I was really curious to know the real picture of Sri
Venkatramana's role in compiling the works of Sri
Thiyagaraja. I have forwarded a mail I received from
a reliable source. It mentions that Sri Venkatramana
is one of the disciples who compiled the works of his
master. While I have heard Sri Venkatramana
acknowledged in Carnatic music circles as a great
composer (most of the concerts on Thiyagaraja end with
a work of Sri Venkatramana praising the master, if I
am correct), he doesn't seem to have been the 'Boswell
to Sri Thiyagaraja' as is believed in our community.

I raise this issue not to question the validity of the
above statement but to know the real facts behind it.
Mr.OSS could clarify as to what his sources were on
his short article on Sri Venkatramana.

In Tyagaraja's case, as with many composers, the music was handed down
through his disciples. Some of his disciples:

his disciples: Veena Kuppaiyar, Tiruuvaiyar Iya Bhagavatar, Walajapet
Vankatarama Bhagavatar, Manapuchavadi Venkatasubbiah, Thillaisthanam
Ramaiyengar, Lalgudi Ramaiyar, Umayalapuram Krishan Bhagavatar, Subbaraya
Sastri (son of Syamasastri), Sundariyer, Amrithalingam pillai, Nemam
Subbaramaiah, Nangavaram Neela kantiah, Sojjiri Seetharamaiah, Kannaiah
Bhagavatar, Venkatachala pathi Bhagavatar, Ganesappagaru, Kumbakonam
Aravamutha Iyer and Walajapet Potti Joshiya.

Tyagaraja is said to have died in 1847. One of the earliest compilations
came out in 1908 by Narasimha Bhagavatar (Dowden and Co). After that,
there was one in 1916 by KV Srinivasa Iyengar (Sangita Ratnavali) and THEN
Kritimani Malai.
