I can vouch for the Will Smith tactic as I was one of the gullible neighbors who
signed the thing!

The developer in question owns and operates the large plaza at 11th and
Washington. He's basically proposing the same sort of strip mall. He's also
done a lot of illegal, unpermitted construction at 2301 over the years.

Hope to see lots of neighbors out. I'm headed down myself shortly.

A.

It's a proposal for yet another Asian type shopping center -- the developer has
been less than forthcoming with the neighborhood for years. He is reported to
have once sent kids around with a petition claming that Will Smith was behind
the development.

I'm debating parking down near you while I'm in Harrisburg. I'm leaving midday
tomorrow (1:30) and returning 5:15 on Fri, and those trains don't stop in
Ardmore, so I have to go via 30th Street. I could park at 23rd and Race, and
walk over, and spend $27 for three days, or park free and cab it, have to figure
out by late tomorrow morning.

       Hi Everyone.

To let everyone know who may be interested, SOSNA is giving away free turkeys

Folks signed up in advance, but the noon cut-off for picking up a reserved free

December 2, 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of the hanging of John Brown
following his failed raid on the arsenal at Harper's Ferry W VA. This event is
considered by many to be the tipping point that made the Civil War inevitable.

John Brown was widely regarded as a hero in the African American community of
the time, and vigils were held on the day of his execution in the abolitionist
community and in black churches. A detailed record of one of those vigils, held
at Shiloh Baptist Church (2040 Christian Street), has resulted in a living
history performance scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m. This free
event is produced by Millicent Sparks, who originated the narrator's role in the
National Constitution Center's "Freedom Rising" theatrical performance.

The Shiloh event is one of about a dozen lectures and presentations being
offered next week. Full details are available at

http://www.civilwarphilly.net/johnbrown/

I've seen Millicent Sparks in her living history presentation as Harriet Tubman,
I and guarantee she'll send chills up your spine. This promises to be a
memorable event. As an added bonus, Shiloh's choir will be performing, and its
pastor, Rev. Edward Sparkman, will assume the role of the Rev. Jeremiah Asher,
who presided over the 1859 vigil and then went on to fight in the Civil War as
part of the U.S. Colored Troops Sixth Infantry Regiment. There's more detail at
the web link, together with a downloadable flyer.

I hope to see a good number of our neighbors on December 1.

Please delete the note that was distributed to the entire listserve.  I hit
"reply" to the individual who had posted a note on the listserve, thinking it
would only go to that individual, which is the case with other listserves where
I am member.  I did not realize that this listserve had a protocol that sent
both "reply" and "reply all" messages to the entire listserve.

I'm sorry for any confusion this has caused, as my message to a specific
listserve member would be completely irrelevant to all other members of the
listserve.

Mark Zwick "fired" me-actually, he called me to tell me that
he found an architect who would do construction documents at a much lower fee,
and without a structural engineer cost.  So, I wished him well, and am a bit
relieved.  I just felt I couldn't walk away from a job with a decent fee at
this point, but wasn't willing to do it for any lower than I had proposed.

Philadelphia Street Furniture Forum

PENNFuture is cosponsoring this forum with the Mayor’s Office of
Transportation and Utilities on the street furniture program. The event will
take place on *October 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Academy of Natural
Sciences at 19th St and the Ben Franklin Parkway*.

Next Great City called for a new street furniture program as one of our 10
recommendations in order to improve transit stops and make it easier, safer
and more pleasant for people to use public transportation. The city will be
releasing a request for proposals for a new vendor in the next few months,
so this forum is an opportunity to share our thoughts on what this program
should include.

This contract will have a dramatic impact on Philadelphia’s streetscapes,
and can help to provide needed amenities to our communities. Please plan on
attending, and please also forward this invitation on to your members and
constituents.

Craft Fair - Flea Market - Bazaar Vendors Wanted

       SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 - 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Join the Friends of Julian Abele Park for a Pre-Blocktoberfest Craft Fair / Flea
Market / Bazaar.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, the Southwest Center City neighborhood will play
host to "Bloktoberfest" - a fall celebration featuring food, fun and music.
Before the festivities kick-off, join us at Julian Abele Park which will be
turned into an open air craft market / flea market / bazaar. We are seeking
vendors for the market. Spaces are approximately 10 feet x 10 feet and will be
assigned on a first come, first serve basis. The fee to reserve a vendor space
is $25 per space. Tables will not be provided.

We are also offering a limited number of premium sponsorship spaces. These will
be located prominently along Montrose and 22nd Streets, and are intended for
local businesses to advertise to the local community - perhaps give away some
literature. These spaces are $100 apiece.

The craft fair / flea market / bazaar will open at 9a.m., with registration and
set up at 8 a.m. Interested parties should contact Lauren Vidas at
LVidas@... for additional information. Checks and money orders should be
made payable to Friends of Julian Abele Park, a non-profit. All proceeds will be
used for maintenance and improvements to the Park. Click here to download the
flyer, including more details on how to reserve a space.

Julian Abele Park is located at the corner of 22nd and Montrose Streets in the
Southwest Center City Neighborhood.

BLOKTOBERFEST!!!
Dear neighbors:

BLOKTOBERFEST!! - Call for Volunteers and Artists

By now, hopefully you've all heard of this year's community festival -
BLOKTOBERFEST - to take place two saturday's from now, October 24th, from noon -
8pm on the 2000 block of Christian Street.

