We have uploaded an article by Sri Swami Krishnanandaji Maharaj titled
"The Ontological Argument in Philosophy and Meditational Techniques." In
this article, Swamiji explains to us the various arguments by philosophers
on whether it is possible for a finite being to contact the Infinite. This
article is at:

DO NOT BE MISERLY: After Satsang the Master gave the following advice to a
party from South India, "Do plenty of charity to the poor and destitute.
Do not close the doors and eat!"

Someone among them replied, "We take food daily only after feeding a
person."

"That is good," remarked the Master, and further exhorted, "give your
servants the same kind of coffee which you yourself take. Do not add water
to the remains of the coffee powder which you used for your coffee and
then give that to your servants as some miserly people do."

The Master then took leave of them, requesting them to go to bed after
doing Japa of Sri Ram.

Namaste!

Tomorrow (Nov. 30) is the birthday of the Bhagavad Gita. To celebrate this
occasion we uploaded two articles on the Bhagavad Gita. The first is by
Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj titled "Gita Jayanti". In this
article, the Holy Master describes the glory of the Bhagavad Gita and how
its birth is celebrated at Sivananda Ashram. This article is at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/religions/gita_siva.htm

The second discourse is by H.H. Sri Swami Krishnanandaji Maharaj. The
title of the discourse is "The Gospel of the Bhagavad Gita". In this
discourse, Swamiji explains the fourfold conflicts we face, i.e. conflict
with other people, conflict with ourselves, conflict with Nature and
conflict with God, and how we can resolve them with the teachings of the
Bhagavad Gita. This article is at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/religions/gita_krishna.htm

There are now two sites with news and information about Swami
Sivananda Centenary Charitable Hospital at Pattamadai, India. They are at:

VARIETY OF MISERS: Sri Pattamma, a great devotee of the Master, came for
his Darshan. The Master enquired of Sri Govindaswamy, who had close
connection with Sri Pattama's family before he came to the Ashram, "Have
you attended on her properly?"

"Yes, Swamiji."

"What have you given her?"

"I have not given her anything but I have talked to her."

"You have only given her smiles and laughter. It is called 'laughing
donation'. Many people come here. They just speak some sweet words to me,
laugh and go away. They give me only 'laughing donation'!"

All were in mirth on account of this humour.

The Master added some more. "Do you know the varieties of misers?" he
asked Swami Sadananda, and himself answered, "Wonderful misers, confirmed
misers, registered misers!"

TRUE SAINTLINESS: "Let it drink," came the prompt and spontaneous command
of the Master, as someone was trying to frighten away a monkey that was
drinking the water kept for the use of the office staff.

The person who ran with a stone halted, let the monkey drink its fill and
then quietly brought another bucket of water from the Ganges.

"You cannot judge a man's heart from the big charity that he does and the
huge hospital that he builds. Watch for little incidents such as these.
When you have brought water for a good purpose and a monkey happens to
spoil it, how do you react during the first split-second? What is the
first thought that arises in your mind? What is the very first impulse?
That determines whether you are a real saint or not."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Goodness is good. To live is to turn away from evil (reverse spelling).
But that is not enough, for "live" contains in it the seed of all evil
(anagram of veil )--"i" (ego). When that "i" is replaced by its
self-negation "o", live becomes "love" which is God." - Swami
Venkatesananda

"Special Insights Into Sadhana" series. The second booklet consists of
talks during festivals that commonly take place during the month of
December.
The title of the talks are:
1) The Gita Yoga
2) Their Fiery Call to Us
3) The Call of the Great Ones
4) The Call of Dattatreya

This booklet is available for download from

We have also uploaded an article by Sri Swami Venkatesanandaji titled
"Swami Sivananda's Unique Way of Teaching". This article consists of many
interesting anecdotes of how Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj
imparts his teachings and takes care of spiritual aspirants. Devotees will
surely be inspired by Holy Master's concern for our spiritual well-being.

THE HIDDEN ENEMY: Sri X. told the Master that she would be observing
silence and would perform worship for some days.

"That is unnecessary here. Talk a little. Try and avoid unnecessary
discussions and idle gossip. That will do. All essential talking must be
done. There is no loss in it," said the Master and, after a brief pause
added, "Control anger. Avoid irritability."

Everyone was puzzled as to why he said this.

Sri X. replied, "Swamiji, I have no worry on that score. I do not have
these defects."

"Oh! Wonderful! Then you need not do Sadhana!" he said laughingly. "It has
to be seen only when you are provoked. Most of us are peaceful and patient
when we are not provoked, but when we are, then the real inner nature
manifests itself. You may call yourself a fool, but when another person
says so it would be a different matter. And if he says it when people are
present, there would be a very violent quarrel.

"Supposing during a public meeting where thousands of people are present,
someone says that you are a fool. You cannot imagine the state of your
mind. It can be tested only when the ego is touched. Until then everything
is perfect. All Sadhana is intended to root out this hidden enemy. This is
the special purpose of Karma Yoga."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Life is the greatest gift of God. Life is a priceless pearl. Life is an
art, the art of self-adjustment with the entire creation. Your life is
incomplete without spiritual consciousness. The grand aim of human life is
to attain God. This is your foremost duty." - Swami Sivananda

Namaste!

