Hi all softrockers, I just made my first QSO with my new 80/40m RXTX.
It came together nicely with just a few glitches introduced by the
builder himself.

Tony, thanks for all the fun and challenge you give us "rockers". I
hope to meet some of you fellows on the band when I really get rockin'

The catalog from ICM
	 http://www.icmfg.com/pdf/ICMcombinedcat2006.pdf
doesn't have anything with a number like 43UAAAA00FAL.

ICM seems to want a description (catalog pg 9) in terms of holder type,
tolerance grade, load C, and
frequency.

Folks, the email address is nice but that is available from your email when you ordered, more importantly I need your full name and mailing address so I can get the parts out.

Cecil,

I sent two emails to your *correct* address yesterday, but see that your
list was not updated in the revised quantities I requested. The first
was sent at 5:52am CST and the second at 10:54am CST yesterday.

Also, part of your email problem with some others is that you HAVE THE
INCORRECT email address shown with an EXTRA LETTER "L" in "sbcglobal" on
your website. It is shown as sbcgloblal.

Hello Cecil, sorry for the group post, but I am STILL having issues
with sending you simple emails.

Per your request, I tried sending my mail address and other pertinent
info. After several hours, I got back an email failure notice.

This time, I used the email right on the mini-buy web page. I cut it
from the page, removed the spaces, and used it.

I will try again, this time manually typing it in.

Sorry for the delay, but I've been trying.

Must be my thick head getting in the way again.

Thanks for the correction, I changed the site. My ISP must be having
a field day making peoples emails as SPAM, but I will go through them
and make corrections before ordering the parts.

I'm headed now to get supplies, I wish I had not got rid on my

Sorry that some have been having problems with the order.

The email address to this group is correct, but it was pointed out to me that the email address at the web site was incorrect, it has been fixed.

After I come back from getting padded envelopes I will be going through all my email accounts SPAM folders for any emails I missed.  I will then correct the list for the final time and post it and wait 1 hour or two to hear about any corrections before I order the parts. I will be ordering a few extra parts in case something small was missed.

I'll be back!

The error that I had was traced to the extra "l" in the domain name.
At least, I think so. I sent a follow-up message to the corrected
email address last night, and that one has not been returned.

Thank you once again Cecil for doing all this work. Be sure to NOT

What a great find!  I have been looking for chips like this for months.  I wanted to keep the SoftRock side very simple and do all the programming on the computer side.

Let me know how things work out.  I will be ordering the chips next week.

I think you could also program an Si570 via a serial link.

I'm preparing to breadboard a design I saw at:

<http://www.schmartdeveloper.org/tiki-index.php?page=johnday&bl>

This uses an FT232 for USB-to-RS232, and the NXP SC18IM700 for
RS232-to-I2C. I actually bumped into this while investigating an
in-circuit EEPROM programmer, but it seems this should work quite nicely
for the '570 or any other I2C device. The circuit also contains
provisions for controlling the GPIO pins on the SC18IM700, which could
be useful for controlling other stuff in the vicinity.

The SC18IM700 uses simple text messages for communicating with an I2C
device. This could be done manually with Hyperterminal (or whatever) or
somewhat automatically with any program that includes serial
communications. The FT232 will show up as a COM port, usually COM5, in
an XP device manager, using FTDI's d2xx drivers.

I'm probably oversimplifying, and I'm sure there are some surprises
lurking, as they alway do. But I think the theory looks sound. I'll know
better in a couple of days after I've had a chance to breadboard
something. And both chips are available off-the-shelf at Mouser.

5mV into 50 ohms is -33dBm. That is very, very strong. I would read
+40 over S9 on a calibrated S meter.

The softrock kits operate down in the microvolt range (even lower if
you have the LT6231 op amp) depending on your sound card.

5 mV ?? That is a really loud signal. The Softrock will go down to 1
microvolt or less. If you are using it above 20 meters, a pre-amp may help
for the weak signals. On the lower bands, the noise is higher than the
sensitivity.

I have stated this several times and it's mentioned several times at
the web site but apparently it's not enough.

DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY UNTIL I SAY THAT IT'S OK TO DO SO.

I hope that is clear enough, you may be trying to help but all it
doing is causing me more problems. The amount listed on the site is a
ESTIMATE, I'm selling the parts at cost with 0 markup so all expenses
must be paid for, I don't know all the expensed and the mailing cost
until the parts get here and I can weight them. So please do not send
money at this time, all it does is more work for me at this time
since I now have to keep track how much you sent versus what the final cost is.

DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY UNTIL IO SAY SO, PLEASE.

Anyone else play around in the SSB DX Contest with 1W Softrock?

I thought I would try a bit for a couple hours with 1W on 20M. Sure
was a lot of fun and thought I would give a run down of my
experiences. Very tough to make/break any pileups with 1W. I ended
up working quite a few stations with some "timed" calls. If a station
isn't very strong, or is real popular, just forget it. Not only do
you have to make the contact with 1W but with so many KW signals on
the band it is tough.

Some of the "contest" stations have great ears. If there is a lull in
the action that is the best time to give a call or two.

Here is a run down of some countries worked in a couple hours on SSB:
V2,PJ2,VP5,TG,F,HI,P4,YV,PJ2,8P,YV,HK,FM,TI,YN.

