Welcome to Citizens for Smart Lighting San Francisco.

We're advocates for the reduction of light pollution and the promotion of well designed and appropriate outdoor lighting in both the public and private sector.

Currently, we are focused on doing public outreach, teaching various community and neighborhood groups about light pollution, imparting technical information about lighting technology and dispelling common misconceptions about outdoor lighting, and helping these groups to advocate for good lighting policy in San Francisco and Alameda counties. Preservation of the dark-sky resource along San Francisco's ocean coast, in collaboration with various environmental and neighborhood organizations, is also an important goal.

Many many cities (and whole countries) worldwide are trying hard to deal with the problems of artificial sky glow, glare, light trespass, light clutter, etc. Even in 'red states', civic leaders and the public at large are tired of decades of wasteful and thoughtless outdoor lighting practices and they're changing how they use light at night. Why does San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area lag so far behind on this issue?

Although centered in San Francisco, we are concerned about the ever-increasing light pollution throughout the bay area (and California) - so people from everywhere are welcome to join the group.
