Bummer,

It saw the numbers and did not believe it.  I was almost certain that the NW flow in My back yard killed the Katabatic flow. Good job at getting a seshin J-mac.

Anyway I'll represent and head up early today so that I can watch my homeboys play later this afternoon (it's a Cinderella story only 40yrs in the making, they'll probably blow it).

Planning a 10am departure and returning from Camas ~2 ish.

I for the life of me couldn't imagine why we had the place to ourselves, bluebird sky with 3-5" of fresh trackless POW and decent winds for a light day. Between 3-6pm it was steadily blowing mid to upper teens, although the Pine Turnoff meter read 0-0 and Deer Haven was only:

Time Wind Gust Direction
17:44 12 15 NE
16:44 13 15 NE
15:44 10 15 NE
14:44 13 18 NE
13:44 15 18 NE
12:44 15 19 NE

The proof is in the pics:

You missed a stellar day, just sayin'!!!

Hey everybody!

Given the current growth of our sport and the land access issues we face, it is once again time to come together and discuss this evolving access proposal. I just had a long meeting with my lawyer discussing options that benefit we kiters as well as the land owners. I am not going to charge forward without the communities approval so I would like to call a meeting. Please pick some dates.

Feb. 8th, or 10th, or 11th

If key people cannot make any of these meeting, then we need to plan for the following week

Feb. 15th, or 16th, or 17th

Please pass this email along to snowkiteidaho yahoo group. please email me if you can make it. Once i get an idea of number of people i will pick a place and time. Please find time to come. We as a group can make vast improvements to our area's parking, bathrooms, and legal access, but as is stands now we are on a path to destruction.

Cheers,

Hey Fellas,

Looks like Ryan was able to secure a spot at Harrison Hollow tonight at 7:30
(Tuesday).

Discussions about the future of snowkiting in Idaho. Access, Parking,
elimination/control of foreigners ;-), etc...

This is a preliminary meeting to share ideas and thoughts, so if you need to
share a thought and want to play a part please do so. The venue is not that
large so I'm not sure if it is vital for everyone to be there. I will gladly
share info from the meeting later tonight.

More importantly I think there is a chance of midday wind so I plan on heading
up.

Eddy

All - over the years I've seen problems with access for windsurfers and
MtBikers evolve, often headed in the wrong direction at first. Having a
"united front" with some positive reinforcement (parking control, spring
fence repair, good PR [e.g., Eddy approach] with the real locals, etc.) will
be critical.

I'll make the meeting....which I believe is now planned for Highlands Hollow
at 7:30. But not sure of the date...

Thanks to Ryan for taking the initiative to get everyone together! Jack

I forwarded to snowkiteidaho.

As far as dates go, pick one, I'll make it. I have an airport pick up the
10th at 9pm. But since I'm old and get up at 4:30, I ain't stayin' out much
past that in on a weekday anyway! :-)

that benefit we kiters as well as the land owners. I am not going to charge
forward without the communities approval so I would like to call a meeting.
Please pick some dates.

	 Feb. 8th, or 10th, or 11th

If key people cannot make any of these meeting, then we need to plan
for the following week

	 Feb. 15th, or 16th, or 17th

Please pass this email along to snowkiteidaho yahoo group. please
email me if you can make it. Once i get an idea of number of people i will
pick a place and time. Please find time to come. We as a group can make vast
improvements to our area's parking, bathrooms, and legal access, but as is
stands now we are on a path to destruction.

Surprisingly enough it looks like Hailey is the place to be today and tomorrow Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Wind chill values as low as -4. North northwest wind 7 to 15 mph becoming east southeast. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 7. Wind chill values as low as -4. East southeast wind at 9 mph becoming northwest.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 30. Wind chill values as low as -10. West wind between 11 and 14 mph becoming light. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph
I don't see wind on the camas today or tomorrow in the forecast BUT that doesn't mean anything

Hey all -

I'm psyched you're organizing. I have another event tonight, and can't make the
meeting at the Hollow, but wanted to let you how Winter Wildlands Alliance can
help groups get going and make a different.