I made a real effort to get some others but some are just too popular
and I probably wouldn't ever get them in the middle of the contest.

It sure takes some patience, hunting, and pouncing at the right time.
I have a small 3ele yagi up 30 feet and with 1W it is hard to beat
anyone.

Hope others try 1W SSB in a contest. You won't do too well but it

Congratulations Mike,
You' ve done a nice job! I did some contesting with 5w in a fishing rod antenna, not in optimal conditions, but you're right, it may be a real fun to do some QSO or succeed in be called back. It has been in the last years when propagation was not very good for such things, hi; nonetheless it has been fun.
My max was being called back from ZL - on the other side of the world just under my feet, hi, - on 40m phone with 5w and fishing rod - 3 times in two years , no qso completed because of qro mess over my signals (they want to contact ZL immediately in spite of me; you know, muscle boys....) and indeed many many long phone QSOs with JA on 20 and 17m , mostly with 5w but also with 2,5 watts and a 9m fishing rod . Vy good mileage per watt indeed. If you're interested into that, you may apply for the 1000 miles per watt award; you sure have all the numbers for that! Once again my congrats and welcome to the K-30dBFC  (kilowattminus30decibelfanclub)   ';*)

The final list is out there barring some minor corrections;
http://www.softrockradio.org/smallbuy  >

There is some good news and some bad news, the good news first;

I bought some extra parts to take us to the next break so the prices are  a little lower still;

FIN1002-6M $.462 instead of the small qty price of $.99
74ACT74 SOIC $.13 instead of the small qty price of $.40
74ACT74 DIP $.182 instead of the small qty price of $.55
Resistor $.02 instead of the small qty price of $.035
LP2985 $.35 instead of the small qty price of $.69

Now for the bad news some of these items that were in stock when we started this are out of stock and in some cases we exceeded the available quantity, the worst is the LP2985 voltage regulator, it went from 1000 in stock to a 5 week wait.

I will need to look for an alternative source on a couple of items so it will affect the prices a little bit.

Double check to make sure you are there and the quantities are right, I want to order these parts as soon as possible. I will order what I can later tonight.

Again, DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY until I announce it.

Jeff,

It is series resonant, no need for load C. Just use that number. That
is all you will need. Everything they need to know is included in that
part number.

Mike,

First you may well need an RF isolation transformer. If you do use
that, put it inside the box and use an insulated RF connector. There
are BNC connectors with an insulated ground, or you could even make your
own. Also the PTT ground shield should be broken before it touches the
RXTX (or in this case box). You will be running your ground to the PC
through the sound card. The rest of the connections can be grounded.
(I am assuming here that you are using a Delta 44 with the Delta 44
interface kit and the Rocky serial interface kit. Anything else, you
are on your own.)

If you use an AC power supply to get the 12 Vdc for the RXTX, make sure
the 12 Vdc output ground of the power supply is floating, and not
connected to the AC ground. It needs to be well isolated from the AC
ground. I use an old HP 6213A lab power supply, and it works great. I
would suspect a wall wart designed for medical use would work fine as
well. Those are very well isolated from ground. If you think you have
a problem with whatever power supply you are using, just substitute a
battery for the power supply, and see if that helps with the center
spike in RX mode.

Cecil,

Third time requested (must be a dark hole somewhere):

please double my quantities shown on your present list posted. Should
be 4, 4, 2, 20, 4

Thanks!

stated, try hitting the refresh button when at the site.

By the way everyone of your emails directly addressed to me were in

Hello Cecil,

I have been trying since Thursday to get this to you. I guess your
SPAM filter caught me as well.

If it is not too late, please put me down for the following:

FIN1002-5M Quantity 2

74ACT74 SOIC Quantity 6

74ACT74 DIP Quantity 2

100 Ohm metal film resistor Quantity 20

LP2985 LDO 3.3V regulator Quantity 2

Thanks for your time and effort.

73,
Patrick KF4LMZ

Today I rewrote the N1 & HS_DIV routine and it computes in 56 ms at 10
MHZ and 5.6 ms at 160 MHz. I went to long integers for this calculation.
Then I used some logic to limit the N1 search range between N1 max and
N1 min. Works like a charm. The lower frequencies have more possible
combinations of N1 and HS_DIV so it takes longer to calculate. Before
it took 500ms to do the calculation in floating point. The RFREQ
calculation is still done in double floating point for 1 Hz accuracy up
to 160 MHz. Still fighting RF feedback which kills me if I have the
scope probes on the SDA and SCL lines. Other than that we are delighted
with the new speed. Should be able to spin an encoder and update 10 to
50 times per second depending on the frequency range. This has been a
real learning experience :-)

I wonder what is going on, most people who write to me stating that
they don't see their entries or they have not been updated to new
quantities, but when I look they are in there with the correct
quantities. But then I hit the refresh button every time I go to the page.

This page is changing multiple times a day, if you don't refresh your
browser you will be looking at an old page stored in your PC instead
of the updated page from my site, that is how browsers work. My
browser is set to refresh pages older than one hour and even then I
have to hit the refresh button or I will be looking at old data, most
browsers the default is 24 hours so you might be looking at a page
that is a day old.

I just looked, your call letters and quantities match what you just
mentioned, so have you refreshed your browser?
