Jason Brickner here...  I am going to be making sales calls in South Eastern Idaho the week before.  I have received clearnace from the mothership (wife) for the weekend.  Is it too late to join in the fun.  This would be my first snowkiting experience.

Who can I call to get the details?

P.S.  If anyone needs a ride back Sunday afternoon, this is when I intend to go back to Boise.

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I was curious if there is some other good spots in the higher
elevations(around cascade, garden valley?). I am beyond excited for
this years snow season and would like to go ride soon......

by the way, I am Hawk. I have met a few of you, but for those who do
not know me, I am relatively new to the sport. I currently do a lot
of mountainboarding out at dry lake, and have kitesurfed some out at
CJ strike. Let me know if anyone knows of some great spots

thank you

I don't you'll find more than 3' on the prairie.  Pretty f---in' thin.

Hey Hawk,

Alas most all fo our searches for other good kiting spots have not been very profitable.
Camas sits at about 5500ft, and is well exposed, so you have to go a long ways to get anything better.  Here's some of the sites we have tried in the past.

We have had minor success between Sunvalley and Stanley.  There are a few wide spots that are a little higher and seem to get snow a little earlier, and get some wind. Unfortunately, its a long way to go to get skunked and we haven't mastered the wind predictions for it.

We have also tried West of Stanley.  There are some excellent high meadows that I am sure are thick with snow already, But we have been skunked EVERY time we have gone up there.  Some of them good wind days in Boise, but barely a breath up there.  All we can figure is that the cold air settles in the valley and keeps the wind from blowing at ground level.  And again, its a long way to go to get skunked

Jay has had some success up around McCall last winter.  Steve says that up 'till this weekend you had to go pretty much to McCall before you hit snow.  The wind has been hard to predict there as well.

Tom has flown out of bounds at Bogus a few times, but it sounds like if the lifts aint runnin' it'd be bitch to get the sites.  Currently, they only have about a foot of snow.

Garden Valley is actually lower than Camas at something in the mid 4000s.  I drove through there yesterday.  There wasn't much.

Right now,  The only spot I know that has any potential is Bannner Ridge, between Idaho City and Lowman, but it is "experts only" as you must contend with scattered trees, stumps and shrubs. There is nearly 3 feet of snow.  I have no idea about the wind though.  Yesterday it blew 5-15.  Mostly 5 or less.  we were Xcountry skiing.  I don't think I would've wanted to mess with a kite.  Alas, the Moores Crk Summit weather station doesn't report wind.  But if you XC ski, at least if you get skunked, your day's not a total loss.

I went to Optimist Field Saturday morning and was able to ride for about half an
hour. There was about an inch of patchy snow on about half of park. It is
amazing how little snow is needed to have some fun.

I have a friend who went over to Sun Valley this past week. I will ask him
today if he noticed how much snow there was in the Camas and report back.

Jason here....

I would like to meet up with you guys on Friday afternoon/evening.  I will be finished with sales calls around 3:00PM on Friday and located somewhere between Idaho Falls and Pocatello. A possible rendevous could be around Tremonton, UT where I84 joins with I15.  Or I could plow on ahead to somewhere near Salt Lake City and get us a room or two.  Let me know.  I will be driving my 95' Volvo Sedan.  I will have room for extra gear/people if you are getting on each others nerves. ;-)

I plan on leaving Sunday afternoon no later than 2-3PM to get us back to Boise before midnight.

Let me know...

WOW... Just an inch and your riding? Were you on skis or snowboard? I was
thinking of Columbia Viliage with some old rock skis but thought.... "that
couldn't be enough snow". I'll have to give it a try next time.

WOW... Just an inch and your riding?  Were you on skis or snowboard?  I was
thinking of Columbia Viliage with some old rock skis but thought.... "that
couldn't be enough snow".  I'll have to give it a try next time.

I went to Optimist Field Saturday morning and was able to ride for about
half an hour.  There was about an inch of patchy snow on about half of park.
It is amazing how little snow is needed to have some fun.

I have a friend who went over to Sun Valley this past week.  I will ask him
today if he noticed how much snow there was in the Camas and report back.

Pretty far. Lodge is on the southern shore of Georgetown lake. Georgetown lake is about 40 miles west of Butte MT, which is at the intersection of I-90 & I-15.

Lake is a shade larger than CJ, located in a scenic area (though not as scenic as the georgetownlakelodge_com home page picture portrays), and is sort of at the top of a pass, instead of in a basin.

Discovery Basin ski area is nearby. Has good reputation, but never tried it. Similar elev. and vert. stats to Bogus.

P.S.

Am personally convinced skis work better on very shallow snow/grass, but would guess Eddy used board (still with big grin).

Just talked to my buddy who was in Sun Valley this past weekend.  Looks like it has been raining on the Camas Prairie.  He reported no snow accumulation.  But it sounds like everyone will be having a good time in Utah.  I have other obligations and won't be able to attend.

Thanks
