So i got a couple of Jon Bolt's S-ARCs in December. After several
attempts to put up the little guy and learn how to fly my first quad,
i wasn't making a lot of progress. Our jagged valley seldom gets a
steady wind and i haven't been able to even reach the top of the
continental divide due to sizeable drifts this year and gnarly
avalanche terrain. I got up on Taylor Pass for a few days last full
moon, camping at a hut, but no wind. It was sunny, warm and
beautiful the whole time. Just like a day at the beach only at 12
thousand feet. We just ended up skiing the powder meadows behind a
snowmobile as if they were lakes. For hours this went on long into
the moonlit evening.
Finally i got some wind one Thursday a couple of weeks ago while
out riding on Richmond Ridge. There are no real big areas to fly up
there so i decided to just to tie my smowmobile ski-rope to the back
of my harness and give myself a kite lesson with skis off. Well
there was a sqaw moving in and the wind was starting to pick up.
Hurricane ridge was way to windy and frightening ( imagine that )! So
i went half way down the mountain to a big meadow where the wind
wasn't so severe and seemed to be blowing fairly straight. My buddy
Joe was there to help me set up and we were airborn in a few
minutes. Facing downwind is nice but it makes it hard to see the
impendig chaos of weather approaching from behind. I'm guessing it
was blowing 10 to 20 at first. I was getting a feal for the kite for
a little while as the squaw moved in. It started to snow and the
wind went (I guess) to around 15 to 40 mph with gusts, white-outs,
whirlwinds. I got up into the window a few times and that little 460
launched me. The first time it yanked me up and over Joe's head and
slammed me down in the snow. With that example, Joe moved back out
of the way of danger. This went on for a while with five or six big
launches. The kite was super stable and we only tangled it up once.
As the storm intensified and my strength faded, amidst the laughter
and profanity i got launched one last time. This time, while i was
in the air (all 200 pounds of me plus gear) the snowmobile was yanked
and dragged around 90 degrees and a few feet backward. WOW! The
stuff that happens when ya dont got video. Thanks Jon Bolt, i cant
wait till i get another chance at it!

The wind was blowing around 15 at the hysterical site. The snow was very
forgiving. Miles upwind, miles crosswind, and miles downwind-- Idaho's
winter playground was wide open.. Steve and Darrel got lots of air off a nice
cornice they found. I followed with a few jumps of my own. The fun continued
until just past sunset.

Yes, that's Chasta, and yes, they're going to the Rodeo.  It's this weekend.

A few of us are taking next week off and "Going Where the Wind Blows."  Eddy, Steve, J and I are heading off toward Eastern ID, maybe into MT or WY...  We don't have an itinerary or anything.  We'll just check the weather and head where it looks like good kiting.  currently, we're thinking leaving Tues, maybe Wed, coming back Sunday.  Anybody interested should give us a shout.  We have a car load, but J said he'd drive if we had more people.

We are planning to hook up with Chasta and friends somewhere along the way.  At least back on the Camas prairie for a final hurrah.

No thanks....  I'll be keeping my kiting vacations to warmer climates.  Guess I just don't have the snowkiting bug yet.  But then again, I've only had an hour on the snow.

I did order a new Slingshot 5th line bar that should help me use my LEI kites on the snow a little more effectively.  Now I can park the kite by the fifth line and then use the reverse relaunch bridal to get it up.  I just don't have the cash to have both water kites and snow kites.  That's what a wife and 2 (almost three) kids will do to you.  You younger guys keep that in mind.

I am interested in giving Camas another try.  I'll have my new bar next week.  With a little pre-tuning in Boise, I should be ready to head up to Camas shortly thereafter.

ciao

Tuesday Feb 21, Snowmo Park:

Upside Down Darrel, Air Jordan, Sick-Air Steve, & Fat Eddy Had one
killer session. Winds were NW 13-23mph and very smooth. Snow was
awesome except were Snowmobs trashed it. played from 1-6pm. We also
lite a fire in shelter, nice and toasty.

Just down the road Andrew and Friend were at historical site.

Wed:

Looks like Repeat session so if you can make it up do so.

