Well no, I don't remember that one. And to think I left that doll staring into
the darkness while we slept in the adjoining room. I better lock the door. I
just checked on it and it has not moved. But those eyes. They keep staring at me
no matter where I go. Maybe that gull had the right idea.

7 courageous paddlers survived the 12NM round trip journey from Nisqually Reach
to Solo Point. We braved the drizzle, north wind, killer sea lions, and a
floating island to make this voyage. The paddlers were Chris D, Ted, Holly,
Peter, Gerry H., Denny (the new guy) and me. The sea lions were many and noisy.
On a couple of occasions they would group together and make very scary noises to
encourage us to stay out of their territory. One group came after a couple
paddlers that got to close to their resting place on the barge. We say an angry
eagle go after a seagull. That was an interesting chase but the eagle didn't
get revenge. The tide was so high that the beach was nonexistent when we put
in. The delta looked different because the tide came up to the top of the land.
It was nice to paddle with such valiant and brave paddlers. And as you know Ted
risked life and limb to save a dying victim. It was a great day. Jackie

On today's SSAK paddle a bit south of Ketron Island I spied a vortex of flotsam. I wasn't thinking of paddling through it when a gull spiraled out of the sky, landed in the stuff, and started pecking vigorously. Well, now I'm curious. I paddled over thinking the gull would take flight, but nooo. He just edged out my reach like he was very reluctant to leave. Looking down what did I see, but this poor creature (see link below). That evil gull was trying to peck its poor little eyes out. So it got a ride home and maybe after a transfusion and some TLC it will show a little more life.

Well, while some will claim it was simply the sheer number of candles, I still maintain the birthday cake was in fact topped with magnesium metal ribbons!
You see, as a group 2 element, candles made of such alkaline earth metals are actually very seldom found atop unsuspecting birthday cakes, BUT lots of luck to
the poor sap that tries to blow out a cake full or em' . .

Yet more proof that a Pungo is vastly superior to a Nordkapp.  You'd have had no problem at all in a Pungo.

FREYA DID IT!!
Completes Circumnavigation of Australia

Freya Hoffmeister before her departureFreya Hoffmeister finished her circumnavigation of Australia around noon, Tuesday, December 15, 2009. She landed at the Queenscliff beach at the mouth of Melbourne Harbor 332 days after departing from that same spot on January 18th.  She covered approximately 8,470 miles (13,800 km) in 245 days of paddling, averaging nearly 35 miles (65 km) per day. In spite of numerous attempts, the circumnavigation of Australia has been completed only once previously, in 1982 by Paul Caffyn in 361 days. Freya saved time and distance by taking a bold “short-cut” across the Gulf of Carpentaria, a 350- mile (575-km) open-water passage that took eight days and seven nights on the water.
SK Staff toasts Freya's extraordinary accomplishment
Sea Kayaker is proud to have been a sponsor of Freya’s remarkable adventure and we congratulate her on the successful completion of her history-making voyage. We’ve published regular interviews with Freya during the course of her expedition, starting with our February 2009 issue. We’ll conclude our series in the April 2010 issue. See photos of Freya at the finish at www.seakayakermag.com.

Congratulations Freya!

We have 5 solid confirmations for this paddle and I am posting it one more time and offering it up for you to go. As of now, we have no more seats left in the two cars going down so anybody who signs up now might need to take their vehicle. I need to know within a week if you are planning to go because advance permits need to be purchased to launch below the base of Hoover Dam ($40 for permit and required commercial shuttle access). I have gone down and scouted the trip and have LOTS of details I can send you. There are also multiple ways to join the group after Feb 22 without prior notice and permits. Let me know if you need more info. Gerry.

I'll start with some Rock & Roll..

Ok, here's one for you Long Flume lovers...

During storms like this the crew plots a course which puts the ferry in the least vulnerable position, but at some point they have to change course, and when they did Puget Sound made up for lost time.

After this run the ferry system stopped running at full capacity and ran 1/2 empty for the rest of the
night.

Note that there are no longer cars visible in the last shot. I'm sure they were washed into the cars behind them

Each shot was taken 0.3 seconds apart hand held at 320mm's.

I'm glad you guys liked them; I was amazed at what I saw through the lens. During the wind storm I like to go down to the Lighthouse Park in Mukilteo and watch the ferries, but I've never seen a ferry take a hit like that. After this run they added a 3rd ferry and ran them 1/2 empty.

I'm going to have Costco print up a few 20x30".

Someone either PM'd me or posted that I should send these to the WS Ferry System. I tried to sell them a much tamer, but similar shot and they told me these kind of shots don't promote rider ship. I couldn't argue that one.

Thought you hardcore kayakers wouldn't enjoy this since you seem to be fearless. I personally would be heaving over the side if I was out in this. Pretty incredible photos though.

Subject: Anatomy of a Windstorm; Washington State Ferry System in Action

On Thursday October 18th Western Washington was hit with a 50+ MPH wind storm. Here are my pictures of the event.

After work I made my way down to the Mukilteo Lighthouse Park where I witness the Mukilteo to Clinton ferry taking a pounding.

These Issaquah 130 Class ferries are over 300 feet long and 78 feet wide and weight in at 2477 tons (4,954,000 lbs) unloaded......

I'll start with some Rock & Roll..

I purchased my Kokotat dry suit shortly after beginning to sea kayak a litte over a year ago.  I purchased my suit from Kayak Academy because they were one of the few stores that would custom order the suit to fit me.  Another plus is after you order a suit, they send you home with a loaner suit to use until your suit comes in, or provide you a loaner suit in the event your suit needs to be sent back to the factory.

I would not order a suit that uses ankle gaskets.  The suit with the built-in sock is sure nice because your feet stay dry, specially in cold water.

NOTE:  I do not work for or receive any royalties from Kayak Academy, just another satisfied customer.

Hey, great. You found us. If you have not found it already our website is at http://southsoundar eakayakers. com/

Drysuits are hard to come by at a reduced price. The demand is too high. If you look at our photos you will see some of us spend a lot of time in the water. It definitely helps the learning curve. Your best bet might be Craigs List or scouring the retail racks in the middle of winter. I got a couple at REI once at about a third of list price, but haven't seen a deal like that in a long time. Aldercreek in Portland offers a 20% discount on your birthday and there is no sales tax. If you belong to Washington Water Trails (or our club I think) Kayak Academy offers a discount. A lot of our club members have bought suits through them because of service and custom fitting. Personally I'm a big fan of the Kokotat brand. They replaced my previous well worn suit with a new one at no cost. Their customer service is really top notch.

I'm just trying to find an affordable dry suit to get me in the water! If anyone can help and is willing to barter that would be great. I'm the staff photographer @ The Peninsula Gateway in Gig Harbor. I can shoot photos of whatever you need as a barter/bargaining chip. I have a big family and funds are here and there. Wedding, portraits or follow you around as you buy coffee, we could make you an internet reality star! Give me a call so I can gleam kayaking advice through osmosis or if you need a few pictures.
