Following several recent personal emails asking about the availability
of boards and controllers for Smartsockets I am writing to ask if
there is any interest in the group to join in with a group purchase
from a board manufacturer.

If you are interested please let me know, wiht the type of board you
are looking for , ZM1350/B7971 and the quantities involved. If there
is sufficient interest I will order a batch.

Hi Chris - I may be interested in more, but I need to check my stock and
finances. It would be B7971s for us, no sockets req'd.

I'd be looking at at least 8 I think. (can't remember how that works
out pricing wise)

I have been contacted by Onno Tromop, website is here
http://tinyurl.com/2cu245
who has asked if he may offer some of his surplus boards for sale,
and of course I have said yes, so I expect Onno will be making a
message about it very shortly.

I can supply microcontrollers, if Onno doesn't have sufficient in
stock.

You will need to discuss it with Onno directly, perhaps Onno can give
some prices first though.

Onno has put all of his details in the 'nixie' section of his website,
available here http://tinyurl.com/ysownb

He is currently selling boards and microcontrollers for the B7971
socket.

How many people are interested in buying ZM1350 sockets, and in what
quantities ? If demand is high enough a group buy would probably be the
best way to proceed.

Note that the pcb layout is in the files section, in Eagle format, in
case someone else felt like organising this ;-)

Hello,

Can someone please tell me how to setup the processor for the 2 tube clock?
For what I can tell, X-Tal should be used. A 4Mhz-crystal.
(Once this is done, I get an oscillation-signal on the crystal)
But how to set the reset-timer and watchdog?
I'm not good enough with the PIC-assembler to find out in the source code....
And the setup I've made doen't send out data to the smartsockets.
At least, nothing show up on the oscilloscope.
I would expect a data-bust at startup.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello Guus, I don't use the watchdog in thye code, but even then you
will need to consider changing your microcontroller. The software is
designed to run on the PIC16F88, not the F84. The software uses the
hardware serial port/AUSART of the 16f88, but the 16f84 has no such
hardware so will not produce any serial data.

If you have a copy of Picbasic you could alter the code to use a
software serial port by replacing the Hserout commands with Serout
commands, and declaring which pins you would like to use to form the
serial interface, but it may be easier just to order or buy a 16F88.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the answer.
I'll get a 16F88.
The PIC's are not that difficult, but writing some more code is a bit too
much right now.
I do know the 6502, 8085 or 8051.
But these are no PIC's.
If I do get some more spare time, I'll come to use the PIC's also.

No problem Guus, I keep meaning to do more programming in C so that
more platforms can use the same code. When will we get the time to do

Hello Chris,

Today, my 16F88 chips arrived and I programmed them.
I do get a pulse from the output, but it seems very slow. (I do have an
Oscilloscoop
of course)
The schematics I used are 2B7179.jpg and I've build my own smartsocket PCB
using a ZM1350.
The ZM's have segment 7 on. That's all.
The 16F88 is oscillating. I've used a 4 Mhz Crystal. Is this wrong maybe?
In the settings for the configuration, I've set the XT option for external
Crystal.
What could be wrong, any idea?

Hello Chris,

After checking the 16F88 programming today, I found that the setting for
the oscillator was not right.
Now the smartsockets display "CLOCK" in about 5 seconds time.
I've not figured out yet how to set the clock.

Also, there's a problem with the processors I've put in the smartsocket.
The 1350's segment 7 is always on and 14 is never on.
These two are on pins 3 and 2 respectively.
I expect I've set some option for this processor wrong as well.
Can you please shed some light on this?

I was going to write today to suggest trying the HS setting. There
you go, you did it anyway, well done!

You need the rotary encoder to be connected . The word document for
the clock talks about the menu system, which is navigated by using
the rotary encoder

That's an interesting thing to see for sure. I will remember to check
the code in the file with my board at home, but I don't recall there
being a problem and I am sure at least one other person has
downloaded the same code and used it without a problem. I will get
back to you about the code once I've verified it. I'll also check the
schematic. It's a while since I did any work on the circuit, and I
don't recall making two version ( I made 2 versions of B7971 sockets )
but it may be you have a couple of transposed pins somewhere, either
from a defunct schematic or from looking at the zm1350 upside-down.
I'll do the proverbial 'getting back to you' later today I hope

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the answer.

And of course I have a rotary encoder connected. And a seperate switch.
I couldn't get the one with a switch connected to the shaft.
My problem is that I cannot get any numbers to change when I go to settings.
But the text is displayed.
Again, I think that a setting for the options is wrong.
So just now, I've read it. (I never protect the PIC's)
The reset pin is set to external. This I fixed by connecting the pin to VCC.
But also, one of the timers (I think wtachdog) was still on.
And this will make the processor start over and over again.

On the smartsocket, it a similar problem.
The oscillator was set, so that a pin is used for clock-output and input.
But those pins (2 and 3) are used for segments.

On both these thing, I've just had a look at the programmer and the data
sheet.
At work, I have access to a much newer programmer.
So I hope to test the results this evening at home.

