Following up on an report from Rob Hanson about roof top Western Gull
nesting at the Bayshore Village in Morro Bay, I counted 16 chicks scattered on
the roofs this evening. All the chicks I saw were on the two story
buildings. I am aware of one previous nesting on the roof of the Morro Bay
Natural History Museum. This species has also been recorded nesting on roof
tops
in Capitola (Santa Cruz County) and probably at other coastal locations.
Still this is an interesting adaptation. I'd be interested in hearing
about other roof top nesting in SLO County (Avila, Shell Beach, Pismo Beach?)
and also from anyone that knows of previous roof top nesting at the Bayshore
Village, MB Natural History Museum, or other buildings in that area or
long the Embarcadero.
This morning there were 7 Western Sandpipers, four Least Sandpipers, and
two Semipalmated Plovers at Whale Rock Reservoir. Three Gadwall were mixed
in with the molting Mallards, ten American White Pelicans were preening in
the Cottontail Creek arm, and two adult Bald Eagles were perched in the
usual coast live oak on the north side of the Old Creek arm of the reservoir.
A Belted Kingfisher and an American Coot were new arrivals.
