Welcome, Felix! Your "The Bubble Manifesto" is a
fabulous essay! Very fascinating! Thank you very much for
joining! I am sure I would enjoy seeing your bubble
activities much more than fireworks, too! I would love to
see those machines making bubbles. Since you like
kites too, I bet you would like to hear a playful
little tune called "Kites Are Fun" by The Free Design.
It is from 1967, from a self titled album, but much
easier to find on the collection CD "Sunshine Days pop
classics of the 60's volume 1". It was also featured on a
Captain Kangaroo segment. Back to bubbles, yes, it is
fascinating the effect different kinds of light can have on
bubbles. Also if you ever are in a very very cold and
quiet place outdoors, blow some bubbles and listen
carefully! :-) Do post again sometime, if you wish!

My name is Felix Cartagena. I am a kite
flyer/maker who uses bubble machines (lots of bubbles... as
much as 1 gallon per hour) to show what the ground
wind is doing. I published plans in the Summer 1997
issue of KiteLines magazine and quite a few people have
made bubble machines from them. These machines make
bubbles the size of basketballs and shoot lots of small
bubbles inside the larger bubbles. Based on designs that
you see in science museams, I created machines that
make GIANT bubbles. I call these Ephemeral Sculpture
Machines. I make bubbles at kite events, concerts in my
local State Park, community events, and for the
American Visionary Art Museam in Baltimore. Below is a
piece that AVAM ask me to write describing my bubble
making.<br><br>The Bubble Manifesto<br><br> I see bubble making as
performance art, but as one step removed. It is not the
making of the bubbles but the bubbles themselves that
is<br>the performance. By creating the apparatus that makes
the bubbles, there is no artist per se... the machine
and the vagaries of the wind create the art. Every
nuance of the wind is captured by the ephemeral film
that glimmers and shimmers, making visible the
prismatic colors of light. The forms that billow forth are
very much subject to one’s personal interpretation,
much the same as two people looking at a cloud and
seeing different things. The addition of music to
the<br>performance can influence the mind set of interpretation but
certainly is not necessary.<br>Making bubbles under the
cover of darkness is yet another whole experience.
Using a 500 watt quartz halogen flood lamp, only the
bubbles are illuminated against the velvet of the night.
As an<br>alternative light source, a strobe light
freezes the bubbles in an erie dance. As one spectator
screamed out as she came upon night bubbles,<br>“Oh my
God! This is better than fireworks”. I cannot explain
the attraction that people have for soap bubbles. It
is beyond science and is somewhere out there on an
intuitive and mystical plane. I just know I like to make
bubbles. I like to watch bubbles. and I like watching
people watching bubbles. It is unspoken harmony with the
universe.<br><br>Please excuse the spacing.... Thanks..... Felix

Yes, Talia, although I can often enjoy small or
medium size bubbles every bit as much as large ones. I
used to like bubble gum bubbles a bit more than soap
bubbles, but for the last several years at least, soap
bubbles have been my favorites. As you know, I like
balloons a lot, too. Some of my balloon pictures are still
at the yahoo clubs thefamilyballoonsclub and
balloontalkofallkindsclub. I think I will post more there sometime soon. Is
there a particular one you remember that you would like
to see again or a type that you like best? To me,
the cuter the picture, and the prettier the bubble or
balloon, the more I like it. I have had a fascination with
air filled round things that expand ever since I was
a little kid, although with soap bubbles you can do
may things with them depending on how you blow them
or how you make them. But I like seeing someone blow
a steady stream or a series of smallish bubbles a
lot too, so things like this certainly do not need to
have a growing bigger aspect to appeal a lot to me. I
like pure aesthetics of them a lot.

Thanks for the welcomeIcigonoshizuku-san. I enjoy
all types of bubbles, but my favorites are still
bubblegum bubbles. I must admit, you can make a much larger
soap bubble then you can with bubblegum.<br> It was
rumored back in the day, that you had some impressive
balloon pics, but that a falling out with a club founder
caused you to remove all of your pix from the Yahoo
clubs. Any chance on viewing some of those lost pix?