We uploaded 3 articles to the web last week. The first is by Holy Master
Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. The title of the article is "My Religion,
Its Technique and Dissemination". This inspiring article from
"Autobiography of Swami Sivananda" explains why Holy Master started The
Divine Life Society. In this article, Holy Master also gives many useful
suggestions on how to hold Satsangs (spiritual meetings). This article is
at
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/religions/siva_religion.htm

The second article is by Sri Swami Venkatesanandaji Maharaj titled
"Surgeon Sivananda's Egodectomy". As with many articles by Swamiji, this
article also draws many practical examples from the life of Holy Master on
how to removes the ego. This article is at
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/saints/siva_ego.htm

The third article is titled "Guru and Disciple" by Sri Swami
Yajnavalkyanandaji Maharaj (this is the famous eye doctor Gurudev Sri
Swami Chidanandaji alluded to in his letter in October). In this article,
Swamiji explains to us how to be an ideal disciple and receive the
blessings of the Guru. This article is at:

SWEET WORDS WILL PAY: A certain visitor wanted a photo of the Master, but
there was none available in the office of the size he required. The Master
said to him, "Go to Saradananda and ask for it. He will be busy. So first
prostrate to him and speak some sweet words, then convey to him your
requirement. This is my method!"

The visitor agreed to act accordingly.

"Bless that man who curses you. Pray for that man who tries to harm and
persecute you. Serve that man who speaks ill of you. Love that man who
wants to injure you. Embrace all. Serve all. Love all. Develop Atma-Bhava,
Narayana-Bhava. The two currents of Raga and Dvesha (likes and dislikes)
will perish by themselves." - Swami Sivananda

Namaste!

We have uploaded two books in celebration of the upcoming Christmas
festival and New Year. The first is "Life and Teachings of Lord Jesus" by
Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. The following are the chapters
in this book:
1. Life of Lord Jesus

5. Parables of Lord Jesus
6. A Symposium (consisting of lectures by Swami Sivanandaji, Swami
Chidanandaji and Swami Krishnanandaji)

This book is indeed a treasure for all devotees of the Lord. The second
book is Gurudev Sri Swami Chidanandaji's "Special Insights Into Sadhana
No. 3". This booklet contains Gurudev's early morning meditation talks
during Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year. The title of the talks are:
Thy Kingdom Come
Thy Will Be Done
Heaven Is Where God Is
Have Divinity In Your Mind And Heart
Nothing Is Impossible For Faith And Sincerity
Worship That Is Dear To The Lord

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all devotees of the Lord a
Merry Christmas and a Glorious New Year.

ESCAPISM DOES NOT PAY: "A woman was crying aloud with labour pains. The
husband quietly approached and tried to pacify her, 'My dear, even if you
cry yourself hoarse, you alone have to deliver the child !'. And she grew
calm and delivered the child without much more ado," said the Master
amidst laughter, to explain the dictum that we should do our duties
cheerfully.

"There is another interesting story to illustrate the point," he
continued. "A bull was once disgusted with the treatment meted out to it
by its owner. How long must I plough in the field, it thought. It ran
away. After walking a few miles it chanced to come to another field.
Through an accident one of the bulls of the farmer there was injured.
Seeing the stray bull lying beneath a shady tree, the farmer promptly
caught hold of it and yoked it to the plough. And the bull silently
ploughed the field, understanding its duty aright.

"Similar was the experience of a sensitive underwear, which reflected on
its sorry fate with disgust and anger. It flew away from the clothes line
and was discovered in the backyard of a house miles away. A resident of
the house, a poor man, thanked his stars for the windfall and promptly put
the underwear to the only use for which it was meant.

"No one will profit by shirking his duty. The omniscient Lord cannot be
deceived. If you escape from your duty at one place, the very thing will
be waiting for you wherever you go."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Without the help of meditation, you cannot attain knowledge of the Self.
Without its aid, you cannot grow into the divine state. Without it, you
cannot liberate yourself from the trammels of the mind and attain
Immortality. If you do not practise meditation, the supreme splendour and
fadeless glories of Atman will remain hidden from you. Tear the veils that
cover the Soul by practising regular meditation. Rend asunder the five
sheaths that screen the Atman by constant meditation and then attain the
final beatitude of life." - Swami Sivananda

"World-Peace Through Inter-Religious Understanding" is the title of the
discourse this month. This talk was delivered in 1984 by Gurudev Sri Swami
Chidanandaji Maharaj to the opening session of the Assembly of the Sixth
World Conference on Religion and Peace, U.S.A. Gurudev's call for peace
and understanding urgently needs to be heeded now at a time when a number
of nations in this world are engaged in warfare. This discourse is at:

MASTER'S SPIRIT OF SERVICE: Swami Nityanandaji of the Ramakrishna Mission
came with Swami Ajeyanandaji Maharaj, who had just returned from the West.
Swami Ajeyanandaji recalled his close association with the Master while
they were both residing at Swarg Ashram during their Sadhana period.

"Swamiji," he said, addressing the Master, "you were robust in those days.
You were ever busy and dynamic, always eager to serve and serve all. I
remember how you used to volunteer to help Sadhus and sick persons. Two
instances I still remember when you spent out of your own pocket to send
patients to Lucknow for hospitalisation. In another instance you had
several cottages of Sadhus repaired at your own expense--all this when you
yourself were living on alms. It is that spirit of service that has
manifested itself today as this great institution."

Continuing, Swami Ajeyanandaji said, "Swamiji, you were so full of humour
in those days."

"Even now I am. I have written a couple of books also on humour."

The Master read a few of his humorous poems which made them all laugh
heartily.

"Yes, and whenever I felt depressed, it was you who brought me cheer. I
can never forget my close association with you during the year and a half
I stayed at Swarg Ashram."

