Thanks Gian,

Does that dig any deeper into these switches. I'm curious if they can be
used to switch between crystals.

Do you have them as PDF's?

Would very much appreciate if someone who has an RXTX 6.2 transmitting
properly with a Delta 44 could look at the control software settings
and let me know how they are setup. I have a feeling that my missing
transmit I or Q signal is somehow related to a changed setting.
Receive works fine. Transmit did work well before some parameter
changed. Now I need to get back to the default settings.

Are you using the +4 dB or the -10 dB settings?

How is the Patchway / Router set up? (would it be possible to email me
a screen shot?)

How is the Mixer set up? (would it be possible to email me a screen shot?)

Are DMA buffer sizes relevant to this application?

I have a feeling that my missing transmit I or Q signal is somehow
related to a changed setting.

Many thanks,

Earl, 4Z4TJ

Good Morning All,

It would be possible to provide a 15m SoftRock Lite kit at a price of
$12 for US/Canada and $13 for DX where the kit price would include the
postage cost.

The 15m Lite would use 1/3 sub-harmonic sampling and would include an
LT6231 for U5 to give an RX MDS around -116 dBm. The center frequency
would be about 21.044 MHz and when used with a soundcard that can
sample at 96kHz would give 15m band coverage from the bottom on the
band to about 21.092 MHz.

Also I am thinking about upgrading the 20m SoftRock Lite kit by
changing U5 to a LT6231.

Please let me know if there is any interest in a 15m SoftRock Lite kit
or an upgraded 20m SoftRock Lite kit.

Earl,

I'll post a screen shot of the important parts of the Delta44 setup to
the files section. I've been using this configuration for Rocky and

Earl, check the diagram just posted by Bruce to the files area. Please
make sure you are not using monitor mixer as an output on the Delta 44,
it appears to be in mono which makes no sense at all.

Myself and KGK senior spent a long time trying to work out why the TX
would not balance as a result of this...

I looked for quite a while and eventually narrowed it down to the SB
Live 24! USB and the E-MU 0202. I selected the SB live because I
didn't want to introduce yet another connector style into the mix. Of
the available software, the Rocky software runs best on my Dell XPS and
it only supports up to a 96Khz sample rate so the extra speed of the
0202 was not needed. Plus the Live! USB is cheap enough that it is not
that big of a loss to move to another card, later on. My intent is to
use my SDR as a portable with a laptop, so I liked the size of the
Live! as well.

Ultimately, I would like to build a dedicated A/D, D/A PIC module and
use the USB as a data port only. I'm tired of trying to get Windows XP
to do my bidding.

Just got a NXP [Phillips] SC18IM700 Demo Board P/N OM6272 [Digi-Key #
568-3512-ND $27.38]. This is a complete RS232 to I2C controller with
some extra I/O and static RAM parts. I think it would be possible to
program the static RAM with SI570 frequency data and then use the
controller to transfer the data to the SI570. NPX has free demo
software sc18im700.gui.zip that will control the demo or read & write
directly to the I2C bus and the SI-750. Also get datasheet and App
Note AN10397 for more information. It is also possible to use any
terminal program software to write hex to the serial port [probably
will need to be scripted like a hex file and sent as a file
transfer]. The SI18IM700 chips are $2.38 ea at DigiKey [568-321-5-ND
16-TSSOP].

[v=d,t=pip,i=SC18IM700_2,fi=51854,ps=1]|[6]

{be careful of the link it split into two lines}

When I get some time I will try to generate and post a simple GW-
Basic program that will read and write the file format for the SI-570
using the SC18IM700 commands with the info from the SI57x Demo
Software.

The Silicon Labs SI57x demo software has a Excel Spreadsheet plus a
SI57x programer that will give you the hex values and detailed
instructions for reading and writing to program the SI570 for a new
frequency.

If you take the Oscilator part # info generated at Silicon labs and
insert it in the programer software it gives you the following:
RFREQ: 43.36667104
HS_DIV: 11
N1: 8
Calculated fxtal: 114.285000 [nominal - should read actual from osc]

[SI PN info: Start Freq(MHz) 56.320000 & I2C Address - 55hex 85dec]

Silicon Labs also has a neat development system called a Toolstick
Starter Kit [Mouser 634-TOOLSTICKSK $24.99] that includes a C8051F330
that should run the recompiled AN334 software. The chip is also
available in a 20pin dip as C8051F330-GP [Mouser 634-C8051F330-GP
$4.29]. I plan to evaluate this as well, but it will not be as
simple as the NXP chip.

You say "best" and "best for the money" and "reasonably priced".
What is it you want?

The "best" ones are those made for professional recording studios.
They will have XLR inputs, built-in pre-amps and are rack mountable
and have four digit price tags, and yes 192Khz sampling.

Some might argue that Apogee makes some of the best equipment
but there is room to argue. Everyone has different ears

What you likely meant was "best for under $500" or best for
under $200 or whatever budget you have.

I have been reading the mail om this one and I don't think it has been
mentioned.

If you do a System Restore in XP to a time prior to you setting TX I/Q
Balance then you return to pre adjusted state. This would happen also
if you lost the file for some other reason.

