I have an extra 20m phone SoftRock that was recently built to test a
20m phone crystal in the SoftRock circuit. The receiver uses a 18.869
MHz crystal in 1/3 sub-harmonic sampling to get a center frequency of
about 14.148 MHz. Band coverage with a soundcard that can sample at
96 kHz is from 14.100 MHz to 14.196 MHz. Seems to play well.

If anyone would like to have this unit I can put it in the mail today,
September 1. Price is the usual for a built unit, $27 for US/Canada
and $28 for DX. PayPal to raparks @ ctcisp.com (remove spaces
around "@") will get it on its way today.

Thanks and 73,
Tony KB9YIG

Hi,
Ive just finished building a softrock v6.1 board with the components
(band pass filter) for around 460khz. (Using the 1.843mhz xtal
==460khz'ish) from quick testing it seems extremely sensitive.

One problem was trying to wind 118turns onto a T30-2 core - I got as
far as 86 Turns and switched to "that'll do mode" :) - Tony had advised
me this was nigh impossible and has kindly sent some T50-1 cores, which
will be wound when they arrive.

Around 450khz it will easily detect RF fed via a signal generator at
-127dbm (making a switchable attenuator is on my to-do list..)

At 220 Khz (/8 and who's IF is there anyhow?) -81dbm seems the lowest.

At 2nd Harmonic "up" 910khz (not spot on but withing the range) a
signal at least -50dbm needs to be present before it starts to show
in the 460khz region (e.g 2nd harmonic)

Hooking up the signal generator to the crystal at at -7dbm output level,
its possible to tune the V6.1 (in 455Khz "kit" mode) from

320Khz to 16Mhz when JP1 is at /8 = Thats External Osc, which
corresponds to a frequency range of 40khz to 2Mhz. (to be verified
with another signal generator, I suspect > 100khz is the usable range)

Im pretty sure I saw some standard time transmission around 60khz,
does anyone have a spectral plot of such transmissions ?

-----------

I was originally going to modify an Icom IC1500 and tap the 455Khz IF
from the underside of the main pcb, however my soldering iron which has
a narrow tip looked like a tree trunk next to the components. Since the
"do I really want to risk trashing mr dc to light for a softrock
expeirment" reality check kicked in, Ive decided to switch to plan B
taking the 455khz (or 450?) IF from an AOR 2002 dinosaur this is Pending..

For 455KHz or 10.7MHz and actually several in-between I.F.'s you can use
very inexpensive commercial I.F. cans that can be bought for a
fraction of a dollar.

Also there is no need for 118 turns when using cores, at that low a
frequency type 2 cores is the wrong type to use, a more practical core
would be type FT37-43 Ferrite core were you would only need a small
fraction of those turns. For use at frequencies lower down a FT37-77
core could be quite useful.

For experimenting with Softrocks these items can be found at a
reasonable size Hamfest if one does not want to incur minimum order
sizes. Some outfits offer core samplers at a low price that might have
several different type of cores in one package.

Hi Tony and others,
I too am thinking of following the 8125Khz IF route but with an FT757.
Some while ago, I seem to remember someone suggesting that the BPF may
not be needed as the receiver would do the filtering.
Would you care to comment.

Subject: Enclosure for Delta 44 Interface Board

Good afternoon all,

I just uploaded a few photos to the photo section of an enclosure I made
for the Delta 44 Interface Board Kit. It uses a Ten-Tec TPB-11
enclosure, which I bought direct from Ten-Tec's webpage for under $7.
(I ordered other enclosures at the same time so I don't know what
shipping would have been on just the TPB-11 enclosure)

Four 1/4" holes were drilled to match the jacks on the Interface Board
and a slot cut into the back panel for the DB-15 connector. I used a
pair of sheet metal nibblers to "nibble" the slot. I match-drilled
holes for the DB-15 mounting ears and secured the DB-15 to the case with
a pair of screws with a threaded male section and a female section.
The male section was threaded 4-40 and I retained them with a single
4-40 nut.

A grounding lead was connected from the DB-15 connector shell to one of
the grounded pads on the Interface Board.

I used four stick-on feet on the bottom of the box.

It looks nice and seems to work very well.

Comments welcome.

thanks and 73,

Kalyan, I bought my cables from razern on ebay, cheap and fast
shipping, just paste
6' 3.5mm 1/8" male mini plug stereo
or
12' 3.5mm 1/8" male mini plug stereo
in search and you will find it. As for antennas, just a 10, 20 foot or
what ever piece of wire plus a good ground does help (speaker wire or
?). If you want to get fansy, radio shack should have a shortwave
antenna kit or wind-up antenna.