After detailing his work in England and the United States, Swami
Ajeyanandaji said, "Swamiji, even in New York I have had the pleasure of
meeting several of your followers, so also in England. To many I have
given a virtual discourse on your life and teachings."

-----------------------------------------------------

"When you are in the burial ground, you make various resolves thus: 'I
will lead a virtuous life: I will do more Japa, more meditation: I will
never hurt other's feelings.' But, as soon as you come back to the house,
you forget everything. This is Maya. Sometimes the husband and the wife
quarrel in the house, on account of some friction and lack of
psychological unity of hearts; the husband wants to abandon the wife,
renounce the world and embrace Sannyasa. Again she smiles and he clings to
her like a leech! This is Maya. So powerful is Maya's influence over the
poor deluded Jiva. But the Lord has assured you in the Gita that if you
take refuge in Him, He will enable you to cross this Maya very easily." -

There are now more books at Sri Swami Krishnanandaji's newly redesigned
website. The books are:

1) The Yoga of Meditation. An exposition of the meditational process.
Swamiji gives a most wonderful introduction as to why one takes to the
practice of meditation.

2) Sadhana The Spiritual Way. The methodology of actual spiritual
practice.

3) The Yoga System. The technique of the practice of Yoga.

4) The Song of God Almighty. A subject-wise poetic rendering of the
Bhagavadgita.

5) The Struggle for Perfection. On the relevance of all events to the
cosmic purpose.

Swamiji's website is at
http://www.geocities.com/~sriswamiji/

We have also uploaded an article by Swamiji to our site. The title of the
article is "The Individual Nature". In this article, Swamiji equips us
with a proper understanding of how our instincts for food and sex
operates. This understanding is very important as Swamiji says "any unwise
meddling with this urge, without properly understanding its deeper
meaning, may make it run riot and ruin the individual attempting to
control it." Swamiji also explains the working of our rational urges (i.e.
desire for knowledge). This article is at

THE MASTER'S WISDOM: It was 9 a.m. A group of devotees from Malaya and
some other visitors waited eagerly in front of the Master's cottage. When
the doors were opened all rushed to have his Darshan.

In the midst of the crowd there was an aged, poor and diseased person.
Somehow he came forward and sat in front of the Master. After explaining
his difficulties he demanded twenty rupees. The Master, in his boundless
compassion, took pity on him but gave only twelve. Again the old man
pleaded for twenty. The Master flatly refused and asked Sri Satyagyanam to
give him a tin of milk powder and coffee.

All were surprised to see this unusual attitude of the Master who refused
the man the amount he demanded. "He has cultivated the bad habit of
drinking," explained the Master. "If I give him more money he will drink
more and spoil his health."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Kindly do not delay. The spiritual seed must be sown in you now, when you
are young. You must offer beautiful flowers, a pure mind to the Lord--not
a rotten, tainted mind later on." - Swami Sivananda

Gurudev Sri Swami Chidanandaji's New Year message has been uploaded to our
site at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/messages/nymessage99.htm

In this message, Gurudev requests all of us to devote one hour every day
in meditation, to the projection of peace thoughts so that the present
troubles and turmoils of the world may cease. The following prayer by our
ancients may be used for our meditation:

"May peace be unto all the quarters! May peace be unto the skies! May
peace be unto the earth! May peace be to the waters of the earth! May
peace be to the medicinal herbs and all plants on earth! May peace be to
the celestials! May peace be to Brahma, the Creator! May peace be upon
Peace itself!"

Gurudev's recent letter is now in HTML at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/announce/dec98_letter.htm

We have also uploaded two articles to celebrate the festival of Makara
Sankranti or Pongal which took place on the 14th of January. In Sanskrit,
Makara Sankranti means the time when the sun crosses the tropic of
Capricorn. The first article is by Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji
Maharaj on the spiritual significance of this festival. This article is
at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/religions/makara_siva.htm

The second article is by Sri Swami Krishnanandaji Maharaj. The title of
the article is "Sun--The Eye of the World". In this article, Swami
Krishnanandaji explains the place of the Sun in the scheme of things and
the spiritual significance of the Sun. This article is at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/religions/makara_krishna.htm

We also uploaded a biography of Sri Swami Vivekanandaji whose birthday was
on the 12th of January. Swami Vivekanandaji's biography is at:

EXPERIENCE IS SUBJECTIVE: "Swamiji, if some drink coffee at night they get
sound sleep, but it is just the opposite in my case," Atmaramji said to
the Master.

"That is the beauty," commented the Master. "For some, castor oil will
relieve constipation and for others it will increase it. What do you say
about that? That which is nectar to one becomes poison to another. This is
a great mystery. It clearly shows that there is no truth in the object
itself. As you are, so you see and experience. The truth about the object
lies only in the truth about the subject. Therefore, know the Self and be
free."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Though the world is full of misery, yet Brahman is all pure. He remains
always untouched by evil. As youth, childhood and old age belongs to the
body only and not to the Self, as blindness and deafness, etc., belong to
the senses and not to the Self, so also the defects of the world do not
belong to Brahman." - Swami Sivananda

ON REINCARNATION: Sri M. K. Pandit, an old gentle-man, a native of
Udaipur, who had settled in America, came to the Master and prostrated.

"Swamiji Maharaj, I have heard of your greatness, your wonderful teachings
and your wonderful mission. Today I am having your Darshan and feel
blessed. Swamiji, is it possible for a soul with a male body to take a
female body in the next incarnation?"