You mentioned a simple explanation, from the symptoms and information
this is it.

Bruce,

Many thanks for the pics of your settings and to all others who have
offered advice. I carefully balanced the TX IQ in Rocky with the help
of an external receiver and managed to get the images drastically
reduced so that I could easily make contacts again (worked 5 countries
in Europe this morning). Main freq is now about S9 + 20 while the
image signal is down at S3 in my shack.

Now I will try your settings and hopefully the whole issue will just
evaporate.

Tnx

Earl

Subject: A NON-math Explanation of Quadrature Sampling?
trackerdan2000
Send Email Send Email

Hello all... I am really enjoying reading and learning more about DSP
and how S/W defined radios work. I'm an old hardware dog, and am
having a little trouble associating the math and theory with the
actual operation of quadrature sampling.

I would really love to understand a description of the sampling
process from a physical standpoint, i.e., I have a wire with a signal
on it that I can see on an o'scope. I sample (take the voltage of the
signal at a point in time) that signal at a sample rate that is higher
than twice the highest frequency of the signal. With non-quadrature
sampling, I would get a list of numbers (representing a voltage), with
each number associated with a sample time, that represents the
original signal over the time I took the samples.

But what happens if I want to quadrature sample the same signal?

Do I do the same sampling as above, only when I take a sample, I then
take another sample 1/4 of the sampling period (i.e. 90 degrees) after
the first sample? If these two (real?) samples make up the "same"
quadrature sample, do I now have a list of samples, only with each
item in the list consisting of two numbers (each representing a
voltage), and each associated with the sample time? If so, are these
two numbers what make up the real and imaginary parts of a complex
number that is used to describe the original signal?

I guess another way to ask my questions would be this: If I had a
strip of graph paper on which was printed four seconds of a signal
(similar to an EKG strip showing a heartbeat) and I knew that the
highest frequency component of that signal was three hertz, and I
decided I wanted to quadrature sample that signal at 10 times per
second, and all I had was a pencil, ruler, and a piece of paper, how
would I go about gathering the samples?

Sorry if these questions are too simplistic, but I seem to be stuck
trying to get past this. Any clarifications or guidance would be
greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks, Dan

is to accept that it takes some care to make it look nice. Be
careful to avoid kinks (tight loops). To do it next to perfect maybe
takes 20% more time than doing it sloppy. It also helps wearing
binocular loupes (at least if you like me past 40...)

there are some illustrations at

http://www.kitsandparts.com/howtowindtoroidswithoutpain.php

I missed to twist the wire 3 turn/inch before putting the bifilar
winding in but it worked ok anyway.

Tony gave a good explanation in his post

As I commented in my original post, I have seen 2 live 24's working
together in a system based on win2k - a well known OEM non-linear
video editing suite aimed at the low of the pro market uses exactly
that configuration and until a few days back was sat not 10 feet away
from me at the other end of the shack.

The two cards also work correctly when dual booting into linux.

Ive not had chance to do any further tests yet, but I have had a
number of suggestions from several groups as to how to get this working.

Fingers crossed!

I think the simplest explanation that is still correct might be this.
I'd be happy if there were an even simpler why to say it..

1) In a conventional receiver the LO produces only a sine
wave. In other word the output of the LO is a function of
time that can be written as "sin(t)". In a quadrature system
to LO has two outputs. Both look like a sine wave but one is
90 out of phase with the other. But can also say one output
is a sine wave and the other is a cosine wave. So two
outputs, two funtions of time "sin(t)" and "cos(t)"

2) In the quadrature system the RF signal is split and sent to
two mixers. One is hooked to the each of the LO's output
signals. Each mixer acts just like a conventional mixer but
only we have two mixers each using a slightly different LO
signal

3) The output of each mixer is sampled at the same time
yielding two numbers. One number can be thought of as the "real"
part of the signal and the other as "imaginary".

Mine is crossed to. It would be really sweet if we could use two 24bit
live. I got mine for $10 incl shipping. To have two would enable the
side tone etc to work right. Right now I am limited to 48kHz if I like
to use side tone due to the in-built sound card.

I got several comments about how fast the buys have been moving and
that some were not able to order in time. I agree with you. In fact,
if you think it is moving fast, you should be in my shoes. The other
complaint is that it was not clear when the second "open" period began.
I agree that while it was stated, it was not totally clear unless my
status was read completely. Sorry, I should have made it more clear.
The problem is that the minimum order is 50 parts at a time. I have no
control over that. When, I warned that the 50 point was getting close,
I was flooded with orders and had to shut it off before it went past 50.
So, now what do I do? I have eliminated the A option and the only part
that I will work with is the LVDS part since it is the most popular.
One possibility is that we now move to groups of 25. The price for one
goes from $18 to $22 and 2 goes from $33 to $41 and so on.
So, those who missed the previous orders, are you still interested?
Please email directly to me rather than the whole group.

Yes, I'm still interested and I'll stick with buying two.

Suggestion: if you get more than 50 "Yes" replies to this question,
take one more order of 50; otherwise go to 25. I get the impression
from what you wrote that another batch of 50 is a possibility.
