I am not going out of town for the December holidays so I could watch your dog if you are going out of town for Christmas/etc. Please email me if you are interested.

Dear Friends with Dogs:
As some of you already know, I am in the City Room blog this week answering questions related to my project City Walks with Dogs: New York. I've gotten some good questions, but also lots of anti-dog hostility, and I could use some more solid questions to answer on the site tomorrow and Friday. So--if you can possibly take a moment to post a question regarding enjoying the city with your dog, and/or pass this query along to your friends, I would be most grateful!! Subj: Important DOH Press Release
Dear PAWS members,
The Department of Health (DOH) has issued this press release reminding New Yorkers to avoid wild animals and ensure that all pets are up to date on rabies vaccines. Last week, a second raccoon infected with rabies was found in Manhattan. This is the first infected raccoon that has been found in Central Park (the other was found in Inwood Park).
Please read the linked press release and help us widely circulate this information to the Central Park dog owner community by printing out copies or sending people to the DOH Web site. If you do let you dog off-leash between the hours of 9:00 pm and 9:00 am, please keep a watchful eye on them at all times and do not leave them unattended.

Hey there,
I am planning, along with two other people, a BSL (Breed Specific
Legislation) protest to take place on Thursday July 23rd at 6:00pm in
Washington Square Park. Many people from the group I organize - The NYC Pit
Bull Group - plan to attend. But we literally need HUNDREDS in attendance,
to make a difference and to receive recognition. We are hoping to make this
protest into a large-scale event, (with your help) of course!
"BSL" is the "regulation of your right to own or, in many cases, not own a
dog based solely on the breed or type of dog, not your responsibility as an
owner." The protest will revolve around the BSL laws that New York Housing
Authority enforced upon pit bulls (and dobermans, rottweilers and tons of
other breeds) just last month. Many elderly people in city-regulated housing
are now in jeopardy of losing their pets because of this law, and I've
received hear
tbreaking letters from people asking for help. In addition, we
are using an example of one particular pit bull Bruce, from Northern
Ireland, who has been on death row for n early two years, while the court
decides if he should live or die. Bruce's fate will be decided within weeks,
or possibly days. He will be our "poster-child" for the protest. Here is
Bruce's story... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRJYVszJ7tE
Northern Ireland has BSL laws in place, and they are allowed to rip pit
bulls from their homes, even if they have lovely temperaments, and euthanize
them. The owners of Bruce fought back, and it has become a massive political
issue, with people forming groups around the globe, to try to help Bruce and
to fight against BSL. Bruce was given a stay of execution last week, after
an enormous effort on the part of thousands of people, but he still may be
euthanized. We are hoping to get press to the park, to cover the story, so
we can send clips to the government in the UK, showing them that the U.S.
disapproves of the animal cruelty of Bruce. And we are hoping to make New
York aware that we will not stand for any BSL in our city. Unfortunately,
the idea of BSL in New York City has come closer to a reality, ever since
the New York Housing Authority was able to enact their new law. Miami,
Detroit, Denver, and many20other cities already have BSL laws in place. Your
dog could be next, so we need your support!
This is not merely a pit bull issue. This is an issue regarding the rig hts
of all animals and all people. If you love your dog, or you don't have a pet
but you care about animals, or you simply believe that the government should
not determine which breeds should live or die based on the way they look,
then PLEASE make an effort to get to the protest. I would appreciate if you
can contact me, to let me know if you are able to show up, so we know how
many people to expect at the protest. And if at all possible, it would be
really cool if a few people can make some posters with info about BSL, or
print up some flyers with the protest info to hand out in your 'hood, or
advertise on craigslist and other sites. If you know a media source or
reporter that might be interested in covering the event, please let them
know. And I am hopeful that you will each pass this email on to others, so
that the word will spread like wildfire! Post the protest on your blogs,
facebook pages, and begin networking. Bring your friends, bring your dogs,
bring your mom!
Thank you so much. I'm incredibly grateful for any help you can provide.

