The Mooviegrooves guy made the comment about "The Champ" being the most sampled
track out there.

That's pretty much right. I would have made this very comment if he hadn't made
it first.

Coincidentally, the track at the 2:37 mark of Captain America episode is the same track used at the beginning of the Spiderman episode you posted the link to. So obviously, some of the needle drop music from MSH found it's way to Spiderman. Out of curiosity, is 'Birth of Micro-Man' from Season 1?

I'll also buy a steak dinner to the person who can get me an clean MP3 of the track I asked about below (28 seconds into  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y1LamP_UyA&feature=channel_page. Dessert is optional.

1) Are you talking about the very beginning of this episode where you see
the title card? That's definitely from MSH, as is the one that follows
that starts at the 28 second mark. Speaking of which, the second piece is
my absolute favorite piece from both MSH and Spider-Man, so if anyone
knows the name/source I'd appreciate it.

2) The only thing I hear at 2:37 is the end of a piece of music with
congas that ends itself with a quick horn burst as the new scene fades
in- is that what you're talking about? Or is it the music that starts at
2:42 when O'Brien says "Must be an accomplice"? <<

I had a question for you. Does anyone know the "needle drop" source
for the music played at the beginning of this Spider-man episode?:

It was originally played on the 'Marvel Superheroes' show, it shows up
in this clip here, around the 2:37 mark. <<

I don't know (or go by) the DVDs, but according to my info from the
early 80's (my videotapes!) it's the 2nd HALF of Ep.42, the 1st half
of which is "SUPER SWAMI". That was part of a short run (5 episodes)
where they decided to try returning to the 1st season format of having
2 10-min. stories per show. This meant muich faster-paced cartoons, a
lot more talking, a lot of creativity, much less "endless music
padding", but with the same dark, demented art, colors & "film noir"
music of the 2nd season (plus some "new" stuff, at least "new" for the
Spidey show).

I still remember the first time I saw these-- I had long since given
up on the ABC run, once they got into endless reruns. WHO KNEW when
new episodes would air? I sure didn't. That's why I never saw any of
the 3rd season (except for "RHINO", which was run-- by itself-- in
between 2 of the "regular" 2nd-season episodes-- GO FIGURE) until they
turned up in syndication (in Philly, on Channel 17, who ran the show
NON-STOP for about 8 years, along with ULTRA MAN).

I wished they done the entire 3rd season that way, but after making a
valiant effort, they must have completely run out of money, and that
when the "remakes" of earlier episodes began. As a teenager, I just
sat there with my jaw dropping open, unable to believe anybody could
do what they were doing. It got so bad-- it kept getting worse...
Ain't it amazing how "watchable" they seem nowadays, at least because
of the music??

Just for easy reference, here's my list of the "new" short stories
from the 3rd season...

Ep.39
TROUBLE WITH SNOW
SPIDERMAN VS. DESPERADO

Ep.40
SKY HARBOR
THE BIG BRAINWASHER *

Ep.41
THE VANISHING DR. VESPASIAN
THE SCOURGE OF THE SCARF

Ep.42
SUPER SWAMI
THE BIRTH OF MICRO MAN

Ep.43
KNIGHT MUST FALL
THE DEVIOUS DR. DUMPTY

Ep.46
RHINO (shown in the middle of season 2)
THE MENACE OF MYSTERIO *

* These 2 were actual adaptations from the comic-books, and naturally
tend to be among my favorites. "THE BIG BRAINWASHER" actually
contains scenes from the first 3 comic-book "Kingpin" stories
(including the climax of the 1st story, MISSING from the previous
season's "KING PINNED"), while "THE MENACE OF MYSTERIO" is fairly
close to the original 2-parter-- except, for their inexplicable total
redesign of the character! I suspect this may be the very last cartoon
Grantray-Lawrence started on before they went belly-up, because not
only is it so well-written, it also features dialogue completely at
odds with the visuals. In one scene, Spidey calls Mysterio
"bowl-head"-- but in the finished cartoon, Mysterio AIN'T wearing one!
(Kinda like how one of the punks in "THE ORIGIN OF SPIDERMAN" calls
Peter "four-eyed foul-up". In the comic, he wore glasses. In the
cartoon, he didn't. But the dialogue was left intact. GO FIGURE!)