Thurs:

Wind switch, off day.

Fri:

Supposed to be NW again. so we are heading up.

Sat/Sun:

More NW so another wicked session planned.

Just to let everyone know this is typical time of year that our winds
get very regular. When it blows NW down here (Boise) it is usually
"Great" up there. Plan on being there around 3pm of best conditions
throughout the remainder of season.

Air Jordan is working on More Video so smile big when you jump over him.

Sounds like fun. I've got my new slingshot bar and checked line lengths and
functionality last night. Now I just need to get my 5th pigtails on my
kites and do a little light wind tuning (much easier to tune at Simplot
field than in 2 feet of snow near the highway).

As for your comment of "Winds were NW 13-23mph and very smooth".... Hmmm
that sounds fishy. Was it gusty or was it slowly fluctuating between those
readings. Any less than 13mph and my inflatable would be a little sloppy.

Can't wait to make it up again with you guys. I have to have at least a
couple sucessful sessions on the snow this year.

Friday looks possible...

Our trip has been canceled due to wind.  Too much wind at home to bother running all over the country looking for something better on terrain that couldn't possibly compare to what we have.

Yesterday rocked.  It was right around 20mph and pretty gusty when we started.  Special Ed, Sick air Steve and I headed out on 14s, Air Jordan on his 12.  Not much later I went in to get my 10.  OK, I got everybodys' smaller kite.  Steve and I put the 10s up, Eddy chose to do battle with the 14m all day.  J went to the 7.3 after shooting some good film.  Monty, Ryan and Chris were up also, taking turns with a trainer and a 15m Diesel.

We had a great time exploring the South side of the road on terrain that has been too rocky and brushy the past couple years.  We found all kinds of ridges for boosting BIG sick air, and sloping hills great for doing jump after jump after jump.  The terrain up there is so wide open and limitless.

Thank God today is an off day so we can recover a little for Friday!

Its not looking too good at fairfield for saturday, so I am heading
out to the desert for some kite ground boarding. I found a great spot
that is wicked fun when it blows from the SE. Hopefully tommorrow is

Another Good Day on the Prairie. A total of 10 kiters showed to play
in the last bit of smooth snow...now we just have to wait for the next
batch of POWDER, hopefully by mid week. Keep fingers crossed that the
rain down here is snow up there.

We added to Whitney to the list of "I think I Cans", She's hooked.
Great Job Whitney!!!! You really did a great job at showing us how
easy it is to figure out a power kite, then put on skis and do this
all in a matter of a couple hours. I'm jealous that she figured it out
so fast.  ;-}

I'm jealous that she figured it out
so fast.  ;-}

Crazy day of wind Tuesday...21-37mph ... oh what fun getting nailed by dime sized hail...

Forecast for wind looks good over next couple of days but it was very slush yesterday so the cold temps tonight will make for some concrete conditions. Hopefully snow will fall Thursday and Friday because Saturday and Sunday should be a great NW days.

Looks like the wind is shifting NW early and it did not really get that cold last nite so we are headed to Camas this afternoon. for some kicken NW flow and hopefully soft snow. Leaving Albertson's at 2:30

"Promising?"  NOAA says NW 6mph for the snomo park,  wwunderground says 0 for hill city.  Intellicast has 5-10 over the area  "Marginal to not a chance" is what I see so far.  I would have to see something else to convince me to go Sat.  At least some promising numbers at fairfield and deerhaven in the morning.  Sunday looks more promising E14mph.

Of course, they haven't really got it right much at all this week...

Today was wicked fun.... It seemed like everyone had a really good
time rippin it up in the morning wind. Whitney is catching on super-
fast, crazy girl, she began the session by going as far away from the
trucks as possible, then making her back upwind. No better way to
learn..... Steve and Darrel where getting awesome air off the
rollers, it was great chasing them around and working on boosting, I
think got it. Jay busted out the camera and did some work for the
future Reach for the Skies videos, getting some good stuff(nice 360
darrel). Eddie is working hard getting Whitney up to speed, but still
had time to bust a couple smooth 720's. All in all today was an epic
session in my book, thanx guys for the great time