Hello Chris,

The smartsocket is working as it should.
Now all segments work as intended.
The text "CLOCK" is displayed on both sockets.
It takes about 1 second to cycle all characters of the word.

Rotating the decoder also selects the other menu items. (It did so yesterday)
Once set time is selected, I press the button.
And the either the displays are off and stay off, or the word "CLOCK" is
on the display. (Looks like a reset.
Keeping the button pressed and rotating, the display stays off.

So either I do something wrong in the test, or there's still an error in
the settings.

'Clock' is the first menu item. you should only have to press the
button when the word clock is displayed and the time cycling routine
should then start.

If you are able to navigate the menus and make adjustments to the time
I think it is reasonable to assume that the buttons and the encoder are
wired correctly.

There shouldn't be any other settings or fuses requiring to be changed,
nothing springs to mind at the moment. If you press the switch when the
work clock is displayed does the clock reset every time ?

Hello Chris,

Just now, I've tested again.
At power-up, the word "clock" is displayed.
This keeps repeating.
If I press the button, the display stops. But the letters are still there.
Or the display blanks.
Then I release the button.
Now, either "clock" cycles again, or the whole thing just stops.

When in "set time" or "alarm" and the button is pressed, the same, either
"clock" or hangup.

So the clock does not get passed the menu.
But it will stay in the selected menu item.
What should happen next, once the menu item is selected and the button is
pressed? Some interrrupt?

I will try another processor. I did program more than one, as I intended
to make a couple of clocks. (And the 16F88 was 5,85 for one and 2,25 a piece
for 10+)
In case of a change, I'll inform you.

Sorry I haven't managed to get back onto this more quickly Guus. For
the time being I have just uploaded the code which I had installed
on the last known good version of two tube clock which I had made.
It is in the files section, same place as before.

I am hoping to build up a clock soon toverfify that it works, or not

Hello Chris,

Still, I didn't get the clock to work.
Can you please check the configuration words?
The current ones in my processor: word 1 = 3FA9 and word 2 = 003

Sorry for the delay, had to go away for a few days of work

Guus, my programmer has two 'fuse words' which I suppose must be the
configs.

For an HS oscillator....
Word1 = 3F02  Word2 = 3FFD

For using the internal oscillator (for testing perhaps)
Word1 = 3F10  Word2 = 3FFD

Please let me know if this helps any. The 16F88 has oscillator
changeover options, as well as failsafe config bit. I could play
around with those and recompile for you if required (which might
help us both in the long run)

Hello Chris,

No problem. It's a hobby.

The 16F88 stil doesn't work.
I've tested a number of combinations, no success.
Once I press the button, the word "clock" comes back.
It looks like a reset.
Maybe the schematics are wrong in some way?
I've wired the stuff on a PCB with holes only. Very little chance of mistakes
there.
The button I use, closes the contact when pressed. Maybe this differs from
the rotary-encoder button?

And unfortunatelly'I also got another problem.
The ZM1350 PCB that I made, works fine now.
But the 7179 one I made, has the segments wrong.
When a C should be displayed, segments 9, 10, 11 and 2 work.
This goes for the other segmants as well.
So the schematics in the attachment don't match the table in version 2 of
the software. (SMARTV2)
The schematics were taken from the website and redrawn in my design package.
I did this because then I can make PDF's. And these make good prints on our
(company) laserprinter. Thus I can make a printout in normal and mirrored
that I can glue together. This makes a nice dark mask.

I looked for answers in the files section, but didn't see the info. So
I'm posting here.

First, the assembly instructions say to see Figure 2 for a list of
resistor values for various HV supply voltages, but there's no Figure 2
in the document (just 1 and 3). Does anyone know the value for a 180V
supply?

Second, I'd like to use the preferred connectors for the boards. Onno's
site says "including high quality AMP connectors" when purchasing an
assembled board. As I just bought bare boards, what connector are
people using (for both the board and the mating cable end)?

I just finished building my Smartsockets and got them fired up yesterday - :)
Wow, B7971's are *big*..

I just used a link for R31, since I'm running at 170v.

If your power supply is not adjustable, then the accurate way would be to
meter the current and choose a resistor accordingly, although I dont
quite "get it" as to how a single anode resistor can be accurate if an
unknown number of cathodes are illuminating.

AMP is a brand of connectors.. there are many different styles in their range.
I just used the ones my local electronics shop had, which are a bit tedious
to assemble since each pin requires seperate crimping and insertion into the
block.

They had another style that worked with Ribbon cable and a little tool
to "punch-down" the wires into the top of the connector (an IDC - insulation
displacement connector), but they didnt have any of the appropriate punch
tools in stock, so I couldnt use them.. after spending hours making the 36+
crimp connections, I'd choose the quicker-to-assemble IDC models and get the
tool next time unless you are only making a few sockets.

Now to figure out Pythons string-slicing capabilities to write some funky
display programs for them.. I've got as far as scrolling "Testing" back and
forwards - :)