: )

Is there any way to filter these spam memberships out i.e. make people
have to write a short reason about why they want to join the group (one
of Yahoo Groups security options)? There's been quite a few posts of this
nature lately ("I want to meet you", I have added you to my friends
network", "You've receive a private message from a friend") and they
really are a bit distracting.

Just wondering.

There probably is, I just haven't ever figured it out.

It would probably be a lot worse if someone hadn't given me authority
on this site, I've been DELETING those kind of messages outright and
BANNING anyone who posts one. There is no excuse and no second chance
for anyone who "joins" a group like this and the very first thing they
post is that kind of obvious SPAM message.

I have a 45 of it that's very scratchy, so much so that attempts to

period in the late 70's/early 80's when the record industry really let
the production standards of their vinyl output go to HELL-- this
included "oldies" 45s, obviously.) <<

NO! It was just something I had on a 45 that I put on a custom comp awhile back
and recently noticed that it was REALLY BAD after I'd processed it. Might have
been better if I'd left in the scratches (as I did with a Toscanini classical
LP).

You can never tell what the results of using "pop-click" or "noise reduction"
will be... sometimes, they work wonders, but other times, it's better to leave
the flaws in and just clean the tracks BETWEEN the songs.

THANK you. I've been hitting "BAN AUTHOR" and deleting messages without
hesitation or regret, but just hadn't had a chance to figure out how to do the
other thing. (There's only so much my po' brain can handle!)

Now I wonder how this "approve" thing works...

Currently puttng together a brand-new comp, which is quite complex as it's
"various artists" and with stuff from all kinds of courses, a number of which
are on vinyl, some of it OLD, BEAT-UP vinyl. At least one song looks to require
some very tricky and tight cut-and-paste editing. It's a project I've had on my
mind for a few years now, focusing on music from my childhood... which means, it
all predates the Spidey stuff by SEVERAL years! But there is at least one
Saturday morning show involved, which thankfully a friend in Wales has supplied
me with VERY good recordings of the music.

Just for the sheer hell of it... anybody out there got anything on CD by Gene
Wiesniewski? (I know it's available, I just can't afford to buy it right now. My
sound editor's getting a lot of use today...)

It's frustrating. 4 years of nothing, then 2 tracks turn up... then, more
nothing.

I downloaded about a dozen more albums a few months back, but other than those 2
tracks, no more "Spidey" stuff.

Anybody have a clue who the composer of the "Zoo" and "Home" tracks might be?
(Anybody???)

Oh well... in a totally unrelated question, would anybody here happen to have
any CDs by Gene Wisniewski, who recorded a lot of Polish-language music decades
back? (I found a store that specilaizes in that stuff who actually have a "best
of" comp by him, but I can't afford to buy ANYTHING right now.)

Just posted at the Silver Age Marvel site...

<http://www.samcci.comics.org/spider-man/ASM%20031%20p12%20inks.jpg>

Panels 7 & 8 were used extensively during the 1st season of the cartoon!

In addition, the doctor in panel 3 is the exact image of the prison doctor (I'm
pretty sure) seen in "TO CAGE A SPIDER" and reused in "SPECIALISTS AND SLAVES"
seen in seasons 2 & 3.

How's that for "source material"?

I can just hear Ray Ellis music in my head as I look at these panels...

Welcome to the group (and this welcome goes out also to several other recent
members!).

