Band Pass Filters - Greater than an Octave OK?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #34551 of 37863 |
Greetings:

I have noticed band pass filters designed for SDR applications limited
to less than an octave in band width and others that that are just a bit less
than two octaves.

I imagine the reason for less than one octave bandwidth filters is to
avoid a possible receiver spurious response at the second harmonic frequency
when operating close to the bottom edge of the passband for the filter in use.
But since the second order harmonic from a square wave LO as used here would be
inherently low I wonder if the need to limit the bandwidth to less than an
octave has been found unnecessary?

Since the SoftRock v9 filter design leans towards the two octave
bandwidth design I wonder how well these receivers perform with regards to any
second harmonic spurious responses when operating near the bottom edge of the
filter passband?

Has anyone documented any spurious response measurements for the
SoftRock receivers?

Can anyone here point me to relevant information on the Internet?

Thanks in advance for any help!

73 & Enjoy,
Tom, VA7TA

Hi Tom, I have not noticed any problems with the v9.0 RX responding to anything on the second harmonic of the LO (yet)! The only problem I have seen so far is...

Hi Tom, I have done a simple test by injecting a signal into the rx tuned for 80 Metres and then checking the second harmonic on 40 Metres. results as follows:...

Hi Graeme: Many thanks for your tests! I wonder what you used for the signal source? Some signal generators have a strong harmonic component which could skew...

Hi Tom, The sig gen was a Racal-Dayna 9082 and yes I agree that the harmonic content is suspect on many sig gen's. Unfortunately I don't have an HP 8640B (but...
