I second Alex's statement.
While the term "rider down" is not "standard English", it is easily
understood without need for further definition. It is widely used in
online mediums, whether chat rooms, bulletin boards, e-groups such as
this one, e-mails, text messages, blogs, newsletters, etc. where
English (be it vocabulary and/or syntax) is much less formal and - to
its credit - immediate. So I think saying "rider down" in the subject
line was entirely appropriate here. It conveyed the necessary message
in the fewest possible words, without falling afoul of issues of
race/age/sex or fault/blame/causation.
Furthermore, the original info came from an online cycling form. Being
able to copy and paste material like this from original sources means
we can convey information to the e-group as quickly and efficiently as
possible while avoiding transcription errors or misunderstandings that
could arise if we attempted to tell it in our words. Long live Copy &
Paste! :)
See you all tonight in The Mall and round Parliament Square!