The Moxxi track "MENACE OF THE MOLEMEN" is a medley of several different pieces
by at least 2 different composers. It opens with what I've been calling "HOLD
ONTO YOUR HATS", a moody piece that made its debut in the episode "CRIMINALS IN
THE CLOUDS" (when Spidey shoots his webbing straight up into the artificial
cloud concealing Sky Master's airship) and also appears in "MENACE FROM THE
BOTTOM OF THE WORLD" (right after the Bank disappears and he swings down to
street level to take a look-see)-- and no doubt several other episodes as well.

At 0:55 seconds in, it switches to a softer, faster piece, which reminds me of
"PANIC PATROL" but on comparing I know it's a different track.

NO IDEA what the real name of either of these are, or who wrote them.

Then at 1:17 in it switches to a Ray Ellis piece used often in the 1st season
(and no doubt many times in the 2nd & 3rd). I never quite finalized my own names
for most of his tracks, but it seems to me I might have been referring to this
one as "CONFRONTATION". (As most of Ellis' music was meant to be used in any
given place in any given cartoon, most of the titles I was coming up with were
on the generic side.)

Thank you for your answers.

Henry's answer was outstanding!!! thank you Henry.

I have many other questions about Spidey's cartoon music, but I just can upload one song at a time. Anyone knows if there is any easier way to upload them for the group?

This music was not only palyed in Spider-man cartoon, but also in several Marvel Superheroes chapters. My questions to you Spider-rman music experts are:

1) Who is the athor, and the real name of the song?

2) Do you know where I can buy this

Welcome to the group (and this welcome goes out also to several other recent members!).

The Moxxi track "MENACE OF THE MOLEMEN" is a medley of several different pieces by at least 2 different composers. It opens with what I've been calling "HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS", a moody piece that made its debut in the episode "CRIMINALS IN THE CLOUDS" (when Spidey shoots his webbing straight up into the artificial cloud concealing Sky Master's airship) and also appears in "MENACE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD" (right after the Bank disappears and he swings down to street level to take a look-see)-- and no doubt several other episodes as well.

At 0:55 seconds in, it switches to a softer, faster piece, which reminds me of "PANIC PATROL" but on comparing I know it's a different track.

NO IDEA what the real name of either of these are, or who wrote them.

You're welcome.

By the way, if you don't have them already, you should really e-mail directly
and set up a trade for the following items:

SPIDER-MAN 1968 -- 72 minutes of remastered KPM tracks from seasons 2-3

SPIDEY COVERS -- misc. covers of Ray Ellis 1st season music

They make a great 2-disc set!

Well that's why we're here. The hard work (the KPM disc) was done in late 2004,
and then last year the COVERS disc was added to the booty.

Anyone who wants copies, e-mail me directly and we'll see about setting up a
trade...

Tuesday night, I wanted something to make me smile. I dug out A HARD DAY'S
NIGHT.

"Honest, I didn't mean no harm. I just wanted to encourage the poor lad to
encourage himself."
"LORD KNOWS what you've unleashed on the unsuspecting South! It'll be wine,
women and song the whole way once Ringo gets a taste of it!"

Thursday, I figured, might as well watch the other half of the tape. HELP!

"With a ring like that I could-- dare I say it? --RULE THE WORLD! I MUST have
that RING!"

Tonight, because I hadn't watched it in AGES, I went looking for the next tape.
Man, what a weird night...

I can still remember first watching MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR on a midnight show at
the Cherry Hill Mall Cinema (long gone). What a freakin' WEIRD film. Made for
TV, color everywhere, and ironically, shown on the BBC in BLACK AND WHITE so its
intended audience missed most of the best parts. A good story, it ain't. It's
barely coherent at all. The late 60's were a particularly flaky period in art
history, when all the rules seemed to get thrown out the window. I've got a
short list of what I consider the "weirdest movies ever made", and this is on
it.