This was Sri M. K. Pandit's query.

"O yes!" said the Master. "The soul has to undergo various experiences in
different bodies. In the male body it experiences the qualities of
boldness, strength, etc., and in the female body it experiences patience,
mercy, kindness and forgiveness. Moreover, a man is never a full man nor a
woman a full woman. There is woman in man and man in woman. There are
animal traits also in man. In some men there is the nature of a dog, in
others the nature of a donkey, the nature of a jackal and tiger. Whichever
quality is predominant at the time of death, the soul takes a body with
that particular quality in the next incarnation. So develop divine
qualities. You will evolve quickly and become the Divine Itself in the
end."

"Thank you, Swamiji. My doubt is now cleared. When I go back I will try to
disseminate your teachings," said Sri Pandit.

-----------------------------------------------------

"This world is a great school. It is for thy education. Be wise. Be in the
spirit of Yoga. Utilise all opportunities to the best possible advantage.
There is no such thing as bad. Your capacities and will-power will
develop. You will receive more of Divine Light, Knowledge, Purity, Peace
and Spiritual strength. Smile with the flowers and the green grass. Shake
hands with the shrub, ferns and twigs. Develop friendship with all
neighbours, dogs, cats, cows, human beings, trees, in fact, with all
nature's creations. You will have a perfect and rich life. Open your eyes
now. Wake up from your deep slumber and profound inertia. Regain the lost
divinity. Thou art Divine. Thou art Atman. Realise this and be free." -
Swami Sivananda

Om Namo Bhagavate Krishnanandaya!

Namaste!

We have uploaded a book by Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj
titled "Temples in India". This book consists of inspiring hymns dedicated
to the deities in some of the major temples in India and also a short
description of their location and the important spiritual legends that are
connected to them. This book can be downloaded from our free books page
at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/download/download.htm

This month's discourse is titled "The Marionettes' Game" and it is by Sri
Swami Venkatesanandaji Maharaj. In this discourse Swamiji expounds on the
meaning of Vasana (usually translated as subtle desire) and also throws
much light on the concept of creation and dissolution based on events that
take place in our daily life. This discourse is at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/discourse/feb99.htm

There have been many new uploads to Sri Swami Krishnanandaji Maharaj's
website over the week. A new book on the Brahma Sutra by Swamiji is now
available at Swamiji's site. This very difficult text has been, in
Swamiji's words, "sugar-coated" so that we can understand it.

Swamiji's site also has a discourse section now. The following discourses
are now available:
* Swami Sivananda
* Purity
* Religion and Spirituality
* A Conversation (on the concept of Judge and the current state of India)
* The Integrated Life According to the Brahma Sutra
* The Difficulties of a Spiritual Seeker
* The Ontological Argument in Philosophy, A Critique to the Argument, and
Replies
* Philosophical Deliberations

DEVELOPING FRIENDSHIP: After the night Satsang the Master introduced Sri
R., a devotee from Malaya, to Sri S. H. They saluted each other and after
a few words kept quiet. Noticing this the Master remarked, "Ohji, as soon
as you meet a new person you should talk to him or her sweetly and
voluntarily. You should make the person feel homely within a short time.
You should not maintain a reserved attitude. This is the secret of
developing good friendship with one and all."

-----------------------------------------------------

"The irreligious man also will reach God ultimately, but through a longer
and more painful route, after a lot of experience of the miseries of the
world. The religious-minded man will go to Him by short cut and enjoy the
bliss of God in this very birth. The sooner you become religious-minded,
the sooner you will reach the fountain-source of bliss." - Swami Sivananda

BEING WORTHY OF ONE'S NAME: The Master gave Darshan in the morning at
10 a.m. He was in a jovial mood.

A devotee from Kuala Lumpur came and prostrated.

"What is the name of your daughter?" enquired the Master.

"My daughter's name is Satgunam" (meaning 'good-natured').

"Satgunam? Has she a quarrelsome nature? Is she good to you? Or is she
Satgunam in name only?"

"No, Swamiji, she is very good to me. She respects, adores and serves me
nicely," replied the devotee.

"That is it!" said the Master. "One should prove worthy of one's name.
Some people keep a very beautiful name but their character is just the
opposite. What is the use of having the name 'Annapoorna' but not giving a
morsel of food to a poor man. Miss Rosy may be like a rose externally only
but full of thorns inside! Mr Broadman will be only physically broad but
narrow-minded at heart! As is the name so should be the character."

All enjoyed this instructive humour of the Master and burst into laughter!

Today (Feb. 15) is the 92nd. birth anniversary of Rev. Sri Swami
Paramanandaji Maharaj. Swamiji was known as the "Bismarck of the Ashram"
as he was virtually the foundation of the Divine Life Society. Holy Master
paid the following tribute to Swamiji: "Swami Paramananda has got original
ideas. It was he who built the Bhajan Hall, collecting donations from
people. It was he who started the Publication League. It was he who
organised my All India Tour. He was responsible for bringing out German
and French translations of my books. He wrote to the publishers and
induced them to take up the translations. He has spread my knowledge
throughout the foreign countries. He is a very hard worker. He works the
whole night."

A biography of Swamiji has been uploaded to our site at:

THE MASTER'S EQUAL VISION: After the office work the Master took
photographs with a military officer and a press reporter from Delhi. While
he was returning to his cottage, four or five beggars stood on the
wayside. Suddenly, to the surprise of all, he called the poor beggars to
his side and asked Sri Purushottam to take shots. Then he gave each one a
rupee and sent them away. Both the press reporter and the military officer
were dumbfounded to witness the Master's simplicity and equal vision among
the rich and the poor.

