SRI RAMAKRISHNA ASHRAMA
MADANPUR-RAMPUR, KALAHANDI

Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Madanpur-Rampur is situated
in Kalahandi,one of the most backward districts of
Orissa to propagate the ideas of Swami Vivekananda
“Atmano mokhsyartham jagad hitaya ca”. Swami
Vairagyananda,the founder of the Ashrama,has worked in
the Ramakrishna Math & Mission Centers of
Puri,Bhubaneswar, Calcutta, Haridwar, Rishikesh,
Gangotri etc. While working in Gangotri many
Sannyasins of that place inspired him to start a
center in the backward district of Orissa and work
among the poor and down trodden people. With the
active support of the legendary (Late) Biju Pattnaik ,
the then Chief Minister of Orissa, he started work in
a dilapidated piece of land at the outskirt of the
block headquarter of Madanpur-Rampur.Even though
people of Kalahandi were eagerly waiting for the
advent of SRI RAMAKRISHNA MOVEMENT in their area,he
had to overcome a lot of opposition, resistance apart
from the difficulty of near total absence of
infrastructural support.

Keeping his mind firmly on Sri Ramakrishna and Swami
Vivekananda and through hard labour and dedication he
converted the whole picture within a period of 5
years. Now the Ashrama has two units. Second unit is
functional at a distance of 3 kilometers from the main
Ashrama compound . At present the following activities
are being undertaken by the Ashrama .

1.Allopathic and Homeopathic Mobile Dispensary.
Two groups consisting of one doctor and one
pharmacist go round nearby and far off villages on
alternate days. Free medicine is made available to the
needy villagers. They cater to approximately 50
villages.

2.Old Age Home.
An old age home with twenty five (25) inmates is
functioning inside the main Ashrama premises. The
inmates are from the most backward and poor families
with no one to look after them. They are provided with
free bed, dress, food, medical care etc. It is a sight
to see the joyous old men going through the daily
chores including busing themselves with cutting of
vegetables grown inside Ashrama premises and singing
bhajans and listening to Bhagabat recitation.

3.Tribal Boys’ Hostel.
Fifty (50) students from the poorest tribal
families are selected for bringing up in a
religious-cultural atmosphere. Every need of theirs is
looked after to free .In addition, free coaching class
is conducted. They are also taught religious ideas,
prayers, bhajans, and kirtans. How wonderful to see
some of them performing evening aratrikam with much
devotion! It is specially taken care to foster all
round development of the boys.

4.Residential School With Agriculture And Other
Training Center.
It is a unique experiment carried out successfully,
fifty school dropout boys, who were working in the
fields are brought up and educated up to class v
free. In addition they are trained in modern farming
in practical environment. They are also imparted other
vocational trainings to help them earn livelihood in
future. As part of cultural training, teachers have
been appointed to train them in devotional music
(both traditional and folk) and kirtana.The families
of the boys are given a stipend of Rs 100/- each per
month.

5.Agricultural Training Center.
An agricultural farm has been set up in an area of
about fifteen acres. All types of vegetables including
Broccoli and Lettuce are cultivated using high
yielding verities of seed. These are sufficient to
meet the need of Ashrama. Two trained personnel from
Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Ranchi are stationed to look
after the farming activities. They also go round
villages imparting advanced farming techniques and
distributing seeds, manures free to the farmers
especially to the unemployed youth. There is a
proposal pending with the Govt. to expand the
activities of this center on the lines of Ranchi
Ashrama. This center along with the residential school
is functioning in the second unit of the Ashrama.


6.Center For Prevention Of Addiction And
Rehabilitation.
The center aims at freeing the poor people from the
clutches of alcoholism and other forms of addiction
through the use of audiovisual shows, persuasion and
personal rapport.

7.National Integration Camps.
The Ashrama conducts national integration camps at
least twice a year. It tries to foster the ideas of
character building, service to the needy & helpless
and patriotic feelings as per the teachings of Swami
Vivekananda. College students from various parts of
the state enthusiastically participate in the camps.



Besides these, annual tithi pujas of Sri Ramakrisna,
Maa Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda are celebrated
in the Ashrama with much devotion. The National Youth
day and Youth Week are celebrated on Jan 12 and Jan 12
to 18 respectively on the occasion of the birthday of
Swami Vivekananda with much gaiety and fanfare among
the young participants from all over the state.

Presently the only building Ashrama has is used for
the tribal hostel. Another is being constructed for
the old age home. There is a proposal for building
quarters for the Ashrama employees, Sadhu Niwas and
Prayer Hall. Any donation to the Ashrama is exempt
from income tax under 80G of Income Tax Act. Donations
can be sent in the address given below through

shall be acknowledged.