That said, the short TV film (run around the Christmas holiday originally) seems
nothing more than an excuse to string together a set of MUSIC VIDEOS. Being it's
The Beatles... WOW. The "videos" are all worth watching, from the ethereal "The
Fool On The Hill" to the pre-2001 "Flying" to the 30's musical tribute "Your
Mother Should Know". And right in the middle of all this, "I Am The Walrus". You
know, it struck me as I watched, it doesn't matter how many countless times I've
heard the song, how "used" to it I am... "I Am The Walrus" remains one of the
great "WHAT THE F***???" moments in pop music history. ESPECIALLY when you're
watching the video!!

I'm copying this from another Yahoo group where I posted it, as I hope some here
might enjoy bit...

"Stan is at his best being light and breezy, when he does try to delve into
deeper water he's out of his element. The best example is the leaden Silver
Surfer comic book."

AHHHH yes... the SILVER SUFFERER!

"he voiced the characters"

This could often be very good. See DR. STRANGE. When he left, it became almost
unreadable. NOT because of the plots, which were as good as ever, but because
the guys who took his job of writing dialogue and claiming they had written the
plots, weren't very good at the half of their job they were actually doing. When
he returned, even with someone entirely different doing the plots from before
(Marie somebody...), he still managed to improve it over whoever he replaced.
(Denny somebody...)

"he restructured the plots"

This could often be bad... REALLY, RRRRRREALLY BAAAAAD!!!!!!!

"Spider-Man quickly became Marvel's best selling book, and not many people view
Romita as a more interesting artist than Ditko or Kirby."

Well, that took MORE than 40 issues. Steve... what's his name? ...he did it for
40 issues, and then this other guy... Italian Mafioso kinda name... took over,
suddenly it shot up in sales. Prettier pictures, no doubt... (Or were the guys
with bent noses making sure the newsstands took more copies of a book drawn by
an Italian guy than by a Polish guy? Hmm... never thought of that before...)

"Spider-Man was an incredibly boring Romance/Teen Humor comic book with a super
hero thrown into the mix."

WAITAMINUTE... "Teen Humor"? WHERE? Teens, sure... Humor, sure... but not "Teen
Humor", if you catch my drift. ARCHIE, it wasn't. If it HAD been more like
ARCHIE, maybe it wouldn't have been so G**D*** depressing so much of the time.

Watch the 1967 Grantray-Lawrence SPIDER-MAN cartoons. (The ones NOT done by "The
Psychedelic Brothers", Bakshi & Morrow.) Now THAT was fun! More people watch TV
than read comics, now or then. I've long been convinced that show-- run
ENDLESSLY in syndication in the 70's-- put Spidey over the top as a household
name more than all the comic-books he ever, ever appeared in.

By the way-- isn't it funny that when it was FIRST-RUN on ABC, the SPIDER-MAN
cartoons ran in the SAME time slot as ARCHIE???

"Sugar... oh, honey honey... you are my candy girl... and you got me wantin'
you..." (Good question: Ron Dante sang Jeff Barry's ARCHIES songs. WHO sang the
SPIDER-MAN theme??? Anybody know? Anybody??? Talk about "Unanswered Questions of
the Universe"...!)

"It featured none of the imaginative mythology of Kirby's books, none of the
graphic power, yet widely outsold Thor and the FF."

When it started outselling the FF, it didn't have any of the mythology or
imagination of STEVE DITKO, either. But who needs ideas when you're in the
Mafia?

"He is also very careful to take all the credit for character creation for
himself. The only exception is the Silver Surfer which Stan let slip in a
printed interview in the 60's as being the invention of Jack Kirby. I've seen
quite a few recent interviews with Stan and if anything he's gotten worse about
credit for character creation. He very consistently describes himself as
creating the characters and handing them over to the artists."

The 3rd season of the SPIDER-MAN cartoons (1969), they added a credit at the
end: "Based on a character creation by STAN LEE." Flies (no relation to THE FLY)
in the face (no relation to THE FACE) of the credits at the beginnings of those
feature films (no relation to EVIL DEAD 1 2 & 3), don't it?