'Prostration to Lord Siva.' This is the five-lettered formula or the

will bestow on the chanter the Highest Bliss of Existence." - Swami

MIND, THE CAUSE OF WORRY: Swami Venkatesananda was informing the Master
that Sri X. was having a little family worry, which made him indulge in
some unlawful act.

The Master said, "Who is not having worry? Everybody is having some worry
or other. A householder is having family worry; a Sannyasin is having
worry about alms. The only 'worry-less' man is the enlightened sage who
has controlled his mind, which is the root cause of all worry and
anxiety."

"Collective prayer is very effective. If a hundred persons join together
and pray, it will have a greater effect than one person praying. Of
course, if that single person is very powerful, even one person's prayer
is all right. But, where personalities have their own weaknesses and
foibles, it is better that people have congregational prayer. When all the
minds are put together they form a great energy. It surges forth into
God." - Swami Krishnananda

RAM-NAM BRINGS REAL FREEDOM: After going through some letters in his
cottage, the Master started for the office. Swami Krishnananda Mata, an
old lady, who prayed daily for her early departure from this world, came
and bowed to the Master.

"Awo Mataji. How are you?" greeted the Master.

"Expecting the time to come early, Swamiji. Somehow God is not granting."

"All the same to be here or to go there if Ram-Nam is constantly on the
lips," said the Master.

"Thought rules the world, they being inseparable as inner and outer
expressions respectively. Clothe your thought with positive and living
words and you can rule your life. Negative thoughts are base and blind and
cause a vital loss of power. Spiritualise your thought, word and action
and they become subtle, significant and sweet. Think in terms of
conscious, vital realisation of the spirit of infinite life. Thoughts
imprison you, being base; and they liberate you, being noble. You do not
attract that which you want but stick to that which you are. You do not
get what you wish and pray for, but that which you justly earn. Your
wishes and prayers are gratified and answered when they harmonise with
your thoughts and actions. You should not revolt continuously against an
effect without, while all the time you go on nourishing and preserving its
cause within your heart." - Swami Sivananda

SEE GOOD IN EVERYTHING: The Master was proceeding to the office. Sri
Santosh approached him and informed him about R.'s health and consulted
the Master about some medicines to be given to her.

"Santosh, from where did you get that medicine?" enquired the Master.

"From Swami Chidananda, Swamiji. He is keeping very good medicines with
him."

"He is a lover of medicines, I think," said the Master. "Santosh, is he
not a very loving and compassionate man?"

"Of course, Swamiji."

The Master then said, "Always look to the good side of men and matters.
Even when you come across people who are rude to you, feel that God has
provided you with an opportunity of strengthening your mind through their
behaviour. Always see what is good in others in order to develop that
particular good quality in yourself.

"See no evil, but if you happen to notice any, see that that evil does not
come to you. God created both good and evil in this world for us to learn.
>From the good we learn to be good, and from the evil to be free from evil.
Therefore, both good and evil are really good only."

On Sunday, March 14th, our revered Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj launched a
web page for the Malaysian branch of the Divine Life Society at the
Sivanandashram, Batu Cave, Malaysia. This page was launched by Swamiji
during the Youth Symposium on Moral & Ethical excellence organized by the
Youth Wing of the Malaysian branch.

This website is at:
http://www.sivananda.org.my/

This site contains the following information about the Malaysian Branch:
* History
* Activities
* Sivananda Clinic
* Youthwing and their activities
* Pictures of our Masters and Sivanandashram, Malaysia.

We also a uploaded a book on a theme related to youths titled "Students,
Spiritual Literature and Sivananda". This book consists of a series of
questions pertaining to the study of literature, the choice of books, the
benefits of Svadhyaya and so on. The answers have been furnished by Sri
Swami Chidanandaji. There are also some select articles and instructions
by Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji especially addressed to the younger
generation. This book is available from our free books page at:
http://www.rsl.ukans.edu/~pkanagar/divine/download/download.htm

Two new books have been uploaded to Sri Swami Krishnanandaji's website.
They are
1) Studies in Comparative Philosophy--A systematic study of the principal
thinkers in the field of philosophy in the West in the light of the
Vedanta doctrine of the East.

2) The Philosophy of the Panchadasi--A chapter-wise study of the great
metaphysical work of Swami Vidyaranya known as the Panchadasi in fifteen
chapters, being a condensed form of Vedanta philosophy.

THE VALUE OF OPPOSITES: After the usual Kirtan and prayer in the office,
the Master was replying to a question put by a lady devotee.

"Vice exists to glorify virtue. Pride exists to glorify humility. Black
exists to glorify white. Evil exists to glorify good. If all were good and
virtuous, how would you appreciate virtues at all!"

-----------------------------------------------------

"When man plumbs into the depths of his own being, he spontaneously comes
in contact with the roots of all things. Religious experience is
tantamount to cosmic experience in a very important way. It is not an
exhilaration that one privately feels within oneself. Religion is not an
emotion. Nor is it a psychic phenomenon. It is impossible to describe it
in available expressions. It surpasses the limitations not only of
language, but also of the rules and regulations of society and the
traditions of behavioural norms." - Swami Krishnananda

GOD ALONE GIVES: While the Master was returning from the office the same
beggar group which came yesterday approached him for money.