WWA has relationships with National Forest and other officials all over the
region, and with elected officials at the state and national level, not to
mention media contacts. We even have a lobbyist in Washington.

Whatever direction you'd like to go (formal, informal, or something in between),
Winter Wildlands can help. We're made up of grassroots groups just like the one
you're starting, from large groups with paid staff, to tiny startups with just 2
members. Most began in response to local access or user conflict issues. Just
like kiters, most backcountry skiers I work with are not joiners and really like
their solitude, which can make organizing a group a challenge.

If you look at our website (www.winterwildlands.org), you'll see no partner
snowkite organizations listed. This is only because there aren't many in
existence, and of the very few out there, none have approached us yet. I spoke
recently with a leader of the one of the national kiting organizations recently
about us affiliating. We agreed that snowkiting is indeed backcountry riding,
and we both had a lot to gain by working together. I'll let you know where our
discussions lead.

The WWA website has tips on how to start a grassroots org. We also can help
negotiate access issues. Just say the word if you'd like to get together--we
don't charge for our services. We're a nonprofit after all.

One last thing: it's not kiting, but it's good snowy fun. Our board and staff
went to Colorado for a strategic planning session last week. Here's what it
looked like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18823458@N05/sets/72157623385938956/

Cheers -

From reading Whitney's email it looks like WWA has been through this before so no need to reinvent the wheel . I vote that the WWA is the first place we seek help if it comes to that . but I am not convinced we need to do anything at this time . My understanding is the land owners are in the strongest legal position by not acknowledging that we are there . It's a good thing that Monty's 90 year old buddy doesn't remember from year to year. I would prefer that they didn't give us any thought at all .Also I understand that planning for the worst case scenario is prudent , but really , how likely is it that someone will sue if something happens . I won't and I don't know anyone that would . And if we get 86ed from the private land we still have the Snowmobile park to use while we work things out , so that's our fall back plan .So again lets LET IT RIDE .
Okay, I will address the parking and the rest rooms too, I guess . I don't believe we could raise the money needed to accomplish this , buying ground and developing it is very far out of the realm of possibilities . A acre with gravel parking and a restroom you couldn't touch for under $75,000.00 . Just to subdivide off one acre could take one to two years and $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 that's if you could get the owner to do it because its a long arduous task . It would be nice to have more parking , I don't want to go up there some day and get aced out because the lot is full . but lets wait and see if that ever happens......

While there may be a need to be organized and have an action plan established, I feel that it would still be unwise to poke the sleeping dog, or we may find ourselves with no access sooner than later. I am going to meet with the Winter Wildlands Alliance early next week to get their read on the issue and find out how they may be able to help us.

I'm not apposed to organizing but that is a nebulas word , what do you mean by organize ? I can see doing the research i.e.. meet with Whitney and the WWA( its free ) know our options and get everyone on the same  page that makes allot of scenes . But I am hesitant to go to the land owners and try to strike a deal that most likely will blow up in our face . I for one wont vote for anything that doesn't come with a guarantee ,( Whey are you so sure land access will become an issue ? do you know something we don't ? ) Look the snowmobileors have been trespassing a lot longer then we have , and there sport is every bit as dangers as ours , and they have there far share of yahoos ,more when you add beer to the equation . So if they haven't got themselves kick off yet I feel we aren't in any worst position then they are . Lets set up a meeting with the WWA and go from there ................

A acre with gravel parking and a restroom you couldn't touch for under $75,000.00 . Just to subdivide off one acre could take one to two years and $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 that's if you could get the owner to do it because its a long arduous task . It would be nice to have more parking , I don't want to go up there some day and get aced out because the lot is full . but lets wait and see if that ever happens..... .

Hey all -

I'm psyched you're organizing. I have another event tonight, and can't make the meeting at the Hollow, but wanted to let you how Winter Wildlands Alliance can help groups get going and make a different.

WWA has relationships with National Forest and other officials all over the region, and with elected officials at the state and national level, not to mention media contacts. We even have a lobbyist in Washington.