This event is intended to celebrate this fantastic neighborhood in food, drink
and music, and to bring special attention to one of this area's most prized
assets - the Shiloh Baptist Church. The church, located at 21st and Christian,
was designed by the firm of renowned Philadelphia architect, Frank Furness, and
rightfully sits on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.

In an effort to bring people into their facilities, Shiloh is inviting local
artists to come display their work inside during the event. If you are an
artist interested in using a magnificent space as a backdrop for showcasing your
work, please reply to this email with ART in the subject heading. We will be in
touch with details in the coming days depending on the interest.

BLOKTOBERFEST is free to all who come.

Food and beer cost money. Food will be offered from food trucks serving tacos,
hot dogs, sausages, Caribbean food and more. Beer, curated by Adam Ritter from
the Sidecar Bar, will feature seasonal varieties from some of the best craft
breweries out there, including BELLS, SLY FOX, LEFT HAND, STOUDTS, BLUE POINT,
LANCASTER, and FLYING DOG.

To drink beer you will be asked to make a $10 donation, which will get you a
bracelet (identifying you as being of-age to drink), and three beer tickets,
each of which you can redeem from any of the breweries. Additional beer tickets
will cost $3.

PROCEEDS FROM BEER GO TO HELP THE SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH REPAIR THEIR HISTORIC
STRUCTURE.

Music will feature not only some local bands, like Paper Monster and the Major
Leagues, but also nationally recognized acts like Philly's own ADAM ARCURAGI
and, the headliner, THE LOVE LANGUAGE.

Rather than regurgitate all the details here, I urge you to check out the
website - www.bloktoberfestphilly.com, or follow us on Twitter.

Lastly, we need help pulling this event off - setting up, breaking down, and
manning the entrance points. We're looking for 15 helpers.

Volunteers must be over 21, commit at least two hours and will be given a couple
free beer tickets for their troubles. If you're interested, please reply to
this email with VOLUNTEER in the subject heading, and we will set up a time to
meet prior to the event - either day-of, or the day before - whatever works
best.

Thanks so much for the great interest we've been receiving in this event, and
hopefully we'll see the entire neighborhood out on the 24th.

how 'bout the 125yr old warehouse on Schuylkill Ave. btwn Webster and
Catharine, across from the former JFK Vocational School site. Been closed-up
now for yrs but was pretty cleaned-up when a developer had a public mtg
there for a proposed condo development couple yrs back. Always thought the
place would be a great place for a micro-brew pub.

Armory is on 23rd Street. You could also try two area churches:

Shiloh Baptist Church, 2040 Christian Street -- it has a huge meeting space in
its education building, with prob. 30' ceilings.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 902 S. 20th Street. I believe its basement
gymnasium would fill the bill.

Yes, they caught him very quickly after matching my sister's ID to the vehicle
seen under surveillance in the gas station! He has been in jail since Wednesday
night and there is a prelinary hearing tomorrow morning. I will keep you all

Thought those of you with furry family members might appreciate
this. My poor dog is so skittish that I think she needs something
stronger than a blessing... an exorcism perhaps? At any rate, for
those of you with more sociable critters....

ST. MARY’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
1831 Bainbridge Street

Invites you and your furry and feathery friends to the Blessing of
the Animals Celebration. Sunday, October 11th at 10:30 AM. Treats
(for animals and humans) will be provided.

For more information, please call 215.985.0360

This service is always great! Bring yourselves and your pets.

Hi,

I am looking for an indoor space that has approximate dimensions of
50' x 50' x 20' that is in the downtown area.

If you know of a social hall, church, empty storefront, cafeteria or
indoor athletic space (condo, gym, whatever), please let me know the
info that you have, and I'll take it from there.

Thanks!

Brian

I also agree that the police officer should be reported for his inaction. I
**strongly** urge you to file a complaint with the police department's internal
affairs division.

But first, consider calling up the media. Fox 29 is particularly good at
bringing attention to this type of stuff. What you had was originally a hot case
that could have been solved with immediate attention. Now you have an open case
with an armed perp on the loose as the end of the month pay period approaches.
Look both items up on the internet. If necessary, call the police beat reporters
for instruction and I'm sure they will be helpful.

Second, contact the Commanding Officer for the police district in which incident
this took place (the 17th). Go to the phone book or look up the available
information on the phil.gov website. Also be sure to contact the office of
Police Chief Charles Ramsey and Mayor Michael Nutter (contacting Council
President Anna Verna is also recommended) .

All you have to do to get things started is say "I was robbed with a gun to my
face and the police did not help me when I went to the station."

That should get things going very quickly in the complaint-filing effort.

Your reported conduct by the police cannot be tolerated. It places us all in
harms way and tears at the city fabric. It also empowers you to re-control this
matter and represents a moral obligation to care for others and prevent a repeat
of this misconduct.

Please, **please** take appropriate action. You will also see better police
services in your area, which is another benefit. I and other readers hope you
will follow through.

Excellent.  Unfortunately, there are some lazy cops out there...hopefully
outnumbered by the good ones!  They will find him eventually although it might
take time.  Nice job.

I wanted to keep everyone posted about my the gunpoint robbery of my sister at
our doorstep last Wednesday night. The good news is that a competent detective
took over for the incompetent, lazy detective who told us she couldn't do
anything despite my sister's positive ID. The original officer said there was
nothing found in the gas station surveillance tape where he tried to use her
credit card, but apparently, the officer was mistaken or lied. According to the
