Sloan Net was started in May 1993 by James Covey and Scott Schuman. Over the years that Sloan were at the centre of the indie scene in Halifax, it was known as "an on-line discussion of the east-coast Canadian indie scene."

Though based in Toronto, Sloan still have strong ties to Halifax, and consequently east-coast music continues to be discussed on this list.

Start by lurking.

When you join Sloan Net, or any list for that matter, monitor the messages for a few days to get a feel for what common questions are asked, and what topics are deemed off-limits. This is commonly referred to as lurking. When you feel comfortable with the group, then start posting.

Keep it relevant.

Keep your questions and comments focused on Sloan and related bands stories.

Edit any message that you reply to.

Clip out all the stuff that's not directly relevant to your reply. A good rule of thumb is that every message that you post should contain more lines of your own writing than lines of quoted text.

Keep complaints off the list.

If you find a message offensive or unacceptable, complain privately to the person who posted. If you are unsatisfied with their response, complain to the list-manager. That's what she's there for.
