Still new to snow kiting and curious about coverage needed. Pine Cam shows a lot of uncovered rocks and grass.  Are there areas to find better coverage or is it enough right there?  Rock skis?

It looks like there is plenty of coverage right now… Most of the area has grass and sagebrush buried under the snow. The snow gets drifted into the valleys of the hills and is usually fluffy and wonderful. This time of year you just avoid the rocky areas…

Cool first one out. However that's a lot of pressure. That means I have to be the last one out too right? Yesterday snowboarded on a fresh 10 inches. This morning skied on a fresh 8 inches. It's been a great  three days, especially since yesterday was my birthday.

[Attachment(s) from Bill Binegar included below] I know we are waiting for pictures from Greg in Hawaii but this'll have to do for now. I had some difficulty staying up wind because there was only about 3 inches on top of ice. Hard to get Gription. The ice also made it scary to jump. Anyone make it to the Camas Prairie?

Anyone got any experience kiting up there? I see there has been kiting on the lake now.

Any good weather stations you guys look at in that area? As of now, it doesn't appear the wind is looking great, but oh how mountain weather can change.

If anyone wants to go kite or if there is no wind go for some sledding, give me a call. I may not have great service at the cabin, and definitely no access to email so texting might be the best method.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Am I reading things right that Thursday 12pm-5pm looks like some good wind on the prairie?  Got family in town so we are trying to plan out the next few days and I don't want to choose the wrong day.

I have checked the weather up there about every day the past week or so its been blowing E and in the teens every time , except yesterday it started in the teens and quickly reached the mid 20s east also . Thursday turns NW but the temps stay relatively high so no proverbial buddle , this could be a turn around day because Friday goes East again , so wind likely , but you mite bring your cross country  skis or head to Soldier Mt they say this is there best opening ever . that is if no wind . also I wouldn't be surprised if it stays east up there either . If there is storm activity there is usually wind , but its hard to forecast it up there . so as you can see this doesnt help allot , this helps  http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/Winds/Aloft.cgi?location=BOI&Submit=Get+Forecast&hour=06&course=azimuth  but it only go out 24 hrs and it not 100%

Hey Bill , Rusty and other Cascadians,
Garrett will be snowmobiling on top of West Mountain today and can give us a
report of conditions. I assume there is plenty of snow on top. The real
question is can we access the open ridge we use for kiting. There is a long hill
climb that protects the area from casual recreational snowmobilers and it is
extremely tough to climb in new or deep snow. There is a backdoor access trail
but we couldn't find it last season.
We dubbed the area Shangrala because it is in this spectacular remote hidden
valley overlooking southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon. We have only kited
there once and I don't think anyone else has ever kited there since.
I am going to Cascade on Thursday evening or Friday. Looks like we may have
some clearing of the weather. We would love to hook up with any and all if we
get some wind. Our cabin is at the south end of the lake. The South lake
narrows and creates a venture effect near our cabin. It is where the Sailboats
always have their regattas in the summer. So if the wind is marginal it is a
great place. They keep a parking lot plowed at the Blue Heron boat launch 2
miles south of the golf course. Our cabin is opposite Blue Heron at 12 Ridge,
Cascade ID.

If you want to see pictures of Shangrala;

Hey Bill , Rusty and other Cascadians,
Garrett will be snowmobiling on top of West Mountain today and can give us a report of conditions. I assume there is plenty of snow on top. The real question is can we access the open ridge we use for kiting. There is a long hill climb that protects the area from casual recreational snowmobilers and it is extremely tough to climb in new or deep snow. There is a backdoor access trail but we couldn't find it last season.
We dubbed the area Shangrala because it is in this spectacular remote hidden valley overlooking southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon. We have only kited there once and I don't think anyone else has ever kited there since.
I am going to Cascade on Thursday evening or Friday. Looks like we may have some clearing of the weather. We would love to hook up with any and all if we get some wind. Our cabin is at the south end of the lake. The South lake narrows and creates a venture effect near our cabin. It is where the Sailboats always have their regattas in the summer. So if the wind is marginal it is a great place. They keep a parking lot plowed at the Blue Heron boat launch 2 miles south of the golf course. Our cabin is opposite Blue Heron at 12 Ridge, Cascade ID.

Not enough coverage yet?  Rusty's confidence on Monday had me convinced to give it a try tomorrow.

And it's official.....the Camas is open for business. 12-14" base at Feather Flats, no rocks but a bit bumpy out there. Watch for Frozen Cow Pies.

Even Hysterical site is looking good, we're about 6" from the whole damn prairie being rip-roaring for full-on Snowkite rippage.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Snow was 10" of cold smoke on top of a 2" crusty frozen base. Started out at 3pm
on a 12.5M and promptly switched to the 16M due to eating too much over the
holidays. Wind might have tapered off a bit, but pretty sure I'm just fat.

Built a kicker and Sessioned the Flats for awhile. Then did a Downwinder to MSP
fully-powered Kiting till sunset. Hitch-hiked back to my Rig at the Pine
Turnoff.

Stellar first-day out, beats the heck out of riding lifts and skinning
backcountry tracks.

Garrett, Susie and I had a great trip to SPI, Texas during the first week of
December. October and November are usually the best months but we lucked out
with 5/6 kite-able days. Temps were high 70's to low 80's with water temps to
match.
We wore thin mil neoprene tops only.
Susie got some great sunset photos that are worth a look.

Hi Friend,

As most of you know the six Idaho City yurts are back open after being closed 4 months.  There are lots of dates available this winter because many people who had initially reserved the yurts this winter made other plans.  In January alone, 90 nights are still available. Most of those are weekdays but it would be worth it to take a few days off work to enjoy a world class backcountry adventure.  On normal years we have near 100% capacity in January.  I am hoping to fill most of the yurts so I can get the yurt program financially stable again after losing 4 months of income.  Check out this web link: http://tinyurl.com/a8xa2x5 and it will take you directly to the "dates available" page for all six yurts. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Summer Use: You can reserve 9 months in advance so if you want a specific date this summer now is the time to reserve your yurt. $65 for the weekend and $55 on weekdays.
Have a great winter.