I am shopping for a sound card. I see the M-audio series is available
in 4 channel, 6 channel, and 10 channel versions.

Delta 44 (4 channel):

Delta 66 (6 channel):

Delta 1010LT (8 channel):
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=2\
50599&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

Not much price difference between them. Would the 6 or 8 channel
version work as well for SDR applications? It might be nice to have
those extra channels available for other processing needs if there is
no downside.

Hi Jerry
I'm using a 66 here, there is often very little difference inb price
between the delta 44 and delta 66,
Its worth having those extra 2 inputs/outputs , they are not on the main
interface but on the sound card and are digital IO.
Not sure about the 1010 .

-125dbm on the generator rather than the software, which was
calibrated to -73dbm S9 and tracks rather nicely to +-0.5dbm the
generator!)

set as divide by 4,

For VLF - I saw another post on this topic?

at 100khz rx, (400khz on generator / external clock) mds was -61dbm
at 55khz rx, "audio" mds was around -47dbm e.g a signal of -47dbm was
needed to get any response (audio or change in spectral peak)

Using winrad
at 55khz rx, at -72dbm the waterfall line / spectral peak was at noise
floor. (considering -73dbm is S9 the bandpass filter is doing its job)
although the sim gives -22dbm at 55khz for the bpf = 94dbm, which is
curiously too close to the soundcards theoretical 96db so maybe thats
what was being measured rather than any directly converted signal by
the softrock board?

Mike.

Look at the M-Audio 192, it has 24bit/192khz but only 2 channels.

Hi Loren

re xtals - my earlier reply (2nd Sept) was direct to your email address but maybe it didnt make it so heres a re-transmit.
I am still keen to have one of your xtals. Let me know the final cost including shipping and also if paypal is ok - with details.

regards

Mike G3TGD

Hello all,

I have 2 crystals available for 10.7 Mhz IF. They are 3rd overtone 42.833333

to use an external 1 transistor overtone oscillator to drive the board.

I am also going to try breadboarding the regular circuit and see if there is
a simple minimum evasive method to use these crystals on the board.

These crystals are $6.00 shipped to US. May be slightly more overseas. I am
only selling them for my cost plus shipping.

Or, if you have a surplus of cash, the ultimate in quality are the EMU-1820M
(PCI bus) or the EMU-1616M (PCMCIA
interface). 192 kHz, 24 bit. From a rapid test they seem to have 8 dB more
dynamic range than the Delta 44, but at a
price...

I read your email (below) with interest and decided to do the same. On July 24 I ordered a DDS-60 from AMQRP and a MS-DDS-60 from KD1JV but although Paypal have paid the money needed to both parties, neither has acknowledged the order or payments. Can anyone suggest a way of getting a result with this?

I finally finished a "production" version of a Softrock receiver. By
production, I mean everything in one box with proper connectors
instead of a bunch of pieces scattered around the bench. In the box
is a SR-6, a DDS-60 and a MS-DDS-60 (Controller).
I am using a SoundBlaster MP3+ so I can use it with any computer with
USB (especially laptop).
The Rocky display looks the same with the DDS-60 or the 28.224
crystal. The output of the DDS-60 directly replaces the crystal via a
short piece of small coax.
One of the nice features of the controller is that it displays 7.056
but actually puts out 28.224 for the SR-6.
You set the center frequency on the controller. Then transfer that
number (like 7.056) on the display to the appropriate field in Rocky
setup.
The DDS-60 goes to 60MHZ so this configuration will work to 15 MHZ.
This includes lots of ham bands, short wave bands, and most IF's. Now
I need to do some work on switching the band pass filter for higher
frequency coverage than the "stock" SR-6.

Now, if Rocky only supported AM and maybe FM (hint hint).
There have been several questions lately about the use of the DDS60.
I have found it very successful.

Ian when I ordered a DDS60 it came very quickly, but there was no
acknowledgment when I ordered.
Mine was sent snail mail, no hold ups in customs.

Ian, on page 2 of my paypal receipt it gives an email address
amqrpkits@... for questions about delivery and tracking. My
DDS-60 has not been on order that long but I think it deserves s a
question of them...

It could also just be stuck in the UK post office customs office which
we will get charged for. As I remember it cost £13 plus import duty
for some Inrad filters purchased on eBay.

Hi,

Just to say that I have had a prompt response from Bryan Williams at
amqrp to my email stating delivery times and that my DDS=60 will be
delivered within that time.