"Like this they will come daily, Swamiji. Swamiji need not give anything
today. They should not be encouraged," said Swami Hridayananda.

"Doesn't matter," said the Master. "God is giving."

Turning to Satchidananda he said, "Ohji, give them one rupee each."

"Yes, Prayer has tremendous influence. It can work anything provided you
are sincere. It is at once heard and responded to. Do it in the daily
struggle of life and realise for yourself its high efficacy. Pray in any
way you like. Become as simple as a Child. Have no cunningness or

ESSENCE OF TEACHINGS: Sri Sushila, a devotee from Delhi, who was a nurse
by profession, met the Master with her sister in his cottage in the
morning. After prostration she gave her diary to him for his autograph and
blessings.

"Washerman Rs. 8, house rent Rs. 25, vegetables Rs. 5, hotel account Rs.
26, milkman Rs. 15."

All wondered what the Master was reading from that diary. To the surprise
of everyone it was only from a blank page that he was reading all the
above items. Everyone burst into laughter!

Then the Master inscribed his immortal teachings in the diary: "Serve,
love, give, purify, meditate, realise; be good, do good," and handed it
back to Sri Sushila.

Sri Sushila was finding it a bit difficult to read what the Master had
written. He helped her and said, "Ohji, try to practise the last
couplet--'be good, do good'--and the others will follow automatically."

THE MASTER'S WIT: "Sushila, do you get angry with your patients?" the
Master asked.

"No, Swamiji. Those who come to me as my patients are all railway
officers. So I cannot get angry with them."

Turning to Chandravati, the Rani of Gaya, the Master said, "Chandravati,
you get angry with your servants, is it not so?"

All burst into laughter!

"Help the world by good thoughts. Like attracts like. If you entertain an
evil thought, that thought attracts all sorts of evil thoughts from other
people. You pass on those thoughts to others also. Thought moves. Thought
is a living dynamic force. Thought is a thing. If you allow your mind to
dwell on a sublime thought this thought will attract good thoughts from
others. You pass on that good thought to others. You pollute the world
with your bad thoughts." - Swami Sivananda

ON TAKING TO SANNYAS: The Master was coming out of his cottage, followed
by disciples and devotees. Just then he happened to witness a scene on the
roadside, where a woman was going on shouting and quarrelling with a man,
probably her husband. The Master remarked humorously, "If there were many
ladies with such a quarrelsome nature the number of Sannyasins in the
world will increase like anything!"

All burst into laughter!

HINTS TO NURSES: A lady doctor and her assistant came from Kankhal to have
the Master's Darshan in the office. After giving them some books he
enquired of the assistant, "Are you the assistant doctor?"

"No, Swamiji, I am in charge of the operation theatre. I assist during the
operation."

"What is an important quality necessary for one who assists in an
operation?" asked the Master. He himself then answered, "Presence of mind.
You must know beforehand the correct instruments needed at a particular
time during the operation. Suppose you hand a wrong instrument by mistake
and the doctor gets angry, then don't feel upset. You must be calm and
bold. Do the needed things cheerfully, otherwise you may commit more
mistakes and the operation may not be successful."

The doctor and her assistant thanked the Master for the advice and
departed.

ON WISE CONTROL OF THE MIND: A middle-aged man who had resigned from a
well-paid job in Delhi, came to the Ashram with the intention of staying
to devote his whole time to spiritual pursuits. He prostrated before the
Master and was waiting for his orders. The Master started to feel his
pulse and began making suggestions and putting questions.

"Ohji, you had better return to Delhi and get the job back. Don't do all
these things through emotion. Your wife and children will suffer there.
They will come here and weep. Moreover, it will be very difficult for you
to stick to this path."

The man replied, "No, Swamiji, I have no inclination to work. My family
will not suffer there because I have made provision for them. They have
two houses and Rs. 5,000 in cash. I am determined to embrace the spiritual
life. In any case I will stick to it."

"All right, then what is your intention? What do you wish to do?"

"Swamiji, I wish to travel throughout India, visiting all the important
shrines and sacred places and singing the Lord's Name wherever I go; this
is my intention."

"Ohji, this is not an easy task. You have to undergo many difficulties.
You will not get food and shelter in time," rejoined the Master.

"No, Swamiji, God will take care of all those things."

"That is all right. God will provide you with everything, but before that
He will see whether you are fit enough for His Grace. You will have to
face many a tribulation and trial. In the midst of all these you may not
be able to think of God and may even lose your faith. Your faith in God is
not yet developed to such an extent as to enable you to face all pains and
sufferings and yet think of Him. The best way is to stay here for a month
or two, engage yourself in some work for a few hours daily and the rest of
the time you can meditate."

"No, Swamiji, I have no interest in any work. I cannot work. I want to
utilise the whole time in meditation."

"My dear sir, go step by step. Don't jump from the first to the fifth. You
will break your legs. It is not possible for a neophyte to meditate all
the twenty-four hours of the day. You can do so for a few days only. Later
on the mind will put an 'automatic vacuum break'. In the name of deep
meditation you will be sleeping only. This will produce inertia. The mind
should be controlled tactfully and with discrimination, otherwise, like a
vicious horse, it will throw you down and immediately bolt away. A few
hours of Japa, a few hours of meditation, some Kirtan, some Asanas, a few
rounds of Pranayama, a little selfless service--combining all these
practices you must work to win over the mind. Then only will you have a
harmonious and synthetic development of the head, heart and hand. Do not
think that work is a hindrance to meditation; on the contrary it is very
helpful. Work done selflessly refreshes the mind when it is tired due to
meditation. So, do not hesitate, stay here and take up some work."

