RE: [space-modelers] Engine Bell Colors for SPS Engine

I just uploaded a series of photos and, after taking a close look at them
myself, I'm actually confused now as to the color scheme we're talking
about!

My guess would be that the SPS engine bell was made of some type of
EXTREMELY light weight and fragile material, which is why it was almost
always kept under a protective cover pre-flight. The only known flight
ready CSM that I'm aware of in existence is the Skylab Rescue CSM at the KSC
Visitor Center, so I threw in some pics of it, too.

My advice is that y'all make up your own minds as to how to depict this
particular piece of hardware.

I've not yet found good photos for the SPS Engine. I seem to recall copper on the interior and then copper on the upper section and black on the lower...

I'll add to the quandry.  The pics I have of the CSM at the Cape has a two tone scheme.  To my eye it looks like a light ghost grey over a lightened...

Thanks guys. I found a high-res photo of the Apollo 15 CSM with the SIM Bay open. It clearly shows the upper section of the engine bell with the coppery...

If you look at Kipp Teague's site there is an entire sequence showing the Apollo 15 CSM, and the colour changes. I always assumed the copper/gold tinge to be...

There's a whole series of photos of the Apollo 15 CSM in lunar orbit on the #88 mag from that mission. My impression has always been that the exterior of the...

Sorry, Karl I would have to disagree with you there. Never seen any photos to suggest the top half is semi gloss aluminium. I know a lot of modellers portray...

I've uploaded the only photo I know of to the Files Section, of a CSM (Apollo 10), prior to stacking where the SPS doesn't have its red protective cover. It's...

These do add to the confusion, don't they? The Skylab CSM SPS seems to match the Apollo 9 SPS more closely, though shows up a bit lighter in that photo, but...

I'm just glad to see that it's not just me seeing conflicting photo evidence for the coloration. I think Kerl is correct about protective coatings. The photo...

Nawww, usually something happens to kick a model out of contention in IPMS shows LONG before this becomes an issue in determining if a CSM would place or not....
