Rub it in and tell us you had fun. My domestic duties got in the way ;-)

Steve,

Thank you for contacting the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and your interest in the 511 traveler services information system.

We mount our roadway cameras on our Road Weather Information System (RWIS) sites.  Several RWIS sites statewide are located in very remote areas, and one of our major and costly challenges is getting dependable power and telecommunication services to these sites.  Unfortunately, “Pine Turnoff” is one such site subject to both communication and power interruptions more often than we would like, and we are working within our budget limitations to get the problems resolved.

We understand your frustration and apologize for the inconvenience.  Please bear with us, as it may take some time before we get this site working in a more reliable manner.  We encourage you to use the 511.idaho.gov website for road report information in that area.

I hope that I have adequately answered your questions.  Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to be of service.

I pussed out. I woulda gone if I found someone with more enthusiasm than me. The shitty drive to Mountain Home was the deal breaker for me. Looked like it would've been sweet in the afternoon; winds upper teens and clearing.

Three of us hit it, while a fourth never got launched due to a rat's nest of tangled lines.  The wind picked up just enough when we arrived for me to choose the 13m -just smaller than ideal for most of the time.  But the snow was really nice and there were a few moments of sunshine breaking through.

Cheers,
Mike

The sickness yesterday is impossible to comprehend. It was insanely EPIC Kiting
on buttery smooth westerly's yesterday and deep POW north of MSP. Hawk & I
crossed under the power lines and headed for the hills, if you haven't explored
out there and you're proficient enough to deal with being 5+ miles from the
road, I fully recommend checking it out.

Gullies chock full of powder, perfect rolling park style jumps and endless ramps
to access the higher peaks. Amazing 20-25mph wind and blue sky breaking thru
only added to the journey.

If you missed yesterday, I'm truly sorry for you--best DAY of the year by far!!!

No pics, sorry too busy riding and laughing at how good it was.

Jen and I were the other 2 of 3. Jen was on our 12m and I was on the 15m, good wind, excellent snow. The light was flat but with a couple of tracks in the snow you could easily spot your landing. Breaks in the clouds later in the afternoon improved visibility. It was a great day.

Steve,

As I mentioned before, the problem with the Pine Turnoff is not site hardware, nor even software issues, so much as it is power and communications reliability.

With regard to power, the Pine Turnoff site has no access to a commercial power source.  The site is equipped with a solar panel, and sufficient battery power to last for days even if that power source is cut off.  But this has not worked out as well as we might have hoped, between the lack of sunshine and snow covered panels in the winter.  The good news here is that we hope to have commercial power available there in the medium term, so with luck that will not be a problem next winter.

With communications, we are currently at the mercy of the local telecommunications company.  And while the quality of the regional network may be more than adequate for voice communications, we are finding it less than reliable for the transmission of our images.  As it currently stands, the next best option for this particular site is the prohibitively expensive continuing cost of satellite based communications.  We are continuing to explore all options for an adequate, cost effective communications solution for Pine Turnoff.

We appreciate the offer of additional private funding, but currently there exists no mechanism for ITD to accept direct contributions from the general public for this project.

This problem is very troubling to us for a number of reasons.  The reliability of the Pine Turnoff station, and indeed all of our RWIS sites, is very important to us.  Not only does public reliance on the system make this critical, but our own personnel rely on the weather data from these RWIS sites to help allocate snow plows and other winter maintenance assets during winter storms.

I had a good conversation with MH Police Officer Larry.  He was super excited to see us using the land and really seemed to care about our safety. He is a huge asset and said he was going to see what he could do about improving our parking situation. Newbie Patrick also seemed to have friendship with Larry so the more of us that get to know him and other police officers like him the better are chances of improving things.

Give a big wave to the Police force when you see them and make friends....

I'm game for meeting any time this week, next week I'm gone again.

One of the sets of skis those guys were using were some HO wakeskis.

That's what all the Hood River & Bend guys who were out in full force at Last Resort kept asking all day.

I for the life of me couldn't imagine why we had the place to ourselves, bluebird sky with 3-5" of fresh trackless POW and decent winds for a light day. Between 3-6pm it was steadily blowing mid to upper teens, although the Pine Turnoff meter read 0-0 and Deer Haven was only:

Time Wind Gust Direction
17:44 12 15 NE
16:44 13 15 NE
15:44 10 15 NE
14:44 13 18 NE
13:44 15 18 NE
12:44 15 19 NE

The proof is in the pics:

You missed a stellar day, just sayin'!!!

Bummer,

It saw the numbers and did not believe it.  I was almost certain that the NW flow in My back yard killed the Katabatic flow. Good job at getting a seshin J-mac.

Anyway I'll represent and head up early today so that I can watch my homeboys play later this afternoon (it's a Cinderella story only 40yrs in the making, they'll probably blow it).

Planning a 10am departure and returning from Camas ~2 ish.