There has been a real explosion in raccoons this year. They are all over Park Slope as well, as far west as 5th Avenue (there has been a colony in Propect Park for decades). Bat Ridge has also seen an increase near shore Road Park.

On July 6, 2009 a raccoon found outside Inwood Hill Park tested positive for rabies. It was found right in our hood- 207th and Payson. This is the first rabid raccoon identified in Manhattan since 2001. 4 other rabid raccoons have tested positive for rabies in the Bronx. It goes without saying that you should never approach a wild animal, doubly so now that there is a confirmed case of Rabies. For all the dog owners I would be sure not to let your dog off lead in the park- they could get into a scuffle with a rabid racoon and you might not even know it. It is also imperative that your dogs be up to date on their rabies vaccine- if an unvaccinated dog or cat is exposed to a known or suspected rabid animal they are required to enter a six month quarantine in an approved facility or be humanely euthanized.
Thanks- feel free to pass along.

Is there some place on the NYC Parks website that

In other words, when the parks department finds
perverts running around with no clothes on or
leaving condoms strewn all over, where is the

I am also curious if the NYC parks department is

Hello all SPDog members!
Today is "It's Your Park" Day and it's time for us to unite and show the Parks
Committee that we so want this Dog Run and how it will bring the community
together. We already have our date set up for June 10th. Unfortunately, no one
on the steering committee can go to the park today (it's from 10am-3pm) and I
know it's such short notice but we are asking our fellow SPDog members to come
and help us out. We need people to go to the park and represent SPDOg and
obtain more signatures and e-mail addressesI have placed the sign in sheet in
the files section of our group and its already been send around.
So please, if you are able to do so, come out to Sunset Park today and show how
proud you are to be a SPDog member and how you want to make a difference how
much this dog run means to you. We really, really need your help. If you cannot
pull up the file just use a good ole' pad and pen and get those e-mail addresses
and those names and support from the community. Thanks in advance for your help
and support. Together, I know we can get this off the ground.
Best of luck,
Sylvia
We’ve got a date for our public hearing at the
community board for our dog park, at long last!
WED., 6/10, AT 6:30PM AT THE COMMUNITY BOARD: 4201
4th Avenue, BETWEEN 42 AND 43.
The CB will have flyers ready for us on Monday, 5/18.
We will be having an SPDOG mtg. to prepare for the public hearing and
strategize about how to get the most people out for our cause. PLEASE
PLEASE come if you can. Even if you can’t come to the planning
mtg., it is imperative that you attend the community board hearing on June
10. I’ll post the flyer as soon as I get it. Please help post
it around the neighborhood and get the word out.
NOW IS THE TIME TO MOBILIZE!
Hope to see everyone at our SPDOG planning meeting on
Monday, 5/18, 7:30pm at 642 52nd St., ground floor, between 6th
and 7th Ave.
Don't know if you've heard of this but the city's department of
housing is now restricting the size of dogs allowed in public housing
to under 40 pounds, and is banning some breeds altogether (pitbulls
naturally). The aspca has this press release on the subject:
http://www.aspca.org/pressroom/press-releases/042809.html
How did this sneak by? It's going to wreak havoc on an already
overloaded and underfunded CACC...

I would totally be there, but I have class so I cannot! Can I submit a letter requesting same, or is it really more an in-person thing?
Thanks, Krissa

Hi, Listers.
Below is an announcement for the community board Parks Committee
meeting on Tuesday the 24th at 6:30 at the Sunset Park Recreation
Center. This would be a really good time for us to show up and ask to be
placed on the agenda for next month. I have tried repeatedly to get us on the
agenda to no avail. Are there people who would be willing to show up? Please
let me know. Thanks.

hi there- i am looking for a home for a brother and sister pug/chihuahua set. They are 2 years old and attached to one another - very sweet little dogs. both are black. lady is neutered and maxey is not fixed but does not have to be because he has no testicles. the family they are currently living with can no longer afford them. if interested please email me atkdelorenzo@hotmail.comand i can forward you pictures. they both are really lovely and get along well so we'd like to keep them together!
note from cross-poster - the dog may just have undescended testicles, in which case he should be neutered IMHO.
