Skunk River Paddlers
Winter 2011

The Skunk River Paddlers executive board met January 30, 2011; our first meeting without our fearless leader – Greg Vitale. Although Greg is dearly missed, we continue to move forward with plans and events.

Here’s the scoop:

1. Wednesday Night ‘Paddling at the Park’ will continue the first Wednesday after Memorial Day through the first Wednesday before Labor Day – 7:00 pm Ada Hayden Park.

2. Work continues on Skunk River Water Trail grants, maintenance projects, and clean up of the Skunk River.

3. Skunk River Paddlers will provide volunteer safety boaters for the Bluff Creek Triathlon (Sunday, May 22) and the Hickory Grove Triathlon (Sunday, August 28). Check the Central Iowa Paddlers calendar for other safety boater opportunities.

4. Jeff White and Diane Lowry are the in the process of setting up a Facebook Page for the SRPs. In the future this may take the place of a monthly newsletter.

Dates to remember:
Pancake Paddle – March 19
Spring Float – April 23
Story County Conservation Partner’s Spring Festival – May 1 - Volunteers Needed
Bluff Creek Triathlon – May 22 - Volunteers Needed
Iowa Games – July 16
Hickory Grove Triathlon – August 28 - Volunteers Needed
GAAR – September 11 - Volunteers Needed
Waffle Float – December 3

5. We still need volunteers for the Sleep Hollow Adopt-A-Park Schedule:

Jan – Volunteer Needed
Feb – Volunteer Needed
March – Stash the Trash
April – Volunteer Needed
May – Rick
June – David
July – Gary
August – Diane
Sept – Jeff
Oct – Cindy
Nov – Volunteer Needed
Dec - Rick

If you want to help pick up trash at Sleepy Hollow Access (across from Ada Hayden) please contact rickdietz@.... The summer months are especially busy, unfortunately that means more trash to clean up. If you would like to help with extra clean up during those months it would be appreciated.

6. The placement of the Trout Net block at Ada Hayden (under the bridge) will be removed in the Spring and put up again in late Fall 2011. This is to stock trout at Ada Hayden.

7. SRP Sunday Winter Hikes continue. Contact Jeff White at jeffhwhite@... for more information.

8. Remember to check the Central Iowa Paddlers calendar for more paddling opportunities. Don’t forget to visit the CIP table at Iowa PaddleSport EXPO February 11, 12, and 13 at Canoesport Outfitters in Indianola.
