://www.grouply.com/register.php?r=134116.
I am a member of so many groups that I found it very difficult to keep up with all of them. Grouply makes it easy. You can search and browse across all your groups at once and even view a cross-group event calendar. You can have one Smart Digest email (which I love) sent to you at the end of each day that summarizes what's going on across all your groups, highlighting what's interesting to you and hiding what's not.
I've found Grouply to be a huge time-saver for me and I thought it would also be helpful
for others. Enjoy!
Hi Brigid,
I love your vest. I am going to do one for myself. Before I get all excited
about knitting one I have to finish Hubby's Jumper. Was there any particular
vest pattern you used? My jumper is on the bed beside me and I know that I
will wear it for a short time during the winter, but the idea of a vest is
perfect.
Cheers Val:>
Thank you Johanne, I was so pleased with myself for finishing her. I like to
knit something really hard so I don't get bored, but once you get into the
swing of things this pattern is quite easy. I hope you get yours up and
knitting again.
Cheers Val:>
