We are a group of concerned citizens in Austin, Texas, who are totally opposed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' desire to bulldoze, channelize, or otherwise destroy one of our city's most gorgeous and precious urban ecosystms -- Williamson Creek. The Corps is considering plans to construct some form of "structural alternative" (commonly known as a DITCH) along several miles of this lovely riparian oasis, ostensibly to "protect" a small handful of houses (that already have flood insurance) from further flooding -- and we are not going to rest until this dubious plan has been abandoned once and for all. The good news is that Sunset Valley and one stretch of ditch has already been ditched due to overwhelming opposition by neighbors that are the ones most "threatened" by future flooding. The bad news is that several miles -- particularly the lovely stretch between Manchaca Road and South Congress Avenue, which includes a stretch of publicly owned greenbelt -- is still under study by the feds and the City of Austin. This group will continually monitor these awful plans as they take shape and alert our members as to how they can thwart this attack against our beautiful city.