I think it is meant to be soft focus for
aesthetic effect. Thanks for putting it up! Those wedding
pictures of yours were real neato, thanks! Of course
bubbles are fun but I take them seriously, too. Of course
I love blowing real bubbles, and even better if I
am with someone doing the same and we are both
enjoying it...I got to do this last night. I like
collecting soap bubbles video because it shows other
people's individual approach, interest and style, as well
as the cameraman's choice of how to film it. If I
get new soap bubbles footage I watch it in slow
motion or frame by frame the first time, to prolong the
mystery, watching the bubbles change shape etc. I don't
have a camcorder...the footage I have came from TV
commercials, TV shows and Japanese videotapes sold in stores
there which profile a girl or girls and which I have
found many examples of them blowing "shabondama" in. If
this sounds interesting, then for a true fan like you
I would dub you my 3 or so hours of it on 2
videotapes for free, with only the request that you make
some comment about how you liked each individual
segment. If you would like this just email me, but if not
that is OK. DeAnza next 4th sounds great, thanks!

Not sure why the picture looks so distorted, but
it is a great one. Do you think it looks okay? I
just put a coupla silly pics in the default
album.<br>Soap bubble video?! Seems like I'd rather go out and
blow some real bubbles...but maybe it'd be good. Did
you take this footage yourself or did you buy it
somewhere? I would welcome you out to the field at DeAnza
next Fourth, btw.<br><br>:)<br>Mikey

Great to see you again KermitBubbleBoy! Hey I
live in Los Altos and work in San Francisco and get to
Cupertino too. Maybe I can join you at a bubble event
someday? I also am not into fireworks and I think your
bubbles make a great contrast! Bubbles can be fun to pop
sometimes but not so much the big ones. I would rather blow
and watch them! I have about 3 hours of soap bubbles
video! How about you? I guess my fave pics here are
"black and white but great sight", "in her own little
world" and "beautiful!" but I don't know which is first
second or third. I wish onlyophelia would return.
tcollins (Tim) is sick and can't use the computer much
anymore. Sometime I will post the names of my bubble toys.
Let's try to spread the word about this great club OK?
:-) I just posted anothre picture in "different

I am so glad that some of you are being SO much
more active than I am in this club!<br> I seem to get
back into bubbles every July after I do big ol' Bubble
Thing ones for the 4th of July fireworks in Cupertino,
CA (at DeAnza college). I think this is my fourth
year doin' it. It sure would be great to get a BUNCH
of people doing it....This is how I described that
whole scene to a buddy of mine earlier this month by
e-mail:<br> "I used to be bored with my in-laws every Fourth,
waiting on a blanket for stupid-ol' fireworks on the
field at De Anza. Then three or four years ago I
brought my bubble thing and a bucket of suds (literally,
mind you). The bubble thing launches 2, 3 and even SIX
foot soap bubbles into the atmosphere. I found myself
posing as a modern-day pied piper, stealing all the
children away from their parents with amazing efficiency.
So I've done that every Fourth of July since. Big
fun. It's also a nifty aesthetic counterpoint to the
militaristic bombast of the fireworks display later on (which
happens in the corner of the field directly opposite,
diagonally, from where I blow the bubbles).---Well kids,
there's hair-raising heart-stopping fearsome flaming
adrenaline to the left...and...perfect, reflective, silent,
transient wonder to the right. Never forget kids,
whatever's on TV, you ALWAYS have choices with regard to
your sensory input. THAT'S what makes this friggin'
country GREAT, DAMMIT!! DAMRIGHT!!"<br><br>Coupla
thoughts: For our "club photo" I should probably post one
of the pictures YOU guys have been so kind as to
post, but I would hate to just PICK one. How bout
checking them out and letting me know your 1st, 2nd and
even 3rd choices (that way, in case there are few
votes, we'll probably have at least have one picture get
more than one vote). I just hate to use that picture
from the BubbleThing site without giving them a direct
link (like 'click the picture,' you know....does
anyone know how to do that?)<br><br>Also, I'd love to
hear your views on popping. It seems wherever I go,
there is a large contingent of kids who insist that
popping is the proper thing to do to a bubble, and worse,
the parents of these kids generally agree! Is this
true? I always think its reasonable to ask people not
to pop the BIG ones...but if it gets too serious
with "rules", I think we're missing the point of the
whole bubble experience. Boy, can I jabber or
what?!<br><br>Come see my tiny, fledgling web
site!<br>:)<br>Mikey<br>aka KermitBubble Boy

pictures of wide-eyed kids peering through huge rainbowy
bubble-thing creations; I'll be getting around to posting some
here soon. Keep up the good work; just don't kill too