Whatever direction you'd like to go (formal, informal, or something in between), Winter Wildlands can help. We're made up of grassroots groups just like the one you're starting, from large groups with paid staff, to tiny startups with just 2 members. Most began in response to local access or user conflict issues. Just like kiters, most backcountry skiers I work with are not joiners and really like their solitude, which can make organizing a group a challenge.

If you look at our website (www.winterwildland s.org), you'll see no partner snowkite organizations listed. This is only because there aren't many in existence, and of the very few out there, none have approached us yet. I spoke recently with a leader of the one of the national kiting organizations recently about us affiliating. We agreed that snowkiting is indeed backcountry riding, and we both had a lot to gain by working together. I'll let you know where our discussions lead.

The WWA website has tips on how to start a grassroots org. We also can help negotiate access issues. Just say the word if you'd like to get together--we don't charge for our services. We're a nonprofit after all.

One last thing: it's not kiting, but it's good snowy fun. Our board and staff went to Colorado for a strategic planning session last week. Here's what it looked like: http://www.flickr. com/photos/ 18823458@ N05/sets/ 7215762338593895 6/

No one is going to land owners to wake the sleeping giant.  I agree that gathering information is a great step.    I am just voicing my opinion and anything we can do to prepare, including meeting with the WWA sounds good to me.

Lets set up a meeting with the WWA and go from there ............ ....

I don't like a plan that involves wait and see and then act.  Land access will become an issue and I think we should organize before it does.  My 90 year old land owner won't stay 90 forever.

Hello guys,

Sorry I didn't make the meeting.  Things are still crazy busy around here still.  Additionally, I really just wanted to stop by and catch up than add any value to the meeting.  I still need to get up there and have some fun this year.

Hope the meeting was productive.

Regards,
-Jason

Joining PASA: Being a member of a national association and getting additional insurance may be a good idea (see Steve’s links below). I’d probably pay for the membership/insurance if certification was free or low cost. So what does it take to get certified if you can kite (or at least don’t need lessons)?

Joining CASKIT: being a member of CASKIT (Camas Association of Snow KITers) may also be a good idea.

To join CASKIT all you have to do is submit your name and contact information to a Secretary (KiterX?).

CASKIT goals (example only): try to

 = get along with everyone

 = preserve access

= get along better with everyone

 = avoid adverse situations

= never joke around (too much)

 = etc…..

CASKET members may volunteer for individual assignments (for example):

KiterR -  keep working on ID of farmers and other land owners. There is no doubt that at some point we’ll need this information.

KiterS -  see what insurance would cost for a club members/kiters

KiterD – see what WWA can do (but be aware, not everyone in WWA likes snowmobilers the way we do!!!)

KiterE – find out what the snowmobilers do for access.

KiterM – has significant experience at “herding snowkiters”, maybe we could try to leverage his good efforts to generate broad based support to preserve access. Regardless of involvement in CASKIT…..keep building good relations with Fairfield and other locals

Maybe these and the OKiters (any others that care) will form the “CoreKiters” of CASKIT and could select/recommend the “BigKiter”. (I just want to be aKiter, keep having some fun and try to avoid THE casket for a bit longer).

Bottom line – CASKIT (or some other appropriately named group) can organize to try to promote effort to maintain access and (as importantly) avoid actions/situations that adversely impact our sport …..by monitoring parking and traffic, controlling pets, fixing fences in spring, encouraging others to avoid (excessively) live threatening situations, smiling and being polite to the sheriff, etc. As needs and desires increase, the group could evolve/morph, and add to the list of goals/action items.

And Finally - Thanks to Ryan for setting up the kiter meeting and putting in some time to better understand the real “boundaries” of our sport.

While not everyone seemed to enjoy the event as much as I did (the beer was better than I remembered)….I think its always worth getting together to try to sort things out. It seems everyone could benefit by moving in the same general direction, without getting our lines crossed or someone doing something where they end up in a casket (and access becomes restricted)! But I understand that full consensus on what to do and how to do it will be very difficult to find.