"Excuse me, Swamiji, I cannot work," put in the man.

"All right, you need not work. You are interested in Kirtan, is it not? Do
Akhanda Kirtan for a few hours daily in the Bhajan hall and help in the
worship in the temple. Satyagyanam, give him a room, clothes and
everything. All right, you can go now. Be cheerful. May the Lord bless
you!"

Such is the Master's supreme, inexpressible kindness!

-----------------------------------------------------

"We are never true to ourselves and, therefore, we can never be true to
others. This predicament is a tremendous danger before man's future. And
this illness has come upon man right from the very beginning of his birth
itself, and attaches itself to him wherever he goes in every incarnation.
Perhaps this is the original sin that people speak of in theoretical
circles. Unless we shed this completely and stand naked before the glory
and fire of God as pure spirit, and not as men and women, we cannot
understand, appreciate and feel what divine love is." - Swami Krishnananda

the weal of the people in central Europe.

Yours in the service of Gurudev,

ps. I am going to be in Greenland for the next one month beginning May
3rd. Rob Wilhelm will be taking care of the e-mail list while I am away.

-----------------------------------------------------

A special spiritual request by Swami Krishnapremananda Saraswati of
Vivekayuktananda Ashram:

A group of 7 samnyasins of the Vivekayuktananda Ashram sing mantras 24
hours a day, so that Peace, Real Love, Divine Understanding, Clear
Discernment, Respect to all that has been created, the exaltation to the
Spiritual values, the relief for all those who are suffering, the charity
and Union between all the human beings, be manifested in this world. That
the Divine Light, without distinctions of religious believes, be spread
all over this suffering and disoriented world and the Ahimsa
(non-violence) be established in the heart of all the human beings.

>From this very moment and as a request of our Sadgurudev Bhagavan Sri
Swami Vivekayuktananda Maharaji, 8 of those 24 hours will be dedicated to
ask for the cease of fire in central Europe and for the Kosovo refugees
to receive all the physical, moral and spiritual support to relieve their
intense and undescribable suffering. Hari OM Tat Sat.

These 8 hours of special request will be between 12 am and 8 pm (GMT -4).
We make an invitation to all the members of the DLS family to join us in
our Sadgurudev's request. OM

-----------------------------------------------------

FREE-WILL: Sri Sucha Singh, a zealous aspirant, who had been staying at
the Ashram for a year, wanted to return to his native place to take up
employment. He came to the Master to take leave.

The Master remarked, "Due to some good impressions of past births God
places us in an environment where we can utilise our time in prayer and
spiritual practices in the company of holy men. It is due to lack of
discrimination that one wishes to abandon such a place and return to
worldly life. God has given us the intellect as well as good conditions.
It is left to us to decide whether to walk the path of Sreyo Marga
(blessedness), which leads to everlasting bliss, or the path of Preyo
Marga (enjoyment), which leads to the ever-revolving cycle of births and
deaths and destruction in the end."

Turning to Sri Sucha Singh, the Master said, "All right, may the Lord
bless you! Keep this money with you for your onward expenses. Om Tat Sat."

-----------------------------------------------------

"Remember the instructions of Lord Jesus: 'If any one gives you a slap on
one cheek, show him the other cheek also. If any one takes your coat, give
him your cap also.' How sublime is this teaching! If you follow this you
will have great spiritual strength and power of endurance. It will make
you divine. It will transform the nature of the offender also at once." -

BEAR CRITICISM: The Master was sitting in the office, going through
his correspondence. Sri Santosh entered. She complained that a certain
person made a sarcastic remark about her article and this made her feel
terribly hurt.

"Santosh, why do you pay attention to these matters?" began the
Master. "When are you going to be bold to face all these things? When everyone
behaves nicely to you, how can you ever strengthen your will? The
world is such, what to do! You must bear patiently all these difficulties,
keeping your eye always fixed on the goal for which you have come here. Just
see, you have allowed a wave to arise and disturb your mental peace. It is
going to vibrate at least for three or four days and, because of this
disturbance, you will lose your mental balance in all other affairs
and dealings. Anyhow, Lord bless you! Take these sweets. Be cheerful.
Forget and forgive. Om Namah Shivaya."

"Peace is the most covetable possession on the earth. It is the
greatest treasure in all the universe. Peace is the most important and
indispensable factor for all growth and development. It is in the tranquillity
and
quiet of the night that the seed slowly sprouts from under the soil. The bud
opens in the depth of the most silent hours. So also, in a state of
peace and love, people evolve, grow in their distinctive culture, and
develop perfect civilization. In peace and calmness, spiritual evolution is
also facilitated." - Swami Sivananda

IS THIS DISPASSION?: Sri Swami X. came with letters for the Master's
signature. Along with them he placed a note in which he had written some of
his requirements.

"Ohji, you need not write them on a piece of paper and give it to me. Tell
me your wants straightaway," said the Master.

"I asked the secretary but he refused; so I came to you, Swamiji."

"That is all right. I will give you some money. You yourself may go and get
the things."

"No, Swamiji, I will not touch money. I want only in kind."

