I'd take a close look at where the markers should be, put in a lifeline and rip it. That would be a nightmare to unknit! I can feel your pain (a little)...

Sadly, I don't know the "right" way, when I rip, I tend to correct any twisted stitches as I re-knit the first row...maybe someone will chime in? ... ...