"H'm! Money you won't touch; at the same time you will fight also, is it
not?" exclaimed the Master.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We are radiant centres of divinity, and therefore our life should be a
constant expression, a dynamic manifestation of divinity in thought, word
and action. We should live life in order to manifest our divinity in all
that we do, in all the movements and actions of our life. Then alone our
life is authentic, genuine, true. Otherwise it will only be an anomaly of
life. If we are divine within but our life outside is undivine,
unspiritual, ugly, full of all that contradicts our divinity, then that is
not life. It is a living falsehood, a living lie. It is a contradiction.

AN OBEDIENT DISCIPLE!: "Shantanandaji," the Master called out, "listen, I will
tell you an interesting story."

The whole office staff turned towards the Master's side to listen to the story.

"There was a Guru. He had a very fine disciple very obedient and taking the
Guru's words as gospel truths.

"The Guru one day called his disciple and said, 'Sishya, kindly collect some
fuel and bring it here.'

"'Please pardon me, Gurudev,' answered the disciple, 'I am not feeling well
today.'

"'All right, don't worry. It does not matter,' said the Guru.

"A few days later the Guru again called his disciple and said, 'Sishya
Bhagavan, kindly go to the river and fetch some water for drinking.'

"'Satguru Deva, ocean of supreme mercy! I am ever at your service, but I have a
sprain in my left leg. I cannot walk today.' This was the disciple's reply.

"Like this, whenever the Guru called him for some service, the disciple escaped
with some kind of excuse or other.

"One day, the Guru called him and said, 'My dear disciple, I have prepared some
nice halwa for you. Kindly go and take it.'

"'Beloved Master, how long can I disobey you? I am waiting eagerly every moment
to obey your orders, my Lord!'

"Without further hesitation the disciple finished the entire lot of sweetmeats
within a moment!"

All burst into laughter!

"How do you like this disciple? This is called 'explicit devotion' and
'implicit obedience' to the Guru!"

The Master proceeded to discuss a letter written by a devotee two days ago. The
letter read:

"Swamiji, a week back I came to your Ashram at about 2.30p.m. with the
intention of having the Darshan of my most beloved Gurudev. I knocked at the
door and was disappointed because nobody opened it or responded to my enquiry.
I felt that if Gurudev hurt the feelings of disciples like this, then where can
they go for consolation. Therefore, I have determined to fast unto death if I
do not get a satisfactory explanation from Gurudev within four days!"

Smiling, the Master remarked, "See how many varieties you find in this world.
Do you call this devotion? It is nothing but adamancy. Anyhow, I am going to
write only after two days. Let him fast for at least two days. That will do him
good and purify him!

All laughed!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a continuity, which is life, of which we are a part, and we are not
just X,Y,Z, or A,B,C sitting here; it is not like that. If we open our eyes to
fact, we will be surprised that we have been living a fool-hardy life upto this
time, and now the time has come when we have to be serious. Our time is short,
and there is so much to learn, and a lot to achieve. Obstacles are too many,
and we have no time to woolgather, sleep or while away our time as if there is
eternity before us. We cannot take things lightly, life is precious. We cannot
take it as a joke. Every moment of time is as gold. Because every moment is
nothing but a little loss of this span of our life. Every bell that rings tells
us that we have lost one hour. It is not a happy thing that we are hearing.
Tenacious has to be our effort at gaining insight into that which we seek.

PRIVATE TALK WANTED!: One by one the devotees came, prostrated before the
Master and took their seats. Sri Santosh brought some of her friends for his
Darshan.

"Swamiji, this gentleman wants to have a private talk with you," said Santosh.

"Private talk? All must go out from here then, except myself and that person,
is it not so? God also should not be here!"

All burst into laughter!

===============================================

When a man laughs, people seldom ask why he is laughing. On the other hand when
a man cries, everybody asks why he is crying. This shows that our essential
nature is bliss. No one wants misery, but everyone want happiness, and all
one's activities in life are directed towards the acquisition of happiness.
This also proves that our real nature is bliss. In deep sleep when there are no
objects, senses or mind, we feel bliss; hence our essential nature should be
bliss. That again is the reason why people ailing from painful maladies even
desire to give up their bodies and thus get rid of the pain. --Swami Sivananda

BUSINESS WITH GOD: Sri Om Prakash, a young friend of Sri Suri, a devotee of the
Master, came from Delhi one morning. The Master enquired about him.

"Om Prakashji, what is your ambition? Is it to get a job or to start a
business?"

"I want to do some business, Swamiji."

"That is good. Start a good business and work hard. Earn four or five lakhs of
rupees, then stop the business and start business with God. Business with God
is very profitable, because your investment is only a little selfless service,
a little prayer, a little Japa and meditation. But the profit you get from it
is everlasting peace and happiness."

Man can never live without God, for God is the Whole and man is only a part.
Man's religion is his Dharma and this Dharma can be in its real sense only one,
for its goal is one. --Swami Sivananda

WHEN THE CHARITABLE NATURE COMES: The Master was returning to his cottage after
the office work. On the way a Sindhi lady from Nyasaland approached him in a
desperate condition, catching hold of his feet and weeping. He was informed
that she had lost her husband a few months ago.

The Darshan of the Master made her peaceful. He took her to his cottage,
consoled her, gave her a Mantra to repeat and conducted prayer for the departed
soul. Within a few moments the lady became absolutely quiet and calm. She
presented the Master with a Persian carpet and Rs. 100 for feeding the Sadhus
and Mahatmas of the Ashram. She then departed with a peaceful mind.

"The charitable nature usually comes to rich people only after the death of
someone and not before," remarked the Master.

With all the comforts and the glories of physical life, if the mind is not in
peace, of what avail is this glory of the earth? --Swami Krishnananda
